Forever Sassy
You know how sometimes, somebody far removed from you, or someone you don’t even know, passes away and it affects you profoundly? Well, I had an experience like that this weekend… Daniel Marroquin Daniel Marroquin, widely known as Sassy Temptress, one of Long Island’s bona fide drag legends, lost his life on Saturday. The most sudden and unexpected event sent shockwaves throughout the Long…

Six Months In
Today marks six months that I am here in Philadelphia. Boy did that go fast! In these past six months, I feel like I’ve adjusted well to my new surroundings and Philly is definitely home now. I am a part of the landscape and the people around here see me as such. That being said, life hasn’t quite been what I envisioned it to be…not at the moment anyway. I find myself stuck, albeit temporarily,…

4 Years
And here we are again… I don’t know what it is about anniversaries of deaths that make it seem like time has flown by so quickly. Time is funny that way. We live our lives wandering through the days not really thinking about it until one of these anniversaries hits you, and then you say to yourself, “Wow, it’s been x number of years already! It doesn’t seem like that long ago.” And then again,…

John's World Best Jams of 2023
It’s been awhile since I posted anything music on here. I gave up on John’s World Song of the Day awhile back, as it became too much to keep up with on a daily basis, especially with the kind of year I’ve had. Just because I stopped posting Song of the Day, though, doesn’t mean that I’ve stopped my love of music. Like many of you, music has always been an integral part of my life, and in all my…

Moments: Vivere la Vita, Napoli Style
We all know the saying, “a picture is worth a thousand words,” and though it is a cliché, it is certainly a true one. In Moments, I recount the stories behind photos on my camera roll, and here is the latest entry: Tomorrow I’ll be taking my first business trip since I retired from teaching in June. I’ll be headed to Troy, NY in the morning, a place where I’ve been to many times before in a…

It’s been a while since I last posted pictures from my evening walks. I walk almost every evening… It’s the one time of my day where I get the most thinking done. As I walk around, I always see cool things and snap pictures of them., and a lot of them come out pretty cool! Cool Buildings Schuylkill River A lil bit o Christmas

Hiking Adventures Pennsylvania: Manayunk and beyond
Saturday was decidedly going to be the better of the two days, weather-wise, this past weekend, and so I decided to make it a day for hiking and exploring someplace new.  My choice of destinations for the day ended up taking care of both activities and made for a thoroughly enjoyable day.  It actually began when I took my last hike up in Wissahickon Valley Park the week before.  On my way home…

Hiking Adventures Pennsylvania: Wissahickon Valley Park
I’ve been longing to find a nice hiking spot in or near Philadelphia ever since I moved here, and this past Sunday I finally found one. I took heed of some of my students’ recommendations from a couple of weeks ago and headed out to Wissahickon Valley Park, just about a half-hour ride from my apartment in Philly. This was the first hike I’ve taken in quite some time and it felt great to be out…

Looking around and feeling grateful, every day
Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday of the year and I’m a little bummed that I never had the chance to create a Thanksgiving post until now. Even though the holiday has come and gone, I really don’t think that any of us really needs a specific day to reflect on the things we are thankful for. Most everyone has blessings in their life, and whether or not you believe in a higher power…

A little bit of love muddies my waters
“Laugh loud, love true, have fun, but most important, be happy.” These are the closing words uttered by my good friend Deb in her beautiful tribute for me at this year’s retirement party back in June.  I begin this post with her words because they ring so true for me today, and for always.  We don’t always realize just how we are perceived by the world until someone comes along to remind us. …

Philadelphia Day Trips: Peddler's Village
One great thing about moving to another city in another state is finding great new places for enjoying day trips. I absolutely love taking these day-long adventures to find new things to see and do, whether it’s hiking, sightseeing, shopping, or whatever. I’ve been wanting to take my first day trip from Philadelphia for a few weeks now and yesterday was the day. After checking out some Internet…
