✧ ⎯ 〝 The headcanon in which Olivier's disdain towards Roy is because of what he has and not because of what he wishes to be.. it tickled my brain.
✧ ⎯ 〝 The privilege of riches never compares to the ability for emotions; never close to the intimacy of close family, to the freedom of vulnerable expression without perpetually having yourself tugged into doubt and embarrassment. The ability, facility, the strength, to be free in all aspects.
✧ ⎯ 〝 Not uncommon are the moments where the 'strongest' begin to insult and undermine what they believe is 'weak', but that might just be a reflection of their deepest desires.
✧ ⎯ 〝 The suppressed admiration is eternally humiliating.
It's very hard to write a character who in most of the series is either silent, intelligent, or downright rude.
(My opinion is mine alone, you can choose to agree or disagree. Everyone's perception of a character is perfectly valid.)
Something I see a lot when people write Olivier is the fact they tend to pay no mind to the regal, intense elegance she seems to carry everywhere; it's replaced with this sudden burst of anger and 'masculine' energy and.. somewhat basic-anime-tsundere-ish vibes that end with a lot of uninteresting threats. (Instead of making her intimidating with wide vocabulary and nonchalant, perhaps grumpy nature.. she seems funny, her demeanor hard to take seriously because she is perpetually stuck using insults and threats to get her way.) She is very loud, a woman-child at some points. I don't like that.
I think of her as a woman who's prone to outbursts, but she doesn't just blow up at any new recruit or minor inconvenience. (Seen as how she handled Raven compared to her brother. She was always controlled, always calculating- and there was constantly a plan B.. going as far as to pretend to be a flirt, to be easy in order to get her way. With Alex, Olivier just threw him around for a while, insulted him for a lil yet her reasoning for lashing out would later help the squadron make camp and prepare for later. You get what I'm sayin'?) It's easier to respect and fear a person who's in control of their emotions and reactions, instead of someone who solely relies on threats and violence. (These two become a usual and boring, sometimes even annoying for the people who NEED to rely on you always have to deal with you. Controlled energy followed by the intelligent nature of a leader is so much scarier, it's worth being scared of. )
One of the earliest depictions of headcanons I personally dislike is Olivier hating dresses, skirts, pink etc etc.
It feels like we're just pushing her deeper into the 'girlboss' trope, you know?
Strong female characters don't need to be against stereotypically feminine things in order to have substance as a powerful leader, or as someone who defies gender norms as a whole.
I keep being so persistent with this everywhere-- but it's the truth. Olivier's way of sitting, her first name, her tone of voice, her intelligence; this doesn't make her any less of a woman, this doesn't mean her affiliation with femininity has to be tainted or discarded. She holds her beauty, her looks and gender as a mark of her pride and never runs from it. She embraces it, she's a symbol of how the mold of strength doesn't need to be made by a man, or by someone with unrealistic feats of physical strength.
I feel like one of my artistic pet peeves is when people draw fanart and remove key aspects of a character- and then say it just doesnt fit their artstyle or general aesthetic.
Kind of like drawing Olivier and then making her lips super thin, drawing Annie and excluding her nose shape, drawing Balalaika and thinning out her scars.. etc etc.
I obviously understand some people just can't draw these things, but it bothers me when things that aren't stereotypically 'pretty' are not worked upon/practiced solely because the male gaze wouldn't 'approve'.
i think it’s hilarious how one of the translations of what Olivier tells her troops and workers after murdering Raven is “continue working as if nothing happened!”
like damn,,,, she really told everyone to ignore the murder she just committed and everyone OBLIGED huh,,,,,
Oh, we’re beyond anger now. We’re in loathing town, population many. Olivier is gonna to raze the men who assisted the man who killed her Captain. She’s going to run them through one by one. And she’ll look them in the eye and explain to them in cold, dark detail how they’ve failed their country, their men-and how no one’s gonna mourn them once she’s through.
I would also like to add the fact she's generally designed femininely. Olivier has a big head of blonde hair, big lips clearly painted with lipstick, and a womanly shape -more developed/joked about in the manga. I usually see how stereotypical masculine/strong women are always given 'masculine' or intense designs - but she's got a relatively pretty one. I theorize it's because Olivier as a person isn't afraid of her gender, she doesn't NEED to look like a man in order to demand upmost respect from her comrades(but I wouldn't say she strives to act like one either.) She's a beautiful woman who's intense and strong, who's attitude is enough to silence a whole room.
(Of course, armstrong genes are a big part of her, but not once does she seem ashamed to be one; she relishes in her family's honor- albeit much more subtly than Alex.)
I definitely agree with all you've said here, couldn't have said it better. Thank you for your time. 🖤
Give me a fullmetal character to over analyze please I’m begging you
