How to write the cold

The way we feel cold is universal, but the way we contextualise it is not. Cold has a variety of connotations for readers, so it's important to decide how to use it, and what mood you want to convey in your scene.

While cold is often associated with negative aspects in writing, if there's anything the winter season teaches us, is that it can be a positive thing as well. Rather than just using the word cold, in your next writing project, try to contextualise it. Describe the weather, the light on the snow, the comfort of warmth after an icy swim, or the fear and loneliness of the dark on a cold night.

Positive aspects

While cold is often associated with negative emotions, using it as a juxtaposition can often help to accentuate the positive feelings you want to convey.

If it's cold outside, a character enjoying a hot chocolate under their duvet will give a much more positive impression than if they were simply staying in bed.

The beauty of the natural world in winter, like snow, ice, and winter foliage can also be used to create a scene of happiness and wonder.

Negative aspects

Cold is often used to describe characters who are emotionally detached, calculating, or generally unfeeling. It's become an easy way to clue your readers in to how they're meant to feel about your character.

There are also more creative ways to use the cold, however, like describing the disappointment of forgetting about a hot drink you put down somewhere and only remembering when it's already gone cold, or the feeling of shock after you first step out of a warm shower.

Let’s admit it, hair is sexy. Or the lack of hair in some cases. So the question I propose is outside of biological function how dose your worlds society view hair?

Is there certain places where hair is shaven of for social asthetics?

Or where it is kept for simular really reasons. Is hair styled in certain ways to denote social standing. Is there a certain way hair is styled to be more sensual?

What would be a rebellious or radical hairstyle for the world if anything. What do people think of hair loss?

Are certain hair colors seen in a certain light same goes for hair texture. Are there hair colors in your setting that do not exist in real life?

Do certain groups of people cover thier hair for modesty or other reasons, it it the norm or an outlier thing?

If your creatures don’t have hair do they have some kind of equivalent?

Who is responsible for styling hair, do people cut it themselves or is that a social bonding ritual or do they let any stranger do it?

What is seen as having too much or too little hair?

Are unibrow attractive for example, or are they seen as an indicator of a superstition or are they just not viewed as desirable. (These are all things that have occurred regarding unibrows)

Is ther some other hair thing like that common to a particular culture, like for widows peaks or mustaches, body hair and lack of body hair.

What is a certain hairstyle that is highly emblematic of a certain culture?

How do people keep hair clean? Do they wash it? Keep it in braids, or dreads, shave it all off and wear wigs. Or do they not keep their hair clean?

What is prefers long or short hair? Are certain haircuts and styles a way to signal gender identity. Do different genders have specific hair signifiers?

Dose hair have any religious, spiritual or magical properties or significance?

How has hairstyles changed over the last two centuries, and why did this change?

Theme: Class Systems

Now it's been awhile since I've researched or worldbuilt this stuff, so I did some side research to make sure I'm bright on ideas

Now class systems are very very complicated. I'm not very confident in them myself, so at the end I've added some nice videos to watch, thing to research on, and places to start.

How many classes is your society divided into? Is it a feudalism system, caste system, slave system, or something else?

Can all classes take part in the ruling class? If not what classes can? What roles in society can rule? Is the ruling class its own class?

How is the population distributed by class? How is the hierarchy built? Who has it the worst? Who has it the best?

What advantages does each class have? What disadvantages does each class have? What decides who's in what class?

Class systems are not just divided by economic status. In fact they can be divided by many things at once. So what divides yours? (race, economic status, birthright, religious, species, magic branches)

What helps keep lower classes low? What helps keep higher classes high?

What type of change is occuring? Is it more peaceful? More chaotic? More violent? Is it looking successful?

What cultural divides play into classes? How does culture differ across classes?

What group controls the society? How does this group do so? What could happen to cause this group to lose this power?

If the current ruling class was overthrown what would the aftermath be like?

Not every class runs off of our five modern ones. Go back in time and class systems change sometimes drastically. So name your class levels. Where do these names derive from?

What class systems did the society go through in the past? How does this affect their modern day?

How do class groups view each other? Is there discrimination? Is there privilege?

What decides a class' value? What makes them that valuable?

What does education, economic status, and potential religion do for the class system?

What does the current events; war, sickness, alliances, etc; affect the class system? (These events tend to be great moments for classes to change)

Authors, revealing a character has a disability during a pivotal moment in the climax of your book is not the brilliant twist you think it is.

It's a cheap trick, and it reveals that you either haven't actually done your research on the disability you're representing or you think the shock value is more important.

Let's break this down.

Having a disability is a fundamental part of your life. It affects everything you do and every choice you make, even if you would describe yourself as fully independent, you're still living with a disability.

For example, I have a prosthetic eye. The lack of vision on that side affects where I sit or stand and how I look at things, even which hands I use for visual tasks (I started drawing with my left hand after I lost my right eye and it was not a deliberate choice). But I also have to take the eye out and clean it regularly, and it's horrific during allergy season let me tell you. Having a prosthetic eye doesn't stop me from living my best life, and neither does my limited vision in my left eye, but it's still something I have to accommodate.

Taking that part of a character's life and withholding it from the reader for a cool plot twist is essentially lying about a fundamental part of a character's life which has surely shaped who the character is and how they view the world, and I can think of no good reason to do that. You want to withhold the truth from other characters? Be my guest. But this isn't something you can withhold from the reader without feeling like you're lying to deliver a gut punch later, or worse, erasing the character's disability except when it's plot important. And consider the nuance and tension you could add to the story by showing this part of their character from the beginning.

If the story and craft reasons haven't convinced you, consider the good that can come of positive representations of characters with disabilities being the heroes of their own stories, with their disability. And consider how it feels to have your disability used as a plot twist with no thought to what that disability means for the rest of the character's life.
