A Good chunk of time back i mentioned that I was writing a book. I ended up finishing it when this post was originally published ( I'm editing it as of 04/21/22)
So far, only my close friends have seen/read it, and I really wish it had more attention! So I'm paying tumblr money to reach the rest of you.

This is The Jackalope's Journey! A fantasy novella about a vampire hunter who really doesn't want to be that anymore!
It's currently on itch.io for anyone to purchase!
It's only 5$ for about 40k words and three years of work! I'd love to see people enjoying it.

So. About the Zachary Ying audiobook.
(Please do not screenshot this to share on Twitter because I don’t want this to become a Whole Thing there)
(Nvm, decided to go public on Twitter about this after all. So feel free to share this.)
Turns out my publisher got a JAPANESE VOICE ACTOR to narrate the audiobook, which means all the Mandarin is pronounced wrong. I didn’t discover this until several days after the audiobook went on sale because they never sent me a sample of the VA reading any Mandarin or a preview of the audiobook before it was finished.
I’m pretty annoyed by this because when my publisher first sent me a list of four candidates to choose from, I suspected pretty quickly that they were all either Japanese or Korean, so I asked if any of them were native Mandarin speakers because there’s a LOT of Mandarin in the book so that’s rather important. My publisher assured me they can all handle Mandarin, so I just chose the voice that seemed most suitable for Zack. It did give me pause that that VA’s bio said they were born in Tokyo, but I thought maybe the VA was Chinese-Japanese or something because my publisher wouldn’t lie to me, right?
Well. Turns out they did. Or SOMEONE in the production chain lied, because the final product was clearly done by a Japanese person who could not speak Mandarin. When I raised the issue to my publisher, they said it was the VA’s team that assured them they could handle Mandarin (they definitely cannot). Mandarin is a tonal language, so if you don’t hit the tone right you are saying something completely different. It can’t be half-assed. I even painstakingly sent my publisher a list and a recording of every Mandarin term or phrase in the book, organized by page, but clearly no one involved in production could differentiate the tones because they all came out wrong.
Now my publisher is working on finding an actual Mandarin speaker to rerecord the whole audiobook and I’m just so frustrated because this could’ve been avoided so easily if they’d taken my concern seriously from the start. Or like…didn’t suggest Japanese and Korean VAs for my very Chinese book. Publishers have a LOT of work to do beyond presenting surface-level diversity, smh.
They took the audiobook down from retailers for a bit but I told them it can stay up for now as long as the buyers can automatically get the new version later. I do like the VA’s performance, it’s just a shame about the Mandarin.
If you’re wondering whether to get the Zachary Ying audiobook after finding out about this…Eh. It’s your choice. Just know that in the current version, all the Mandarin is wrong.

Previously on Day 1674 - Day 1676
1 March 2022 - 3 March 2022
I have not been reading a lot but I did get the Legend of Brightblade by Ethan M. Aldridge on Tuesday and I've been slowly reading that.
Day 1674 - 1 March
I don't believe I read on the first
Day 1675 - 2 March
I did read some of the Bird and the Nightingale tho. Definitely cried. It will drive me crazy that I don't know how old everyone is. Like the narration tells you how old Vasya is but not any of her siblings or father and I hate it. Love the story tho.
Day 1676 - 3 March
I also have been reading The Legend of Brightblade. It quite literally is so much brighter than Aldridge's other books but like oh my god it's so pretty. I wanna see the original pages so bad. Can you imagine. Also the story is cute and I love it. AHHHH.
Today's Goals: Finish The Legend of Brightblade.

Comics I've Read pt 2
Okay let's jump in.
Future State: Gotham volume 1
Joshua Williamson and Dennis Culver
I am following every Robins story that is coming out right now and of course Jason is my favorite Robin so of course I'm going to like this series. Jason is working for the magistrate under the order of Bruce Wayne and he works with the new batman to find out what is really going on. It's a great little story and I'm so excited to read more. 5/5
Batman: Urban Legends #8
Assorted authors
I'd read these out of order but 8 has a few beginnings that make the stories easier to get into. I really loved Kate's story specifically but they were all great fun. 5/5
Batman: Urban Legends #9
Assorted authors
Bc I read these out of order, I was getting the beginning of stories that I'd already read the endings to in 10. I still had fun (and honestly I didn't notice that I didn't read the start) In 9 we see the end of the Outsider's story and Kate's and I loved those. Overall it was great fun. 5/5
Batman: Urban Legends #11
Assorted authors
I didn't like this one which usually I like every story and this one was just not it for me. 11 sets up the beginning of two six issue series and while there's a story there I feel like it's just a lot. Also it just leans into the fact that this issue in particular feels really sexist. We see Zatanna and Bruce have a connection previously unknown and they have to save the world from something they did as teenagers. Why does there have to be a romance? Even previously that feels weird. Why can't Zatanna have her own story? Why does the dog get a six issue series all about him but Zatanna has to be paired off with Bruce? (I know it's because it's a Batman anthology series but it's still gross) Eternity fridges a girl, she drowns in her bathtub. Why? What's the point? Wight Witch is literally just "she's connected to Bruce and also brutalized and brainwashed" The story about Ace is the best story but there's still like violence that I wouldn't like in my story about the fucking batdog. And these are just beginnings but not good ones, not ones that make me want to read more. I gave it a 2.25/5
Inferno volume 2
Valerio Schiti, Jonathan Hickman, and Stefano Caselli
Mystique gets Destiny back and automatically that would make this my favorite story, but also the way the story is told is just fun. The vote for the Quiet Council is specifically my favorite scene, just the way you see everyone's motivation and how everything plays out and how you got there it's so good. And not just that, how Mystique is one step ahead but Cypher is two steps ahead. It's very good. 5/5
Trial of Magneto volume 2
Leah Williams, Ryan Stegman
j I enjoyed a lot about this story but it wasn't perfect. Wanda is murdered and Magneto is suspected but was it really him? I do love how this story ends and what becomes of the world after. I do also love the way Wanda's relationship status to Magneto is resolved, but there are moments where characters are forgotten or only appear once for an emotional scene and then disappear for the rest of the story. I gave it a 4/5

Previously on Day 1638 - Day 1673
24 January 2022 - 28 February 2022
This post isn't as big as the last one but I did miss a whole month. I was mainly focused on reading, bc this is my reading blog. I just organized all my books and comics the other day which isn't to say that they weren't organized before I just got more. I haven't really been reading, more than I've been writing certainly, but I was recovering from getting my wisdom teeth out and that took like two weeks bc I couldn't eat, got a fever, couldn't drink, had caffeine withdrawal, got sick. I was also just depressed bc my room was also a mess. I hated it.
I switched over to storygraph, I think before I got my teeth pulled, but there's an update. I finished a couple of books. They were comics, but they were volumes. I finished Future State Gotham vol 1, Batman Urban Legends #8, #9, and #11 (read #10 a bit ago), Inferno vol 2, and The Trial of Magneto vol 1. Had a good fun time. I'll post reviews for those in a bit.

COVER REVEAL TIME✨
I’m thrilled to finally show off the cover for Odder Still, which comes out June 9th. Design and art are by the amazing @layaart! Odder Still features:
💕M/M romance ☢️A Marvel’s Venom-style parasite x human relationship 🗡️An anti-capitalist revolution 🦭An underwater steampunk city of selkies
Rubem is plenty happy keeping to his wine, his pets, and his extensive collection of fishnets. But when a sentient parasite latches to his brainstem, he’s forced out of his comfortable—if lonesome—life in search of someone in the nearby underwater steampunk city who can safely remove it. Here though, both the power-hungry rebels and the tight-gripped monopolies want to viciously dissect his parasite for its energy-producing abilities, and the only person offering him sincere help is the dashing and manipulative philanthropist selkie at the center of all the city’s chaos.
Odder Still exists in the larger These Treacherous Tides universe, but can be read without any prior knowledge of the world and is the start of its own series following Rubem and Tavish’s adventures. Primary rep includes: gay, bi, trans, poc, blindness, chronic depression, and addiction.
There won’t be pre-orders for this book, but you can now add it on goodreads, read chapter one, or sign up for emailed release updates!
