Complete Guide for Oil Painting with Palette Knives
Are you looking for a useful tool to mix paint on the palette? Then the palette knives can best serve your purpose. In maximum cases, artists use paint brushes together for semi-flexible blades to make paintings with sweeping color blends and rich texture. Check the guide of knife oil painting on canvas!
1.      Selection of perfect knife
Two common terms ``painting knife” and “palette knife” are used interchangeably, however, these two terms are completely different. Palette knives are straight with rounded tips and have been designed to mix your paints on palettes. In contrast, painting knives are bent like trowels and can be best used for canvas painting. This specific bending keeps the fingers out of wet paints after application.
You can have different options of styles and sizes in painting knives, generally made from metallic, wooden or plastic substances.
While buying a palette knife, you need to check these things-
●       A sturdy and flexible blade
●       A handle that can be used comfortably
●       A straight and long edge
The blade size is correlated to the painting effects you want to apply. For example, a long blade creates superb sweeping effects of colors. Besides, short blades produce angular and sharp strokes. Additionally, if you want to dab pigmented spots, you need rounded blades. Whereas, sharply-pointed blades help to make scratch-like strokes on painted surfaces to get “sgraffito” effects.
2.      Starting knife oil painting on canvas
Thick pigments like acrylic and oil paint are the best options in the painting technique with knives. For loading the paint on the knife, you can sweep up from the palette with the knife’s long edges. While using the pointed knives for painting daubs, you can just dip the knife tip into your paint.
Hold the knife handle with your thumb and use the wrist so that you can change the angles on your canvas. Different effects can be found according to the movements.
●       The blade’s long side for sweeping pigments across the canvas can be used. It is like a process of spreading butter on the bread.
●       The blade can be pressed into the thickly-painted surface for texture creation
●       The knife’s thin edge can be pressed for creating fine lines.
●       The blade tip is used for the production of small dots.
●       The paint can be scratched into your paint with the help of a pointed blade for revealing the underneath layers.
This knife oil painting on canvas can take multiple months for complete drying. In this context, store the finished canvas carefully to avoid smudges on the paint. Hence, it is an excellent idea for applying a protective glazy layer after it becomes dry.
You can use these knives for highlighting paints on rocks, snow on mountains, building textures in foregrounds to draw rocks, grass or other elements of nature. Further, you can draw lines of tree branches and fences.
