Remain Vigilant
Yuzi has been on the road with her traveling companions for quite some time and they've finally made it to the city of Markarth. The city is strange and new but something appears to be lurking underneath. Questions grow and Yuzi needs answers.
Find it on AO3
"Finally, we made it— Markarth!"
Yuzi fell to the ground and let out a purr, her feet sore from the long journey from Riften.
Tiny-One didn't pause, walking past the dramatic Khajiit with Sterling in tow. Sylilron stopped next to his friend worriedly.
"Yuzi, come on. Before they leave us behind."
Yuzi scrunched her face. "Ugh... But I don't want to! My feet hurt! Hey, do you think Tiny-One can make my feet not hurt?"
"I can cut them off." Tiny-One had stopped, whipping around to glare at the two stragglers. Sylilron straightened immediately, glancing down at Yuzi who had tensed before leaping back to her feet.
The group resumed pace, approaching the Dwarven city’s large looming gates. Only time would tell if what they were looking for was here or not.
-
Markarth was bustling, with people milling about as the group wandered in. Tiny-One kept pushing forward, the group trailing after her. Yuzi peered around the market curiously; the atmosphere here was much different than Riften's. While Riften remained gloomy and people wary of strangers, this city appeared as if the people didn’t even trust themselves, throwing looks at their friends and neighbours.
"The rumour was that a Vigilant of Stendarr was here... But Markarth is large— where do you think we should start?" Sterling addressed the small group leader.
Tiny-One pulled her hood up over her head, concealing her face before answering. "We split off and ask around. Meet back in the market at sun high." Her eyes flicked back to the three behind her. "Sylilron, be wary. This city is crawling with Thalmor, keep away from the Jarl's keep. Tsiyuzi, don't cause any trouble." She ended the sentence with a glare at Yuzi.
Sylilron nodded, pulling his own hood over his head to better conceal his identity.
Sterling glanced over at him before looking back to Tiny-One. "I'll ask around the Jarl's keep then. I'm sure they have some sort of information."
Tiny-One nodded. "I'll handle the mine area, then. The mines here are attached to the prison so I should be able to get some underground information."
"I can handle the markets then... Unless, you'd like to, Yuzi." Sylilron smiled down at his friend softly.
Yuzi shook her head. "I can handle the inn. It's not like anything bad is gonna happen."
"This city is full of unrest," Tiny-One warned. "Be cautious and don't say too much. If people realize what we're here for, there will be trouble. Assume the walls have ears, understood?"
The group nodded before splitting off. Yuzi watched them all go before navigating her way to the inn. Tiny-One had mentioned the unrest and now, as she watched the people, she could see it. The citizens appeared to carry a certain tension in their faces. Watching each other as if none of them knew who they could trust. Her brow furrowed, and she turned away, making her way towards the inn. Whatever lurked in the city to cause such disquiet was not her problem to deal with.
The atmosphere didn't change once she reached the inn. Guests turned their heads to watch her enter, their eyes narrowed with suspicion. Yuzi paid them no mind as she approached the counter. She took a seat, waiting for the barkeep to address her.
Her waiting paid off as he came over. The barkeep eyed her warily, grabbing a tankard. "What can I get for you?"
"Milk, please." She smiled, and the barkeep gave her a strange look but nonetheless poured her a glass, sliding it over.
Yuzi took a sip, letting out a soft purr.
"Khajiit, I swear..." the barkeep muttered, turning away.
Yuzi glared at him, clearing her throat. He met her eyes, unwavering despite her clear anger.
"I heard a rumour and was wondering if you could help clear up some of the details," Yuzi's tail lashed; as frustrating as the Nord's clear intolerance was, she couldn't cause trouble.
"City is full of rumours," he replied. "You're gonna have to speak clearer, cat."
"I heard there's been strange people passing through lately." She snapped, holding back harsher words. She clenched her fists, the urge to start a scene brewing. /Next time I'm in Markarth... I'll show this guy./
The barkeep glared at her. "Only strange one passing through has been you. Strange that the guards even let you in. Who'd you bribe, cat?"
Yuzi's ear laid flat as she unclenched her fists, instead digging her claws into the wooden counter, gouging the wood. She slowly stood up, fur bristling as blood began to pound in her ears. "You son of a-"
"Yuzi!"
Yuzi's head snapped back as Sylilron hurried in. He grabbed her arm, giving her a worried look before turning to the barkeep. "I apologize for my friend. We'll be going now." He tossed some septims on to the counter before pulling Yuzi out onto the street.
Yuzi ripped her arm out of his grasp. "How dare you? I could handle myself. I wasn't going to do anything!"
Sylilron flinched, looking away from her. "Sorry... I- I know that. I just... I heard what he said and it's fine. I already got some information so- there was no point leaving you there. I was coming so we could head back together-"
Yuzi watched her friend stammer and sighed, shoulders dropping as her anger faded away. "No, it's fine, Syl. I was gonna do something that would've caused problems for Tiny-One. You were right to stop me. That guy just got under my skin." She dropped her gaze to her feet, ears flat to her head.
Sylilron wrapped his arms around his friend tightly. "It's okay. Hey, we have time - let's wander around the city? Before we have to meet up with the others." He pulled away holding the Khajiit at arm's length.
She nodded and Sylilron grasped one of her hands tightly, guiding her further into the city.
"It's really pretty. It's cool how the people here adapted the old ruins to live in, you know." Sylilron spoke, guiding them up some of the stairs. "I never did come to Markarth back when I was forced along with the Thalmor. I actually didn't know they had a strong presence here until Tiny-One said something."
"Really? You never overheard anything from the Thalmor?"
Sylilron shook his head. "No, they were pretty careful about who was allowed to hear what. While their presence isn't a secret, maybe what they're doing here is."
They continued to climb the steps of the city, coming to a stop near the temple of Dibella.
"I heard in the market that despite the Thalmor being here, there's still a temple of Talos. Though it's not really frequented anymore. I guess it makes sense considering all things considered. Just odd they didn't repurpose it, you know."
"Well, Tiny-One did call the city restless. With the civil war ongoing that might be why. Most cities have a few Stormcloaks sympathizers," Yuzi pointed out, gazing out over the city.
Sylilron tightened his grip on Yuzi's hand. "Yeah, that's true..."
"Did you find the information Tiny-One was looking for?" Yuzi changed the subject, eager to move to something less depressing.
Sylilron nodded, "Actually I did. I overheard some people discussing a strange man hanging out around an old abandoned house. They didn't say if he was a Vigilant of Stendarr or not, but I think he might be our guy."
Yuzi grinned, "That's great, since I hit a dead end. Maybe the other two can confirm it."
The sun had continued to rise, nearly reaching its peak and warming her fur. Yuzi looked over at Sylilron. "Let's hurry back, maybe we'll beat them there."
Sylilron nodded, walking with Yuzi back down the market.
-
Tiny-One was already waiting by the time they made it back - the vampire leaned against a wall under an overhang, lurking in its shadow. She scowled at the people walking by before her gaze flicked over, landing on her companions. The two made it over quickly and stood next to her.
"Don't say anything." Tiny-One spoke, cutting off Sylilron as he opened his mouth. His teeth clacked together as he snapped his jaw shut.
Tiny-One gestured with her head over to where a guard was watching them, but kept her gaze locked forward.
Yuzi glanced at the guard, confusion filling her head. Had they done something wrong? Had the innkeeper said something to give them trouble?
Behind them, some giggles were heard. Sylilron turned his head, hand clenching tight on Yuzi's, and she winced before following his gaze. Sterling was speaking to a woman, a smirk on his lips. Yuzi's gaze flicked over to Sylilron. Her friend's brow was furrowed, his eyes flashing with envy, then hurt. He turned his head away, keeping his grip tight.
Yuzi rubbed a thumb along the back of her friend's hand before slowly extracting hers. Irritation bubbled up inside her, and she whirled around to give Sterling hell.
"Tsiyuzi, don't."
She froze, glancing back at Tiny-One. Tiny-One stood up straight and walked away from Sylilron and Yuzi.
"Don't cause a scene. Come on, let's walk. Sterling already knows where to find us." Tiny-One said, turning and walking up the city path.
Sylilron and Yuzi looked at each other before following after their small leader.
Tiny-One acknowledged the guards as she walked past, locking eyes with them before she continued on into the city.
Soon the group ducked under some stairs, into a shadowed corridor. Tiny-One pressed open a door before sliding inside. Their steps echoed off the cobblestone as they descended the steps into an old temple.
Yuzi let out a gasp as she took in her surroundings. Lit only by the muted amber glow of several candles stood a shrine to Talos. The statue loomed over them. The ground was covered with debris and litter.
"You weren't kidding, Syl. There really was a temple still," Yuzi said, she was full of awe. She had seen shrines to the other Divines, but never one to Talos.
"We can talk here - not many people come here, given that worship of Talos is outlawed." Tiny-One spoke, lowering her hood. Sylilron followed suit.
Yuzi stiffened as the door creaked open behind them, spinning around before relaxing as Sterling appeared. He smiled softly at them all, dipping his head respectfully.
"I apologize for the wait. I was still gathering some intel."
"More like wasting your time flirting," Yuzi muttered, giving him the stink eye.
Sterling raised his brows. "Flirting gets results sometimes. You would do well to learn that."
She curled her lip. "Okay, pretty boy. Sounds like a load of shit to me."
"Yuzi, please," Sylilron whispered, before smiling apologetically at their companion. Sterling met his gaze before shaking his head and looking to Tiny-One.
"We need to be cautious. It seems that asking questions was enough to draw attention to ourselves," Tiny-One began. "The miners didn't know much about our Vigilant of Stendarr. In fact, they barely wanted to speak to me at all." She cupped her chin thoughtfully. "There's definitely something wrong with this town. I'm not sure how much has to do with him, though."
"There wasn't much at the Keep, either. They seemed wary to speak to me at all," Sterling said, crossing his arms.
"All that flirting and you got nothing? I thought you said flirting got results," Yuzi said smugly, smirking as the Breton glared at her.
"Well, do you have anything to show for yourself?" he shot back.
Yuzi's ears flattened to her head. "Well, no- but Syl did!" she was quick to retort, turning to Sylilron, who blinked in surprise.
"Oh! Yeah, I did actually. Uh, some folks in the market said a strange man was lingering around an abandoned house for a few days now. They weren't sure what he was up to but it sounds promising," Sylilron said, smiling nervously.
Tiny-One hummed. "Well it's the only lead we've got so I suppose we should follow it. I'd like to leave sooner rather than later, I don't like how the guards have been watching us."
"Why are they watching us?" Yuzi asked.
Tiny-One glanced over to Yuzi. "The city is pretty on edge most of the time. Markarth has a long history with the Forsworn who live outside the city. Now there's also the civil war. There's a reason why this temple wasn't destroyed - despite being loyal to the Empire there's a large population here that still worships Talos." She crossed her arms, tilting her head up. "Still, they seem even more on guard than they should be, all things considered..."
Tiny-One shook her head. "Well that doesn't matter, it's pretty early in the afternoon now. Perhaps we should rest at the inn before going to this abandoned house tonight. Did you happen to get a location, Sylilron?"
Sylilron nodded. "Yes I got it. I can take us there tonight."
Yuzi tensed at the mention of the inn, hunching in on herself. "Do we have to go to the inn?"
"What did you do?" Sterling smirked. "You really couldn't go 5 minutes without causing trouble, huh?"
"Shut up! It's not my fault, the innkeeper just..." She scowled at the ground, not meeting anyone's eyes.
"Yuzi didn't do anything wrong. The innkeeper gave her a hard time earlier. I overheard when I got there." Sylilron was quick to defend his friend, laying his palm on her back softly.
Sterling's gaze flicked to his hand, and then to Yuzi frowning.
"It can't be helped." Tiny-One sighed, shaking her head. "We'll just stay here until nightfall. Are we in agreement?"
Sterling curled his lip but nodded, while Yuzi and Sylilron sounded off their agreement.
"Good, rest up. We have no idea what we will encounter."
-
The city was quieter at night, Yuzi noticed. The only ones wandering around appeared to be them and the guards. They walked along the river that ran through the city. It turned out the abandoned house wasn't that far from where the temple was and they quickly came upon a man.
Studying him from a distance, Tiny-One gave a nod. "That's him, the robes are common among the Vigilants of Stendarr. Let's go."
"Excuse me, sir!" Sterling called, walking ahead of the group.
The man turned, studying the group before him. "Greetings, what brings you out so late?"
Sterling smiled pleasantly. "We're simply enjoying the evening. It's rather lovely out, after all. What about yourself? It's rare to see a Vigilant of Stendarr around these parts of Skyrim."
The man nodded. "You would be correct. My name is Vigilant Tyranus, and I am investigating this house. Would you happen to know anything? Seen anyone enter or leave?"
"Why do you ask?" Tiny-One cut in as she stepped forward.
"We believe this house was used for Daedra worship. Evil rites and so forth."
Tiny-One nodded. "Do you happen to need any assistance?"
"I was actually about to head on inside. It would be nice to have somebody to watch my back."
Tiny-One smiled. "We would be happy to assist you. Lead the way."
The group was guided into the house, which had clearly been abandoned for some time. Dust was layered thickly on every surface. Yuzi wrinkled her nose as she watched a spider descend from the ceiling.
"As you can see-"
There was a loud thud and Yuzi whipped her hand around. Sylilron was covering his mouth in shock, taking a step back into the closed door. Sterling averted his gaze away from the scene.
Tyranus lay on the floor, blood slowly flowing from his head. A large spike of ice had gone through his skull, protruding out of the eye socket in a grotesque display.
Yuzi turned to Tiny-One with shock. Her hand was still glowing faintly, light blue and the air was tinged with cold. Her gaze was hardened and unwavering. She stepped over the body, her boot disturbing the growing pool of blood.
"Let's hurry. There should be a shrine around here somewhere."
The other three remained frozen and Yuzi slowly moved forward. "Why… Why did you kill him? He didn't do anything."
Tiny-One stopped and looked at them. "He didn't do anything yet. Remember, we're here looking for a Daedra. He wouldn't have been so friendly once he found out."
She began moving deeper into the house. Sylilron squeezed his eyes shut, taking a step forward. Sterling reached out to grab his hand, pulling him closer to himself and guiding him around the body deeper to follow after her.
Yuzi stared at the corpse for a moment, then to Tiny-One's back as she moved forward. She shook her head, trailing after the group.
The deeper they went into the house, the atmosphere appeared to grow more oppressive. Sylilron hadn't let go of Sterling's hand, the Bosmer’s gaze directed at his feet. Sterling glanced at Sylilron, and continued along with him.
"Kill her. Crush her bones. Tear at her flesh. You will kill. You will kill, or you will die."
Yuzi froze, her head whipping around, startled by the voice ringing through the house. Sylilron had jumped, gripping Sterling's hand tighter, leaning closer to the Breton. Tiny-One took pause, her gaze darkening.
"Looks like we've found who we're looking for."
Yuzi ripped her gaze back to Tiny-One in shock. "Is this a normal Daedra? We shouldn't have killed that guy! He could've helped, he has experience with these things!"
"Hardly," Tiny-One snapped. "This isn't my first rodeo with this particular Daedra. Just ignore the voices and follow me."
Yuzi eyes followed warily after Tiny-One, only turning to meet Sylilron's eyes. The Bosmer looked equally wary as they continued after Tiny-One.
"Kill her. What if she does to you what she did to the Vigilant? Crush her."
Yuzi winced, clenching her first tightly as she stepped forward. The voice seemed louder the further into the house they got.
"Weak. Crush her before she crushes you."
Yuzi stopped, her hand drifting to her bow, eyes becoming unfocused. Her fingers closed around her bow, slowly pulling it free.
Yuzi yelped as lightning hit her hand. The bow clattered to the ground loudly. Tiny-One glared at her from ahead.
"Are you really so weak as to fall for Daedra tricks?" Tiny-One snapped. "Keep your head, Tsiyuzi, or I will bind you where you stand."
Yuzi bent down to grab her bow, pulling it tightly to her chest. "I'm sorry, I'm just a little uneasy."
"Just follow me, we'll be fine."
As the group made it to the basement, Tiny-One looked around, before letting out a hum of approval. "Here we are."
The wall was open, a cave that opened deeper into the underground. The passageway was narrow, forcing the group to proceed single file down and deeper into the Earth. The air’s oppression was intense now, filling the ambience with an unseen hatred. Yuzi shuddered, glancing nervously around, until her eyes landed on a black shape in the distance.
"An altar?"
"Yes, to Molag Bal," Tiny-One responded. Yuzi squeezed past Sylilron who reached for her. She waved him off and curiously approached the altar.
"A rusty mace? Weird." She stepped up to the altar, reaching for the mace slowly.
"Tsiyuzi, do not-"
Sharp bars sprung up and Yuzi let out a shout. She covered her ears, crouching down to the ground.
Tiny-One let out a sigh of frustration. "Tsiyuzi, you should know better than to go touching things you don't understand."
"I know!" Yuzi cried. "Just get me out of here!" She grabbed the bars of the cage, ears dropping.
Sterling muffled a laugh at the sight and Sylilron elbowed him, cutting off the chuckles. "I'll get you out, Yuzi, just-"
"Fool! Did you expect to leave here without paying some sort of price? I am Molag Bal, the Lord of Domination, weakling."
Yuzi stiffened, turning to the altar. Sylilron jumped, slipping behind Sterling who narrowed his eyes carefully.
"Let her go," Tiny-One snapped. "We need information, Molag Bal, you can keep your stupid mace."
"There is a price for my services, mortal, even for you. Information and freedom comes at a price."
Tiny-One clicked her tongue. "What sort of price?"
"A Daedric Lord has his enemies, and my rival Boethiah had her priest desecrate this altar. Left it here to decay. Until you came."
"I really don't care. Let the Khajiit go, and give me the information I want. We'll just destroy the altar should you refuse." Tiny-One was unfazed, Sylilron and Sterling watching her warily as she spoke back harshly to the Lord of Domination.
"Fine, your companion will get the freedom your kind enjoys so much. The information I will not give so easily."
The bars lowered quickly; Yuzi leapt to her feet and jumped to Sylilron, who reached for her and hugged her tightly.
"What do you want for the information?" Tiny-One crossed her arms staring down at the altar.
"I want submission. I want the priest who descreated my altar to bend his knee and give me his soul. He comes by to perform Boethiah's insulting rites at my altar, but he's been missing. Captured and bound. Left to rot. Save him. Let him perform his rite one more time. And when he does, we will be waiting for him."
"Do you know where he's located?"
Sylilron and Yuzi looked at Tiny-One in surprise. She isn't seriously considering this, is she?
"You mortals call it Hag Rock Redoubt. I await your return with the priest."
Silence rang out in the small cave, before Tiny-One turned around. "Let's go, no point lingering around here."
"He wants us to kill someone else! You can't seriously be considering this!" Yuzi cried out, stumbling after Tiny-One as she guided the group out of the bowels of the house.
"A Daedra worshipping priest. I think killing one of those is hardly an issue," Sterling said from the back. "We need information, so we don't have much of a choice."
"Uhm… you know, Yuzi and I tagged along, but will you tell us what it is you need information about? It's strange that only a Daedra can provide what you need," Sylilron said.
"We didn't tell you?" Sterling asked. "Well Tiny-One is best to explain…"
As they came up to the entryway of the house, Yuzi glanced at the body that remained unmoved before looking back at Tiny-One. "I think it's time you told us what exactly it is we're doing," she said.
Tiny-One paused and looked at the group before sighing softly. "Alright, I'll explain everything once we're on the road again. It's a long story - I hope you're ready to listen."

The word slowly came into focus. Tiny-One's vision was fading in and out, and she tipped her head back to get a feel for her surroundings. Hands gripped under her arms painfully, dragging her body across cobblestone ground. Her head throbbed with pain. The room was dark, the ground rough, littered with loose stones and slightly damp. Voices echoed off the walls but the words failed to register in her head.
She struggled to recall what happened to her as memories slowly flashed in her mind. A target, a mysterious assailant. She gritted her teeth, feeling foolish for having fallen for such a trap. The tip had obviously been too good to be true, but she had still hoped.
As she was dragged further down, the voices became louder. Tiny-One could barely register a light emanating from a chamber up ahead. The volume of the voices continued to grow and slowly, she was pulled into a brightly lit room. She flinched at the sudden change, squinting at the robed figures standing off to the side facing forward. The chanting did not sound like a familiar language, and the voices only increased the pounding in her head.
Tiny-One noticed an Altmer standing behind an altar with his hands raised over his head. The chanting grew as she was dragged closer to the altar, the splitting ache in her head increasing by the second. Her body was lifted and placed roughly onto the stone altar. She looked to the Altmer, a sickening dread growing as she struggled to move, grinding her teeth in her disorientation. The Altmer reached for a blade from a robed figure behind him before turning to her. His face was expressionless as he met her eyes.
Tiny-One swung an arm up and grabbed the Altmer's arm, weakly digging sharp nails into his skin. The Altmer was not phased, merely meeting her eyes with a bored look. Hands grabbed her shoulders and forced her back down, prying her grip off of the Altmer. The chanting had reached a crescendo. She clenched her teeth, kicking at the air as she tried to get free. Her vision darkened as the Altmer raised the blade over his head before plunging it deep into her heart.
-----
Tiny-One sat up, clutching her chest. Her head was spinning, dizzied by the memories that flashed through her mind. She took a deep breath and moved her hand away, but no blood stained her fingers. She furrowed her brow in confusion before gazing around her surroundings. She seemed to be somewhere else; eerie blue torches hung off the walls and cast a faint glow, devoid of any warmth. She was no longer lying on the altar and there was no sign of Altmer or any of the cultists. The chanting had been replaced with a faint groaning that appeared to be coming from a different room. She hauled herself to her feet, wary gaze flicking to and fro as she took in her environment. The air was cold, a freezing chill that settled itself deep within her, seeping down to the bone. She stepped forward, noticing a tunnel towards the front of the room.
Realizing she was alone in the room, Tiny-One let go of some of the tension she was holding. Her brow furrowed as she gazed at the ground in front of her. Did I die? She closed her eyes, envisioning her last moments before slowly opening them again. She took a deep breath as she straightened her spine. She had to be alive in some way if she had woken up again, which meant there had to be a way out. Her eyes drifted back to the tunnel and she took even strides forward, preparing herself for the slightest hint of danger.
As she rounded the corner, a faint rattling could be heard echoing off the walls. She peered down the hall, squinting as she pressed forward. The rattling got louder, and in the distance she could see a door at the end of the hall. Her pace picked up as she moved forward, before she jerked back in surprise as a figure stepped out of the shadows.
A strange skeleton was pacing around the tunnel. Chains rattled around its wrists and ankles, and its tattered grey robes were in a sordid condition. Most disconcertingly, while the body of the skeleton seemed human, the skull took the shape of a bird’s. The strange creature was muttering to itself as it passed in front of the door. It had not yet noticed its visitor.
Tiny-One slowly began to prepare a casting to get past the creature. She studied it carefully, but no matter how she parsed it, this thing was Daedric, and she was locked in a room with it. Flames roared to life on her hands and the skeleton turned sharply in surprise. Their eyes met and Tiny-One was surprised to see panic in the Daedra’s eyes.
"No, wait! Please don't hurt me, I'm a prisoner, too!" it cried, cowering down and raising its arms to cover its head.
Hunched over, the skeleton was only at Tiny-One's height. She frowned, but didn't lower her hand. "A prisoner?"
The skeleton peeked at her. "Uhm. Yes. You see, we’re locked in here. So. We're prisoners. You know. 'Cause we’re locked in here with no way out."
She scowled. "I think I get it," she snapped, before firing a fire ball past its head. The creature let out a yelp, leaping back and staring at her. She glared at it, her eyes sharp. "How are you a prisoner here? You're a Daedra, are you not?"
The creature let out an offended gasp. "How dare you?! Can't you see I- oh." It looked down at its hands as if it was just now realizing what it looked like. "I forgot. I've been alone for a while. I'm not a Daedra, though."
"Really? You sure look like one."
"I'm aware." It sighed. "My name is... Well, you may call me Dykeine. Despite how I look, I swear to you. I'm an Altmer from the island of Summerset." Dykeine's eyes somehow conveyed his earnesty. "I can prove to you I'm not a Daedra if you'll let me. We just need to break out of this room. I've heard the guards talking about some other trouble prisoners. They know a way out of this plane."
"This plane? Where exactly are we?" Tiny-One narrowed her eyes, apprehension prickling up her spine.
"Coldharbour. This is Molag Bal's domain." Dykeine met her gaze, finally standing to his full height and towering over the Argonian.
"That's just great." Tiny-One's lip curled in disgust. "How do I know I can trust you?"
"You can't, but I swear that I need out just like you, so let's work together."
She approached the locked door Dykeine had been fiddling with before and studied it carefully, placing a clawed hand on it. "It's not enchanted. How were you struggling so much?" She squinted back at Dykeine who was quick to avert his gaze.
"I don't have much experience with picking locks or things like that…" He admitted before peeking over at her.
"Who said anything about picking locks?" Tiny-One stepped back and he watched her. Her hands took up a blue glow, magic swirling around her. "Move."
Dykeine pressed against the wall as Tiny-One released a large blast of ice bolts at the door. The spikes cracked against the hinges, and the door banged open, falling off the damaged hinges.
Dykeine blinked in surprise and looked at the Argonian with some fear. "I see force was the answer I was missing…"
Tiny-One snorted before walking to the now open door. She paused to look back at the skeleton. "Well, come on. You know the way out right?"
He nodded and quickly scrambled after her. "Of course! Just follow me!"

Tiny-One sat astride her large gelding, scanning the foliage along the empty roads. She had slowed, taking a more leisurely pace the closer she got to Davon's Watch. The scenery had changed noticeably as she crossed into Dunmer territory; ash and stone littered the landscape, and large mushrooms stood tall next to rivers of lava. Tiny-One continued pushing the horse forward along the road.
On the horizon, she could see the walls of Davon's Watch standing tall above the ashen haze. Clicking her tongue, she pushed the horse forward into a trot, picking up speed to sooner reach her destination.
As she looked to her left, she could see the ocean, where citizens lined the shore with catapults and other equipment. Tiny-One frowned.
I'll have to leave before any fighting begins. She turned her eyes away, continuing on, hoping to reach the city by midday.
----
Davon's Watch was bustling. People moved from stand to stand, grabbing a variety of goods as the midday sun beat down on them. Accompanying the stifling heat was an air of unease that only helped to quash the mood in the square down even further. Word of an attack from the Daggerfall Alliance was on the tip of everyone's tongues, and citizens expressed worry for what it would mean for their city.
Pushing through the crowd, Tiny-One made her way deeper into the city. Her hood was pulled up over her head, and she was able to easily slip through the crowd *unnoticed by the *citizens, preoccupied as they were by their own concerns. . She approached the inn, climbed the steps and slipped inside.
The inn was darker, with few windows, but they succeeded in keeping the air cool with little heat making its way through the gaps. Tiny-One approached the counter and laid her gold down.
"I'd like a room, please. Top floor?"
The innkeeper nodded, inspecting her gold. "Aye. Top floor, to yer left. You 'ave it for a night."
She dipped her head and made her way quickly up the stairs, where she proceeded down the cobble hallways. Once she reached her designated room, she opened the door and slipped inside, shutting it behind her. Tiny-One couldn't settle yet, however; instead she dropped her hood and took off her robe, hanging it up on the door before smoothing out her navy feathers. Then, gathering her focus, she waved her hand as she began to set up protective wards around her room. Only once she was finished did she let out a sigh, slowly relaxing now that she was alone and out of the sun. Safe from any prying eyes or ears.
She slipped a bag off of her arm, pulling out a book and a letter. She scowled, unfolding the letter carefully and smoothing out the edges as she scanned the page. The letter contained details of her contract; a Dunmer by the name Talvus Daryril, a seedy merchant rumoured to have dealings with slave trafficking. Tiny-One pulled out another piece of parchment, jotting down notes. Luckily for her, the Dunmer had a pattern she could take advantage of — in the morning, he would cross through the plaza on the lookout for tourists. He typically did this for several hours before disappearing outside the city walls.
As she finished jotting her notes down, Tiny-One glanced towards the window. Hours appeared to have passed, the sun setting over the horizon. She rose to her feet, packing up her notes as she went, then slid her robe back over her shoulders and buckled it closed.
Tiny-One made her way out of the inn and into the city. Even at night the city retained some of its energy, with Dunmer, Nord and Argonian alike taking part in what the night had to offer. She watched the people mill about before making her way toward the market district in the shadows.
Some stalls remained open, and citizens were still stopping by to purchase equipment or armour. She could see some food stalls operating still, drunkards stopping to grab food before they were inevitably sent home or picked up by the guard.
Distracted, Tiny-One let out a grunt as she bumped into someone. She took a step back, ready to snap at whoever was standing in her way.
In front of her stood an Imperial woman, her robes red and her hood pulled up, but her face remained visible. She began to smile pleasantly down at Tiny-One.
"My apologies." The woman dipped her head as she spoke. "I saw you and had something to speak to you about most urgently."
Tiny-One narrowed her eyes, taking a step back. "Alright. It's fine." She glanced around, making sure the crowd wasn't paying attention. Her suspicions about the woman rose.
"I understand you're here for… a job. I have information that may be relevant to you and would also help me. Might we speak?"
Tiny-One stiffened. She assumed she had come into the city unnoticed, but evidently, this woman knew of her presence and why she was here. She glanced around again, but no one appeared to be paying the two any mind. "Fine. Come with me."
Tiny-One turned, slipping down an unoccupied alley and listening to the unhurried footsteps of the woman behind her as she followed suit. As they made it deeper in she spun around, hand glowing blue. "Talk, now." Tiny-One curled her lip in a snarl at the woman.
The Imperial continued to smile pleasantly at Tiny-One, unphased by the aggression or the potential of bodily harm. "If my information is correct, you are here for Talvus Daryril. You see… my beloved niece…" Her smile faded and she raised a hand to her eyes, beginning to cry softly. "I believe…. I believe he's taken my niece."
Tiny-One scowled, not yet lowering her guard. "Look. I feel for you, I do, but I'm not here to rescue people."
The woman nodded. "I know… I know this but I can pay you most generously. Please, you have to save my niece. I have information that can help you…"
Tiny-One heaved a sigh, lowering her hand and letting the magic fade. She glared at the woman. "What's the pay?"
"30,000 gold coins."
Tiny-One clicked her tongue. On one hand, Tiny-One was an assassin; she did not save lives, she only took them. The gold was an amount that could not be scoffed at though. Enough to treat Hildegard back at the Sanctuary, or to ensure some comfort for her family for a while. She closed her eyes and nodded. "Fine. Alright, so what's the information?"
The woman looked up, a smile stretched across her face. "Oh thank you! Thank you! Talvus Daryril is said to be holed up in his home in the residents quarters. There's said to be an auction soon, so he is busy preparing the goods. You should be able to strike most easily!"
Tiny-One hummed. The information was helpful; perhaps the contract would be cleared up faster than she thought and she could return to help Kor and others back on the Coast.
Weighing her choices, Tiny-One slowly nodded. "Fine. But I expect the gold on the safe return of your niece."
The woman nodded eagerly. "Of course! Thank you! Thank you!"
Tiny-One moved past the woman, and made her way out of the alley. She turned back slowly. "I'll return her tomorrow."
Tiny-One quickly made her into the city again, heading back to the inn swiftly to send a note to her family and let them know she would be able to return sooner than hoped.
----
The morning was light, with the sun shining through the window of the inn. The sun touched Tiny-One's black scales, *their smooth surface gleaming brightly in the warm rays. Her eyes were already open, watching. Having not slept the night before, she had little to prepare for and her excursion back into the city was made in good time. The residents quarters were far away from her inn, so she made her way there steadily and with caution.
This area of town was quiet during the day, with most people going to work or heading out to shop. Some were likely along the shore, awaiting an attack that may not occur.
Talvus Daryril's house was small and inconspicuous. Tiny-One approached slowly, moving a nearby crate to the window. She stood on top of the crate and peered inside, but the interior was dark and she couldn't see much. She frowned, a feeling of dread beginning to build in her gut. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath to focus herself — she had promised, and the sooner the job was done, the sooner she would be able to return home and relax.
Tiny-One crept to the door, picking the lock and stepping slowly inside the shadowy abode. She looked around, stepping in further as her dread grew. Her hand slowly began to glow as she delved in deeper. The home was layered in dust and didn't appear to be occupied — not for a few years, at least. A chill ran up her spine, and suddenly, she couldn’t shake the suspicion that she had wandered directly into a trap. Her mind raced, thinking of the gold and her contract, though she took a breath to relax herself. A clatter broke the silence, and she moved forward with purpose.
In the other room, gazing up at her with wide-eyed fear, was Talvus Daryril. A cloth was wrapped over his mouth, his hands and feet tied. He kicked out in a panic, rattling the chair as he attempted to free himself.
Tiny-One took a step back, shocked by the sight. Her heart was pounding as her fears were all but confirmed. As she began to retreat, her back abruptly hit what felt like a wall of flesh. She quickly spun to see who was behind her, before pain flashed across the back of her skull.
Tiny-One collapsed, her vision becoming foggy as she dropped to the dusty floor. Through the throbbing pain in the back of her head, she managed to gaze at the figure who now stood over her, before her world slowly faded to black.

Coldharbour Bound - One
Life in the Dark Brotherhood was fine, the jobs were good and Tiny-One had her family. A new job sends Tiny-One somewhere she never thought she would go, and would be the beginning to something bigger.
--- Find this fic on AO3 << Previous | Next >>
A Nord stands alone in his home, while outside a blizzard rages on. His head is reeling after finding his wife lying prone on a blood covered floor in front of their fireplace. He shuts his eyes tightly as he hears a very deliberate crash behind him. He doesn't address the new body in the room, refusing to face his would-be killer.
"Not going to beg for your life?"
He shuts his eyes, straightening up and turning his head. "Why should I have any words for the likes of you?"
The intruder is covered in dark scales, a hood pulled over her head. She flips a knife in her clawed hand and inspects the blade. "Well that's fine. I don't care either way." She rises to her feet, sheathing her blade. She begins soundlessly stepping forward.
The Nord turns fully and draws a sword, making an attempt to attack the assassin; but he quickly freezes in place, eyes wide with surprise.
The Argonian lowers her hand, the frosty hue disappearing slowly. The Nord crashes to the ground, a spike of ice protruding out of his stomach. He gasps, eyes pointed up and searching. Bright yellow eyes gaze back down at him, watching as his breath quickly slows and the life fades away.
She turns back towards the window, where the storm rages on. She easily pries it open and leaps out into the cold night.
She lands in the snow soundlessly, standing up straight. She can hear voices from out in the dark storm and she stands still, waiting.
"Oi! Tiny-One!"
"Be quiet," she snaps at the approaching Nord. He gives her a goofy grin in response, and the Argonian rolls her eyes as she trudges forward.
"Did he give you trouble? The woman screamed like a pig." The Nord began to chat animatedly about the elimination of their target.
The targets had been some Nord nobles from Western Skyrim. They owned an estate a fair distance from Solitude; fairly standard target for the Dark Brotherhood, and a rather simple one. The two assassins were able to get in and out without any issue. Surprisingly, they had little in the way of guards, and the Argonian had been able to take those out simply and out of sight with a quick spell.
"No trouble," she answers. "Ugh, it's so fucking cold. How in Oblivion do you Nords live like this?"
The long haired Nord gives a booming laugh and slaps the small Argonian on the back. She wasn't expecting it, as she jerks forward and falls into the snow.
"Oops!"
"Kor!" She sits up right away, scowling at him and shivering. He offers his hand and she begrudgingly takes it, grumbling whilst getting to her feet. She brushes off the snow, shooting him a scathing glare as she stomps forward. "Let's hurry up! I wanna get back to the inn sooner rather than later."
"And Kor thought he was impatient!" he taunts her. The Argonian leaps forward to yank on his long tresses but he manages to get out of the way.
"I'm not impatient! I just don't want to freeze to death, unlike you bloody Nords!" She chose to ignore his laughs continuing forward. "And be quiet! In case you've forgotten, we're supposed to be stealthy."
Kor shakes his head, laughing and fading into a soft chuckle. "There is no one around. We will be fine. The storm is keeping everyone away."
"Maybe we should take a hint. I wanna get back to Solitude before this shit gets any worse." Tiny-One grumbles, continuing to trudge forward through the snow, with Kor following on her heels.
----
Tiny-One and Kor slip into the city of Solitude unnoticed. The thick snow obscuring them from sight as they make their way through the city to reach the shady inn they were staying at.
Kor pushes open the creaky door and Tiny-One slips in ahead of him, leading him up the stairs and into the room they were staying in for the evening. The Argonian pulled off her hood and gave a shiver, quickly flicking a flame at the small fireplace in the room.
"Let's rest and head out in the morning," she began. "We've been fairly busy with contracts recently, so hopefully there’s something new by the time we’re back.”
The Nord snorts. "Kor thinks we deserve a break. Haven't had any time to settle "
Tiny-One scowls at her companion "Well-"
There was a tapping on the glass window of their room. Kor's hand quickly moved to the dagger at his hip and sparks began to come off Tiny-One's fingertips. There was a tapping again and a soft caw. Slowly, the two assassins began to relax. Tiny-One began walking over to the window, prying it open. A raven hops closer, before flying into the room and landing on the table. It began to peck at the table, keeping the two assassins attention on it..
Kor approached the raven while Tiny-One pulled the window closed. He removed a letter strapped to the bird's leg.
Tiny-One walked over, watching Kor's face as he scowled, thrusting the letter out at her. She let out a snort at his pout, taking the letter with one clawed hand. She scanned through the contents and let out a hum.
"Well. A new job already, and I don't have to put up with your racket this time." Tiny-One rolled the letter back up. The raven let out a caw and she reached a hand out to scratch the bird’s head. "Flying all the way here through this storm." She smiled softly.
Kor heaved a sigh. "Kor will get the next one." He reached into his bag to pull out some seeds for the needy raven. "When will you leave?"
Tiny-One took a seat in the chair. "The morning. The Matron wants me to finish this job as soon as possible. It sounds like things are getting messy in Kvatch..."
Kor nodded. "The Akatosh priests. Sounds like they are stirring up trouble. Have no worries, Kor can hold down the fort while you enjoy your contract."
Tiny-One rolled her eyes. "It's work, not a vacation, Kor. It sounds like you'll be getting plenty of fun at home dealing with that religion."
Kor snorted. "Unless they make us hide. Kor thinks we should meet them head on but the Matron might demand differently."
"Better cautious than dead," Tiny-One pointed out. She held out her hand and the raven hopped to her wrist. Standing up she returns to the window, pulling it open again. The raven hops off with a caw, flying off into the blizzard.
Kor leaned back into the chair. "Take the bed, Little Sister. Kor will keep watch for you."
Tiny-One narrowed her eyes. "You also have a big day, you know."
Kor waved her off. "Kor can take a day to relax before heading home. Kor needs to grab some gifts for Hildegard before heading home anyways."
"The Matron will not take kindly to that," Tiny-One pointed out, heading over to the bed. She sat down gently. "I do appreciate the thought though." She moved, laying curled on her side. As exhaustion slowly seeped into her bones, she closed her eyes, drifting off at last.
---
The storm had blown over by morning, the gentle light of the sunrise filtering through the window. Tiny-One sat on the edge of the bed, pulling her boots onto her feet. She stood up, grabbing a robe and pulling it over her shoulders, obscuring her face with the hood.
Across the room Kor stretched in the chair, crossing his arms. "Have a safe journey, little sister."
Tiny-One looked over at him. "Have a safe trip home, Brother." She dipped her head, opening the door and slipping out.
She exited the inn, stepping out into the sunlight; the city of Solitude was slowly coming to life. Shops began to set up, with some already dealing with business. Tiny-One remained in the shadows, slowly approaching the main gate and slipping out. She approached the stable, a tired stablehand cleaning out the manure and dirty hay before business truly began.
"Excuse me," Tiny-One began, startling the stablehand as he dropped the shovel, hastily grabbing it before spinning to look at her. She smiled at him. "I am here to pick up my mount. I left him here yesterday."
The stablehand nodded. "Uh yea, the, uh, big bay that was boarded yesterday?" He waved her in to follow him.
"That's the one." She nodded, following him. They came deeper into the stables, stopping in front of a stall. A large bay horse snorted, the horse approaching the stall door, snuffling against Tiny-One’s shoulder.
Tiny-One snorted, reaching into her satchel to pull out gold. She placed it in the stablehand's hand. "Thank you."
He nodded, slowly wandering off while Tiny-One began to tack the horse up. She guided the large gelding out of the stable and, once secured outside, she mounted the horse, and guided him out into Skyrim's wilderness. The sun continued its climb into the sky, and Tiny-One urged the horse into a steady gallop, heading further East in hope to reach Davon's Watch as quickly as possible.

Free to Good Home - Part 2
Tsiyuzi has been alone on the streets of Riften since her parents passed away. Luckily for her, some members of a local crime syndicate have hearts of gold.
I forgot to post this here, also avaible on AO3
Part 1
Brynjolf carried Yuzi into the pub, the door banging shut behind them. Several pairs of eyes turned to look at them curiously. Yuzi met all of them carefully before hiding her face.
Within the bar sat a Redguard woman, a blond Imperial, a bald man, a Nordic barkeep, a large Imperial man and, and a pair of Dunmer. They wall watched with great interest as Brynjolf continued towards the bar, setting the Khajiit down on a stool by the counter. Yuzi looked around nervously, locking eyes with the Dunmer who studied her carefully. She quickly turned away looking up at Brynjolf. He smiled, giving her a pat on the head.
"Vekel. Can I get something for the lass to eat?" He leaned on to the bar, speaking to the other Nord.
Vekel met his eyes with raised brows, shrugging his shoulders as he turned to grab some bread and cheese for her. "I assume it's going on your tab?"
Brynjolf grinned. "Aye. Thanks." He stood up and looked down at Yuzi. "You just sit here and eat, alright? I need to ask a favour of someone."
Yuzi slowly nodded watching him walk towards the blond woman. Yuzi turned back as a plate was placed in front of her. Vekel looked at her with mild interest, meeting her blue eyes. He gave her a soft smile and Yuzi slowly smiled back at him.
"Thank you for the food, sir!" She said earnestly, reaching out to eat the cheese and bread. Yuzi winced as her sore wrist twinged. She lowered her hand reaching out with the other to bring the cheese to her mouth.
Yuzi heard a curious hum from behind her but shrugged it off. She began to eat ravenously, quickly finishing the cheese and reaching for the bread.
"Slow down, kid. Food isn't going anywhere."
Yuzi lifted her head in surprise, meeting the eyes of the blond Imperial. She pulled out the stool sitting next to her. Yuzi slowly returned to munching on the bread, watching her new companion carefully.
"My name is Vex. Brynjolf tells me you're called Yuzi?" The woman smirks watching the kid nod along while eating, keeping her gaze fixed down at the food.
Vex studied the way the small Khajiit was eating. "Yuzi, is your hand bothering you?"
Pausing, the Khajiit turned to look at Vex then down at her other arm. She slowly nodded and Vex prompted her to hand her arm over. Yuzi set the food down and let Vex take hold of her arm gently, studying her wrist. The Imperial gave a hum, her brow furrowed.
Reaching into one of the pockets attached to her vest, Vex produced some ointment. Gently she rubbed Yuzi's wrist while she watched with interest, wincing slightly as the cold ointment met her skin under her fur. The woman gave a hum finally releasing her wrist.
"There. It's just a bruise but that should help the pain a bit." Vex smirked at the Khajiit who studied her wrist in wonder and then looked at Vex with a wide smile.
"Thank you!" She turned back to her food, peeking at Vex as if expecting her to step in and then began to eat again in earnest, eager to finish her meal.
By now most of the guild was watching closely, curious about the apparent stray Brynjolf adopted. Yuzi paid no mind, too focused on her first meal in days.
As she finished, Vex finally spoke again. "You smell like a skeever. Come on, let's get you cleaned up with some soap." She stood up reaching a hand out to Yuzi, who grabbed it gently, hopping off the stool. "Devlin. Don't follow us." The Imperial sent a glare towards the bald man at a far table, who rolled his eyes.
"I ain't got no interest peeping on you and the cat."
Vex sneered, "good, make it a habit." She looked to Yuzi and began to guide her back through the Cistern.
Yuzi looked back at the bar worriedly, quickly spotting Brynjolf speaking to the two Dunmer. He looked up and waved at her with a smile. Yuzi waves back, her worry not leaving her as Vex guided her out of sight.
Vex continued on taking her back to the ladder that led back to Riften. Yuzi looked at it warily and looked at the Imperial.
"Wait here." She wandered away to some of the beds, searching through a chest before producing a small satchel. She walked back over to Yuzi and gave her a nudge. "Up you go."
The Khajiit frowned looking up the ladder and then back at Vex.
"I'm not kicking you out. Now come on. You stink and need a bath like no one's business." Vex rolled her eyes, nudging her a little harder.
Yuzi shuffled forward grabbing the ladder and slowly began to haul herself up with careful steps. At the top she bonked her head and let out a whine, pushing the door she hit her head on up and open. She crawled out, dragging herself through the mud into the secret entrance.
Vex had quickly climbed after her and snorted at what she saw. "Good thing you're getting a bath since you're looking a little muddier somehow "
She reached and pulled the chain so the plate above them moved back. Taking Yuzi's hand she guided her out into the open air, slowly taking around to slip out the front gates of the city. She continued down the main road, guiding them past the farms towards a quiet, unpopulated part of the lake surrounding Riften.
Stopping on the shore, Vex set down her satchel and slowly stripped out of her clothes reaching for Yuzi. "Come now. Take your clothes off so we can get you clean."
Yuzi slowly pulled her dirty tunic and pants off, while Vex grabbed some soap and stepped into the cool water. Yuzi slowly wadded after her crouching into the water. Vex slowly began to scrub some soap on her hands and across Yuzi's face. Removing the muck and grime that had built up for the past few days.
Vex smiled softly as the grime was slowly but surely washed away. She continued rubbing soap through her hair. "You have a lot of hair you know… More than just the fur."
Yuzi blinked in surprise as Vex finished cleaning her off. "Okay dunk down to rinse. I brought some new clothes so let's change and head back. "
Yuzi nodded dunking under the water to rinse any left over soap off before following after Vex. She changed into the new clean clothes and shook her hair out. The Imperial laughed and pulled out a brush from the satchel.
"Alright. Come sit down here." Vex patted her lap as she sat on the beach. Yuzi padded over taking a seat on her lap, relaxing as Vex pulled the brush through her long, curly hair. Yuzi began to purr, fully content.
Vex smiled, brushing gently. She examined Yuzi's light flame point fur, and long brown hair with wonder. She never would've guessed that a grimey homeless kid would clean up like this.
As she finished, she took notice of Yuzi's continued purring but also the droopy eyes. She gave a snort. "Up you go kid. You still gotta walk back."
Yuzi nodded slowly, standing up and reaching for Vex's hand as she was guided back into Riften. They slipped in just as easily, making their way back to the Thieves Den with no issues.
Brynjolf was waiting for them as they descended the ladder. The two Dunmer chatted with him while he waited. He turned as Vex hopped down the ladder and snagged Yuzi as she got closer, looking like she was about to pass out and tumble down.
"Sorry, Dubhyn, Ribyna. I'll put the little one to bed. We can continue later." He nodded stepping over to Vex. He studied the orange Khajiit and smiled. "Well. Looks like someone is ready to sleep."
Yuzi gave a slow nod, reaching her arms up at Brynjolf. He blinked in surprise before smiling and scooping her up into his arms. He carried her over to one of the cots, lying her out and pulling the blanket under her chin.
Yuzi blinked up at him drowsily. "Thank you…" she mumbled, yawning and closing her eyes.
Brynjolf smiled, brushing hair off her forehead. "No need, lass." He patted her head with a firm gentle hand. "I put your things in the chest at the end of your bed okay? Sleep well."
Yuzi nodded again, barely awake anymore as she drifted out to sleep comfortably and safely for the first time in days.
Brynjolf smiled down at her, slowly rising to his feet and walking away to take care of business regarding the Guild's newest member.
