hello! I just came across your blog and I really love your work! 💛✨
I was wondering - since Sandy sends dreamsand to basically everyone on the planet, how would he deal with lucid dreamers? Especially ones that sometimes have nightmares?
Would it literally be a battle where Sandy and Pitch are in the same bedroom, both of them fighting to make the dream good or bad? How would the sleeper react - would they twitch a little, or toss and turn? Going off of another headcanon here: can Pitch see the nightmare the same way Sandy can see the dream?
That could also beg the question: who is really in control - Sandy, Pitch, or the sleeper themselves?
I’d really appreciate it if you did something on this! Thanks so much 💛
Hello friend!
I can only imagine you sent this in an age ago and I am so sorry for making you wait so long for a response, hopefully this comes as a welcome answer to you, out of the abyss of time that are my hiatuses. I am glad you enjoy my head canons, I can only apologise for them haha. I hope this one lives up to any expectations you had.
Tumblr media
I think lucid dreamers are a whole other kettle of fish for Sandy. While I do believe that the realm of dreams is something Sandy can enter at will and just as easily as stepping through a door since he can fall asleep on cue. Maybe he spots lucid dreamers roaming around places they shouldn't be or doing things that he has not weaved into his dreams.
He does not take any offense to these people though, if anything he is more likely to admire their work and what they're doing. He never ceases to be amazed at humans and their creativity so while he was definitely surprised when he encountered the first lucid dreamer just wandering around he only turned all the more fascinated and amazed at the dreamers of Earth and that they too could walk freely in dreams as he could. He takes of note of who the lucid dreamers are though and makes a special effort to ensure that despite their lucidity, they are still getting proper rest.
Sandy will probably happily watch a lucid dreamer as they go about their business in the dream world. Maybe even taking inspiration from a few of their ideas. He is not human, sometimes he misses things. Who knew that people apparently not dreaming about phones was a thing? Not Sandy! At least not until a lucid dreamer pulled one out.
However, as your question alludes to, it may not always be fun, smiles and mischief for lucid dreamers. While Sandy does try his best to protect them, the world of dreams is a dangerous place. I do think Pitch can see nightmares the same as Sandy can see dreams. I imagine it is easier for Pitch to change a lucid dream into a nightmare, he need only whisper enough fear worthy things into a lucid dreamer's ear and that blissful adventure can quickly turn into a horror.
In such cases and where Sandy is not already out distributing dreams, if he can see or sense a dream becoming corrupted he will rush to wherever it is the lucid dreamer is suffering and yes, attempt to battle Pitch in the bedroom of the sleeper to convert the nightmare back into a dream. Sandy will always try to soothe a sleeper back into a nicer dream, hoping that whatever horrors Pitch has unleashed will be easily forgotten by the lull of sleep, he will do his best not to wake a dreamer. Pitch on the other hand wants to scare someone awake, and try and have the final image of his horrors imprinted on their mind so they can't forget it. This creates quite the impasse.
Sandy and Pitch will fight it out in that bedroom, yes very likely causing the dreamer to twitch and toss and turn in their sleep as their dream switches between comfort and nightmare as one tries to keep them asleep and the other to scare them awake. Sometimes Pitch wins, sometimes Sandy wins. However the difference is that Sandy is a presence that attends every night. No matter how determined Pitch is, Sandy will always be there every night and every time that person falls asleep, ready to fight and chase away the Nightmare King and the little Starling is relentless and eventually always wins.
That could also beg the question: who is really in control - Sandy, Pitch, or the sleeper themselves?
An excellent point. I do believe for lucid dreamers, Sandy at least creates a safe almost 'base' dream for them to enjoy, like putting them in a park or a fancy castle, but leaving the rest of the creativity and actions up to the dreamer themselves as that seems to be what they relish, he's also probably learned that lucid dreamers do not follow his weaved stories and can often go very far off track where everyone involved is confused. So he simply tries to put them somewhere safe and let them loose. Sandy does not seek to control these dreams. When Pitch corrupts these dreams, he is trying to gain control of them by manipulating the dreamer. So Pitch himself is never actually in control of a lucid dream, he's more steering the sailboat without being able to predict the wind. His aim is to instil enough fear to wake them up- and no doubt cause more fear in the waking world.
The lucid dreamer has a lot more control over the events of their dream but they also cannot fully control it when Sandy and Pitch are battling in their bedroom and both entities are trying to steer them one way or the other. Sandy tries not to steer but to prevent a nightmare taking hold, he is for sure going to do his best to push a dreamer back into the sweeter side of dreams.
In the end for lucid dreamers, it may be whoever genuinely has the most power that night. Sandy will leave them be once the nightmare is chased off, Pitch will of course linger until Sandy turns up and the lucid dreamer may even get to decide either way themselves. Dream or Nightmare, maybe even in a dream it can come down to one seemingly insignificant action or another. Maybe the fate of these battles is determined by which the lucid dreamer inadvertently sides with, making the fight two against one.

Idk if you’ll see this but you ok? I only just recently discovered this blog and I’m really like your headcanons and your writing but it’s been over a year since you’ve last posted according to Tumblr. If you’re inactive or not working on this blog anymore then that’s ok, but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to ask.

Dear Anonymous Friend,
Apparently I can be summoned. But I see it has been over two weeks since you sent this message in. I hope you will still come across it if you're watching the blog. I am very pleased that you like my whacky, sometimes very cruel headcanons, I am always so happy when I learn someone else enjoys them and the blog. I can see the likes, reblogs and comments on them and they do always make me smile. Especially when I come back after yet another of my long hiatuses, cheers me right up. Love getting messages like this too, my night has been made by just a few minutes of your time <3
This blog tends to hibernate as you might have noticed but does on occasion wake up with a stream of head canons scattered about and made up as I go along before I inevitably vanish again. Sometimes, like tonight, I get an urge to sign on and poke at this old blog.
Thank you for taking the time to check, and I really hope you are having a wonderful evening and in sticking to the Sandy narrative, I hope you have a peaceful sleep with only the best and sweetest of dreams as company.

And that’s it for the queue for now friends, I’ll no doubt be back soon enough with more thoughts to throw your way as and when they come and I want to make sure you are sufficiently topped up on one feel or another <3

Sandy is a frequent visitor to the Tooth Palace, he usually visits around the time Tooth and the fairies should be preparing to sleep. It’s something of an excuse, making Tooth sit with him for a tea or some cake politely makes her sit still for a few minutes so that when the time comes for him to ease her into a dreamy sleep, she won’t just be dropping out of the air!
This became a frequent occurrence, enough that Sandy and Tooth share a great deal more about themselves and their incredibly busy day to day lives with each other than they’re able to with the others.
Sandy has always been sure to wish her a goodnight just before sending her off to sleep, a little warning but also a friendly promise that she can rest and dream and indeed have a good night.

One Easter when Bunny had really pulled out all the stops and pushed himself that bit too far, he started to find eggs shaped out of dreamsand in the places he was moving to hide those last few that remained in his basket. Annoyed, he threw one behind him to replace it with his own.
Upon turning around he found himself face to face with a happily snoozing Sandy who had his own dreamsand sprinkled over his face where the dreamsand egg hit him. In an amused huff Bunny no doubt tried to wake Sandy, who is not really affected by his own dreamsand but bought too much into his own joke that the sleepy little fellow did actually nod off in those few short moments.

I think Sandy likes cats. They can look comfy wherever it is they decide to sleep, they understand the importance of napping and their sleepy purrs are comforting even to him... Yup he likes cats

On Christmas Eve, right before North starts his journey, Sandy will make doubly sure that the children of the first destination are sound asleep. It is a challenging night for him as they are so often full of excitement and sometimes just full of sugar but he manages.
Sometimes, on very, very rare occasions when he hears a Christmas wish he simply cannot answer on his own, he allows a sleeper to only dream lightly so that they might hear North and speak with him, believing that he is wise enough and kind enough to put their worries at rest or at least explain the world to them that Sandy in reality has very little true experience of.

Sandy will frequently race Tooth’s fairies when he spots them, something of a little game between himself and them as they go about their work.
He will often help them if they must collect a tooth but there is someone wide awake and waiting to catch the Tooth fairy! A quick sprinkling of dreamsand and the waiting child drifts off into a safe and peaceful sleep and Tooth’s fairies are free and safe to collect the teeth and leave their coins behind.
Sandy will absolutely wait for the fairy to finish in the room, offering a high five before taking off again for his own work.

Sandy is the only guardian that interacts with adults. He will send them dreams just as he does to the children. It is in part because he has always sent them dreams and thinks they would simply not understand if after one night they never dreamed again. He also has a whacky perception of time too and a 101year old person is still so very young compared to him!
In addition to this, dreams are extremely personal. Sandy has had decades of an elder’s life to get to know them from the first time they fell asleep to the last. He knows who they care about and what they both fear and love the most. Every dream Sandy sends is a message as detailed as a handwritten letter and deeply private, as dreams cannot be shared and most dreams are forgotten shortly after waking, locked away in the subconscious.
Sandy speaks to every dreamer on Earth every time they sleep, he watches them grow and knows how best to soothe them into an eventual sleep.
In the Warren, Jack asks when was the last time the Guardians actually hung out with kids. Sandy is gone by that point but hey, for him it was the last time any one of them fell asleep.

Arguably he could, if he sends dreams and communicates with all living things I would say that mushrooms fall into that category. He is not the sort to leave them out either, mushrooms after all have a wide variety of jobs and benefits they perform, even in the grim sense of decomposition.
There are studies on trees in forests that suggest that fungi actually help to send messages between them as if they live in tandem with each other. There is a pun that it is a network like the ‘Wood Wide Web’ which they believe actually mirrors the neurons in a brain. It’s a fascinating topic and I highly recommend reading up on it.
But I digress! Yes, any and all living things on Earth, I think Sandy will interact with. :)
What do you think?

Sandy has been caught numerous times having a full blown conversation with potted plants. Especially those that find themselves as the only plant around. He knows they talk using roots and when potted, he worries that they get awfully lonely so he is sure to talk to them in what ways they understand as he drops off dreams for them.

Sandy absolutely sends Pitch dreams if ever he detects him sleeping near by. He makes them the absolute happiest of dreams too, filled with colour, smiles, even merry music. Some might believe it is Sandy doing only what he knows to try and help even his worst enemy enjoy a good night’s sleep.
In reality though, Pitch Black is the only dreamer Sandy will torment, he knows exactly what he is doing and it is something of a taste of his own medicine meant for the Nightmare King.

In the past, as a joke, Sandy once waited for North beside a fireplace on Christmas Eve. When his friend arrived, he found Sandy in a dreamsand top hat and monocle, sipping away at the eggnog left out for North and covered in crumbs from the cookie he could not resist eating.
North was at first startled to see him, fell back against the Christmas tree with a loud yell and woke everyone up in the house. Sandy frantically managed to put everyone back to sleep and did his best to put the tree exactly as it was before. North did laugh at least but Sandy never did it again.
Although North has noticed that a few glasses left out for him have been emptied before he gets there.

Sandy was the hero of ten thousand battles, to have survived he surely had to be the victor of 10k battles with the dream pirates, successful in preserving the Golden Age and all who dwelled within. It is fair then to say that he was not only famous but revered by the innocents of the cosmos as a hero, dashing and brave, their protector and a true warrior of near legendary proportions.
We can consider if the people’s of the Golden Age are anything like us, such heroes of their time end up with monuments to their victories, people name their children after them, sing songs of their heroics and tell stories around their legends transcending them into a different sort of immortality to never be forgotten.
Imagine the outpouring of tributes, songs, stories and monuments made out to Sanderson Mansnoozie after he finally falls in the formidable battle with Pitch Black above the terribly young and uninhabited ‘Gea’. Lost to all who loved him and of course, presumed dead as the Golden Age crumbles.
Keep that in mind as I point out to you that time is funky in space, we look at stars that could be long dead for how long it takes for the light to reach Earth from the other side of the cosmos. Perk of a starling too, I believe, is that the vacuum of space is not a silence to them as they need to hear the wishes of the worthy as they fly by in their stars.
Millenia pass and Sandy wakes on Earth and learns that all of his friends and those he strove to protect are long dead. However, when he listens to the silence that Earthlings gather as the sounds of space, Sandy hears the laments, the legends told by others about him, sees the monuments in the stars in tribute as the lights fade out over the years.
It is not a glorification, instead each time he hears them he is reminded time and time again of his failure to protect them in the end while he slept on Earth and makes him all the more ferociously protective of the beings that are left and determined to preserve one last piece of the Universe he knew in guarding Earth and making it his final battleground.
