Perry thought he had leat it all beat him, for a while. That the sorcerer had won despite now being jailed while he was technically free. Sometimes he still thought like that. But there had been glimmers of his tenacity Swynlake helped dig up, in alternate uverises where he was a protester or part of an underground network or-- part of an underground network again but dying in a horrible flower field-- the numerous others there had been.
He shook himself out of his thoughts and nodded, already mentally flipping through his old collegues to think about who'd be good to reach out too. Some of them were even crankier than him and wouldn't know how to edit themselves properly. but he was sure a couple would get back to him at least. "I can't promise they'll have views you agree with, or even that they'll end up being helpful, but I never mind an excuse to get in touch with them."
Perry actually chuckled a bit, almost reminded of hs much younger, slightly cockier self. (Slightly stupder self, too, but he was sure that didn't also apply to Kim, who seemed to have a good head on her shoulders.) "Well, there are plenty of issues to have a crack at." He allowed, nodding.
"Danger..." Perry hummed, "sure, there's plenty of it around here. But I more meant that we're not the be all end all, we're not the law. So, if you're going to be around I'm more interested in your opinions than the cold logic, if the two don't allign- does that make sense?"

He didn't shop a lot- shock of the century- for himself or the agency, besides groceries and replacing shoes that had fallen apart. It was a good place to people watch, though, Perry had spent plenty of afternoons accompanying his mother to the local shopping centre, sitting on an uncomfortable chair in the corner of the store, watching every kind of person go by.
He was trying not to gawk now, just following after Bruce towards the desks, trying to focus on this task. It was important for the office to look decent, inviting enough for people to discuss the sorts of things they might come to Perry for help with.
The desk Bruce pointed out wasn't quite what he had been picturing, but that was more about his own lack of creativity than anything, because it was... Well, really nice. Dark wood, lots of drawers, enough room for him to kick his legs out properly underneath. He came closer to look at it properly, tapping his fingers against the desktop gently. "Legs are a little skinny- is it sturdy enough? The office is chaos, sometimes." He'd have given it a test nudge, but that was probably bad form, "it is definitly the sort of storage space I'm after, though."

Perry- he'd liked the coursework at uni, being able to settle himself into a little corner of the library that was open 24 hours a day with a big stack of books and his laptop, working away until he was too tired to keep going. Then he went out for a cigarette and a coffee, and worked for a few more hours. He had a good head for paperwork, yeah, but the first draft of his dissertation had been too passionate-- too angry, his tutor had said- and it was a critique that followed Perry out of the classroom and into his work, with admonishments from higher ups over his opinions not uncommon.
Even before his curse, he'd seen the problems in the system- he'd argued over it all until he was red in the face, and hadn't been able to make enough changes not to be forced into eearly retirement. He bit his tongue on all that, though, because Kim deserved a chance to make her case for what she believed in without his bitterness marring things, and who knew, maybe she'd do better at turning things around. "Right, looking into gaps, oversights, differences in treatment?" He bobbed his head, "good stuff. A lot there, too. If you're interested in getting some differet perspectives I still have friends on the force, I'm sure one or two of them wouldn't mind answering a few questions- even if its just by email, or something."
He sipped his drink and sighed, "unfortunately the law is still the law, but one of the good things about managing your own agency is having that space between you and true authorities, and the right to decide for yourself how a situation should be handled or how a person aught to be dealt with. Especially in a town like this, it's an important thing to keep in mind for sure."

It wasn't uncommon for Perry to be at the office into the late hours, though this was one of the few occasions he found himself idling around the place without really working, waiting. Errol had said he'd be by, and he was weighing up tiredness vs curiosity, whether he should just turn in for the night and get back to him tomorrow or hang around having another coffee.
He'd just filled the kettle and reached for a mug when there was a knock at the door, and he absently pulled a second out of the cupboard before going to answer it. He startled at the sight of him, taking a small step back, "jesus!-" Perry huffed, taking in the sore sight of him. Looked like he'd had an interesting day. "I didn't miss the chaos." He muttered on his way back into the office, slipping into the kitchen to make their coffees and get the first aid kit out from under the sink.
He carried the kit under one arm and set everything down on his desk, taking a sip of his still too hot coffee and grabbing for the antiseptic wipes, "C'mere," he sighed, already reaching towards him. "Don't suppose you fancy telling me how a quick trip up to London ended like this?"

Perry had been working alone for a long time. First, there were the animals that decided to be his companions- though the cat still seemed to hate him most days- then the retiring sheriff, the too smart kid, the work study student. Felt like he blinked and suddenly the office was overflowing; never enough room in the fridge, his pens constantly getting stolen, and too many people working at his desk.
Then he remembered Bruce, and their talk during a pre-game warmup about the kinds of things Whosits and Whatsits had to offer. The idea had originally been just to get a nice new desk for himself and throw out the old one, but that might change a bit now, depending on if he could find more than one or not. Obviously he’d get the nicest one. It was still his agency.
He’d left the place at a reasonable time for once in order to make it over to the shop, browsing around the aisles and their trinkets idly by himself for a little while, hands clasped behind his back. Even off the clock he probably looked a bit like he was assessing the place, couldn’t stop himself from making note of the exits, some of the precarious shelves.
He spotted Bruce after a while, wandering his way when he wasn’t dealing with anyone else. “Afternoon, mate.” Perry greeted, bobbing his head hello, “thought I’d swing by and see if there had been any good desks come through recently- might even end up taking more than one off your hands, if I could reserve it and come back. Things have picked up a bit, I suppose.”

Perry dissapered into the kitchenette for a moment, getting two glasses of water and handing one off to Kim. settling himself at the other end of the sofa. "Shouldn't be a problem. Sundays are the days I tend to take off, but other than that I'm here so don't feel the need to be too regimented with when you're by- though I tend to be a little more admin focused on Thursdays, incase the idea of that bores you."
What would it be like having anoher person in the office? He could shuffle things around a bit, put that second un-used desk somewhere a bit better suited for them to talk. He'd have to keep an eye on her, if she come out to do work wth him. "What's the focus of your dissertation, then? It might help me get a better idea of what'd actually be the best use of your time while you're here."

Perry had dealt in danger both scientific and magic. (There were the arguments about being one in the same, all the theories-- Perry didn't have time for them right now). Hackers, sorcerers, murderers, part and parcel in his time on the force.
There were lots of people, in lots of different professions, who didn't like Perry Flynn. He didn't make a lot of noise these days, and was hardly the threat he used to be without the badge backing him up, but paranoia was too stuck to his shoulders to shrug off now.
So, yeah. The little device wasn't unappreciated. Perry wondered why Errol had put the effort in for him, but it was useful. He takes the box back, spinning the little segments back to their slots, locking and unlocking it again. A gift for the sake of it? He isn't sure what that means- isn't sure what to say. "That hard to resist following me, mate?" Perry settles for, even if it seems cringey, "I'll still be an easy man to find." He chuckled and shook his head, staring down at the little box again, "..thanks."

Perry had a lot of opinions about it; the police, their handling of magicks both emplyee and criminal. There had been no way to hide what happened to him, and he had been too rattled by the whole ordeal to even try and conceal it from his bosses. They'd been as nice as they could about the whole thing, but the law was the law. So technically he was retired, not fired, but it didn't make the loss of what he'd worked his whole life for any easier to stomach.
He'd wallowed a long time before starting this place, though he wondered, given Kim's phrasing, had she been born gifted? And being denied those oppertunities fram day one, was it any easier that what he'd been through? Probably not. She didn't deserve to feel like there were doors she'd never be able to unlock.
"I... Had to leave the force myself, for that same reason." Perry said, figuring that was enough information to share for now. "So that changes nothing. This place started so I could carry on helping people." He straightened up a bit, patting the doorframe with his hand and shrugging. "Would you like to come sit?" Perry offered, gesturing through to the sofa in his office, "I've got coffee, tea, water-- all the usual stuff. Small fridge, too- terribly stocked." He shook his head and chuckled, "It's just me, so I'm afraid the place isn't too... Formal, I suppose. We do have official opening hours on the door, but I'm often here early, and late, so it wouldn't be much issue to work with your schedule. I imagine you've got a lot on your plate."

"The mysteries in my files don't involve people you know either, so what reason would you have to help solve them?" Perry countered, picking up his pencil to scribble a note in the margin as a thought came to him, "and they're confidential. But if you stumble upon a mystery by yourself, there's no-one to stop you having a crack at solving it." He shrugs, his tone almost encouraging. He had to have a line, see, and the people who came to him for help, they deserved their privacy, no matter how bored Hiro looked.
'Course, it could almost be taken as Perry suggsting he get his hands on the files when Perry wasn't around, but it wasn't, and he had enough confidence in his security system anyway. He thought the kid would benefit from getting out and about, even if it was for crime solving.
Not that he minded having Hiro around the office. He was smart enough to scarper when a client came calling, and he didn't make nearly as much of a mess as the cat did when it was here. He closed the case file, and just watched Hiro for a moment, considering. He might have a useful perspective, on just this one. "Missing teenager." He says, careful with his wording; no names or identifying details. What could he do with just fact? "Dad says runaway. Mum..." Perry frowns, "well, she's the one who hired me. Good kid- average grades, liked by his teachers and had some close friends. Parents called him shy, friends said he was just quiet. His keys and phone are gone, but his wallet, phone charger, and the valuables he kept in a small safe are still at home. He'd started applying for universities, he had tickets for a concert next month, and two days after his parents last saw him he stopped by his part time job to quit."
Perry set the case file down on his desk under a paperweight, tilting his head towards Hiro, "what do you think?"

The more mundane cases had their charm; lost toys, keys, tracking down old heirlooms. Perry liked feeling part of something, even in this small and slightly strange way. And perhaps he had done what he always did, which was seal himself away inside an obsessive little bubble, not letting anyone else into the agency.
"Perhaps it is time to make a few changes, though. It's been peaceful a long time." Perry hummed, thinking of the new desk, and the space there still was for another.
He slowed too, settling back to a walk gently, pushing his toes into the ground and streching out his feet when he stopped. "It was good to chat." Perry said, taking a moment to shake his hand, "s'pose I might see you at the store some time." He grinned giving Bruce a nod goodbye before they split up to go back to their groups.

Perry's brows raised a bit, just for a second, before he schooled his face back to something neutral and leaned in the doorway, curious enough to let her go on with whatever she'd come in here to say. Of course, people primarily came here because they needed his help. Noteable exceptions were Errol, who liked to bother him, and Hiro, who just seemed to like hanging out. He didn't often consider himself a man who needed help.
He'd chosen criminolgy himself at uni, but both were good qualifications for people looking to get into the law and order sort of career path. He remembered nights and days spent holed up in a corner of the campus library working on his own dissertation. Still, he was surprised at the way her offer went. Work study? She was taking initiave, certainly, and Perry had always said he'd never employ anyone at the agency who wasn't passionate. He didn't need seat fillers, and didn't want to waste money on them. Obviously she had much loftier employment goals than this place, but the principal stood for work study too, he supposed. Maybe it was time for a fresh face, even just for a little while.
"...Police and sheriff already turn you down?" Perry asked, cracking a smile. "Not that- well, your no nonsence approach is appreciated no doubt, I'm just honestly a bit surprised if this place is your first choice. I've not had anyone here on work study before, so I can't promise a smooth process or anything, but... I'd be open to discussing it."

He was not wonderful at striking out and making friends on his own, but Swynlake... Had it's ways. Lost keys, a confused sheriff, a kid with a mind too fast for his classroom. Hey, Perry had spent a bit of time as that kid- though, he wasn't on Hiro's level, just an obsessive studier. Hence, the poor socialization. So he couldn't help Hiro feel less strange, but this was the place for strange people.
"Y'know, over Christmas- I have this mate, see, and his niece popped up out of the blue, had travelled quite a way, since he hadn't been by for the holiday." Perry chattered as he tapped his number into the phone, "so, it's not just the crazy smart doing the stupid things they shouldn't." He grinned and handed the phone back, smoothing his jacket as he prepared to head back off to the office, "and most of us make it through just fine. I'll have to let you know when I've got a case winding down, and we can have that dinner." Perry nodded, saying a quick goodbye before he made his way out of the bakery.

Perry didn't look up from the file he was reading, the question so familiar it might as well have been an echo from his own head. "Because he was mad, Hiro." It was far from a satisfying answer, but it was the only one he'd ever had, and he wanted to save Hiro the pointless wondering.
He was never going to get his answers. The sorcerer responsible was in as high security a prison as possible, and Perry had absolutely no intention of ever making contact with him. Taunting him in his cell was what had gotten Perry into his mess in the first place. "Mad like insane. And angry, actually." He glanced up briefly then, as he turned a page, "and I don't think his casting worked out the way he intended." He'd felt sure, looking in the other mans eyes, that he was done for. This couldn't have been how things were supposed to go. Perry Flynn was little more than a lucky fool.
He focused back on the file in his hands, shifted a bit in his chair. "There are more intreguing mysteries in Swynlake than that one."

Perry-- he tried not to worry. There was enough to keep him busy, yes, and business was certainly doing better than it had when he first opened shop and could hardly afford to heat the office if he wanted to eat three meals a day, but he still hadn't hired a receptionist. Seemed a silly thing to do for just him, but it might make the place seem more legit. Then again, so would another detective or two. Spend money to make it, yada yada. He wasn't much of a businessman.
"Some people prefer to solve things 'in house'" He offered as an explanation to Bruce, shrugging. "I'm not short of work myself, and I wouldn't want to hire anyone who wasn't interested in the kind of commitment this sort of job demands. After the mad house our office could be back when I was on the force, I quite enjoy the peace."

"He doesn't leave if I've forgotten him. Holds a grudge like you wouldn't believe." Or was watching Perry to make sure the same forgetfulness couldn't sieze him at dinner time. It did help make sure the man himself remembered to eat, in fairness, or at least get grocery shopping more often. Damn cat changed Its mind about what it would eat every other week.
Perry chuckled and shook his head, "then you saudered it together with something too big." He corrected, giving the curious box back over so Errol could open it up. "It's another box." He deadpanned, "is it pass the parcel? A puzzle thing?"

It was a good little way to feel accomplished. Perry's main drive had always been helping people, and sometimes that had gotten lost in his work on the force, but it felt easier here. Maybe the money wasn't as good, but police detectives didn't get baked goods as often, which Perry considered a fair trade.
In a place as small as this, community was so much more wrapped up in at all too, which he was less used to and generally less well suited for, but he was trying. Hiro was a good kid, he was glad he had such a bubbly aunt to inject some cheer into his life.
"You don't have to thank me-" Perry started, shaking his head, "Not just for spending time with Hiro, he's... Certainly something." He chuckled, "lends the agency a little life, and he's sharp too. Knows when I need him to clear off." He shrugs, hands in his pockets, "but I can't say no to treats either way, and dinner- 'hah, don't ambush the poor kid with it or anything... But, sure." It'ss not an invite he gets often, but eating all your meals alone can get lonely, of course, and Cass seemed nice. A friend who could bake was never a bad friend to have. "I'll warn you now I can get wrapped up in my work though, and apologise in advance incase I'm late."
