No worries! I was just trying to answer to the best of my abilities and to give as indepth reasonings as I was able in a small span of time.
I get a little defensive over the term "fetishizing gay relationships" because we were once accused of changing GDC's (MDZS) plot from the original raw and adding in the BL/yaoi elements and scenes to "please our fujoshi fetishes." Every once in a while, I still delete comments on our site from people claiming we changed GDC. It's one of the reasons I added a disclaimer to the first chapter of GDC to be honest.
People who came to read GDC after watching the Untamed didn't do any research and believed it to be a regular cultivation novel, therefore getting REALLY upset about the fact that there was kissing and, OMG, sex! It was to the point that I was actually getting emails from people asking if I could please send them the "real" version of the novel without our added fujoshi fetishizing and others who asked if they could use our translation so they could delete all the yaoi elements and make it "more like the Untamed with only bromance."

I just want to understand what draws straight women into this yaoi genre. How do you feel when you have to translate novels which fetishize gay relationship and portrays women as dumb cannon fodders? I am not putting this genre or anyone down here. I do enjoy reading these novels. I am engrossed by the limitless kinks in the writing. But I am deeply disturbed as a woman there is so much internalised misogyny involved here. Just want to know your thoughts.
Hey there, there are a ton of danmei (Chinese gay novels) that don't "fetishize" gay relationships or portray women as dumb cannon fodders. I personally hate it when people say danmei are only there as a gay fetishizing platform. I think I have read more "normal" novels that have more women as dumb cannon fodders than I have in danmei. I don't know which novels you have read, but it seems you've been reading ones that are cultivation types. I have found that in any cultivation novels, there is blatant misogyny that is not present in most danmei.
In the BL world, in general, there are many types of genres and in those genres you will find the classic dumb cannon fodder bitch types. But, there is so much misogyny in straight romance that they become cookie cutter and bland which is what caused me to switch to BL novels.
In the BL world, in general, there are many types of genres and in those genres you will find the classic dumb cannon fodder bitch types. But, there is so much misogyny in straight romance that they become cookie cutter and bland which is what caused me to switch to BL novels. As a demisexual, I value love and chemistry over sex, even in the novels I read.
What attracts me to danmei is the fact that the plots are a lot more diverse and unique over any heterosexual novels. It's fundamentally the same thing as people reading heterosexual romance novels, just the main characters are two males. Not all danmei are "yaoi" while most are "shounen ai."
The difference in the two is like erotica versus a romance novel. Yaoi is where detailed sex scenes exist just like in erotica, where shounen ai is the same as a romance novel which are usually centered aound the plot and relationship building or overcoming one's past. Danmei also frequently include a world where gender assumptions are challenged and reimagined. And in today's world, reading something where everyone is not picked on for being gay is a breath of fresh of air.
In the real world, women can be vile, nasty, and shitty. In some of the more popular danmei, the women tend to lean toward the horrible spectrum, but I have read enough to tell that: you cannot make an assumption that all danmei include this trope.
There are people who write BL for fetishism, and people who only enjoy it for the fetish. But don't some men do the same when it comes to lesbian porn? Men liking boobs is the same thing as a straight woman liking penis. Just because straight women read novels where there is more penis doesn't mean we fetishize gay relationships. We just like reading about men over reading about boobs as vivacious as Mount Everest.
And just as you said, assuming you are a straight female, you enjoy reading about limitless kinks. If you were truly disturbed, you wouldn't read another danmei again. Also, you can join groups that will direct you towards novels that do not include the misogynistic side of the novel world. Novelupdates.com is a good source for newbies in the Chinese novel world.
Also, just because we like reading about 2D boys relationships doesn't mean we go gaga over 3D males (gay porn). Though I will admit, as a straight female, I'd rather watch gay porn over heterosexual porn since that's geared towards males and I don't want to see vagina or boobs since I have my own. Which, again, is the same thing as straight males watching lesbian porn since they don't want to see another male's dick.

Behind the Smile
Body dysmorphia is where you hate your body so much that you can’t even look in the mirror, you hate photos and anytime you meet someone new, you instantly worry about how you look in their eyes. It’s hearing every bad remark ever made about your looks every time you do look in the mirror. “You wear that size? I thought you’d be two times larger.” “Do you know why gay men turn gay? Because of your face.” “Why don't you go to the gym? Then maybe you’d find a boyfriend.” Body dysmorphia becomes you.
Anxiety feeds off body dysmorphia and makes you afraid and scared of even going to meet new people. It makes you afraid of being seen going for a walk, working out, or even leaving the house. Anxiety is being grateful for having to wear masks during Covid because at least you can hide half of your face. Anxiety is feeling trapped and afraid that you’ll be alone forever, no one loves you because of how you look or speak. “Maybe it’d be better if I hide my body.” “Maybe it’d be better if I never speak again.” “Maybe it’d be better if I were gone.” Anxiety becomes you.
Depression feeds off anxiety and makes you believe that you can never do any better that no one would even care or notice if you were gone. Depression is not always apparent, it can be hidden behind a smile, but if someone mentions it, they instantly get called crazy or “maybe you should go to the doctor and be put on meds to make you happy.” “Maybe if you left your house, you’d be happier.” “Maybe if you had friends, they’d cheer you up.” Depression becomes you.
Having all three means you are afraid to make friends because you are afraid of what has been said or done before and because you have no friends, you’re depressed. Having all three means you believe what is said about you, you believe no one cares because no one talks to you unless you start a conversation first. Depression and anxiety are knowing that less than four people will even read this until the end, but hoping more people will read it.
For anyone, with or without mental illnesses, please tell them you love them every day, tell them they are beautiful, tell them how much your life has changed since you met them, tell them they are a special existence and they are worthy of being alive. Do not wait for a holiday, their birthday, or some event. Tell them every day. Because you never know who will need to hear that they are loved, cared for, special and an amazing person. You never know what anyone is thinking or what their brain is telling them. You never know what anyone is thinking behind their smile.
To those who read this all the way through, thank you. Mental illness is real, should be talked about every day. Though we, as humans, may struggle, an “I love you,” “You’re beautiful,” “I’m grateful I met you,” can lift the soul and remind someone they have something to appreciate in this lonely world.

Telling someone who has depression to just smile, be happy and stay positive is probably one of the worst things to say.

Hi addis i just want to ask to maje sure is it weird ti watch yaoi and my old is 13 i feel like other girs in my age love boy and girl relationship but i can't stop reading yaoi it is a part of my life know so is it ok if i read it in my age
I mean, I can't tell you not to do something. But most yaoi series are rated 18+ for a reason. Maybe stick to shounen ai until you're at least 16 and move to hard core yaoi after. 13 seems a little too soon.

Hope everyone is staying safe during this Covid-19 mess. I was quarantined for a week due to some medication that I had to take after going to the doctor on Saturday. It compromises my immune system so I'm going to twiddle my thumbs in isolation. Just remember to wash your hands and social distance.

Hi Addis! Thanks so much for all the work you and EXR do! I know this is a suuuuuuper old manga, but I was wondering if you guys ever got around to doing the other chapters of Hate, hate, hate by Sachimo? I can only find chapter one online... :’(. Thanks so much in advance!!
We are pretty sure that it was dropped by Haji Sensei, so the series will probably not continue.
