im gonna tell you something, and idk if you're ready to hear this, but im gonna say it:

you don't have to be historically accurate. you don't.

Tortuga was captured by the Spanish in 1654, but the Pirates of the Caribbean writers still used it all the time. because they didn't care about accuracy. they just wanted to write a fun story.

Detective William Murdoch certainly did not invent black light in the late 1890s, and George Crabtree is not the creator of call tracing, but once again, the writers aren't striving for accuracy. they want a good time

so you don't have to care about historical accuracy. you can do whatever the heck you want. and people might critique it but so what? what are they gonna say? that it's historically inaccurate? you already don't care.

if it's something you want, go for it. read that dozen articles on shoelaces in the 1790s. but you don't have to stress it if its not something that matters to you.

pro tip: if you want to write romance but dont think you can do it, write an already-established romance. write a married couple, or something like that. get comfortable. write the cute moments, the fluffy scenes you want to get to so badly, the ones that make you doubt your ability to build it up slowly. start in the middle. you can figure out the beginning later

i was asked nicely so i shall elaborate.

its mostly in his treatment and attitude toward lesbians. both he and mitchell clearly harbor a bias against lesbians, but cam more so. there are a few instances but the most glaring example is the time in season 11 when he said something along the lines of "i want them to feel welcome, like real gays".

you would think that being gay and understanding the treatment of the lgbtq community firsthand would lead him to be accepting of people who are quite similar to himself, but apparently not.

he invalidates lesbians and perpetuates harmful stereotypes about them shamelessly, despite preaching acceptance and open-mindedness
