My latest novel is out! It’s a YA fantasy titled The Art of Saving the World and it’s got all of the following and more:
questioning asexual lesbian protagonist
who finds out she’s the ~Chosen One~
except the Powers That Be have no faith that she’ll succeed in actually saving the world
loophole!! they send in several AU versions of her as backup
who are also all queer
and dealing with some flavor of anxiety!
and endometriosis in some cases
how do you even cope with seeing AU versions of yourself when you’re self-conscious as hell
“oh my god do I really bite my lip that much oh GOD does my laugh sound like that????”
“if one useless Hazel can’t save the world how are SEVERAL useless Hazels supposed to do it jfc”
there’s a grouchy lady dragon mentor
a Mysterious Government Agency
and an out-of-control interdimensional rift
as one review mag says: “takes the standard chosen-one plot formula and tips it on its head, then wrings what’s left for all the angst and existential crises it’s worth” which is PRETTY ACCURATE
and also the author (that’d be me) is queer and disabled and has cats to feed
This book came out in September 2020 and it got pretty badly hit by the coronavirus crisis in terms of marketing/promo, so ngl, I’m kinda worried about its sales, and I’m seriously hoping word of mouth will be able to save the day. So if any of this appeals to you:
please share this post/spread the word!
please pick up the book from a library or bookstore!

I really don’t need to buy any more books, I have a lot of books I still haven’t read. That does not mean I’m not going to buy more books though or ask for more as gifts.

I haven’t used this platform in awhile. Been busy and just not used tumblr much in awhile. But, if anyone still follows me and can maybe share this, even if they can’t donate, it can hopefully get more eyes on it. Mikhaela is not someone I know very well or even personally, we met on a book page. She seems amazing and she could use some help.

A STORY THAT NEEDS TO BE TOLD: The Light in Hidden Places by Sharon Cameron
Tumblr media
Long before I had ever thought about becoming a writer, a woman appeared on my television screen, describing her personal experience of the Holocaust. I was riveted. Imagine a teenage girl with a six-year-old sister, alone and destitute in Nazi-occupied Poland, choosing to shelter one Jewish man who has jumped from a death train. Then she chooses to hide six more Jews. And six more. And then the Nazis requisition her house.
Thirteen Jews in the attic, four Nazis directly below them, and one young girl and her sister standing in between. Her name was Stefania Podgórska, and I never forgot her story.
I had no idea then that a seed had been planted.
Fast forward two and a half decades, and now I am a writer. Now I can Google. I find hours of this woman’s uncut interviews. I find her son and travel with him to Poland, where we meet her little sister and one of the women they saved. And what I discover is one of the most remarkable narratives of personal courage, sacrifice, resilience, and resourcefulness I have ever encountered.
This wasn’t just a story I wanted to write. This was a story that needed to be written.
The seed had sprouted. It became this novel.
Politics and culture might have changed since the 1940s, but the fundamentals have not. Love breeds love, and hate breeds hate. And that’s why the story of the Podgórska sisters is a story for now just as much as then. We need heroes. We need people of courage to stand up and say no in the face of hate. And that’s exactly what the Podgórska sisters did.
Maybe that’s why I never forgot that broadcast. Because a part of me hoped, if tested, that I could be just a little bit like them. I hope reading this book inspires you to wish the same.
In love,
Sharon Cameron
The Light in Hidden Places will be on-sale March 3rd, 2020, and is a remarkable story of heroism and bravery in Nazi-occupied Poland.

Recsmas Day 23: A Book Everyone Needs to Know About
In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan. The one thing my better half always says about this book, “I hate the cover but I love the story.” I could see how a cover could make someone pass a book over but this is not one you want to do that too.
Elliot is snarky, sassy, pissy, and so much fun. When on a field trip Elliot sees a wall no one else can he gets the chance of a lifetime to go to a school in the Borderlands. There he is thrust into a world that tries to make him into what they need... and he refuses. He’s a pacifist, he doesn’t need a weapon. He has words and books and he’s going to change the world with them.
This book is amazing. You think you know where the romance is going but I promise you don’t because Elliot is an oblivious (justifiably so when it comes to dealing with emotions but loveable) idiot. I laughed, I cried, and I laughed some more. This book is amazing.

Recsmas Day 22: A Book With Awesome Girls
The Good Luck Girls by Charlotte Nicole Davis. When one of the girls accidentally kills her client her sister decides it’s time for them to leave the life of a Good Luck Girl behind and quickly. Three other girls at the "welcome house” join them on their bid for freedom. It’s like a supernatural wild west, with 5 girls that have decided that being nice is overrated if they want to survive. The romance is soft and definitely not the focus.
While one girl in particular took awhile to grow on me I loved these ladies and I desperately wanted them to find freedom and happiness. I can’t wait for book 2.

Recsmas Day 21: A Nonfiction Book
A Woman of No Importance by Sonia Purnell. This book is about a badass woman spy, her name was Virginia Hall and she had a prosthetic leg she named Cuthbert. Honestly, how have I not sold you on her already?
She was considered the most “dangerous of allied spies” and had a huge bounty on her head and no matter how many times she was told to evacuate for her own safety she held strong and established a vast spy network through France.
This woman needs a movie after her already.

Recsmas Day 20: A Good Villain
Sparrowhawk by Delilah Dawson is an intriguing comic set in Victorian era-ish about Artemesia (Art)  a mixed race woman growing up in a household with her wicked step-mother and likable sister. She gets dragged into faerie shenanigans and the world isn’t black and white and when your allies are questionable sources (because faeries) what you get at the end is probably not at all what you had wanted.
Note, the art was kinda lacking and a bit weird at times but the story was good.

Recsmas Day 19: A Book That Made You Cry
A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness. It doesn’t matter how many times I’ve read this book (it has been a lot) I always cry. Every time I cry. This book hits so close to home and every time I bawl my eyes out and just want to give Conor the hug he needed throughout the book.

Recsmas Day 18: A Child’s Book
Do You Believe in Groovicorns?
Okay, silly and funny and weird but honestly this book is such a delight. I have a wonderful little girl in my life that calls my aunty and I love to spoil her with books and every time I’m over we read whatever she hands me, even if it’s Click Clack Moo: Cows that type, 5 Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed, or, you guessed it, Do You Believe in Groovicorns? 8 times in a row. I’ve read lots of kids books this year, most of them picture books, and I was going to stick with one of the middle grade books I read this year before deciding on this because reading books with her has been an important part of my year and I’ve enjoyed it.

Recsmas Day 17: A Book You Don’t See on Tumblr
We’re Going to Need More Wine by Gabrielle Union. I listened to this on audio and Gabrielle Union was the narrator and hearing it from her mouth makes everything feel even more passionate and important. Some of the essays get really super tough, you laugh with her, want to cry with her and for her, and honestly I just want to applaud what an amazing woman she is.
