6 Anime Re-heat Your Mid Year Feeling This July/August 2022
Tumblr media
There's no better way to kick off the summer season than by watching some of your favorite anime! Whether you're looking for something light and anime-centric to watch on a hot day, or something with a bit more substance to keep you entertained all summer long, these seven shows are sure to do the trick this month.
And since we already covered some July anime here, there are still some left at the end of July that we will put here as a nice transition between those two months!
July 24th: Saikin Yatotta Maid ga Ayashii
With a later appearance in July we have a Manga adaptation that many waited for.
The English title of this anime is The Maid I hired recently is Mysteriou, and tells us already a lot about what we can expect from this anime.
Yuuri is a young master whose father recently hired a maid without his knowledge or consent. When the beautiful Maid Lilith arrives at his mansion Yuuri is not only surprised but overly suspicious of the mysterious beauty that steps in.
A natural skeptical approach from Yuuri’s side lets him overthink and analyze every perfect move she makes and doesn’t trust neither her nor his father.
With a constant feeling of a scheme being planned behind his back, he keeps his eye on her to make sure the mysterious maid won’t confirm his bad feeling.
On the other hand Lilith grows fond of the young master and tries her best to overcome the obstacle of his first impression in order to get closer to him…
youtube
July 28th: BanG Dream! Morfonication
This short special consists of only 2 Episodes.
Those two episodes focus on the Violin Rock Band Morfonica from the BanG Dream series.
It plays in the summer vacation of the band and their excitement for many planned live performances they had in mind.
Yet there is something strange arranged behind the others back by one member leading to a certain reunion that was not expected.
There isn’t much revealed about the plot, but since the trailer is short, matching the length of the special, we will just have to wait for the beautiful scenery to finally hit us completely.
youtube
Aug 1st: Fuuto Tantei
Fuuto Tantei immediately makes you think that despite the stunning animation and art style this anime kind of has an old vibe, matching more of one of the retro anime from back then.
This is no surprise when we get to know that this is a sequel of the Kamen Rider W anime from 2009.
The plot takes place in Fuuto City, where so-called “Gaia Memories”, are used by criminals to gain supernatural powers transforming them into monsters, in order to wreak havoc.
A self-proclaimed detective, Shoutarou Hidai and his intelligent partner Phillip, they also use those powers for good. They transform into the city’s legendary hero Kamen Rider W and get to the bottom of the crimes.
Those who hurt Fuuto City are promised to pay up for their crimes in the name of justice, by a detective and his partner!
A heart-racing game of justice and evil, giving many people the long-awaited continuation of their nostalgic childhood.
youtube
Aug 4th: Yoru wa Neko to Issho
With Action-filled crime scenes and heart-racing dreams this anime is a little bit more on the cozy and calmer side.
A series to enjoy when it’s time to wind-down and just silently watch heart-warming cat and owner daily activities unfold.
This cute comedy revolves around Fuuta who just wants to spend some time with his cat after coming home from an exhausting and tiresome day.
Yet cats tend to be a little bit on the mysterious side and are unpredictable at times, it’s hard to fully reproduce them but it shows how much we care about our fluffy furball.
Just like Fuuta and his little furball that will give us a little laugh this August.
youtube
Aug 8th: Nanashi Kaidan
Since August is also often used in time-loop and horror stories we cannot rule out the possibility of another little scare this season.
Nanashi Kaidan also meaning Nameless Horror stories is an up-coming short-series consisting of 10 Episodes that will air.
The Episodes will air every day from August 8th to August 19th, each episode depicting the uneasy feeling of fear and sensing something out there, which children usually feel.
Character designs of the three revealed ones are very interesting and each have 2 versions.
Yet there is not much more revealed, nor a trailer that could give away anything about the series.
Aug 19th: D4DJ Double Mix
The last one on our list is an anime special Episode of the D4DJ series.
It revolves around the story of Merm4id and Rondo, two DJ groups who are supposed to have a joint performance together.
There is not much information beside that, but for the people who already enjoyed the game and the first season of the anime will rejoice in another special episode covering those two groups.
youtube
Despite the fact that summer is reaching an end, this year is not over yet.
The end of July and August are still filled with heated anime series to enjoy, to make you feel the spark and motivation that may have decreased compared to spring.
And still we are wondering what will unfold this Fall season of 2022 as well?
Let’s find it out when the time comes and reach another heart thumping season together!

Rengoku Kyojuro - the blazing heart of the hashira
Tumblr media
In today’s Character talk Rengoku Kyojuro will be our very guest to analyze. Not only is he full of passion, one of a kind you do not see often.
But also the blazing heart of the hashira who didn’t fill us only with great joy and laughter, but also a heavy burden.
The flame that lights the way but also darkens all around when gone.
The man sets the hearts ablaze, we shall look into the Flame Hashira’s character and learn a little bit more of how much he impacted the series.
Which means, this post will contain major spoilers for both the anime and movie.
Introduction
Rengoku with his hair looking like blazing flames and eyes burning with passion fits the title of the Flame Hashira very well even appearance-wise.
A loud and firm voice that cannot be overheard.
Tall and well-built he strolls and patrols in order to guarantee the safety of many.
No wonder that he is not only keen but wanted for the role of a big brother, aside from being a genuine big brother to his real one.
With a short appearance in the first season towards the end of Episode 21 there was not much to see of the energetic and justice-driven young man.
Still with the release of the Mugen Train movie, Rengoku shortly after conquered the audience's hearts as well as the rest of the movie’s cast, living up to his title until the very end.
Fire and flame, optimistic and enthusiastic until his justice’s flame extinguished with a final smile.
The Character
Since Rengoku isn’t seen as much at first in the anime the first impression he gives off is rather strict and we immediately get to see how much he values his own morals. In the bat of an eye he rejects Nezuko simply because she is a demon and cannot let slip any other argument that could prove him wrong.
That is until he saw with his own eyes how Nezuko protected humans, risking her own life in the Mugen Train movie, which is also the only reason he made an exception to change his rather biased first impression of her. The ones fitting his morales and values are openly accepted, making him even clingy and overbearing once he sets his eyes on someone he sees worthy of his attention.
No wonder that he enthusiastically suggests Tanjiro to become his apprentice, despite Tanjiro not reacting too positively on that Rengoku already sat his heart and mind to it, to train the young Kamado into someone he sees great potential in.
Even when seen as an idealistic and almost pushy young man, Rengoku is quick-witted and uses his techniques wisely in battle, making him not only confident in his skills but also a reliable ally who knows how to stand against an opponent as well as being passionate about every action he proceeds to do.
Like his hair and eyes, flames fill not only his character theme but also the passion and justice that linger deep inside Rengoku. From a firm and loud way of speaking to the way he eats, every action is filled with energy and optimism.
A pure heart filled with the strong will of a great man, yet with the curiosity and hope of a child that made him not only care deeply for his brother until his very death, but also for the young Demon Slayer Corps member he already embraced as his apprentices, with a little dream that they might have called him aniki (big brother) one day.
The duality of strict morals and a big heart like the beautiful yet scorching flames
Core role as a character
Rengoku did not only wield the title of the Flame Hashira, but had many other roles that might or might not have been noticed by some.
Since the Hashira are overall eccentric characters, Rengoku is still one of the few who showed consistency in his pure hearted intentions of wanting to save the weak in every occasion and strictly following the rules, making home the most justice-oriented of the ton and giving him a bit of the playing straight man role.
We also see that in many other occasions of the Mugen Train movie and the Mugen Train anime arc in which he is easily irritated or not welcoming the idea that clashes with the usual norm.
Still overall his heart seems to be touched easily when he sees with his own eyes that someone is in dire need and may have acted in certain ways because they saw no other choice.
Which brings us to our next role, big brother.
At first Rengoku may not come off as one until we see that his intentions for Inosuke, Tanjiro and Zenitsu are pure and genuine, as his dream right before the deeper one of his family was about being acknowledged as their older brother.
Not only that, we also come to know that Rengoku actually has a younger brother he is very protective of, Senjuro Rengoku. As Rengoku grew up under strict conditions and a heavy pressure of his father to pursue a role that was determined for him he instead wanted to shield his brother from a similar fate as we also get to know from his last words shortly before his death.
That trait we see when he interacts with the young Kamado, as he sees potential in him but does not want to force him into taking action right now as he is and take things at his own pace, if even so he sees it an obligation to protect him and the others including Nezuko he was first wary of and Tanjiro he disliked for breaking the rules of the Demon Corps, and stops them with interfering in most of the battles we see.
The deep care and pride he took in training his brother as well as trying to make Tanjiro his apprentice leads us to our next role Mentor.
Rengoku may not be the one who taught Tanjiro his breathing technique nor did they spend much time together due to his death, but we see that Rengoku respected Tanjiro which the latter reciprocated. Tanjiro as well as Inosuke who were present when Rengoku fought saw how much they had to learn and that what they had achieved was still far from what they imagined of the definition, strong. Which even left Inosuke in awe and weeping at Rengoku’s death.
Still Rengoku left a mark, an inspiration that will live in the hearts of each person he met as we see the different grieving reactions of the people who received the message of his death. Because even after his death the role of being an inspiration, someone who followed passion, worked hard and still had a pure heart is what keeps the hearts burning of those left behind.
Importance in series
Overlapping with the last paragraph Rengoku’s importance in the series is mostly the role model figure he sets for Senjuro and Tanjiro, and even the rest of the younger Demon Slayer Corps members.
A man who didn’t simply try to kill demons because of his personal feelings, but someone who adhered to rules, who passionately did what he at first was forced to do by his father but didn’t proceed in doing it with hate.
Instead Rengoku turned it into something he wanted to dedicate his life to, and in the end even died for that very purpose. A setting example that might have opened the eyes for some other people.
He also represents a figure of security and protection compared to all the other Hashira which is why he fits into the mentor and big brother role so well. Someone who might be overbearing at times but is still reliable showing the younger members that it is not only about swordsmanship alone but also about how to use it, the tactician side of it and the emotions that are connected.
Since Tanjiro and Rengoku share a lot of similarities, the former is probably the one who is a lot more impacted by the way Rengoku handled things, his morals and also the pure heart that never wavered for a moment. Rengoku, who didn’t have an easy life with his mother who was his biggest inspiration, still worked hard to live up to his father’s high expectations that seemed far over the top. And still he was happy, content, and took on a burning passion.
A very important lesson not only for Tanjiro but also for some of us who might feel like the situations we find ourselves in are not favorable at all but might benefit or make us more passionate as times pass by, giving us a bigger purpose in the future.
Last but not least, Rengoku who was clearly about to win against Akaza lost because of the Demon escaping due to his weakness to the sun. A scene that was heart-wrecking as we see Tanjiro cry and follow the demon who has long escaped like a coward.
The unfairness between the differences in that fight have been made clear, a death that could have been prevented if they had fought under fair circumstances.
But it is the first time we are confronted with the fact that there is a fundamental disadvantage, that was made clear because Rengoku died despite the fact that he was very capable of killing that demon. He didn’t grieve over his lost fight nor did he show any regret instead he fueled Tanjiro with an important message that would stick to him on his continuing journey, showing that Rengoku cared much more what would befall the young man instead of caring about his own state of body and mind.
What makes the character so interesting?
Rengoku was someone who first went against Tanjiro and his sister, appearing like someone strict and uptight, probably who would cause even more trouble in the future.
Yet in the Mugen Train arc that first impression was immediately discarded by his lovable personality and him actually just being someone who clearly likes his sets of rules.
Which shows that despite his love for morales and policies, he still reconsiders what is around him making his duality of being overly naive or narrow-minded but as well very attentive and accepting of new perspective.
In those very few moments we got to experience this character he impacted a whole series and audience in those, sadly short scenes that in the end lead to his end.
Not only did he die with a smile but with an even bigger message that left so many people pondering what it means to be strong, what it means to protect and how to deal with responsibility that was given to one.
He didn't just move our hearts only, but also those of the characters around him showing us various emotions of people like Inosuke that we would never have expected within the few minutes he appeared compared to other characters.
It shows how much these characters wanted people to be happy and feel like if they worked hard enough with pride they could reach lengths, not being determined what other people may think about them.
The feelings he desperately wanted to show his younger brother that seeped into the viewers hearts as well.
Making him the one and only blazing heart of the hashira, the passion and love within.

Wedding Deal – Chapter 16 [Iwaizumi x reader]
Tumblr media
Tip: If you are using Chrome there is a little add-on called InteractiveFics with that the story is much more vivid since Y/N will be replaced with the name you type in. Give it a try you won’t regret it~ Chiaki immediately averted her eyes, probably a cue that I should as well but I simply couldn’t find the timing to.
Also sorry I didn't update in a while, there was a lot of going on but I still hope you enjoy
Chiaki immediately averted her eyes, probably a cue that I should as well but I simply couldn’t find the timing to.
I was torn between running up to hug her painfully, squeezing out where she had been hiding and what she was doing here, or simply choking her for giving me the idea she might be either dead or in jail.
Prince Tooru must have caught my inner fight as his smile grew wider, as if to tease me he placed both of his hands on her shoulder as he walked behind her and looked over her head, straight at me.
“You may leave”, he instructed and I furrowed my brows.
She nodded but I saw him whisper something which encountered with another whisper.
For anyone else it might have looked like nothing, but I knew that Chiaki was probably annoyed as she played with her golden buttons on a too fancy uniform she was wearing.
With a curtsy she left the room giving me one meaningful gaze and disappearing.
She is keeping it as professional as ever.
After she left the room, as if he made the best choice in his life, Prince Tooru strode elegantly to the chair across from me and seated himself with one graceful movement.
“What did I miss?”, he asked while digging into his plate and giving everyone a look of excitement and curiosity.
The King sighed and placed back his cutlery as if he had lost his appetite.
“This is not becoming of someone who will ascend the throne”, he wiped his mouth and motioned to me which made me almost choke on the little food I had put in my mouth.
“We were currently occupied showing the young lady how things work around here”, he muttered and narrowed his eyes, “yet it seems like you are fooling around as ever.”
“Dear father”, Prince Tooru smiled as he also wiped his mouth with a handkerchief and sat straight, “fooling around and gathering information are quite two different things.”
Prince Hajime straightened next to me, like a hawk ready to grab it’s prey he listened to what the brunette had to say.
Is he taking him seriously afterall?
“You have intel?”, he asked him and suddenly even the King stopped every movement to listen to his son.
“Ah Miss”, he called to the maid and pointed at the cake and whispered something I could barely make sense of, “I kind of developed a sweet-tooth for those, mind preparing a plate and bringing it to my office?”
Prince Hajime put a fist on the table and the maid as well as myself jolted at the sound of it.
“I-I am sorry”, he put one hand up as his olive-eyes quickly scanned me and then went back to his brother, “would you mind telling me what this is all about? You eat those all the time, why would you want a plate now? Are you stalling?”
“Aren’t you rude for someone waiting for my intel?”, Prince Tooru narrowed his eyes and had a victorious grin.
“Tooru please just hurry up, time is essential-”
He cut the King off.
I cannot believe he cut him off…
“Father, I never wanted to ascend the throne. I am not the first son.”
This is the worst breakfast, why can’t his sister come back at least she seemed like the type to loosen things up…
“You are in a sense, you cannot run from it”, both held the gaze of the other before Prince Tooru’s angry expression wandered to Prince Hajime and softened into something close to regret.
“Things have been changing up a bit, some Provinces seem to have changed their court and there have been changes to Sovereigns”, the air seemed tense.
I didn’t know much about the other Provinces, despite that our economy was falling quite quickly in comparison to others.
Now that I think about it, maybe that is one of the reasons my mother and this one pushed the wedding- no it’s too early to theorize about that…
“Do you mean Dateko? I mean it was declared a long time ago that King Moniwa would retire from the throne due to his condition”, Prince Hajime said and it seemed like beside those two talking everybody was simply listening.
I saw the Prince Tooru’s eyes wander for a second as he watched the maid bring the plate with some jelly, cake and chocolate away to his office and they stared at me before he focussed back on his brother.
Wait, that combination sounds familiar.
“Dateko is one of them with Kenji Futakuchi ascending the throne against his will. He is planning to enforce the militia more… he was never found of King Moniwa’s softness so we could expect a little more aggressive turn when he finally starts leading Dateko”, he sighed followed by a groan from Prince Hajime and the King rubbed his eyes as the mood seemed to plummet.
Dateko… they were supposed to represent a steady yet friendly country with their former King being a pacifist. Their emerald color visualizes their flourishing agriculture and wonderful landscapes protected by enormous walls. Not anyone can enter that Province.
“I will meet Kenji and try to make a treaty, more or less renew the one we made with the former King.”
Prince Hajime shot him a glare, “Did you ever talk to that brat?”
“Well seems like you shouldn’t be the one doing that if you call him a brat”, Prince Tooru took a sip from his tea.
“If you thought I was someone whose head was only filled with plans for our armed forces then wait until you get to talk-”
“Look I might look like a moron in your eyes, but I know what I am doing. Dateko is still Dateko whether the King changes or not. The people are still the same and I am telling you just like the color of their Province the people are all friendly and pacifists. We also have General Aone, he is very loyal to King Moniwa and the old traditions of the country, things won’t change that easily.”
“But if Kenji-”, Prince Hajime was cut off by his father.
“Even if that brat was to lead, I know King Moniwa, he wouldn’t have chosen anyone if he didn’t see great potential in that man. On the other hand”, he gave Prince Hajime and me a strong, serious and yet meaningful gaze, “a nation is not only about its Sovereign. A Sovereign can only exist because of his people.”
“I knew that”, Prince Hajime muttered and lowered his head.
It’s probably not the first time he heard that…
I watched him silently ponder over the words and still being slightly upset about them which made me wonder how they usually talk.
Prince Tooru on the other hand lowered his head as well but was watching his brother closely.
“Also, Karasuno reformed and they are now allied with Nekoma which means-”
“We are in danger”, Prince Hajime muttered under his breath, his elbows on his table while he held his head.
“Do not worry, not yet I have something on my mind”, and now Prince Tooru gave me a meaningful look, “some people who might be able to act as a safety net for us.”

When you have no time play this – EveryFarm
The fifth game in our series: EveryFarm.
(This is just a recommendation from us, we do play the games ourselves we are neither sponsored nor paid or benefit from anything)
Tumblr media
Time flies by and in a blink of an eye you suddenly see that when exams are around the door, there is no time to play anything at all, this also applies after coming home from work, university or other duties.
In the middle of little lunch breaks or our hustle life we cannot afford to play time-consuming games, but does that mean we really have to give up games all in all?
No worries, even with the little amount of time, the game we will present you today might be your next companion for a little while since it’s playable despite having no time.
EveryFarm or also formerly known as EveryTown, with its previous game not being available in English anymore recently launched and won back a lot of returning as well as new players.
The game is available on IOS and Android, and was published by the company WeMadeConnect.
But what is EveryFarm about?
What is EveryFarm?
Is it yet another farming game typically close to all the others out there in the market?
With the story beginning as an old childhood friend of Lena and Tom returning to the town you grew up in, you realize that things haven’t been so good neither in infrastructure nor in crops. Like in every story it’s up to you, to get the old farm back in shape, increase profits, eco and the infrastructure, while also encountering several people on your journey for a farm you inherited from your grandfather.
A little bit of a side-story next to what you have to do, which also serves as a Tutorial and guideline for whenever you feel lost
The good thing is, the more you progress in the game the longer the waiting times of crops, animal produce, shops and mills take which makes it a good game to play while doing work or studying, or just throughout the day since you don’t need to be online all the time.
How to play EveryFarm
EveryFarm is not much of a chore, yet it feels very satisfying and kind of releases a bit of stress the way you play it.
For example, you pick the crops you want to sow, hold and press over the fields of your choice. Afterwards to water them (which is not an extra but also a process to make the crops grow) you can tap each and every of them separately or also hold and hover over the feels. The movement seems like you are actually watering as a watercan can also be swung from one field to another.
Next to crops you have the animals, mills and shops, which you need to tap in order to get your produce and when the three dots appear you can fill them with the needed ingredients to make them work (in case of animals you feed them and get the produce).
If you turn off the music you can also clearly hear the different crops, animals and the sounds of each action which puts a little ASMR effect into the game.
What you can do in EveryFarm
We already mentioned the farming aspect and also a bit of shops and mills.
But the thing that makes EveryFarm a bit more distinctive is that you have the Town Building and Farming aspect in one, and not only that but it’s connected to several characters and their stories which can be revealed step by step.
The more you progress in the story the more characters will unlock and you can also choose who can roam in your little town and who can’t. The more you interact and built a good relationship with them, the more rewards you get and later on you can also give them other outfits. The starters of the game are Lena, Tom and Doris who will keep you busy for a while.
There are also several types of quests, one being the main story and the other which is labeled as Crops to make you sow every crop there is and get a great bonus reward from it, later on there will be even more next to those two relating to characters and their requests.
As mentioned before, the decorating part.
Town Building may seem rather appealing for decoration purposes, but in EveryFarm there is a value called Eco which indicates how well the Ecosystem of your farm is doing. The higher the Eco the longer your produce and harvest stay fresh on the opposite the lower it is, well let’s say you won’t feel as happy staying offline for a while. Eco is also needed as a requirement for shops and mills, which next to coins limits you to build as many of them as you please, and makes your ‘flourishing Town’ not only filled with… profit layout. Eco can be gained through various buildings, trees, flowers etc. which come in a variety of themes that also expand and get updated. Many items can be collected and decorating the town for higher Eco is not only for the mills anymore, but you built your town in your own style.
Despite that also many things cost SEED, which you either have to work long for and get them rarely, there are also many options for the free to play people out there that can be bought by the usual coins.
You can also make many friends, since EveryFarm provides usually a limited 10 helping actions per day, they encourage the player to connect and help each other, since helping someone out gives the person the rewards of one produce of the chosen mill/shop and the person who the mill/shop belongs gets the double reward. A smart feature to connect people and by the message functions you can even post on their profile, which also gave us the opportunity to make some friends with wonderful people there.
Currently there is even an event going to 16th June, which allows 20 helps a day so be sure to use them for the bonus!
Aesthetics of EveryFarm
EveryFarm looks adorable from the starting screen to the little chibis and decorations you can use.
It is pleasant to look at and the green image of a farm and many flowers being available also makes it a lot easier to feel relaxed.
They use soft colors. They vary how vibrant they are but they are never too much or bothering.
Even when the main story switches to a dialog where you can see the full body picture of the characters they are in motion, which is interesting to look at when they usually show only their heads and shoulders in the quest area.
The sound of picking up the villagers are also cute, not only the girls but even Doris who is an old man laughs heartily which doesn’t break the concept of a relaxing and cute farming game.
All in all, it reminds you of the old nostalgic rpg games that one used to play.

Blue Circus – a Haikyu!! Circus AU pt.02
Art by @kahmurio on Deviantart Calmly and with newfound anxiety I briskly walked behind Akaashi as he turned his head and kept moving.  This Oikawa guy sounded much like the many bosses I’ve had before. Bossy, full of authority and with no regard for their employees, but I hoped that his meticulous eye was merely a sign of perfectionism and not of malice. I shouldn’t judge him before meeting…

Character Archetypes in Anime: What is the Outlaw’s role?
Tumblr media
It has been some time since we dove into the different and nuanced character types in anime, but here we are back again to continue our series with a new category!
Our entire world is built upon rules.
Be those issued by the government and to be followed pending consequence or the once that our society has built over the years; rules are what keeps us all together. It is very clear that without rules, everyone doing as they please, chaos would consume the world. Many are happy that in the confines of a set rulebook, many are safer than being completely free.
In spite of that, when injustice prevails in the mind of a person, they might overlook those rulings on purpose to break and regroup them to something that agrees with their mindset. The archetype we’re talking about today is fed up with the world as it is at this moment, hoping and striving to re-innovate and create something bigger than themselves.
It might come from injustice, or a simple loss of heart, but it can very well be an act of ultimate defiance.
The world is cruel, it beats down the ones that are different and celebrates wealth in front of the ones that have less.
Is it fair?
To this archetype- the answer is no.
So they edge across the line of the unlawful, just outside the corner, ready to do whatever it takes to strike down the structure others have built before him to change, rebell and recreate.
When some are afraid to fight back, this character has seen enough pain to start doing it for them.
Who is the one brave enough to dip into the dark side just so they can give others a better future?
Make way for the infamous: Outlaw.
If you haven’t had the chance to read the first three posts on the character archetypes “The Mentor”, “The Innocent” and “The Explorer”, I would strongly suggest that you go read those as well, as they build a foundation for this post. Do not worry though! I will recap the most important information for you firstly.
You might or might not know from our previous posts or even from your own experience, that there are certain roles that you see more often in a repeating manner. The ‘weird old uncle’, the ‘supportive mom friend’ or your ‘relentless hero’. Since we as humans love to repeat and reuse patterns that feel familiar to us to show relatability, these recurring roles exist.
Similar to these roles, the archetypes of characters that we are talking about in these blog posts and the ones before are set roles that have been used in all kinds of media and even in anime. Through the usage of these archetypes, a certain structure is created to show exactly what a character wants and what they strive for.
Tumblr media
What is their wish?
How do they want to accomplish it?
In the last anime archetype post we talked about the energetic and childlike Innocent type that resided in the ‘Freedom’ category, and today we’re going to progress with the next archetype that resides in the ‘Ego’ category.
Together, we will find out what makes the Outlaw so special, and how their incorporation into a storyline benefits a writer!
Be careful since the examples could potentially spoil and soil your experience, please be mindful that there will be major spoilers in the anime Code Geass and Deathnote.
Ready for part four?
Let’s begin!
The 12 Archetypes:
Just to make sure that everyone is brought up to speed, here is a recap from our previous posts!
Carl Jung, psychologist and creator of the personality types that you might recognize in MBTI typing quizzes has also written many guidelines in psychology and developed what these archetypes that we are talking about. Together with other writers, common characters have been agreed upon that now build the 12 main Archetypes. Jung was sure that each person could conform into at least one of his types, in which case his archetypes got molded into stereotypical characters used often in writing.
To explain it in just one sentence- the 12 Archetypes are roles with character attributes that are always similar and have a distinct purpose in their story.
Despite being created by a psychologist, in this day and age these Archetypes are less used for psychological reasons but serve more as building blocks for authors and writers to build characters that are contrasting and still work together really well in their own world. These types are also very beneficial since they are often recognized by readers and viewers due to being used frequently.
To build on the explanation that we have made last time, these types are in fact not what makes a character a ‘protagonist’ or ‘antagonist’, and they furthermore do not define moral alignment. Instead, they only show the goals of the character, their general idea of characteristics and what drives them.
Tumblr media
Here is a list of all 12 of the Archetypes to give you a better understanding:
Ruler
Artist
Sage/Mentor (click here to read!)
Innocent (click here to read!)
Explorer (click here to read!)
Rebel
Hero
Wizard
Jester
Everyman
Lover
Caregiver
Sound familiar? They are often used to describe all kinds of characters!
Any character in any type of media can be sorted into at least one of these Archetypes. It often also depends on how the character is written and what traits they display, meaning that the Archetype can change if for example the character has had significant character development in an anime.
Let’s take the example of the antagonist, or more simply spoken- the villain.
A villain does not have to be the Archetype of the Rebel or the Ruler, but as mentioned before the types don’t have anything to do with moral alignment. Anyone can technically be anything. Even the “Outlaw” archetype, which we’re ‘diffusing’ in this post, can have softer tendencies.
The same thing goes for protagonists or side characters. If we quote from the Mentor post:
“A protagonist can be an Explorer such as ‘Luffy’ from One Piece, or a typical hero such as ‘Midoriya Izuku’ from Boku no Hero Academia. Same thing goes for side characters, the archetype is more focused on a character’s motivation and characteristics than what their importance is in the big picture.”
So, as you may or may not know, the Archetypes are split into four categories that describe where their drive and motivation comes from.
Order: Providing structure
Freedom: Spiritual journey (yearning for paradise)
Social: Connecting to others
Ego: Leaving a mark in the world
This time, as we’ve already talked about the Mentor, Innocent and Explorer who are all part of the Freedom category (spiritual journey), we are going to tackle the first type in this new division (Ego) as we talk about the Outlaw.
When we talk about the Ego category, do not misconstrue these archetypes as egotistical. It might sound similar, but the reason why the Ego is their main core value has a much more interesting reason behind it. The Ego types have learned from early on that leaving something behind is the only way for them to achieve greatness. They see their own life as the focal point of something. That doesn’t necessarily mean that they are self-centered, it can actually be quite the opposite.
Their reasoning and motivation comes from influence.
The Ego category knows that their actions have consequences, and these actions can bring out all sorts of butterfly effects. The way that the hero knows that he can save the world by working hard and leaving peace behind, or the way that the Outlaw is ready to delve into darker corners of the world because he is aware that doing something bad for the right reasons can change the situation for everyone. The magician has such interests as well, he learns and polishes his trade and makes himself powerful to change the world.
Ego is in this case equivalent to ‘self’.
The Ego archetypes put themselves in the limelight to attain something, not to boast or become better than everyone else. They do it to leave a mark on the world. That is their core desire, similar to how the Freedom category has the desire to attain a paradisiac world.
To recap this new category shortly, the other archetypes that reside in this category are ‘the Outlaw’ who strives for liberation and does anything to leave a mark in the world, ‘the Magician’ who wishes for power and wants to show the world forcefully how important they are and lastly ‘the Hero’ who attains mastery in all elements to leave not only a mark on the world, but a eternal peace as well.
The Outlaw is often someone who has been through many trials.
It’s not always the case, but their determination stems from being a part of the lower class, or from an oppressed group. It could also be that they have seen injustice happen to others, so they vow to themselves to change the world.
Tumblr media
As you can probably already tell, the Freedom archetypes are much more mellow. They live either at the sidelines like the Innocent and the Mentor, or they go solo to venture across the world. Ego archetypes on the other hand are sure that their own actions will be able to change not only something for themselves, but for the entire world. They are often a focal point in the story for a longer time, or even the reason the story begins for that matter.
Outlaws have been through much pain, and they are more often not from a position in which they’ve either tried to change the world legally or seen other people try.
And fail.
How could the world be so cruel?
Why is there pain and suffering, for the ones who have done nothing but try to live?
Outlaws, also called Rebels, are tired of seeing the same misfortunes happen over and over again. So they finally snap and decide that for the world to be better, it must first be destroyed and then completely rebuilt.
“Rules are made to be broken”
A rogue Outlaw will have very high motivations that stem from seeing a corrupt system failing its people. They are completely sure that in order to truly change something, you can’t play nice. Filled with rage against their oppressor, their revenge shall be served cold on a platter for the ones that have taken and never gotten what they deserved.
In this case it could be a corrupt government, a certain person that has wronged them or their loved ones or even the entire world with its societal norms.
Outlaws never fit in, they felt alienated and pushed away from everyone in their life, or have finally realized that they have to jump out of their “normal” shell to trusly wreak havoc across everyone.
Their greatest strength is their radical freedom, by stripping themselves of the shackles that held them back their entire life and also not being afraid of doing something illegal at this point, they are unhinged and ready to strike at any time. Fearing their own powerlessness when they don’t take action is the very reason they are so vicious.
The strategy of an Outlaw is simple at its core: disrupt, destroy and shock everything in their way to give everyone around them the same freedom they have found. Their concept is similar to anarchy for a time. Even though they mostly have the intention to rebuild the world after destroying it, their violence and wrath is a means to an end they can justify easily.
If they hurt us, we can hurt them. Simple as that.
With such a radical approach to their goals, how can Outlaws improve a plot? Why are they so vital to the story?
Why are Outlaws Important?
“If the world doesn’t change with lawful behavior, I will have to get my hands dirty…”
The way a rebellious Outlaw is seen changes drastically from which perspective the story is told.
If we have a story in which the hero tries to save the world from a rogue Outlaw, the latter is often seen as the villain. They don’t mind that of course, seeing as their self made freedom unties them from any morals, they often clash with the Hero archetype even though their core value of leaving a mark on the world is the same.
For the hero, if they are the protagonist of the story, the means do not justify the end. Good and bad are still morals he obeys.
But a story from the Outlaws perspective can change everything. Seeing what the Rebel has been through, their motivations and even kindness that seeps through their bad behavior can come off as a relatable story for many others that have been casted away and mistreated. A hero in a different sense, just like Robin Hood who is still a thief but gives back to the poor, the Outlaw has good intentions.
Isn’t it freeing and refreshing to finally see someone wreak havoc for the ones you cherish?
Tumblr media
In a fictional setting of course, seeing someone risk their life and their reputation as they delve into incriminatory behavior is interesting for many people to see. This alone constitutes an Outlaws importance, watching someone else take on the job no one else is brave enough to.
Especially when they have a clash with a morally light character, for example one of the Hero or Explorer archetype their vital role of playing the dark side to contrast with the heroic protagonist lets the viewers confront their own morals.
Are you sure you wouldn’t cross over to the dark side to save your loved ones and do some good for the world? Or are you certain that only with good action comes good consequence?
A well written Outlaw character creates conflict not only in his story, but lets the viewer re-evaluate his own decision making. The Outlaw not only disrupts the flow of hsi world, but also the one in your mind. That is why his role is so important.
To give you a better view, here are some examples!
Outlaw Example:
The Outlaws have the inherent desire to be seen, and have no fear to destroy even if it costs them their morals. They are ready to leave an honest life behind to recreate their destiny, unhappy with how they’ve come into the world.
If we’re talking about a complete turnaround, we have two characters that left a mundane life full of lies and conspiracy to push themselves into the middle of the world.
Lelouch vi Brittania, tired of his life as a prince that has been cast away, seeing his mother be treated horribly because of her status and himself, was turned into a misfit and placed at an academy having to live as just about any other elite student.
In his mind he was alway ready to take revenge on all of Brittania and make peace with himself and his dead mother.
But it is only after attaining the Geass power, that lets him control a person's mind for one command that he realizes; I have the power to finally overthrow his cruel government.
Lelouch is a master tactician, he is aware of others people’s weaknesses and casually uses that to win at many gambling shows, making money for himself and his sister Nunally, who is chained to a wheelchair and also at the mercy of Britannia. Their status means nothing to the world, and Lelocu has not only seen his japanese friend Suzaku be stripped of his culture and put down as an Eleven.
For a long time, Lelouch has been laying low, but his Outlaw activities begin when his Geass power gives him the power to control other people. Slowly but surely, he starts his own movement to overthrow the britannian government, and he steps over corpses as he does so.
Although we have Suzaku as his heroid counterpart, Lelouch feels it fair that the prude royalty and their loyalists taste a bit of their own medicine. He is ready to destroy land, rules and even sacrifices himself to make the Japanese free again. His morals are off surely, but his role as the Outlaw serves to give other people power.
Contrary to him, our second example delves a lot deeper into crime, as he is ready to not only leave collateral damage but has the intention to rid all the world of filth.
Light Yagami, also a young mind that was bored of life and perfection, only starts his debut as an Outlaw when he receives the death note. A notebook that kills whoever's name is written into it. He was a perfect student, a god son to his parents and generally what one would normally think of as the perfect young man. Handsome and clever, his traits were the perfect breed for an Ego archetype.
He only starts to grow his motivation to cleanse the world after attaining his power, while Lelouch has been ruminating on his place in the world since his tragic past.
Starting off slow as he kills some criminals he feels have no right to live, he quickly spirals into a serial killer who will not leave any guilty person alive.
The difference between him and Lelouch is simple.
Lelouch wishes for a better world in which everyone can live, once the oppressor has accepted the oppressed, leaving his mark as maybe a villain but ultimately a hero to many.
Light, with his power being completely destructive from the get-go as no remorse for any repentance. What he sees as guilty must die, with no exceptions. He even goes to lengths of killing innocent people who are in his way, and pushes himself to the role of the highest being, ridding himself of any consequence. We can see that when Lelouch kills or destroys something that could have been saved, he regrets it immediately, if we take for example Euphemia who only had pure intentions.
Morally, Lelouch is a rebellious person, while Light has rid himself of any fault and kills whatever comes into his way.
The fine line between “having a means to an end” and being completely unhinged are edges that Outlaws move on frequently. At the end of the day, they wish to make the world a better place, but at what cost?
Finally, both of theri examples have seen an end to their life. One with a smile on their face, knowing that their actions will breed a better world, and the other as a defeated man with his goal long out of reach.
Conclusion:
How have you found this first venture into the Ego category?
The examples and explanations have hopefully led you to start thinking to yourself how important balance is in life.
A character that has been through so much pain, or was forced to witness it that they are more than fine with stepping into the fire to alleviate it.
The dark side of this archetype might seem unreasonable, but in fiction it's important to realize that there's always the need for a villain for a story to be believable. Maybe you can find your own rebellious side, and try to understand it more but keep in mind that the means do not always justify the end.
How do you feel about this Archetype? I would love to hear your opinion in the comments.
Don’t let the dark side get you!
Until next tea time~
