Can you use diclofenac gel anywhere?
What is Diclofenac Gel, and When is it Used?
Diclofenac is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and a commonly used pain-relieving medication. It is available in different forms – gel, cream, topical solution and injection for intravenous administration. Diclofenac gel is available as an over-the-counter medication and is helpful to relieve arthritic and joint pains such as those of the knees, ankles, feet, elbows and hands. Various diclofenac-containing gels have varying percentages of the drug and are indicated for different conditions.
How Does Diclofenac Gel Work?
Like most other NSAIDs, diclofenac works on prostaglandins (a chemical substance responsible for inflammation and pain in the body). Diclofenac inhibits the production of prostaglandins and thereby relieves pain. The mechanism of action for all diclofenac products, including the gel, is the same.
How to Use Diclofenac Gel?
The diclofenac gel uses include muscle, bone or joint pains anywhere on the body. While the gel helps relieve pain when applied externally, you must exercise caution to avoid applying it on internal mucosal areas like the eyes, mouth, vagina or anus, as it can cause moderate to severe burning sensation.
Here’s how to use a topical diclofenac gel:
Always wash your hands before applying the gel.
A 1% diclofenac gel can be applied on the elbows, wrist, and hands, and a greater quantity may be required for your knees, ankle or feet.
Avoid applying the gel on dry or irritated skin and open wounds.
You must not apply this gel to infected parts of the skin or on areas with severely peeling skin.
Apply a sufficient quantity of the gel to the affected area for optimum effect.
You can apply a diclofenac gel upto four times a day, depending upon its strength. The amount of gel also depends upon the size of the area you want to treat. Avoid using the diclofenac gel over four times in a given 24-hour period.
Does Diclofenac Gel Cause Side Effects?
Topical diclofenac, including a gel, may cause side effects in some individuals. Some of these are:
Dryness, itchiness, redness or swelling on the site of application
Acne
Gas
Dizziness
Numbness or burning sensation on the arms, feet, hands or legs
In few people, topical application of the diclofenac gel may cause:
Hives
Severe itchiness
Difficulty in swallowing
Wheezing
Asthma flare-up
Key Takeaway! Diclofenac gel is a staple pain medication that is found in most homes. Due to the effectiveness of this medication, it can be used for a wide range of pains and aches. If you have been prescribed diclofenac gel, you must follow the recommended dosage. For OTC gels, read the label and follow the dosage and application instructions.

What is the fastest way to relieve neck pain?
Neck pains can be deeply uncomfortable, and they could hurt a lot. Muscle spasms or muscle pain or pain in the nerve around the neck, or just a throbbing ache could ruin your entire day. Take a look at some of the fastest neck pain relief methods.
Stretch the neck
In this era of gadgets, we mostly sit in front of them for a very long time. Hence, give your neck a little rest and relaxation a couple of times a day. If your doctor hasn't told you not to move your neck, do the following stretches:
Roll your shoulders ten times backward, then ten times forwards.
Count to ten while squeezing your shoulder blades together.
Lean back into your hands and hold that position for 30 seconds.
Ten times on each side, gently bend your ear toward your shoulder.
Use OTC pain relievers
Sometimes, people need medications to cure their pain. Over-the-counter pain relievers can soothe and cure neck pain. Taking over-the-counter medications to relieve your uncomfortable sensations while your neck recovers naturally can sometimes help. Ibuprofen, acetaminophen, and naproxen sodium are some of the most commonly prescribed OTC pain medications for neck discomfort.
Try a water pillow
Some ppl with chronic neck pain find it difficult to sleep. They wake up in the morning with more pain. You may vary the firmness of a water pillow by raising or decreasing the amount of water within. More water means a firmer pillow, whereas less water means a softer pillow.
Get a neck-supporting chair
Consider purchasing an office chair with a headrest to keep your cervical spine in a neutral position. Keep your ears over your shoulders and the back of your head against the headrest. When you have the opportunity, use the headrest on your chair and in your car. If you're working on a computer screen, make sure your eyes are level with the top third of the screen. Consider using a standing desk, which allows us to sit in a more natural position and prevents us from hunching forward.
Apply ice and heat
Neck pain can be relieved with both ice and heat, and they also help with soreness or inflammation. Begin with ice, whether it's in the form of a plastic bag filled with ice, an ice pack, or a bag of frozen peas. Because ice might cause skin irritation, cover your ice pack in a thin towel or cloth and use it for only 15 minutes at a time. Every three to four hours, apply ice to your aching neck.
If you think your neck pain is due to muscle tension, moist heat is an excellent technique to reduce it. Take a warm bath or soak in a hot tub after a hot shower. A moist heating pad can also be used for 20 minutes every few hours. Do not fall asleep doing these two things, as they could injure your skin!

What is the Best Treatment for Neck and Shoulder Pain at Home?
Neck and shoulder pain can have many causes. However, it can often be successfully treated at home. This article lists some effective exercises and home remedies to eradicate your neck and shoulder pain.
Stretching
Stretching is a great way to relax your muscles and release pain. It helps increase the muscles' flexibility and improves muscle strength scale. Moreover, stretching can reduce the lactic acid formed in the neck and shoulder muscles, which causes soreness.
Here are some basic neck stretches that you can try at home to alleviate the pain:
Side stretch of the neck: In this stretch, tilt your head sideways as much as you can and hold it in that position for 20 seconds on both sides.
Neck rotation: This is a simple neck stretching exercise for building the strength of the neck muscles in which you rotate your neck clockwise and anti-clockwise for 20 repetitions on both sides.
Shoulder stretch: In this stretching exercise, first raise your hands above your head. Bend the elbow of your left arm to bring the palm near your head. Then, using your other hand, push the elbow down steadily. Repeat this with the other arm.
Improving your posture
A significant portion of neck and shoulder pain arises due to poor posture, especially for people with desk jobs. To combat the ache, choose a chair with good lumbar support and upright. Do not slouch while sitting or standing, and perform neck and shoulder stretching exercises every hour for 5 minutes.
Cold packs
If you are suffering from an injury to the neck and shoulder, cold packs are a great way to reduce pain and improve recovery. All you need is a towel and ice. Put a few ice cubes in a hand towel and tie it in the rope shape. Next, carefully place the towel on the spot of pain at 15-minute intervals. The pain will subside in a few minutes.
Heat treatment
Tight and sore muscles are often the primary cause of pain and discomfort in the neck and shoulder. Giving these areas heat will improve the blood flow in the muscles and relax them. Increased blood circulation can also lower inflammation in the neck and shoulder area.
Try applying heat packs on the affected areas to alleviate the pain. You can buy heat packs from the market or make them at home. Add hot water to a steel bottle and roll the bottle over the affected area. Make sure the water is not too hot.
Using pain relief balms
Pain relief balms and ointments are a great tool to give immediate relief from sore and inflamed muscles. Apply the ointment or balm on the affected area two times a day, and you will get relief from neck and shoulder pain immediately.
