Fans' attitudes toward AI-generated works

Irina Cisternino, a PhD candidate of Stony Brooke University, is writing their research on topics related to technology, art and fandom. You can participate by filling out a survey and additionally, signing up for an interview. The survey is expected to last until at least the end of April, those, who signed up for the interview, will be contacted later. You need to be at least 18 years old to participate in either, be able to understand and speak English and identify as a fan.

A Writer's Guide to Character Development

I don’t know about you guys, but I can only answer “what’s your character’s favorite flavor of ice cream” so many times before I realize those lists are not going to help me actually write the character.

So, instead, I like to drabble practice. Answer these ten key questions about your character (answer in character). Then, after you know them a little better, write ten scenes (NOT part of your planned story) with the ten prompts below. Set it in your world, but it can be whenever you want—pre-story, or post-story, or mid-story. You could even write two scenes for one prompt, contrasting where your character starts the story and where they end up, or write one in first person and then write it again in third.

Just has to cover events that are NOT plot points. The point of the exercise is to come up with scenes you can toss out as soon as you finish them. You might end up using some of the lines or scenes you come up with, but for now you’re just playing around. 

QUESTIONS

What does your character tell everyone is their greatest fear? What is it actually? Is it the same? Why or why not?

What is their greatest strength and greatest weakness? 

Name the most important people to this character. All of them. Family and close friends and lovers.

Does your character have enemies? Who and why?

What is your character’s favorite holiday and why? 

How does your character like to present himself/herself? How do they dress? How do they act? Are they friendly or standoffish? Do they like to make a scene, or are they a wallflower?

What is their love language? How do they express it, and how do they best receive it?

What is their highest virtue? What is something that peers would praise about your character? What do they value most in other people?

Are they messy or neat? Why or why not?

If your character could change one thing about their life, what would it be and why? And, conversely, if they could only save one thing from their life, what would it be?

PROMPTS

Your character has had a bad day. What happened?

Your character’s loved one is sick. What do they do?

It’s your character’s birthday.

Someone is hiding something from your character. How do they uncover what it is?

Your character has just heard the news. A character they loved is dead. Describe the rest of their day.

Your character is on their own for dinner.

Your character has the day to himself/herself. No responsibilities, nothing. What do they do?

In the middle of the night, your character hears a noise in the house.

Your character knows they will die at midnight. What is their last day like?

Your character suddenly develops amnesia. Their loved ones try to jog your character’s memories by taking them to familiar locations and reminiscing.

2. Next, go here - https://whi-data-explorer.vercel.app 

3. And open the file you downloaded through this website. Your pictures and collections should appear here.

I got pretty much all of my pictures. Spent the better part of the past three hours saving everything but at least I have 60-75% of the pictures I saved. Now to figure out how to collage everything...

I didn’t dabble in articles, so I don’t know if those can be saved or not. I would recommend looking on the WeHeartIt reddit for other methods and tips-and-tricks.

Found the news post - the answer is yes and no. (Source) As I understand it, they’re trying to hinder its progress but will not restrict data scraping entirely, nor will they prevent AI-generated works from being posted. I have to admit I am disappointed, but since fan works are a legal grey area I can’t say I didn’t expect this.

I really don’t want to post any more work on AO3. I will post and pin any updates on what I plan to do in light of this information.

“i personally don’t see why you’d want to be a fan of batman” he dresses up in a batsuit to play detective and the cops of gotham city can’t do anything abt it bc that’s how powerful he is. as bruce wayne he’s seen in multiple comics donating millions to charity or hosting galas for them to try and make gotham a better place. he’s adopted like 7 kids because they were orphaned or in tim’s case just lonely, all of whom he adores. he gets to fuck catwoman by some miracle. his worst enemies are a demented clown, a woman who can cause fungi to grow in your brain and kill you from the inside out, a goofy bastard in a green suit who likes riddles, and a dude literally called The Penguin as if that’s at all menacing. his butler is his dad and also his personal assistant and he loves him. his best friend is an alien from outer space who he cannot lose, and he would do anything to make sure he doesn’t, including but not limited to allowing a hell demon to come back from a tomb they’d just enclosed him in and risking the phantom zone to be open long enough for anything to escape just on the CHANCE clark makes it through. he keeps lollipops in his fucking belt for scared kids he meets, courtesy of tom taylor. he’s the type of hero that stays behind to help get people out of a flood.

THAT is batman. THAT is bruce wayne.

don’t look at me and tell me that all batman/bruce wayne amounts to is tom king’s version of him. that all he amounts to as a character is the black label version of bruce wayne we’re forced to see every few comic runs. that zack snyder and christopher nolan’s batmans are The Batman Interpretation. because bruce wayne/batman IS a hero and he loves his family and i’m tired of y’all pretending the only thing he knows how to do is beat the shit out of mentally ill people for giggles and abuse his children just because some shitty men decided he was Dark and Gritty.
