Something I don’t see many people talking about is how to set spiritual goals.
Which on some level I get. Goal setting is kind of at odds with spirituality when so much of spirituality involves letting go. It’s not like you always have control over the results.
But I also know I’ve been guilty of ignoring a whole host of desires and interests I have around spirituality because I just straight up didn’t know how to set goals or work toward those things in the context of spirituality. I’m still learning myself but I wanted to share some of what I’ve learned so far.
Set Action Goals Not Outcome Goals
What’s helped me jump start my spiritual life a lot lately is setting goals for what I want to do, not the skills or relationships I necessarily want to have. I think that can work but for me it held me back. Focusing on the actions I want to do helps me enjoy the journey. I don’t become frustrated when I’m not feeling close to my goddess or I’m still struggling with a magical skill. That kind of stuff ebbs and flows. But when my effort is clearly defined, I can focus on enjoying the breakthroughs rather than worrying when I’ll finally achieve something.
Goals I currently have in this vein are working my way through a suggested reading list about the Morrigan and to do shadow work journaling at least once a week.
Do Less Than You Think You Can
A huge problem I see in a lot of witchcraft communities these days is spiritual burnout. People are not getting enough out of their practice to be able to keep up with it. A lot of that has to do with our ideas around what constitutes a practice.
Keeping the core of my practice smaller has helped so much. I really enjoy giving offerings to spirits, ancestors, and my gods regularly. So that’s a thing I do regularly. To make sure I keep doing it, I lower the barrier to entry. Sure I could take a long ritual bath and then sing hymns in the original celtic if I wanted to - but I’d rather just come downstairs in the morning, pop on some incense, pour some water or booze, and say a quick prayer. That’s what I can manage every day to every few days.
Keep your goals to things you can do between every day and every week when you’re starting out. Shoulds are spiritual poison. Do less than you think you can and keep a little in the spiritual tank at all times.
Check In Regularly
I evaluate my spiritual life at every full moon and at every quarter holiday. It helps immensely. I find what I want out of my spiritual life changes from month to month but especially from season to season. Checking in at cyclical phases is a helpful reminder that everything is a process. It helps me really understand how little changes can add up.
Whenever you sense shifts in your spiritual life, take some time to reevaluate how you’re doing things. Are you shoulding yourself? Are you getting what you need?
Define Your Why
It’s a rare person I speak to who clearly knows why they’re putting all this effort into their spiritual life in the first place. It really can help when you feel stuck in a spiritual rut.
For me it changes. Right now, I’m trying to take my spiritual studies more seriously because I feel called to a life of pagan ministry. I am preparing a strong foundation for myself before I delve into interfaith spaces so I can get more hands on training. I’m hoping to apply to a CPE program in the Spring or Fall of next year.
Christians often use the phrase “to prepare my heart for” and that’s how I feel about it here too. I’m trying to prepare my heart to step into the role of priestex for my community. It’s resonates with me deeply and whenever I feel lost, it’s the why I can return to right now.

Conclusion
I think we can all benefit from setting better spiritual goals, ones that bring us toward our practice instead of replicating capitalist pressures to perform that push us away from it. Remember, above all, our spiritual journey is for us to enjoy, change, and grow through. Do whatever you can to protect it from pressures that might interfere. And always keep some in the tank. It’s a long winding road ahead.
A lot of the substances we think of as protection against the supernatural (e.g. salt, silver, garlic) are actually antibacterial, and would have helped stave off infections and illnesses that people once attributed to supernatural influence.
Based on this, I want to see a story where vampires are repelled by hand sanitizer.
i just fucking love people bro just now i passed by a woman in a jumpsuit holding a caulking gun and totally unprompted she called out from across the lawn, "buy an old frat house, they said! it'll be fun, they said! guess what i just found. a single thigh high in the rafters. so much for chastity!" and idk how to explain how absolutely enchanted i am by that one ten-second interaction like people are so vibrant
