best-at-what-i-do:
It was always a little strange getting back into civilization, to headquarters, after being out on his own for weeks. Logan did like the balance, though. Weeks without people, then as long as he wanted with them until he got sick of them and needed to get out on his own again. Still, it always took a day or two to adjust to the noise all the other people made, the constant sounds and smell emanating from everywhere that weren’t just nature or a group of parademons. Not that those damn things were particularly quiet, but there were long stretches of it when he was out in No Man’s Land, at least. The clack of Bobby’s fingers on the calculator seemed particularly loud to him as he walked into the room, though he’d been looking for him anyway. Logan liked making the rounds when he was back, check in on everyone. Bobby hadn’t really been doing well, stuck in his ice form, but at least he was out of now. Maybe things were getting better. There was a particular scent about him that Logan was very curious about though he may or may not bring it up immediately.
“Hey. Looks like ya came outta yer shell fer a bit.” Which was not only to say that he noticed but that he approved. He didn’t blame the kid, war was hard to cope with and this was basically Bobby’s full scale one. Retreating behind a mask and trying not to feel didn’t do anyone any good in the long run, though, Logan knew that from experience. Glancing at the spreadsheet on the computer he wrinkled his nose. “Crunchin’ numbers? They ain’t got anythin’ better fer you ta do?” Then again, maybe Bobby liked this. Logan would rather stab himself repeatedly with his own claws than do this kind of thing but each to their own.
“I guess ya might need somethin’ boring after who you been around.” It seemed casual but was pretty pointed, actually. Sure, he was a grown man and could do what he wanted, but Logan was damn curious as to why Bobby had been around Akihiro especially when Logan knew his son was not part of the war effort.

“Oh uhh... yea. I guess so.” he smiled slightly. Even if he was doing a little better with... whatever his problem was (Bobby was sure there was a professional word for it but he didn’t wanna acknowledge it). “I’ve still got some golems patrolling the outskirts of the city. They’ll engage anything that looks suspicious and I check in every hour.” He just turned his head to ice to help make that connection, check in and then he forced himself to back out. It was still pretty tempting to hide himself in his ice but he was trying not to give into the urge so much anymore. In battle it’d be different but he had to keep telling himself it wouldn’t do him any good when he was in Genosha. “So, for now I guess I’m just putting all the accounts in order. No one else here to keep up with it and you’d be amazed how many things you can deduct under ‘heroic expenses.’ We got all those practice targets tax free.” he said with a small chuckle.
“You mean Anna, or Remy?” he asked, tilting his head and blinking a few times, “I mean I guess you could say that. Those two can be a handful, especially when they’re around each other.” But after everything he’d pulled he was doing his best to, well... not avoid but not go out of his way to interact. He didn’t wanna overstay company or anything. Maybe that was why he kept heading to New York so often and-
Bobby’s fingers froze mid type and he looked over at Logan again. No... He couldn’t tell, and even if he could- “So, how long do you think you’ll be back in Genosha?” he asked, trying to change the subject, “Anna’ll be glad to see you. And we could all use your help for whatever crisis comes next.”

Steve looked at Bobby, the words just a little bit heartbreaking. They had only met a few times before this, but Steve had always thought he had a good heart and a big smile. It was a shame to see it gone now. He supposed that, as much as he tried, he couldn’t curtail the effects of war. He couldn’t change what it made them into. He only wished that it wouldn’t eat people like Bobby Drake alive.
“Well… what do you want to be comin’ outta all this?” Maybe that was the way to phrase it. Help him see that at the end they were going to have a choice. They could choose who they were and what they wanted to be. It was difficult sometimes, and sometimes you had to fight a helluva lot and hit a lucky stride. But they could still choose.

Bobby let out a deep sigh through his nose and closed his eyes for a moment. “I dunno.” he said quietly, “Happy I guess.” He just wasn’t sure how to go about getting that. He might’ve been on track once but he was pretty sure keeping the world from being overthrown came before him trying to keep the warm fuzzies up inside. It would be the height of selfish to put Bobby Drake before the world.
“I spent so long convincing myself I was happy when I wasn’t that I... I dunno.” he trailed off, opening his eyes but looking down again. He wasn’t good at talking about this kind of stuff, he never had been, there was a reason he’d kept people going with jokes and banter back in the day; they’d been easy to just throw out.

“ – You got a light?”
Someway, somehow, she’d found herself unprepared. It was a rarity for the likes of Rose Wilson, considering she could literally see bits and pieces of the fucking future, but y’know, why would that warn her when her lighter was going to run out? She was annoyed, clear in tone and expression, but she supposed someone around would have to have a lighter, or she’d go buy one. Also annoying, considering she had loads back at her apartment, but that hardly helped her now.

Bobby could’ve laughed at the irony of the question; him of all people whipping up a fire. “Not on me, no.” he said after a moment. He wasn’t in iceform, he was trying not to rely on it so much after what happened on their last mission, he thought for a moment and then stood up. Approaching the young woman he lifted his hands and turned them to ice, sharpening them at the corners. With a swift movement he scraped the sharp edges together, enough to generate some sparks to fall onto the end of the cigarette, “That’s the best I got.” He sighed.
As with most things, he best wasn’t up to snuff these days.

When: Present Day Where: Geosha - Resistance Headquarters With: Logan @best-at-what-i-do
Bobby was doing his best not to mope about in his ice form so much these days. He knew it wasn’t helping but the temptation was still there... And he really didn’t wanna talk about it. He was getting out more though, visiting New York (again, he didn’t wanna talk about why) so his friends seemed a little less worried about him. That didn’t mean he was gonna slack off any, there were other things he could do help.
After all, to his knowledge, he was the only Chartered Certified Accountant in the joint and even during a war for the entire planet everything from guns to food cost money and every penny needed accounting for somewhere. And really, who better than him for the job? Oddly enough it was proving relaxing, going over the numbers, finding what they could deduct, where they could save, what those savings were best used for to make the most of it. There was something almost cathartic to be doing a job he could do that helped which wasn’t watching the horizon for the next parademon.
He’d have to ask Anna-Marie if she could put in a good word to let him do this more often rather than outsourcing the work. His fingers were typing away swiftly at a calculator while he worked on a computerised spreadsheet. So much so he didn’t notice Logan was there till the big guy was standing all but in front of him.
He looked up and blinked several times. “Hey Logan.” The greeting was quiet but at least had some personality to it, plus he even smiled a little. Clearing accounting was the answer to all life’s problems.

She was about to snap at him him regarding the ice, and she was glad that it melted away. Because she wasn’t going to have a serious conversation with him while her side ached from the tear in her skin and the expressionless eyes he was using to hide were the ones that looked at her. However, he seemed to sense that of his own accord. Good. So they weren’t completely lost.
As he seemed to well up, Anna’s anger broke. She couldn’t keep it when he was looking at her like that. Bobby was family. She reached out to catch his wrist with gloved hands, pulling it down. “Stop it, sugah. Yer gonna hurt yerself. C’mere.”
Leading him into the room, Anna was quick to deposit Bobby onto the bed she shared with Remy, wincing at the pain in her side. If only Logan was here and she could just borrow that healing factor, it would be fine already.
“I’ve taken a lot worse’n this, Bobby,” she told him as she positioned herself next to him. “An’ of course I know ya didn’t mean ta. Ya think I’m here believin’ ya’d wanna hurt me?” She shook her head, catching his chin. “Get that right outta yer head.”
-
He was trying and maybe that made him the biggest fool of all. Every time he tried he hadn’t got anywhere, not really. It only gave him unjustified confidence and led to more trouble down the line. Look at what he’d done with the Death Seed, look at what he’d done to Anna. He was a walking-talking mess who was probably only gonna cause more harm then good. But still he tried.
“”ve already hurt you. S’only fair.” he said, voice thick with repressed emotion. It wouldn’t be the first time he’d broken down in front of her but he was supposed to be better than this now. For fucks sakes teenagers were more together than him!
Not fighting back, he let her tug him into the room and half-collapsed onto her bed. “S’not the point.” he looked at her only because she lifted his head, his eyes misty though no tears spilled over.
“I did hurt you. I keep messing up! I wanna be what people need. We need soldiers who can go out there and fight and can’t even hit the right side.” he shook his head, wanting to be small, hidden. His shoulders were up to his chin and he looked down again. “I’m getting everything wrong again.”

The words had Steve tensing. He didn’t want to snap back about it, even if he very much felt Bobby hadn’t even given him a chance. Bucky had had the hardest life that Steve could imagine, and he didn’t think that any of this was easy for anyone. However, he was aware that he was putting Bucky right back in another war he didn’t choose to fight. Still, he also needed to put his heart out for all of the team. He couldn’t play the favorites of his knee-jerk reactions.
“We don’t all have to like each other. I am well aware of the tensions we all have. It’s all steeped in history that we can’t get away from.” Steve wasn’t asking them all to forget where they had come from. God knew that he didn’t forget in his own right. “All I am asking is that we treat each other with respect.” He didn’t think that was too much of an expectation to place on them all. “We have to beat this thing back, you know? But I keep saying, Bobby, we don’t have to forget anything about who we are.”
Tumblr media

Bobby looked down at his hands, the temperature of the space around them dropping a little more. Who he was was something of a touchy subject. Bobby was sure it was the case for all mutants to some degree; being born as something a large portion of humanity thought was evil or monstrous. But for him it went so much deeper. He’d struggled for decades to actually figure out who he was, liking himself still wasn’t there completely and now in a war? Who he was couldn’t even be dealt with.
“Hmm.” He made a quiet sound, throat closing up as it always had when serious conversations were happening. “Don’t think I knew who I was even before all this started.” But Bobby Drake had never been a soldier. He’d been a goofball. Someone who couldn’t do what was needed to keep friends and... allies, alive. And even after trying to become that he hadn’t done any better. He’d just made things worse. So where the hell did that leave him?

There was no need to take in the other’s scent to know it was him. Akihiro didn’t look at Bobby as the bartender approached the ice mutant to present him with another drink. A quiet sigh fell past his lips, mumbling a curse while scrolling through the contents on his phone.
Akihiro’s free hand adjusted part of his black-leather vest. The cool air by the bar brushed back the small beads of sweat on the surface of his bare abdomen. He set his phone down for a moment, outstretching his arms with a slight groan, allowing for a partial view underneath the partially opened vest.
A few feet away, in the other room, he could smell the anticipation of his client, eliciting a slight smirk on his end. A low chuckle slipped past his lips. He rested a loose knuckle underneath his chin.
“Nothing ever excites you and yet, you’re still booking clients every night,” said the bartender after passing a few extra napkins towards Bobby. The Barcadi was still in his other hand while he approached Akihiro.
“Lucky me,” he snorted. “Not one of them has satisfied me. They could see me a million times and they still don’t know what I want.”
-
The evening was going to drag. Every minute he had to listen to Daken making smalltalk with the damn bartender he felt a little more of his patience slip away. Though not at the server, nor even at his former enemy... It was all directed at himself.
He had no business here. He was supposed to be, well, in truth he wasn’t sure. He didn’t trust himself to conduct usual business in Genosha after their last mission. And he worried that if he patrolled alone he’d fall into his ice form and everything would start spiralling back towards the person who’d attacked a teammate without thinking.
So what else was there to do? Sitting here, nursing beers around a man who’s relationship to himself could be described as ‘complex’ to put it mildly, wasn’t smart. But it was better than anything else.
He took another small sip and stared into the froth like it could hold all the answers in the world. Maybe this was why Logan hung out at bars so often, it was the best of no choices.
“Pfft.” he let out the small noise when Daken went on about how his clients didn’t satisfy him. Poor thing not getting fucked how he liked.

voleur-de-coeurs:
Remy did not want to give off the impression that he did not care about their situation, but neither did he want to lose hope. Being able to have a laugh in dark times was important too, to help them all cope and keep things together. He was treating their fight with the utmost importance, but Bobby seemed to be focusing on it even more. “I know it’s hard t’ be light in times like dis, oui, but we can’t lose hope either. I wanna still see myself when I look in de mirror, not somebody who’s only t'inkin’ ‘bout de fight. I jus’ want de same for you, ami.”
Yes, Bobby had a point about that. After all, he was keeping constant watch on their headquarters, something Remy was not doing. But he could not believe that Bobby could not even crack a joke for a moment. “We might, but keepin’ us safe ain’t all on you either. I gotta t'ink you could spare a minute for a chuckle or two.” Bobby was never bad company. Even if he was overly focused, he was still a friend. “No you ain’t. Don’ worry. I wouldn’t ever not wanna be 'round my friends.” Especially when they were saying things like not having had fun for months. “Non, dat’s not righ’. Come on homme, we gotta still be able t’ have some fun. If we can’t, den…” He sighed and shook his head. “…den what’s left t’ fight for? We can’t lose alla ourselves t’ de war.”
Tumblr media
-
Bobby shook his head a little, “It’s too hard... Remy.” he said quietly, “I was always happy, I was meant to be okay. That was my thing.” Scott, Jean, Warren, even Hank, they all experienced their fair share of traumas far younger then they should have; Bobby was so busy trying to help them he never paid any mind to his own. Now he was trying to help everyone but spread this thing there was nothing left for him. Not even enough to muster up a smile or a joke when they’d used to come so easily. It scared. But Apokolips scared him more.
“I used to think that...” But war didn’t have a damn schedule and what if the moment he took to try and laugh was when out in the distance soldiers descended and another refugee settlement was destroyed? Or a full scale assault was begun and he didn’t give everyone the advanced warning they needed? He lifted his heavy head to look over at Remy; the Cajun wasn’t the first to tell him that, that he needed to keep himself. But... “What am I worth compared to the rest of the world? The rest of the people here?” If he lost himself but they had something to rebuild when it was over, wasn’t that enough? He couldn’t be himself and the best soldier the war needed, it was too hard. Something had to give.

Anna Marie never shied away from a fight, and she always threw herself into them at full steam if she could manage it. She only expected that others would do the same. Still, when she was fighting alongside her allies, she didn’t expect that damage would come from the wrong side. She didn’t expect that she’d turn in time to see Bobby fire off ice missiles at her. Thankfully, she was fast enough to avoid the worst of it, though her side was completely torn up and there was no one here with a healing factor that she could gently borrow. So she’d have to heal it up the old fashioned way.
She supposed maybe she should have seen it coming, given how the two of them had argued before. Still, when she opened the door to find Bobby looking at her behind those icy eyes instead of his own, she was half tempted to close the door in his face. She didn’t, because she cared about Bobby and loved him like a brother. But she did narrow her eyes as he spoke.
“Depends on what ya came here ta talk ‘bout,” she told him plainly.
-
He knew well enough to read Anna’s mood by her tone. He was in trouble. He deserved to be. But that never made dealing with it any easier; especially considering what he’d done. “I wanna say I’m sorry.” he mumbled, gaze downwards, shoulder’s hunched. “For what happened... What I did.” his hands came together and he started to wring his fingers so hard it was almost as though the icy digits were about to crack and snap off. “I didn’t want to- I didn’t mean for...” he tried to continue but it was so hard. Ice couldn’t bend, it would only snap.
He let out a shaky breath and the ice began to retreat, vanishing from his body to be replaced with pale skin, dark hair and blue eyes that were already misting over. His next breath was ragged, like everything hitting at once, hitting harder, he struggled to swallow but words finally came. “I didn’t mean t-to. I was so scared when I realised what I did. I’ve been trying so hard to be better and I’m only making things worse.”
He sniffed and a hand came up to grip around his eyes in a bruising grip, “Please tell me you’re gonna be okay.” he whispered, voice tight with still repressed emotion.

Steve had noted that there was something wrong with Bobby. He may not be Scott Summers, but he did have the capacity to realize that something was wrong. People had been noting how much Bobby stayed in his ice form, so it was good to see him wearing a different face. Still, he noted the white knuckled grip on the railing and the tone of his voice before shaking his head.
“Then I guess we have some overlap,” he said simply. “Hope that’s alright with you.” The knowledge of what had happened with Bucky dogged Steve, but he didn’t let the rest of the team fall by the wayside because of it.

He didn’t reply to Steve, in truth Bobby wasn’t sure what to say. He couldn’t keep his tone as even as liked without frozen vocal chords, but without ice to bury into a great deal of repressed feeling were making themselves very much known. Plus, keeping quiet had never been his strong suit; physically or verbally. He didn’t turn away or release his grip, but he did finally speak. “I don’t like Sergeant Barnes.”
Probably not the best start... “But I’m sorry for how I acted around him.” Bobby said quietly, sniffing before his tongue darted out to quickly wet his lips. “It’s easier to be hard when everything’s frozen.”

When: Post Libertas Event Where: Genosha - Outside Anna’s Room With: Anna-Marie @deadliest-touch
It was over. The Apokolips forces had been held off long enough for the other teams to finish their mission. They’d won, in so much as they could in those kind of confrontations. He should be happy. But he was anything but. He hadn’t said a word on the ride back nor during the debrief. He’d kept quiet and waited for Anna to report how her injury, which could’ve been so much worse was caused by him attacking without thinking, completely lost in the battle. Even if she’d been able to avoid the worst of it, he hadn’t known she’d be able to. Hadn’t thought. Stupid. Stupid, stupid worthless idiot.
He was failing once again.
But, she didn’t. The meeting finished and they all dispersed, exhausted and in need of sleep. Bobby didn’t go to his room though, he waited an hour then went to Anna’s, still in ice form, and knocked on the door. When she answered Bobby would only meet her gaze for a moment before it dropped.
“Can we talk?” he asked quietly, “Please.”

Jean knew Bobby was coming, and what he wanted to talk about, before he entered her room. She was meditating on her bed, and was levitating slightly as she worked on her mental shields. It was always important to maintain them, one never knew when something might break through, and the recent battle had assured her that while she’d survived, she would have to keep working to deal with whatever Darkseid sent their way next. When Bobby came in, she didn’t open her eyes, but gestured for him to sit on the bed or the chair. Slowly descending, she crossed her legs and stretched, giving herself a chance to prepare. “You know I already know what you want to talk about, but I would still like to hear you say it.”
Tumblr media
-
He wasn’t surprised to see Jean like this, she’d been much the same many times when he’d poked his head in to bother her back in their school days; they felt like a lifetime ago now. They were different people in a different world and Bobby wishes so badly things could go back to being that simple; when Magneto and the Brotherhood seemed like the world’s biggest threats. He licked his lips, a nervous habit since his ice-body didn’t need the moisture and sat stiffly in the chair, still avoiding eye contact. He’d always been awful at serious conversations, even now when he was so dour. “I lost control during the mission.” he said quietly, “And I... I put you in danger. I didn’t- I wasn’t supposed to... I’m sorry.” His head hung low, “Jean, I’m scared.”

The scent of a familiar face was nothing new to him. Though the temptation to delve into what the other was feeling lingered, he simply walked past without blinking. By the time he reached the counter at the bar, he presented his client’s credit card and asked for ‘the usual.’
“Having fun in there?” teased the bartender, reaching for the bottle of Barcadi from his middle shelves.
Akihiro’s nonchalant hum coaxed his aforementioned colleague to click his tongue. His gaze flickered towards the familiar face within his sightlines for a split second before turning away. A hand pillowed against his cheek with a slight huff.
“He’s a usual client,’ he said. “Nothing about him excites me as much, but he tips well. I’ll take what I can get.”
-
He didn’t know if it was because he was determined not to be alone with his worrisome thoughts or if this was just that sorta bar, but he was hearing an awful lot of personal business from people; especially ones talking to the bartender.
Just like Daken was right now. His eyes flicked down to the beer in his hand, the head still as bubbly as when it arrived and chilled to perfection.
Clients. He knew exactly what they were talking about; and his mind, like it so often was lately, immediately supplied several vivd and explicit images as to what sort of things someone in Daken’s profession got up to with these clients.
He raised the glass to his lips and threw it back, gulping down till the glass was empty. “Another. Please.” he mumbled to the bar tender, gently nudging the glass forward.

“The Death Seed was different. Scott took the Phoenix willingly and then used it to murder Charles.” After what happened with the Phoenix, Anna Marie wasn’t Scott’s biggest fan. He was never going to be her favorite person, and she knew that. Anna Marie had gotten up in Scott’s face a hundred times. She’d always been more of Logan’s girl than anything. Bobby had a special love for Scott, but Scott had fucked up. He wasn’t someone that was the basis for comparison.
Her temper flared as he spoke, making a clear jab at her cooking before jerking away from her. Anna Marie had always had a powerful temper, a regular firecracker. “Fine. But when you shut us all out, don’t be so sure we’re gonna be waitin’ on the other side. Dyin’ could be around the corner, an’ if you need to shut yourself off ‘cause yer too yella to feel what needs to be felt, that’s yer problem.”
Turning back to the stove, she let out a string of colorful language as she noticed she had burnt the grits.

Bobby looked down but didn’t say anything. People talked about how mother’s could overlook their child’s biggest flaws out of love; he wondered if he had that kinda issue when it came to Scott. He’d messed up, but they’d all messed up. Most of them had killed. Scott had killed one person. Bobby had murdered thousands; yet apparently their leader had more reason to hang his head in shame. It made no sense. He was the failure. He was the one who hadn’t done enough... so many times.
Anna, for all her brains and other admirable qualities, had always had a temper that was easy to stoke, and he’d known it would get him an out; better to have her angry with him and ready for a fight than trying to hold his hand while Parademons came to stab them in the back. He’d iced up the second their grip was broken and almost sighed as everything became a little duller. A little easier to handle.
“See you around, Anna.” he mumbled under her curses, leaving an icy trail in his wake as he walked out of the room.

There was something going on with Iceman - Michael could see it. He wasn’t so grossly self absorbed, not how people assumed him to be. He could tell when people were hurting. It was why he was hesitant to head to the watchtower that shift - Bobby would be there. Michael liked the guy, sure, and he wished he could help in some way but the truth was a little nervous. It wouldn’t take Bobby much to rid himself of Michael.
He steeled himself as he ascended the stairs leading to the top, greeted only with terse words when he finally reached the top. Michael inhaled deeply and cracked a smile. “Oh, I know. They figured I could head on up anyway since I was here and ready. Plus, I thought you could use some company? And don’t worry, I’ll try to be as quiet as possible.”
-
The most recent confrontation had been an unwelcome eye-opener to Bobby; the way he’d gone for Jean... he knew that blow could’ve been lethal if her shield hadn’t been up. By rights she could’ve told Scott or one of the other two leaders about it and got him at least taken off active duty. Probably thrown into Samson’s office too or something even worse. And the fear just made him want to hide in ice even more.
“You don’t.” his words cut off and his grip on the bannister went hard, it was so easy, so tempting to just bring the ice out and make everything cold and quiet. The bannister was already frozen under his tough. “You don’t have to be quiet.” he eventually mumbled, “It’s fine.” There, he was talking and making an effort.

Within the bar, the back corner crescendoed with a few suggestive hums and giggles. The man glanced over at the alluring mutant in his drunken stupor. He managed to muster a half smile the moment he felt the other’s lips upturn into a grin.
“Fuck you’re so hot,” he murmured under his breath.
Akihiro chuckled at the man’s obviously pleasant affirmation. He leaned over the man’s clothed shoulder, kissing it softly before pulling back.
“Will you be good while I fetch us more drinks from the bar?”
Instead of a verbal answer, Akihiro earned a weakened thumbs up gesture. He used that as his excuse to close the door behind him and make his way towards the bar.
-
Why the fuck was he even here? Bobby had asked himself that question many times but still he didn’t move. After the mission to stave off the Apokolips forces he knew he’d been too far gone. He’d attacked Jean! He could’ve really hurt her.
The war was making him a monster and he was terrified.
So he hid. He left Genosha, forced himself to defrost and holed up in the bar Daken worked, unable to think of anywhere else to go.
The man himself was here and their eyes had met more than once so far.
But he didn’t speak. He hadn’t said a word to anyone save ordered a beer that even now was still chilled to perfection. He couldn’t bring himself to drink; his stomach swirled so much he worried it would just come right back up again.
