Maybe it implies that the thought is an interloper of some kind that *should* be paying rent, but it isn't because you're giving it a pass? People often seem to say it about thoughts that kind of barged in from somewhere else.

Does the phrase 'this thought lives rent free in my mind' imply that every other thought does, in fact, pay rent?

I hear California wants to drop gender markers from photo IDs but due to federal laws they have to have something, so their brilliant idea is that they'll still have the "Gender: " field but you can put any letter there.

So if you want M/F for the legacy genders, you can, but you can also do X for non-binary, or any other (latin) letter.

like "Gender: K" or "Gender: Q" or "Gender: V"

what unethical experiments in linguistics would you like to perform?

The experiment we would all like to perform is to raise a bunch of different kids in controlled linguistic environments of different sorts and see how they turn out. But you cant do this because its a "human rights violation".

I’m combining an idea inspired by @the-last-dillpickle with one that’s been simmering in my brain for a while. Star Trek mostly deals with upright people with no discernible kinks, but I imagine that given all the different kinds of things that happen in Trek, there would be all sorts of new well-defined kinks and perhaps whole subcultures devoted to them.

I’m gonna informally call this list Deanna Troi’s DSM. It’s worth saying that while some of these paraphilias may cause personal or social distress, that’s certainly not necessarily the case, and kinks do not equal pathology.
