This is exactly how i feel about s&b.

I watched Shadow and Bone with my bff (who hasn't read the books) and this is the conclusions I arrived after + some of her comments.

Warnings: my friend has some negative strong opinions on the show and specially Malina, if you are not comfortable with it, I'd recommend you to avoid this

The Show is thought to be watched as a book fan.

Even if it looks cool, having Alina summon little suns can be confusing.

Malina is cringe

Alina's only character trait is being the sun summoner

Holy shit they are going to kiss

Genyalina for the win

The crows are cool but didn't fit with the story

Aleksander is more of a hero than Alina

Ok, to begin with, she had a lot of trouble keeping up with the geopolitical situation, I had to draw a map for her and keep reminding her every now and then about what country does this and that. Not to talk about the Grisha orders: chaos in a nutshell.

Which takes us to the next point. The special effects in Alina's sun summoning. The Fold sequence was very cool, the sunbeams against the dark fold was badass. But then, the little suns she summoned with Baghra? My friend could not understand what separated her from an Inferni.

Malina is cringe. She kept screaming in pain and second hand embarrassment the moment they start writing the letters.

Has nothing else of interest happened between them since that day in the meadows or what?

I think that quote sums it up tbh. That moment in chapter 3 or 4 when they show us all of Malina's relationship so far before she forgets him had her moaning in pain

Yes, yes, thank you, we remember, it was three chapter ago. Fucking Hell

After Alina runs away, my friend literally forgot she existed while watching the crows scenes, and she proclaimed that she had nothing worth remembering, except the 'light thingy'

Also, she had to watch the argument between Alina and Aleks when he rescued her from the Druskelle at least thrice because she thought they were gonna kiss.

Those two want to fuck each other in real life. There is no way they are such a good actors. The chemistry is too much

While I think this affirmation is a bit too extreme... yeah, I believe their chemistry is the best in the show. Note that she said that when they were just talking on their way to the first demonstration of sun summoning for the king.

Also, she fell in love with Genya the second she was on screen and ships Genyalina because even if the Ben+Jessie chemistry is great, nothing compares to sapphic stuff.

The crows are cool as fuck, and they were her favourites, but at the beginning she believed them to be the bad guys because of the 'we have to kidnap Alina' thing.

Luda is pretty as hell

One thing that made me think was how, when Aleksander and Alina are arguing in the tent, my friend could not understand what was he doing wrong.

Overthrowing the corrupt government is literally the heroes job wtf.

Note that she also sympathized with Alina when it came to the collar thing, but not too much because again, she didn't care for her that much.

Bonus points for her not believing Ben Barnes eyes are that dark and asking at least ten times if he was wearing contacts.

Oh, and the keftas are ugly as hell, only Aleksander's were salvagable.

Overall her favourite characters were Genya, Kaz and Jesper.

After watching the show with her I've arrived to the conclusion that one, the crows should not have been there, two, there is too many information all of the sudden, three, the Darkling did nothing wrong, four, Genyalina is the winner.

On second reading, I realized how goddamn courteous the Darkling is, and how paranoid Alina is since the beginning. Long before Baghra comes to slut-shame her against him. So, here are their interactions, full of “manipulation” and *checks notes* “grooming”, also known as well mannered, surprisingly kind general baffled by his potential equal’s issues:

Let’s start after the tent scene. When he saves her from drüskelle- the end of chapter 4.

He doesn’t leave her alone, makes sure she gets away from traumatizing scene, he even helps her stand up.

Hi everybody. How are you all doing? I hope everything is alright.

I haven't been active at all for the past few weeks. I guess i needed a break from the grishaverse fandom. And during this break, i was able to clear my head and focus on myself and my goals more.

I also came to a sad conclusion. I don't know if i should feel sorry or sad for it. But i am no longer interested in s&b as much as i was before. Which is, for me, a very good thing.

The toxicity in this fandom messed me up too much. Everytime i would come in the darklina tag, to feel safe about my ship, i would end up angry, uncomfortable or feeling anxious because of some hateful posts. Same goes for instagram.

I can't do it anymore.

That's why i am leaving the fandom. Not completely leaving, but i'll just stay in my own bubble, apart. It's for the best.

I might be too sensible. But i just prefer to leave before matters get worse. I also have many things i should focus on.

What saddens me most is that i met great people in here. And i will keep in touch with them, because i adore talking to them. They are why i will never regret joining the gv fandom.

I might post from time to time, idk. And i am sorry for this abrupt message.

"Darklina is a problematic ship, and the shippers are even more problematic." To whoever wrote this with the essay that came with it (and tagged darklina 🙄), and to every person in the gv fandom, let's get something straight. Writing paragraphs about how darklinas (shippers) are problematic, AND purposely tagging 'darklina' to piss them off is waaay more problematic than shipping a fictional ship, whether it is toxic or not (i mean in general). Refusing to acknowledge a LOT of mal's toxic behavior, just because you like him and don't like the darkling/darklina while constantly talking about how toxic the darkling is (which is completely true, i agree) is more problematic than shipping darklina. We are always asked to realize that the darkling is toxic, which we do, but when we bring out mal's bad behavior, he becomes an angel. (^^^In the above, i am talking about antis, not malina shippers). Immediately claiming that a person is toxic because they like the dynamic of a toxic *fictional* ship, and hurting them by saying it to their face (that happened to me more than once) is more problematic than shipping darklina.

Saying that darklinas are a 'desease' is more problematic than shipping darklina. Ignorently saying that darklinas are racist, ab*se apologist and anti feminist without weighing the consequences of how hurt they could be is more problematic than shipping darklina. Using delicate terms such as "gr00ming" and "p*dophilia" without understanding their real meaning is more problematic than shipping darklina. You don't like the ship, that's more than understandable, but leave the shippers out of it. Because while a few darklinas that i do not support are seriously problematic and toxic... (like i got into a little argument with them), the majority are the nicest and most supportive people in the fandom, from my personal experience. Don't judge someone because of a ship.

EDIT: telling darklinas to "go to therapy" is more problematic than shipping darklina. Claiming that we need therapy or/and psychological help when you don't know us is so disrespectful...

Hear me out. I might understand antis commenting under a darklina positive post when it is in the sab tag, or other tags excluding malina. I don't agree with it, and i find it negative, but still, it's something they don't like and they comment on it. Let's go with that.

But being an anti, going in the darklina tag, AND purposely spreading negativity??? That's suspicious as hell lmao.

My last post was only tagged 'darklina' and 'anti darklina bs' (anti darklina bullsh*t in other words. This tag is darklina positive), and yet, they commented under it. Some sh*tty comment btw.

At this point, i'm not sure i want to stay in the fandom. It has been getting out of hand, and i don't need that anymore.

I don't like doing posts like this, but its been getting so out of hand that I can't stand it anymore. Stop putting other people down because you don't like what they do, more specifically, a ship. What do you get out of it? Like seriously. It honestly makes me think that you're so unhappy with yourself that you go after other people and their likes to try to make you feel better about yourself. It's so unbelievably angering that there are actually people who do this. Newsflash, this ship in particular is fiction. That's right. Fiction, something that isn't real. And guess what the ship is labled as. Enemies to lovers (and then back to enemies). Gee, I wonder what that means. Maybe the fact that they act like enemies towards each other, because they ARE enemies. Like listen, nobody (hopefully) is forcing you to like the ship, it's your life and you can like what you want, but this is the way you should act to other people as well. I swear, we learned this in elementary school, yet somehow it has been forgotten by grown ass adults. Treat others how you want to be treated. It's honestly sad that this has to be said over and over again to not only children, but to adults. As someone who is still young, it makes me so unbelievably sad that it seems I have more common sense and decency then a good amount of older people. It's just so frusturating. You don't know what people may have gone through or are going through. This ship (or anything really) could be helping a lot of people out in ways you don't know, and it's absolutely appalling that they are being called "a disease" just because they enjoy something that is not harming anyone.

Please learn and do better.

Sorry if I got a bit heated, but this is something that needs to be said (unfortunately many times). Remember, you don't have to like something if you don't want to. Your opinions are valid, just like everyone else's.

I do not condone any attacks on these people or anyone else.

Oh and u forgot to mention. They were in the darklina tag.

For me, the only reason they tag darklina is to bother the shippers, most likely disturbing them or ruining their mood/day.

THIS behavior is more problematic than shipping a fictional ship, but ofc they wouldn't know that 🙄.

I'm kinda proud of that. Before, i would reply to justify myslef. Now idgaf. What they said is mostly wrong and i won't bother with them. It's useless.

Even how Darklina and Malina argue is completely different. When Alina argues with Mal it's basically childish squabbling and includes her throwing stuff. When she argues with Aleksander it's always about a real issue, and regardless who is right or wrong, she stands her ground and eloquently states her point. She acts like a grown woman with a bone to pick and not an annoyed little girl.
