Hetty must have spent so much of her afterlife thinking about things she would have liked to have said and done for her son. No wonder she handled Isaac coming out to her so well for a woman who died at the end of the 19th century. She must have already had a version of that conversation hundreds of times in her head.
Oh I know...it's kind of like what they say about people who jump off bridges especially, how they regret it quick, and I think Hetty definitely went through that. She had a lot of pain and she thought dying would end her problems but in a sense they just created more cause she still had so much life to live and she didn't get to be there for her son, etc. But at least now she's getting her second chance, it seems: getting a redo of Thomas and the coming out conversation with Isaac or just being a parental figure with Sam, etc. It's funny because even though Isaac is technically older than her, she does sort of treat him like her gay son I mean like especially with the way she was encouraging him to bring Nigel to the prom and the Halloween party and all these things...and just in general how invested she is. I mean yes, Isaac is her friend and she did it for that reason but I think there's a little bit of "This guy is the same age ish as my son and I want him and his boyfriend to be happy together" as well.

I can't wait to hear your take on this most recent Ghosts episode---I haven't been too enamored with this season so far, but this Hetty-centric masterpiece immediately became among my top two or three episodes of the entire series! I even loved every Flower scene, and I was never much of a Flower scene :) This episode also showcased Sam, Isaac and so many others at their best!
I agree that it's very high up on the list of awesome episodes. I love how so much of it was showing what the ghosts could do without Sam and Jay present and it was just awesome. I enjoyed the ghosts just interacting with each other immensely and I do want more. It was perfect for this episode to be the one where Flower came back because she definitely brought some much needed levity to the episode to contrast with Hetty's story. I also loved how they had her be completely serious and "there" when she thanked Hetty for saving her and revealing her secret to do so. It's so sweet and I really hope it's a step forward in their relationship. They're a strange pair but I loved what she gave Hetty re the washing machine and I hope Hetty can help her out about something.
I thought the idea of Isaac, Sas, and Thor being stuck in the hole to have them out of the way so the reveal of Hetty's COD would be a surprise to *everyone* was a *little* on the contrived and convenient side, but I will forgive them if we hear more about Patience the Feral Puritan Lady, cause that was funny. (Although I suppose I AM glad that Thor didn't have to watch Hetty end her life. If he remembers the relationship that they had when she was a little girl as fondly as he does, I'm sure it really would have hurt him to see her die.)
And of course, my last non-Hetty thing, I know we all suspected that it was Ralph who got sucked off when we knew it wasn't Flower, but...the way they were all "It really WAS *just* a Cholera ghost who got sucked off after all!" made me smile. (Also I wonder what Stephanie will plot now that she's lost Ralph?)
And now...on to Hetty. I've suspected for a while that she would meet a sticky end because of Elias, so it wasn't a complete shock to me, but sad nonetheless, to the point that when I was told how she died, I literally had to take a day and just get ready to watch a character i love and who is clearly sad and lost, end her life. It was so sad that she felt she had no one to turn to before she died, but it makes me even happier that she has everyone at Woodstone to give her the care and connection and love that she didn't have when she was alive. I think we can all be glad for that.

I know that the big thing we think about re this last episode is the sad stuff with Hetty and of course but here's what I found funny:
-Sas telling Flower not to engage with Patience if she found her (and her being referred to as a "feral Puritan lady.")
Isaac's sneezing once again ruing things for someone (Of course he sneezed when holding his Eyesaac and that's what made him shoot Nigel, and the second time makes him let go of Patience.)
-The fact that since Ralph was the one who got sucked off, it really WAS a cholera ghost after all. Pete was right!
-Just the way Hetty talked to Reginald and her being like "Take all the bullets for me" and he's like "All right!" (it was kind of half-hearted like he wasn't super ride or die but it was still enough to be a little silly to me.)

It is so sad that because of, you know, the lack of phones and Hetty using the fact that she had one of the few phones, the thing that can be someone's salvation usually (you know, pick up the phone, reach out and talk to someone) was a tool for her end instead.

And I gotta say, even though I'm sorry for Stephanie, it was funny after how the cholera ghosts all took offense at first, it really did turn out that a basement ghost got sucked off after all.

Not that I don't love Sam and Jay (because I do...they're my babies.) But I love that this episode was mostly the ghosts doing their own thing. I want to see some more of that. (And just Jay, possibly with Bela, and the ghosts. Lots of combinations besides Jay and Sam.)

If you run into a Puritan, she may be feral at this point. Do NOT ENGAGE! -Sas
Poor Patience, oh my gosh. But a very fitting name.

I have to say that even though Hetty's death method wasn't what any of us expected (I suspected overdose either as murder or suicide cause drugs are SUCH a part of her character) it didn't feel weird when it wasn't because you could tell a sense of lost hope for what she could have had is also a part of her character (and I know she wasn't trying to make a splash or anything but using the telephone cord is obviously such a "rich person" way to go since that was obviously a big thing for the time...sort of like the spider that bit Kitty coming out of the fancy pineapple in BBC.) So it was a way of subverting expectations without just plopping down something completely out of nowhere to surprise people and I think more writers need to learn how to do that when they get dismayed about fans of their shows knowing all the twists and turns.

I feel like more people should know about the Filipino phrase bahala na si Batman. quite literally, it means it's up to Batman. on a more figurative level, it means that you're leaving something to God/fate - metaphorically represented by Batman, of course.
big event that you haven't prepared for but you're going anyway? bahala na si Batman. major exams coming up and you haven't reviewed yet? bahala na si Batman. about to do anything remotely risky/luck-based? bahala na si Batman.
anyways, I just think it's hilarious that Batman is now a part of our culture through this saying. is this a thing in other cultures/languages too? let me know!
