Yup. When you're looking for a job, it sure does not feel AT ALL like there is a crying demand for workers by desperate employers. And it's not just young people getting the runaround because they "don't have sufficient experience". You pass a 'certain age', and those desperate employers suddenly go from concerns about your lack of experience to "concerns about your ability to cope with the fast pace/lifting/physicality" or whatever other bullshit they can come up with to fob you off. I've come to the conclusion that their ideal employee is precisely 35 and not a month more or less, and is someone who they hired and trained 10 years ago to do that exact job but who left on sabbatical for a month and now wants to come back for 3/4 of their previous payrate.

“Nobody wants to work” yet im over here filling out 3945867483293064359469 applications on 500 different job hunting sites, each application demanding i take a 30 minute-test to PROVE that me and my paltry resume are worth a multi-million company giving me 16 whole dollars an hour. Nobody wants to work yet 97 of the 100 applications you fill out just ghost you (because when a Boss does it, that’s just how it is. But if you ghost? Unprofessional.) or give you some pointless runaround for 3 weeks until telling you you’re not a good fit because you only have 3 years of dick-sucking experience and they want 5. Nobody wants to work? Nobody wants to invest in employees. Nobody wants to hire, nobody wants to train, nobody wants to teach anyone new skills. Nobody wants to accept that YES, some people DO work to collect a paycheck and thats FINE, not all of us are born with a passion to be a Starbucks Manager. We’re all passionate about living and supporting ourselves and I wish bosses would stop being so lazy and rude and give my friends jobs for $20000 an hour

I have been way under the poverty line my entire adult life, meaning "welfare dependent" under the poverty line, albeit in Canada. I have ID. I have always had ID.

You are issued a birth certificate when you are born, then your parents use it to immediately apply for a federal Social Insurance Number (which you'll need for multiple things, including to work and file taxes) and your provincial/territorial health insurance card. Any official addressed mail (from an employer or the government etc) can be used to prove your current address. I have had a driver's license for decades and when the U.S. began to require it to cross the border, I got a 10 year passport.

You have to have some sort of ID to do ANYTHING.... apply for welfare, get a job, open a bank account. Hell, you used to need ID to get a membership at the video rental store. Everyone poor who wants to live a remotely normal life has ID. People who don't bother to get ID don't want a normal life, so they probably don't care about voting either.

I get that much of the U.S. is less "nice" than Canada, but I know for a fact that you get issued a birth certificate too, and that there are charity AND political organizations in the U.S. that help people get IDs.

Liberals who say this, that poor people or people of colour don't have IDs and don't know where to get them, are either deliberately disingenuous or bigoted, elitist assholes living in a bubble world.

And, btw, EVERYONE in Canada must show ID to vote in an election at ANY level of government, even local city council elections.

Showing up with an ID is a test that has already been corrupted, by requiring it and then mandating ID that are expensive and time consuming to acquire.

As far as I’m aware, that’s just propaganda. I had more trust for such criticisms 10 years ago.

91% of US households have access to a car, and driving one requires a license, which is the typical form of ID in the US. I’m fine with the state subsidizing IDs though.

Are you fucking kidding me??!!

I'm one of the teachers quitting and people like this are the LAST people listening to teachers.

They're the first people lining up to demand we teach whatever ridiculous activist-driven idiocy comes down from the ivory towers on high.

They're the first people to force us onto the front lines of the culture wars, and demand that underpaid civil servants take one for the team.

And they're the first people to incite the mob that comes for us when we're insufficiently "woke" to whatever progressive diktat was just invented 5 minutes ago.

As with people on the Right so with people on the Left, "listen to teachers" and "respect the job teachers do for society" is always contingent on teachers advancing their agenda.

The Real Reason Teachers Are Quitting

There’s a war being waged on America’s teachers,  and we must stand up for them before it’s too late.

Teachers watch over America’s most precious asset — our children. 

They dedicate their lives to caring for our youth, serving as role models, and making sure that future generations are set up for success.

So why on Earth are we treating them so badly?

Our nation’s teachers are not only working long, demanding hours inside and outside of the classroom — but they’re blamed these days for almost everything imaginable.

They are yelled at by parents over masks, reprimanded by school boards about books they assign or let their students read, vilified by politicians for teaching honest lessons about America’s history of racism and genocide, even told to arm themselves against the possibility that their classrooms might be invaded by murderous young men with semi-automatics.

Teachers are also making less money than they were ten years ago. Their average salary today is around $66,000, but when adjusted for inflation, that’s a $2,000 pay cut compared to 2012.  As recently as 2018, nearly 600,000 public school teachers had to work a second job.

We’re also saddling our nation’s educators with huge debt. Nearly half of teachers, 45%, have taken out student loans to pay for the advanced degrees often required of them — with an average debt load of $55,800. 

On top of all this, 94% of teachers have had to dip into their own pockets to buy school supplies. This, in the richest country in the history of the world! And at a time when the average Wall Street employee bonus for 2021 hit a record high of $257,500. It would take the typical teacher almost four years to make that much — and that’s just a bonus for Wall Street traders — a massive golden cherry on top of their ever-sweeter salaries.  

I’m guessing Wall Street firms don’t make traders pay for their own pencils. 

Are Wall Street bankers really worth so much more than the people we ask to care for and teach our children? P-l-e-a-s-e.

Yet none of this has stopped Republicans from accelerating their war on teachers, and turning educators into political pawns in their battle to advance a radical agenda. 

Since January 2021, 35 states have introduced 137 bills limiting what educators are allowed to talk with their students about – with regard to race, American history, politics, sexual orientation and gender identity.

Governors Greg Abbott of Texas and Ron DeSantis of Florida are poster boys for this campaign, even supporting legislation that intrudes on a teacher's ability to craft lesson plans. 

Republicans are quick to lob the terms “critical race theory” or “wokeism” against any curriculum that allows our youth to express their identities, advances critical thinking skills, and is honest about our nation’s tragic racial history — calling it “indoctrination” or “brainwashing.”

Why?

Because the biggest threat facing the Republican Party is a new multi-racial generation of young people unafraid to speak truth to power. 

Ultimately, if we don’t learn from our history — which often means learning from our mistakes — there’s no way we can tackle our nation’s most pressing problems while building a better, more inclusive future. The foundation for this future begins in the classroom. 

So how can we fight back against this war on America’s teachers?

First, pay them twice as much as they’re earning. Bare minimum. 

Second, fight for their freedom to teach. Many of the decisions that affect teachers' day-to-day work — as well as the lives of students — are made at local school board meetings. So, go to one. Better yet, run for a position on your local school board.

Third, listen to our teachers. Do you know what’s been lost in the cultural and political war against education in this country? The voices of ACTUAL teachers. If we’re going to truly support them and repair the harm done to our education system, they need to be heard.

Defend our teachers. Pay our teachers. Value our teachers. The work they do determines our future.

I studied Linguistics, and sometimes the best way to decipher a person's true attitude towards what they're saying is in taking apart their words and sentences and finding those tiny cues that betray their insincerity.

He was more than happy to call Tim Scott an O*eo. I even think he thought he had the approval of black Democrats to say that, hence his inclination to think the slur was politically appropriate. Geez.

The Woke are to Progressivism what Tipper Gore's 1980s anti-Satanism campaigns against the fantasy genre were to Christianity. The only saving grace of Wokism is that it's a circular firing squad that is imploding itself and it's adherents will get bored and move on to something else. Given that Al and Tipper Gore went from fanaticism about the moral dangers of rock and roll and dungeons and dragons to fanaticism about climate change, and the Muslim world in the last 70 years went from Fascism to Communism to Islamism, the Woke will probably turn into some sort of jack-booted neo-nazis or religious nutters next, which will surprise precisely no one who possesses actual historical and cultural knowledge...but I digress.

If Amazon had got the rights to Tolkien's appendices and written the most Woke Progressive-pleasing, "White people suck" series ever about how the Numenoreans were outrageous douchebags for centuries, who conquered, colonized, ethnically-cleansed/population transferred, and then deforested the entire coast of Middle Earth's pristine old-growth and often sentient forests (and killed half the Druedain who lived in them) in order to build more ships to go conquer, colonize and oppress the shit out of some more people (and that's just the supposedly "good guy" Numenoreans of that time period, and not even the "Black Numenoreans" who actually worshipped Sauron and used the oppression of the other Numenoreans to manipulate all those oppressed people into worshipping Sauron), and then they set that series in Harad, Khand and among the Easterlings and gave it the most anything-but-white-actors diversity possible, every single Tolkien nerd would be awaiting that series with bated breath.

Because, bitches, that is 100% canon.

And Tolkien wrote the backstory in those appendices long before any of the Woke morons appropriated the term "anti-colonialism" from the generations of far-more intelligent and knowledgeable (though still sometimes disasterously wrong) Leftists before them. Ironically, he wrote the entire LOTR series to function as a mythology for the English people, who had lost most of their own mythology due to, ironically, having been conquered and colonized thrice themselves, by the Romans, the Danes, and then by the Normans.

It's a free country and Amazon can make whatever the fuck it likes, but if you mess with the canon of one of the oldest and most beloved fantasy books in the Anglosphere, and then insult the legions of obsessively detail-oriented fans who had a meltdown 20 years ago over the comparatively trifling matter of Legolas running up oliphaunts, then may God have mercy on your profit margins.
