call me naive or hopeful or whatever but i really don't think kaladin is going to die in kowt. it wouldn't make any sense thematically and it would be disappointing for no reason. maybe there will be some dramatic change with him, like ascending or becoming a Returned or something like that, but just die? get out of my sight. he didn't go through this entire arc to die in self sacrifice.

to brag (opposite of not to brag) but i could write 15,000 page novels in half a year too if my prose was completely flavorless. like i could write 15,000 pages of textureless, dry, unseasoned nonsense. prose should feel like it got the author's hands all over it. prose should feel like an art form itself: it should have a sound, a taste, a feeling.

one thing i’m personally not super fond of about sanderson’s world building in stormlight is that the vorin system of gender roles is different from ours in a way that i feel is not as interesting as it could’ve been. although i DO enjoy seeing lots of women in STEM / academia, because it’s so strict and segregated and since womens’ role is strictly academic, he ends up being able to pull this annoying move of having the women technically break gender roles in the book, without really challenging the modern day gender role biases of his actual IRL audience. he’s able to pass off “feminine girl but she has a sword” as revolutionary, because that is revolutionary in alethkar, but to a modern day reader it’s very much 90s’ era “you can have a skirt AND fight” feminism, which isn’t really a new or helpful take on gender anymore. women have been fighting in fantasy for a while – but what we still don’t see is women who break gender roles in other ways. we don’t see masc women. we don’t see women living lifestyles that challenge our societal preconceptions of womens’ roles. so when sanderson aligns his gender roles in this specific way, he gets to make “feminine girl with sword” revolutionary from a watsonian perspective, while avoiding the reality that it’s not really a revolutionary take on gender from a doylist perspective.

okay i’ve calmed down a little but i still have more to say.

white people, you need to be better about recognizing whitewashing in art and confronting your fellow white folks about it.

you know how disheartening and angering it is as a person of color to try and politely, privately explain to a white artist that they’ve whitewashed a character of color only for them to tell you no one else has mentioned it to them, and that (this is word for word the response i got lmao) “other people don’t see a problem”? why does it always fall on POC to confront and educate white people on their racism? i’m fucking tired. before i even tried to tell this artist that their work was offensive, i had to tell three of my white friends that they reblogged the whitewashed art first. that is fucking unacceptable.

when you confront whitewashing publicly, white artists will cry that you’re bullying them, but when you do it privately they’re bold enough to point the finger back at you and tell you YOU’RE the only one who has a problem with it.

white people need to be better. white people need to be more vigilant and critical of their white peers. this cannot continue to be people of color’s burden. period.

i cant tag you in the replies of that Elhokar Post for some reason but youre so right. sanderson has said that sla is basically a set of extended character studies. and character-driven stories are fine, he does that facet really well, but it feels like sla is driven by its leads' arcs at the direct expense of... well. pretty much everything else, at times.

ugh not surprised that tumblr can bork even that

but yeah it does feel like so much of the setting and plotting (outside the big broad strokes of The Plot) is so flimsy and fragile in order to serve the character arc, but when they change so suddenly, so fluidly and without friction, the world suddenly feels like a stage with cardboard setpieces. and it's hard to take any part of it as seriously as i did before... for me, it really was Jasnah and the "somehow less racism now" in row, but pointing out that elhokar, a whole actual character, was doing the same thing was like, whoa. yeah.

Feel free to ignore this and I hope I'm not causing you further pain, but you're completely right. I also find it funny to hear people bending over backwards to defend shipping incest. And like. Why can people acknowledge that representation matters and acknowledging that seeing representation whether it's queer, disability, race, etc. has an affect on people, but the moment it comes to things like incest shipping, suddenly the idea that the media doesn't affect things is thrown out the window?

yeah idk the weird ways people will bend over backwards to justify it as just fiction is so weird. like bestie media representations of sex & sexuality influence us as a society. media influences sexual norms & standards. just think about fatphobia, homophobia, transphobia, the sexualization of teens, esp teenage girls, normalization of a lack of explicit consent. all these things were normalized by media. like. fetishization of incest does actually impact us.
