no other websites go so hand in hand, its all kill or be killed out there but when ao3 takes a little nap tumblr loses its mind thinking its best friend is gone forever. this happens every single time. it trends #1 for server maintenance. never gets old.

Hey you know what's super funny about the idea of "good bi rep"?
For a character to be canonically bi you have to make sure and establish that they're attracted to multiple genders. Not all mediums allow you to get inside every character's head or show what they're thinking. Flirting can be read ambiguously, and god forbid they flirt with a character who's not into them and be read as pushy or predatory. So it can be super handy to just mention an ex or two! But you better not mention too many exes because that would make them a slutty bisexual which is (checks notes) bad, and you definitely better be careful about making them poly, because that might make them, uh... greedy. Oh, and those exes? They better be perfectly amiable breakups with no conflict or drama, because it's bad to represent queer people in toxic or abusive relationships (especially queer women! very bad), and you definitely can't have them have lost a partner if the partner was queer because that's "bury your gays..." You should probably also eliminate all trauma from their backstory, just to be safe. You should probably also make sure they're not involved in crime, deception, or anything of the sort, because that would make them "deviant" and a stereotype.
But don't worry! Once you've carefully crafted your nice, monogamous, experienced-but-not-too-experienced Lawful Good bi character, you will be rewarded with your audience deeming them "boring" and quickly passing them over for other characters. :)

This is my opinion but I personally think that Jun Wu wouldn't have destroyed Hua Cheng's ashes even if he had them, just in the same way he knew where Xie Lian's parents lived but never made a move to kill them.
He always made a point in never do things too directly actually. He was more the kind of person who would set some dominos and let the fun happen by itself.
He planted the fake family, but didn't influence everyone's decisions.
He made the plague but didn't make people act like they did.
He created the crisis in the temple but the 100 people made a choice on their own.
Mu Qing left in his own, Feng Xin too and of course his parents decided to leave too by their own.
It's not an act of benevolence, but more like he's constantly testing his ideology, that everyone leaves, that people in the bottom are nasty, that nothing is worth saving.
So ofc Hua Cheng would be part of that constant testing, he has to leave in his own, killing him and making him a martyr wouldn't make his little theory any good, neither forcibly trying to push him away from Xie Lian doing this or that.
It's twisted just in the way Jun Wu is twisted, but it's also very interesting. This kind of antagonists are everything but boring.

I cannot believe I forgot that Xie Lian's "god-pleasing warrior" costume in the parade is meant to represent Jun Wu. Holy shit.
Xie Lian is literally introduced to us not only dressed as Jun Wu, but acting the part of him in a performance, and his costume is topped off with a full-face mask. When Jun Wu later tries to force Xl to become him, to act out his deeds while dressed as him, mask and all, he's asking him to so for the second time. Because everyone agrees that Xie Lian and Jun Wu's lives as crown princes are perfect parallels. Pre-ascension Xl fits perfectly into the narrative when Jw tries to cast him as himself, and so Xl wears his beautiful costume and mask in the parade.
The question of book 4 is whether Xie Lian will follow Jun Wu's path post-banishment, with donning the costume and mask of the White No-Face as a symbol that Xl is becoming Jw. Xie Lian wears the older crown prince's clothes and mask when their stories fit together, and Jw can once again cast Xl as himself when he gathers the souls of Xianle's army to unleash the curse.
Then Xie Lian's path diverges from the original crown prince's. He doesn't fall completely down the path of hatred and isolation, and for the next 800 years, he trades out all the masks and Jun-Wu costumes for a bamboo hat. Even better, when Xie Lian eventually defeats Jun Wu, he does so clothes-first. The emperor's beautiful armor is shattered, and the rest follows suit.
Xl even gives his old god his bamboo hat in the end, reversing which one of them's costuming who. (and notice how the mask is something to hide behind or deceive with, whereas the hat is simply something for protection).
The thing is, Xie Lian was never quite so perfect a parallel to the Crown Prince of Wuyong as everyone thought. Xie Lian played him in the parade, and he played him perfectly, but then Hua Cheng appeared, and Xl abandoned his role immediately. He lept from the stage and his planned path in order to rescue a common person, losing his mask in the process, and thus showed his true colors to the world.
Xie Lian may be similar to Jun Wu on the surface, but for the past 800 years, even from the first pages of the book, the things that have set him apart have been Hua Cheng and his unending devotion to saving the common people.
That's Xie Lian's true face under the mask Jun Wu puts on him.

I know like everyone is taking about the casting of Annabeth as black, which I'm more than ok with. but ever since she was cast, I know we've all seen the blatant racism, but I've also noticed art of white Annabeth (still a valid interpretation) or white cosplayers are getting flooded with comments along the lines of
"this is EXACTLY how I pictured Annabeth"
"this is MY Annabeth"
"the true Annabeth"
we all know what you are trying to communicate even if you aren't saying it diesctly. stop it.
and for everyone who is saying "I'd be just as upset is they casted a POC character as white!" I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and say you would.
but those characters race is important.
for representation.
for their background
it's important that Leo is Mexican because his grandfather went to a school for colored children, where he met Hazel.
it's important that Hazel is black because of the culture shock she gets when she comes to the 2000s in terms of racism.
it's important that Frank is Chinese because it is how he is decended from Neptune.
it's important that Piper is Cherokee because she carries all the lessons and parables she got from her uncle with her throughout her story.
it's not important that Annabeth is white because the only thing important about her appearance is that people underestimate her because of it. you know a demographic that is often disrespected and underestimated for their appearance? black people, especially black women.
Leah Jeffries is not a "diversity hire" and it absolutely disgusting behavior to say she is. she is a twelve year old girl who already has an acting career and worked hard to get where she is.
Leah, i can not wait to see what you'll do with Annabeth.
