CHAPTER 1: Matcha Brownies

Bolin walked into the tea shop, Catye Café, as he usually did every friday. He opened the door to be greeted with the fresh scent of brooded Jasmine Tea and desserts. The laughs of others filled his ears, as he looked up he was greeted with his friends smiling faces, giggling about some dumb joke someone made. As he closed the door to the Café, he wiped off his feet, now walking to the table his friends were seated at. “Hey guys!” Bolin greets, gaining everyone’s attention. “Bolin!” everyone says in sync. “What’s up?” he asks as he takes the last free seat; next to his brother, Mako. Mako gives him a side glance and says “Chief is really making me work my ass off on this one case, but besides that, nothing much for me.” he finishes, now fully looking at his brother as he sighs. Bolin looks at the two girls. “How about you two?” he questions. “Nothing really, I’m still working on my Airbending with Tenzin. Apparently, I got worse.” Korra chuckles, embarrassment and frustration evident in her breath. “I’ve been trying to make some new tech for a customer, but it’s more difficult than I intended.” Asami adds, sighing deeply as she remembers she has to continue after they all leave. Bolin laughs as Pabu jumps out of his shirt, jumping to Mako. “What about you, lin?” Mako asks, trying to take Pabu off him. “Well, Nothing much. Me and opal are doing great! I took her on a date to a Pro bending match the other day.” He replies, smiling at the thought and itching his neck in a happy embarrassment. “Oh cool! How is opal?” Korra interjects, putting her elbows on the table and placing her head in her partially calloused hands. Bolin looks at her, then to the ceiling as he puts his hand on his chin. “She’s good! I think.. I mean– She’s been acting good- Oh! And–well- She got a haircut, too!” he replied nervously. Korra deadpanned and Asami and mako sigh. “Boli–” Mako was Interrupted by a loud bang that shook the shop, everyone standing up instantly, on guard.

Smoke could be seen coming from the kitchen as a young girl around their age comes out coughing with three others. “I told you to not let me use the oven!!” a girl with orange hair whines, dusting off their shirt. The first girl who walked out laughed loudly, throwing her head back. The group all sigh as they sit down and chuckle, looking at the kitchen staff. “It’s not funny! What if I blew this place up? Have fun with repairs, loser!” the other replies, crossing her arms. “Come on! It was super funny! Even the customers are laughing!” she retorts, skimming her eyes through the giggling people seated at the tables. She makes eye contact with the people from the krang table, only to quickly look back at the oranged haired girl. “Ha.ha. Hear that? That’s me, Laughing out loud. I’m dying, so funny, y/n.” she states, sighing. y/n chuckles again, making a bending stance, and thrusting forward, as she does, the smoke moves forming into several different shapes, flowers, People, Tea and her angry friend. Korra watches the girl moves as she bends the smoke, then up to the funny shapes. “y/n. I am warning you now, get rid of that smoke or I will personally drown you.” she snarls, jokingly. I think. y/n laughs, “Oh yes, im sorry Princess,” she replied sarcastically as she made the smoke disappear. The orange haired girl sighs, shaking her head. “Whatever, sweetie pookie bear pie sweaty pants, you’re an ass.” she says as she harshly turns, walking back into the kitchen. Y/n Laughs loudly and turns to the people, “Hello, uh– wonderful visitors? I apologise for the inconvenience, The smell will be taken care of shortly. Don’t trust your friends with an oven!” she says, as she chuckles and turns to the kitchen, “enjoy!” she finishes, waving.

Bolin blinks, “That was– uh– Interesting?” he says, “AND DID SHE JUST SMOKE BEND?” he yells, Mako shushes him. “I guess so, I had no idea that was even possible,” Korra replies, thinking. “So cool!” Bolin says with googly eyes. “ i Have to go talk to her!” He says as he stands up abruptly, making the chair squeal and bringing other customer eyes to him. “No, Bolin. Just sit down.” Mako sighs. Crossing his arms. “Never,” Bolin retorts, “For bending!” he yells as he walks to the kitchen. Everyone sighs.

Bolin walks to the kitchen entrance and knocks, excited. The orange haired girl walks up to him “Hello sir, Can i help you?” she asks, smiling. “Uh– Yeah! Can I talk to that smoke bender?” He asks her Grinning. The orange haired girl smirked, and crossed her arms “Of course. I’ll go get her.” she finished, now walking into the kitchen. “Thanks!” Bolin yelled, hoping she heard him. He tapped his foot on the tile as he waited. Soon, The smoke bender walked out, pushing away the orange haired girl off her and wiping her hands on her apron. “Hello , sir. How can I help you?” she asked, looking at him. “Ohhh! My gosh… Me and my friends just saw your, like, super duper cool bending! Like, I had no idea that existed!” He chimed to her waving his hands around. Y/n Laughed and said “I know! Pretty epic, right? I invented it! I can show you a few of my moves if you’d like.” she finished. Bolin’s jaw dropped so far it basically hit the tiled floor. “What?! Yes!yes! I would, like, love that!! OoohWooWeee!! This is so exciting!” he replied, shaking his hands and bouncing his legs. “Okay so like, when?” he asked. “Well, I’m free like, Now, If you want. Oh, and im Y/n.” she replied, placing her hands on her hips. “Oh! I’m Bolin. And Yes! Of course, so like, I’m gonna tell my friends, I’ll be right back!” He replied, loudly. She smiled and nodded her head with a thumbs up. Bolin walked off back to his table, a big grin on his face. Everyone looked at him suspiciously. “Guys, guess what?” he asked, squealing. “What? Don’t tell me you got a date, you cheater.” Mako replies, Bolin gasps. “I would Never! But Y/n, The smokebender, did offer to teach me her moves!” He said, shortly after he realised.. “I cant firebend though..Oh whatever! Still gonna be fun! Do you guys want to come with me?” he asked. Mako, Asami and Korra all looked at eachother, “Sure.” korra pipes, standing up. “I’ll go.” Asami says, “Me too. I guess.” Mako adds. “Great! Let’s go!” bolin leads, everyone following.

As they went to the kitchen, they saw y/n and the orange haired girl laughing. “Hey y/n!” Bolin Yells, startling them both. “Oh hey!” she says, looking to Bolin. “Is it okay if I brought my friends, and my bro?” he asked, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly. Y/n scans the group, then smiles. “Sure! More pupils the better” She says. Bolin steps aside and points at his friends, “This is Mako, My brother,” He says, pointing at a grumpy looking guy with pointy hair and golden brown eyes. “This is Asami, a smart inventor, and my friend,” He moves his hand and points to a girl, a very beautiful girl.. I guess she’s what you’d call alluring, and she had a very nice figure. “And that” he points to a girl with water tribe clothing, “is Korra, The Avatar, and my friend.” he finishes, crossing my arms. “Great!” turning around and grabbing her friend. “This is Rosa, My best friend. She’s an amazing waterbender! And My co-worker.” she says, Introducing her friend, who waves. The other group waves back. “Well, let’s go now.” She says, opening the back door. Everyone looks at each other, then starts to walk.

“Okay, so, for smokebending, it’s all in the way you breathe!” Y/n starts, taking a stance “to create smoke, you first must create Fire.” a blue Flame erupts from the palm of her hand as she moves, “and when hot meets cold,” Her friend, Rosa, comes in with water icicles, throwing them at her flame, creating smoke “It creates a chemical reaction, or as we call it. Smoke.” she says, and continues to move her body, “My flame is still here, and so is rosa’s ice, so if we take away those opponents, The smoke still remains.” She says as she rests her blue flame and Rosa collects her now melted ice. “Smoke is Not a solid,” y/n continues and she moves, “nor is it a liquid,” she says as she inhales. “Yet, it’s bendable.” She exhales and the smoke grows and goes up into the sky, only to fall right back down onto her, as she makes it vanish into her. She then poses in a well known fire bending stance. And kicks smoke. “WOO!!!” Bolin yells as he jumps. Y/n smiles sheepishly. “THAT WAS SO COOL!!” he yells. “THANKS!” she yells back smiling. Mako, asami and korra stand awkwardly. “Okay so, for now, let us start with our breathing exercises and poses.” y/n says. Walking over to bolin. She extends her front left ahead of her, “Make sure that your foot is directly underneath your Kneecap,” she states. Then she moves her back leg behind her slightly, “and make sure your back leg is under your hip as your ankle is extended outwardly.” ….

“You’re all doing, uh, Great!” she yells as everyone is trying to keep their balance. “How about this? Let’s go back to my shop, I’ll make some tea and a snack, and we’ll talk about what you all learned.” she says as she grabs her towel. “Great idea..” Bolin sighs, exhausted. Y/n laughs as she looks at everyone else. Rosa approaches, “Wow, y/n look at you. You have pupils. I’m beyond shocked.” Rosa states. “ I know right? Pretty epic.” she says as she takes off her jacket. “Alright everyone! Get off your asses! Let’s head back, kunki livers!” she finishes, walking toward her shop, Rosa close behind. “Bolin, are you sure about this?– about Her?” Korra asks, sweating. “Yeah ! of course. I mean, did you all seriously expect to learn something within only 2 hours? Plus it’s only our first time!” he says back. “Bolin. I hope you mean it’s our last time.” Mako says, standing up. “Whatever guys. I’m going to go back to the shop, and you can come or go. I don’t care! Hpm!” Bolin retorted, stomping off. Korra sighs, “she’s nice, i guess, but i don’t think any of us can smoke bend..” she finishes. “You’re right.” mako adds. “Maybe you all should just let him do what he wants to support him? He knows he can’t smokebend, but he’s interested anyways, you guys are just making him feel bad about something he likes.” Asami sharply added, storming off. Mako and Korra sigh, after sharing a sharp glance, they start to head back, too.

“Hey Bolin!” Y/n waves, and he waves back. “Where are your friends?” she questions. “Not sure. Guess they’re just slow.” he adds as he shrugs. “Oh, well too bad for them because I just popped a sweet surprise in the oven.” y/n adds, giving a toothy grin. Bolin sighs, “I’m starving! Yayy!” he says as he walks away. Y/n smiles as she waits for the rest of the group.

Tapping her foot on the tile, she bites her nail, waiting for the timer and people. The door opens and reveals the three “late bloomers”. She glanced up at them as they looked down at her. She stood up and walked into the kitchen, them following after her. Bolin was talking to Rosa, making a joke that she wasn’t laughing at. y/n puts on her apron and grabs a kitchen mitten walking to the oven, as she opens it, the smell of matcha floods the room, pleasing everyone’s noses. She walks to the stove and places it down smiling. “Okay everyone. Here is the surprise!” she says with jazz hands, smiling and blushing slightly as she sees everyone look excited. “Do you all want a piece?” She asked, hearing ‘yes’,’sure’ and ‘definitely’.

She walked over to the group with plates. “To Rosa, for being a great best friend and person.” she said as she grinned at her friend, then turned To Bolin. “To Bolin, for being my very First pupil to learn something!” she said, then turned to Asami, “To Asami for being super pretty, kind and learning something too.” she said as she winked, Asami smiled, then she turned to Mako and Korra. “To the Brother and the Avatar.” she finished. Handing out plates, and cups of Dragon Pearl Jasmine Tea. “And to me, for making these amazing 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐚 𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐬.” she finished, raising her tea cup,

“Cheers!”
