Listen, I don't want to make it look like protecting one's anonymity online isn't fundamental and imperative, okay, but Lyde's the 4th person I became online friend with then got the chance to meet face to face, and I am not regretting it any more than I did the previous times (I am however delighted and so thankful 🫶).
It's a wonderful thing to be able to turn a long-distance friendship, if I may say so, into an in-person one even briefly, and I wish the experience on all tumblrinas 💛
spent the morning with @mure-sauvage and she didn’t try to murder me even once, would recommend 🫶

Whisper of the Heart really has it all...perfectionism, imposter syndrome, soulmates, cats, the struggle and skepticism that comes with pursuing the arts, outgrowing your love of reading, bicycles, the aimlessness that comes with entering a new chapter in your life, cliffside antique shops, the mundanity of student life, escapism through imagination, libraries, feeling you have to reach an impossible level of accomplishment before you’re worthy of love, and it’s all set to Take Me Home, Country Roads

Lyde my dear,
I've just watched Whisper of the Heart for the second time (which is the first time since knowing you) and I'm rolling on the floor in my feelings from how sldkjfhdlbsh this movie is, so would you like to share some of your own thoughts about it, please ??
Mûre my dear🤍
I just noticed how I tag all my whisper of the heart posts as “my movie” as if it’s a new tag every time worhwiebjrr. Yes past Lyde it is my movie sidhdjfn
I think it’s a movie with a unique energy in capturing wanting to be a writer, an artist, and a moment in time where you realise that that desire clashes with the other realisations you’re developing about how the world works. It’s about growing up, but most of all about artistic vocation, without… pretences? Fanfare? It’s not [Oppenheimer score while the main character furiously scribbles on their notebook] [bombastic realisation that this is what Life is All About]. It’s slow and takes its time, it’s focused and has such a specific vibe. The fact that the og lofi girl from youtube study with me videos is a screenshot/redraw of the main character is not a coincidence I think*. It also has such a cute love story, I love love love the two of them.
There’s a personal element to my connection to the movie of course. I was so similar to the main character at her age. I remember watching the DVD on my birthday and my cousins hating me because it was too slow of a movie yet I was just elated an uncle had bought me the dvd.
There’s so much I can say but I have to go so!! Last thing! This movie retroactively hits harder also because the director died way too soon, he was supposed to make so many more projects with the studio and you can imagine the kind of masterpieces he’d have created with the vision he had and his unique sensibility. It’s kind of bittersweet how a movie about the beginning of an artist’s journey fits into the director’s and the studio’s history.
*i am only 99% sure abt this ill admit

“Wait, there are people blaming the writers?”
Are you surprised? Fandoms have become notorious anti-writer spaces. Studios love you guys. They can cut the budgets, cut the number of writers, cut the wages of the writers, and you guys always blame the writers. “The writers ruined the show!” It’s never “the studios ruined the show.”
I hate to break it to you: more than half the shows you complain were “ruined by the writers”, were ruined by the studios. Studios cut the scenes and arcs you were excited for. Studios cut the budget of the show, or even raise the budget of the show and force a “bigger, louder, bolder” tone on shows that were unexpected hits (this is where we get “the Netflix look” on every show post-Stranger Things and Queen’s Gambit).
You guys do not do your research. Half your fanfics are tagged with bad faith digs at the writers, when a few searches would reveal how strapped that show was and how poorly the writers were treated. Writers are being given a 10 weeks to write 10 episodes. How are good arcs and scenes supposed to happen under that time limit, with a max of only four writers?
Tumblr, the self-proclaimed “pro-union, pro-worker, pro-artist” site is also a major fandom site. You guys rarely practice good faith consumer etiquette for television and film writers, because your fandom salt always turns you against writers. And studios love you for it.
Yeah, individual writers do create bad writing from time to time. But so do painters, chefs, and musicians. Directors and actors sometimes refuse to film certain scenes or follow a show’s projected style and arc, and the writers always get the crap for a bad performance or a poorly directed episode. This isn’t to blame actors or directors; it’s to point out that you guys have one villain, and it’s always the writers. You guys never give writers the same grace you give animators, designers, directors, actors, composers, and editors.
Studios love you every time you say “the writers ruined the show.” Every single popular fandom is guilty of this. View any of the “why did the writers cut this scene, they hate my characters” talk when leaked scenes hit the internet. Writers barely get paid for what they do write. You think they’re writing scenes and then happily throwing them in the shredder? You guys just eat the talk that studios put out. Always have.

Violence set to happy music will never get old to me. Blood splattering to an 80s pop song is like a sister to me because I'm not allergic to fun.

I KNOW I am mono-thematic but you cannot (you CANNOT) deal with wesper in full without showing how Jesper had a big crush/infatuation for Kaz that is soooo messy considering what kind of future & life kaz represented for him. Like Kaz calls Jesper Jordie in the heat of the moment, Jesper is haunted by his betrayal of Kaz’s trust for so long in the books, you need that groundwork!!! It takes Jesper time to realise he needs to change and he needs support, someone who can see him for who he is, who encourages him to work on his talents while also accepting his lifestyle and limitations. Kaz can’t be that for Jesper and he never was but it’s such a big part of his story. Kaz is the bastard of the barrel but also that who offered Jesper a job. Wylan is the new variable in the established game that puts Jesper in the position of the knowledgeable criminal yet Wylan unravels Jesper’s barrier with the type of patience that actually unravels me. Jesper has no eyes for Wylan for basically the entirety of SoC. Wesper is not as blaringly excruciatingly slow burn like Kanej is but hell they are human and messy nonetheless. It is not a straightforward romance not when both have such interesting and developed backstories

I will simply NEVER shut up about how each of the Crows have a parallel character who then foils them in other ways.
Nina and Jesper are both outgoing, flirtatious characters who struggle with addiction. However, Nina's addiction was something she induced to save herself and the others, and something she knew she would have to fight to overcome. On the other hand Jesper spends most of the books in denial of his addiction, and it has dire consequences (Inej's stabbing and his father's farm being put at risk.) They are both Grisha, something that has had a devastating impact on both of their lives, however, Nina was able to grow up learning to harness her powers and Jesper was taught to fear his instead.
Matthias and Inej are both faith-driven people with strong beliefs. However, where Inej's beliefs have made her stronger and positively guided her decisions, Matthias' have made him full of hatred and eventually lead him to his death. Their respective romances cause them to go against part of their beliefs, or, in Matthias' case, completely unlearn the prejudices that he used to justify through his beliefs. They also both arrive in Kerch a captive and spend their first few months there imprisoned in some way.
Wylan and Kaz are the only characters who grow up in the same country, and while their class differences mean they begin their lives in very different ways, this does not stop them from arriving in the same place. Both of their stories in the Barrel begin with them narrowly escaping death, dragging themselves out of a canal and simply making the decision not to die no matter what the cost. Morally they are starkly opposite, with Wylan being the only Crow to blatantly confront Kaz on his actions and motives throughout the series. They are both quick-thinkers and good liars. By the end of Crooked Kingdom, Wylan begins to match Kaz' intelligence when it comes to 'criminal mastermind' thinking. They are also the only Crows who subvert expectations from their own POV, making you think they've failed when actually that was the plan all along. (They also have the same number of 'WANTED' posters in that one scene in CK.)

When I’m an old lady I’ll still be informing young people that Halloween never existed in this country until the 90s /early 00s when people who sell us stuff realised they could use it to sell us more stuff, and Halloween-themed stuff suddenly appeared in shopping centres without warning and was relentlessly marketed to children, and adults saw right through it and disliked it (“what’s this American sh*t, why are there pumpkins and witches in shop windows this never used to be a thing”) until they got used to it and young generations grew up thinking Halloween had always been a thing here even though kids born just a decade earlier had to be taught about it by the TV or school. Also it trampled over our pre-existing Fun Cultural Event When Kids Get Dressed-Up which had never needed to be marketed so aggressively and therefore became less relevant
I don’t mind at all if you love Halloween but it’s so weird to see my younger cousins convinced that it was always a thing in France when I remember being taught at school what trick or treating was, like “let’s learn about cultural traditions that are exotic and fun and different from ours!!” and I’m not old. Millennials literally saw Halloween get astroturfed into our culture with no explanation when shopping centres just went “from now on this is something we’ve always done” and we had no choice but to be like well OK I guess 🤷‍♀️

God could you IMAGINE having to live in Hawkmoth's Paris? Your weird aunt brings her grape, pickle and mayonnaise gelatin delight to Thanksgiving and you have to choke that shit down bc if you don't she'll get sad and you risk her turning into Jello Queen who turns buildings and people into gelatin monstrosities? Some creep at the bar wants your number so you give him a fake and when he tries it and it fails he gets pissed and becomes Great Chad who storms around Paris giving everyone he touches a hangover and bad taste in music? You have to walk on eggshells around everyone while trying to maintain some semblance of inner peace so you don't become Human Resource, who goes around telling everyone what their coworkers really think of them and writing people up so they follow your will. Meanwhile you've died 7 times and been erased from existence twice because of the bitchy teen daughter of the mayor intentionally antagonizing everyone she comes in contact with. You see Sheryl from accounting spill her coffee on her new white suede jacket and just silently check your email to make sure your lawyer approved your latest update to your will in case this is the day those two high school vigilantes get their ass handed to them for real. I'd move.

A Jeanne d'Arc cameo was the very last thing I expected from Ephémère yet it's the best thing to come out of it

I can't articulate it properly but something something about ephémère in French also being the name of a very short-lived butterfly/moth species, something something Adrien as Ephémère collaborating with Shadowmoth unlike Chat Blanc who simply went berserk, something something Gabriel turning Adrien into Shadowmoth's son by akumatising him as such
