The only thing Samantha could think was what the hell she had gotten herself into. Stupid bachelorette party. Screw having friends. If another of her girls decided to have a bachelorette party in Las Vegas, she was going to send her flying “I would take the money if I could, but I can't, that would be a bribe considering that I work for the district attorney” Samantha almost gave him a side smile. Almost was the key word because after all none of that sounded fun in the slightest but at least he wasn't being a pain in the ass "But now that I'm thinking, we are technically married so it's more like 'spousal support' and God knows I'll have earned it when this is all over.” She rolled her eyes but gave him a small sideways smile because despite everything, apparently they were now making jokes about that shitty situation. Maybe she just didn't need to be on defensive mode all the time or maybe it was the wine thinking for her. “Who knows? Maybe I can keep it and buy one of those fancy leather bags trophy wives usually get” She already had the leather bag but was clearly mocking him “Speaking of trophy wives I have to admit, weird you don't had one already, I mean before all this mess” Samantha pointed out at the space between them.
Was he… was he being funny and flirty? She didn't think he had it on him. He seemed more of the 'no need to play to get' type of guy. Samantha assumed that the girls were throwing themselves at him. Not so much because he was charming, because so far James seemed to be anything but nice, but because his fortune was probably very attractive to anyone who wanted to never work again in their lives. Samantha wasn't stupid, what he didn't have in being nice she replaced with his good looking face and his money, so most of the girls believed that he was a big catch. If she was honest, she wasn't sure he could see past his navel. “Well that's a stretch, I see that highly unlikely but you can always dream.” She was joking. Kind of. Nothing wrong with him but after the divorce she was gonna expend the rest of her days pretending she didn't know him that deep. Nothing personal but it was probably gonna be weird when they saw each other around.
"Play stupid games, get stupid prizes" She said before shaking her head but giving him a small smile. Well, at least they had broken the ice. Samantha paused before continuing and shifted a little in her seat as the waitress placed the food between them. She waited for the waitress to walk away to continue talking “My parents are probably going to find out at some point, my coworkers could find out and rumors get spread like flies” To get divorced they needed a judge, probably someone who knew her or her dad. The only thing that bothered her was that everything was probably going to turn into a media crisis and it was going to be a headache to deal with the consequences. She wasn't worried about her parents finding out, they would think James was quite a catch even though his family was in the media more than what it's healthy. Problem was that they were going to have a lot to say about how the events had unfolded, drunk in Las Vegas and who she had married precisely, they would have expected someone with a lower profile but if they were being honest, the media interest in James seemed to be more cause he was quite a catch and not because he did something to deserve it. Samantha was sure that if they had both been sober they wouldn't have even given each other a second glance, but they had decided to get drunk so know they had a marriage in their hands. “Some people will simply know that this marriage existed, our lawyers won't talk but we also have the judge, the secretary, the person filing the documents" A lot of people that could known "Maybe you might wanna give your PR person a heads up so they can have something ready just in case" Samantha was not that worried about what they could say, worst case scenario she was gonna be called a 'gold digger', not that she needed his money but he had way more than her, that was for sure. If the media decided they were worthy of having paparazzi or photographers chasing them around, that was going to be a headache.

It seemed James was pushing every button to displease her today. And though, he knew that he needed her right now, he couldn't bring himself to care about annoying her. It wasn't in his upbringing to really care about what others thought. James often wondered how his siblings bypassed that, how they still grew up so caring, loving, and all that. He had tried that long ago, worn his heart on his sleeve or whatever - didn't do him much good. Still, for the sake of keeping civility on the table, James only shrugged at her response. Yes, he did believe he was a catch. Next question.
To her next response, James only rolled his eyes. Before remembering she could see him talking. He was so used to conversations on the phone where he could make as many faces as he wanted, and no one would know. "That's nothing for you to lose your mind over. I just meant offering it as a favor repayment. I am...glad you're willing to help, just wanted to do something to show that gratitude." That made sense, right? Honestly, this was one of the few times that he had to think so much about his words before talking. It was so foreign to him, and James hated that. "Seems I have a long way to learn talking to you, huh. Long road ahead," he pondered out loud. He wasn't sure how well he'd do, checking each word before saying it out loud. Once again, maybe for the sake of civility between them, James would try. For a second, he wondered if Sam would knock sense into him, if he didn't try. Probably, so he may as well. Until they could get this blessed divorce. James should've known, behaving like Irvin would get him in trouble. One stupid mistake, and he'd incur his parents' wrath. Well, mostly his father, but his mother would pull the disappointment card. It was all the same to him.
"You got it. I doubt we'll even need the three months, but we can keep that date if you just enjoy my company by then." He semi-teased. When she gave her ultimatum though, James couldn't help but feel a slight smidge of pride? This woman had fire in her, and that always intrigued him. The food arrived at the perfect moment, before any mention of divorce. They had to be careful that no one around them heard anything. The more people that knew, the more possibilities that someone found out and exposed the whole truth. He thanked the waitress, and when she stepped away, he turned his attention back to Samantha. "Sounds like the perfect plan to me. Trust me, that's the last time I get drunk in Vegas. I have learned my lesson." An eyebrow raised at the mention of his family again. Sure, James was worried about that, but wasn't she worried about her own? "Well, my family and yours. That's not how I envision meeting any in-laws." He almost rolled his eyes at his own comment, chances are - he's already met his future in-laws (most likely, family friends).

“ i only have eyes for you. “  - for caitlyn
FIVE TIMES CAITLYN REALLY SAW IRVIN
“ i only have eyes for you. “  - @overnightheartbeats
(1)
It was Irvin's birthday. There was no excuse Caitlyn could have made that would have worked and anyway, his birthday was a good opportunity to do a little bit of watching. Through her work, she had learned the power of observation. Analize people's movements, their reactions, body language, gestures. All that was part of her job, what she knew how to do best. Caitlyn wanted to believe that she was doing her job right because she believed that his birthday was exactly how she would have imagined he would celebrate. He had decided to celebrate his birthday in a bar, a fancy bar but a bar indeed, some of his friends were there and the atmosphere was much more relaxed than she would have expected if he had decided to throw up a big party. However, she was pretty sure tho he would have more celebrations in the following days like something more formal with his parents. Most of his friends had shoes that cost more than her monthly salary but almost all of them were truly nice or that's the vibe she got at least.
She sipped her drink as she watched Irvin play pool with a couple of friends. He was wearing a white shirt and some dark jeans. He was very simple but she made no sense to deny that he looked handsome for the simple fact that he was naturally good looking. Caitlyn could understand what almost all the women in Manhattan find in him apart from his big-ass wallet and the ridiculous amount of money he would be inheriting one day. She ran her eyes over his face as he leaned in to shoot the balls. A couple of strands of his hair fell in his face and his shirt opened a little as he leaned forward, allowing her to see the skin of his chest peeking out from under the fabric. Irvin laughed at something one of his friends said after he shot and Caitlyn could almost hear his laugh in her ears even though she was too far away to really hear it. Almost as if he could feel the weight of her gaze on him, Irvin turned his head to look at her. Caitlyn gave him a lopsided smile. She could almost feel it. She was soooo fucked.

Second time Caitlyn was caught by Irvin looking at him was later that same night. Caitlyn had been pretending to drink all night but hadn't actually had a drink because she kept reminding herself that tonight was work. Only work. As much as she wanted to enjoy it, she couldn't because in the back of her head was always the fact that in reality all of it was false. She was there to investigate her family. None of it was real. However, when all that was over and exploded in her face, Caitlyn would vividly remember moments like that, moments where almost everything seemed normal.
After Irvin and one of her friends from college had challenged her to a game of beer pong, she was paired with one of Irvin's friends, Jai. The man looked like a grizzly bear but at least they weren't losing because secret assignment or not, Caitlyn was incredibly competitive and she wasn't going to lose a game of beer pong. While Jai took the ball out of one of the beer glasses and took a sip, Irvin high-fived his friend, which caused two things: one, his shirt rose slightly, allowing her to see the beginning of his stomach, and abdomen; and two, Caitlyn involuntarily licked her lips and bit her lower lip. Irvin turned his head to take the ball that Jai had managed to throw into a cup on the other side of the table, her fake not-so-fake boyfriend gave her a wink. She rolled her eyes. Yes, that knot she felt in her stomach did not bode well.

Sleep habits were something Caitlyn didn't share with Irvin. Although she didn't complain about being able to sleep in from time to time, the truth was that it was highly unlikely that she would even be able to achieve it. The military and, well, life, had given her more sleep disorders than Caitlyn liked to admit. Mainly some anxiety problems that involved tossing and turning in bed or having to go for a run at 1AM to get tired and finally sleep. Generally speaking she didn't share a bed with anyone, not even if she was having sex but with Irvin it's not like she could run out the door. The first few times she tried to stay awake as long as possible but eventually tiredness would get the best of her and she would fall asleep. Caitlyn was sure she had probably kicked him once while she was asleep and a couple of times she woke up because he was hugging her from behind, almost like he was holding her down or something. Irvin had never talked about it so she hadn't either. Mainly by talking about it did it mean that she was somehow interested in what Irvin thought or she felt and whatnot? That was a fucking problem. She was up to her neck in it and was screwed because Caitlyn couldn't even project how her life was going to go on after her assignment was over.
Despite having slept well, Caitlyn woke up feeling like she needed to run away. She had to do something before she lost her fucking mind. She had never felt this way about an assignment before but Caitlyn had also never broken the first rule like that. The day was cloudy but she went for a run anyway in an attempt to calm the anxiety that was beginning to gnaw at her insides. When she returned, Irvin was still sleeping and she allowed herself to look at him for a moment. His hair was all messed up and his lips were parted. Irvin was lying face down hugging the pillow, even under the sheet Caitlyn could make out the outline of his ass. As if he felt the weight of her gaze, Irvin turned and began to move away from her before opening his eyes to give her a sleepy look. "Good morning, sleeping beauty." She scoffed, giving him a small smile.
(4)
Having spent so much time in the military, Caitlyn was almost certain that she was completely immune to the testosterone radiating from the male specimens. Since she was almost always the only woman in her unit, Caitlyn was used to seeing bare abdomens, men covered by only a towel after showering or when they had just finished training sessions. However, all this belief was shattered the moment she saw Irvin in the gym. Whatever hormone was activated when a woman found a man hot had been activated in her brain. None of what she was feeling was false.
In the name of all that was good, she didn't know a man could look so hot just drinking water but damn. Irvin had something-she-couldn't-explain while he drank from the fucking water bottle. He didn't seem to know the meaning of wearing a damn t-shirt either. Irvin was training shirtless and with his sports shorts hanging dangerously on his hips, so much so that Caitlyn was sure that if she tried to look closely, she would be able to see the beginning of his pubic hair. To make matters worse, as if she weren't already on the verge of a heart attack, he had the nerve - unconsciously because he hadn't seen her yet - to try to wipe the sweat from her forehead with his own shirt. of her causing her abs to contract. If the Army hadn't taught her self-control, Caitlyn would have moaned like a horny teenager. What the hell was happening to him? Each time that assignment became more complicated. She had to compartmentalize her feelings, just like she had been taught. Just when Caitlyn was ready to turn around, he seemed to notice her presence and turned his head to look at her. She swallowed hard. Busted.
(5)
One of the things she had learned most quickly about Irvin was that he liked to dissociate as much as he liked crowds. Caitlyn had noticed that he liked to listen to music, he would just put on his headphones and ignore the rest of the world until he was ready to return to his usual fluffy self. She had also discovered that he was practically an open book, something that for the purposes of her assignment suited her perfectly, although lately Caitlyn had begun to have these second thoughts about the betrayal she was committing. It wasn't like she owed Irvin anything but those feelings weren't normal for her. Work was work. Just another assignment.
It was raining outside and apparently Irvin had had an argument of some kind with James because when he got off work he had called her to see if he could come to her place. Well, technically it wasn't her place but her cover but obviously he didn't know that. By the time he had arrived at her place, Irvin was far from his bubbly-golden-retriever character. Although in order to have new information for the case Caitlyn should have pushed him a little to find out what had happened to his brother, she did not do so. She just let it be but still, every once in a while she would take her eyes off the hockey game she was watching on TV to look at Irvin, who was pretending to read some work-related document. She could hear how he echoed the music in her ears. Probably later when he went to sleep she should take a look at those papers, see what exactly they were about and if it was related to the case. On one of the occasions when she looked away from the TV to look at his, Irvin raised his head to look at her almost as if he felt the weight of her gaze on his. Caitlyn tried to give him what she tried to be a reassuring smile. He smiled shyly back. Everything was perfect, like calm before the storm.
