oh i figured it out. Swanny is basically like the people on tumblr who think they're Intellectually Superior because they've read Harry Potter and drink tea, only she actually is intelligent but speaks in a way that makes it sound like she's using big words to overcompensate for something. if that makes sense

"Dad says we have to name him Duncan Humphrey Ripple the Sixth, but I like Jutt better. I don't even know if it's a real name, I just like the way it sounds. Jutt."
That's some Hank Venture sounding shit, I love it. Ripple is an idiot but I think I've decided that I like him now

Oh by the way, I read nonfiction and poetry too, but I probably won’t be posting about that here. So if you happen to add me on goodreads and wonder why I’m reading a nonfiction or poetry book but not talking about it here, that’s why.

The very best writing tip you will ever hear is this:
              Analyze stories.
Don’t just listen to what other storytellers say you should do, figure out what you like about the stories you enjoy and learn to replicate that.
Want to learn about pacing? Examine stories you think flow fantastically. Want to learn about description? Study your favorite author’s descriptions. Want to learn about characterization? Critique your favorite characters.  Want to learn about foreshadowing? Explore how it’s done in stories where the plot twist blew your mind.
Storytellers giving advice to other storytellers is fantastic and useful, but you will never know something as thoroughly as you know the things you figure out for yourself.
And by analyzing the stories you love instead of listening blindly to advice, you’ll never be swayed by the bias of other writers and you’ll never take in advice that’s suited for a story you wouldn’t enjoy writing.
So put on some thinking caps and go analyze those stories.

I think I’m going to start highlighting quotes I like while reading, then go back and gather them all up at the end and queue them up on here because everyone loves quotes, right? And there are some really nice ones in this book. The writing is so lovely

Notes from reading last night, possibly spoilery. Cut for length because I ramble a little bit.
I feel bad for saying this but I don’t really like Swanny? But I think it’s because I’ve already been made to be sympathetic towards Abby. Like on a rational level, yes, I understand Swanny being pissed that her arranged marriage fiance is fucking some other girl (who Swanny doesn’t seem to realize is feral and doesn’t know she’s involved in an affair or even have a concept of what an affair is) but her personality is just unpleasant. I was warming up to her a bit when she and her maid would bond over shitty things happening to her mom, but now that she’s in a different setting, I don’t really like her.
Osmond (Ripple’s uncle, or great uncle, I don’t know, he’s old) is a weird old dude and I am here for it. I didn’t really like him at first because of his rather misogynistic comments towards Ripple’s mother, and don’t get me wrong, he’s a dick and I am not excusing or forgiving that, but he’s an entertaining character.
Feel even worse for Katya (Ripple’s mom) now. Humphrey, Ripple’s dad, still has Christ Parnell’s voice in my head despite looking nothing like him. Also I hate him now. Humphrey, not Chris Parnell.
I feel bad for Ripple now, too. I still think he’s a spoiled rich asshole, but no one has taught him how to be an adult and instead of teaching him to grow the fuck up, his dad is like ‘well let’s just make an arrangement for him to marry a competent woman so she can take care of all of his finances so he doesn’t piss away the family fortune’. It’s implied he did terribly in the economics portion of school, and possibly in the other areas, but with all their fucking money they didnt think to hire a private tutor?? No? Just go ‘oh well, the boy is an immature idiot and that will never change, guess we have to make all of his major life decisions for him and then let a woman he’s never met marry him and take it from there’.
And like, poor Swanny, because yeah I don’t like her, but she’s clearly intelligent and put together, but she’s being condemned to have to put up with this man child forever because her mom wants to secure her a part of the fortune rather than like, a husband who will actually be an equal in the relationship and take some responsibilities. Oh yeah, and her mom is awful. I’m not even gonna get into that because that’s a whole post on it’s own and this is already getting long.
More and more uncomfortable with Abby being involved in any sexual activity. She doesn’t even know what a video is. She’s also being constantly traumatized because she thinks the house she’s in is full of robots that want to kill her, and no one seems to notice that she’s in a state of shock.
Oh yeah back to Ripple or a second. I don’t think he even wants to grow up, because he’s used to being spoiled and coddled and never having to do anything. His friend who did well in school offers him a job in The East (very vague but his friend’s surname is Chinese, I think, so probably this universe’s version of China) and he’s like nah, fuck that, it’s boring there and I don’t want to move. Despite the fact that the city is falling apart and there are two fucking dragons circling overhead who burn shit down without warning. Good luck, Swanny.
Slightly more interested in Sharkey now that I know about his ‘ability’. That is probably a spoiler, so I won’t be specific. But now i want to know what that’s all about.

why does Swanny have so many teeth! is she a shark woman. is Sharkey somehow her father even though he has been in a prison colony his whole life and also Swanny's father is allegedly dead and died of an unnamed illness. also Sharkey is just the dude's last name, I've been given no other reason to associate him with sharks but like, that can't be a coincidence that Swanny has fucking infinite teeth right??
also who is narrating this? I'm now 17% into this book and just realized it's being narrated in first person pov but the narrator has yet to appear in the novel themselves. who are they and how are they so omnipotent.
oh and i officially do not like ripple's dad or swanny's mom

ALSO. The writing style in general is wonderful and I love it. It’s sort of poetic without being overly flowery (or ‘purple prose’ I guess) and annoying and it’s also super engaging. I want to write like that

Okay, so I’ve already been reading The Sky Is Yours by Chandler Klang Smith for a couple days but only just now started this blog, so here are my thoughts so far (I am 10% into the book according to my kindle)
I do not know how to feel about Ripple. He’s like an 13 year old in an 18 year old’s body. He’s described as physically attractive but I cannot be attracted to someone who speaks and behaves Like That. I think that might be the point though, so good job I guess.
I love Abby! But I am suspicious about her age. Allegedly 18, but she was around to see the barges stop showing up at the dump, and Ripple (I think?) said they stopped running 40 years ago so...
I think Abby is from the same country as Ripple’s mom. I’m just guessing, from Ripple talking about how Abby is super hot despite being a literally feral trash woman, and how Ripple describing Abby’s boobs as perfect happened in the chapter immediately following the one describing his mother having to have absolutely perfect measurements to be allowed to join the ‘modelling agency’ (I forget what it was called, I read this last night).
I like Ripple’s mom. I don’t really know what else to say, I just like her and I feel bad for her.
I have no real opinion of Ripple’s dad beyond typical rich cishet dude. But every time I read him, he has Chris Parnell’s voice.
I don’t really have much of an opinion on any of the other characters yet.
Possible spoiler? I do not like that Ripple fucked Abby when she probably didn’t even know what sex was. Even if he didn’t force her or anything, it just was a little. Uncomfortable for me. She’s fucking clueless about everything because she’s literally feral, so it was just kind of weird.
I tried to keep these thoughts somewhere between vague and specific. Like vague enough that they’re not super spoilery but also specific enough that if anyone has already read this they know what I’m talking about.

New Bookblr
Or is it booklr? I don’t know. I don’t know what any of book tumblr’s tags are.
Hi, I’m Ozzy and I made a sideblog to talk about books. I used to read a lot when I was a kid, but fell out of it a bit in my teen years. Now that I’m getting serious about my writing, it’s lead me to start reading regularly again, and I want a place where I can talk about it without spamming my goodreads updates every five minutes.
A little bit about me: I live in the US, I’m trans and nonbinary (he/him), bi, polyamorous, white, and I’m an adult. I’m autistic, disabled, and mentally disordered. I have an art degree that I do not use. I’m currently writing a novel, and I’m getting into the habit of writing short stories. My main blog ( @rnoonlightink ) is my writing blog.
I’m not entirely sure what my favorite genres are. I’m just getting back into reading and still trying to figure that out. I’ll basically be liveblogging my thoughts and reactions to books I’m reading, but I’m not sure I’ll always write a proper review at the end. Also don’t expect my liveblogging to be lovely and eloquent, I’m not trying to impress anyone I’m just shouting into the void about my feelings.
Also, most of my books are ebooks, (usually borrowed from my library) so I probably won’t be posting many pretty aesthetic photos of like, books and coffee and pristine white bed sheets. I’m sure everyone would quickly get bored of me posting a picture of my kindle and coffee cup on my desk or bed every day. So expect few original Aesthetic posts from me, though I will reblog them from others.
I think that’s it, really! I’m not sure what else to say.
