The new information allowed some of the nerves that accompanied her hyper vigilance to abate somewhat - trust the Yaksha to be informed on such matters; so...such things were routine here in Liyue, but those skirting so close to the borders of the Karst were not.

Now that that mystery had been dispelled, her attention shifted - a celebration for the fallen...if she had to hazard a guess, based on body language and tone alone, this Menogias was someone he had known, and perhaps been close to.

"I see...I wont pretend to be informed on this land's complete history, or the tales of its heroes, but...if ever you've the presence of mind to share, I would be honored to learn." the obvious signs of a long, forgone calamity were etched into the very earth of Liyue, masked by a veil of plant life and softened by the progression of time, but still present if you knew where to look.

"It's nothing to worry about." He allows himself to relax just slightly. Just because her concerns are one one topic doesn't mean Liyue as a whole is safe. He can't fault Maggie for being cautious, when he himself is always on guard. "It's something the humans do this time every year, they call it Lantern Rite."

There's a sigh then, as he bows his head forward. "They use it to pay homage to fallen Adepti. I believe this year..." he trails off, feeling a strange lump in his throat. Emotions. Xiao doesn't want to feel them so heavily, not when all of Liyue is ready to celebrate and enjoy themselves. "This year they're celebrating Menogias."

He speaks the name almost reverently. Maggie probably doesn't know anything about the former yaksha, and Xiao isn't one to offer such information freely. Though, if she were to ask, he'd have no problems talking to her about his companions.

"But if you see lanterns in the sky, that's what it's about. Often they'll try to get close to Jueyun Karst and leave offerings. We still cannot allow them to trespass."

"Agreed." she'd never been one to particularly enjoy hot weather, so between Sumeru's humid rainforests, and scorching deserts, it was a small miracle she hadn't found some dark, remote cavern that tunneled deep into the earth and refused to set a single foot outside it; but...for that one detraction against it, the nation had proven itself to be a sanctuary of sorts, where her mind and heart had been given some space to begin to heal, even with the insanity that seemed to perpetually nip at their heels to tear open old scars.

"Mm - probably a good idea; the last time we up and disappeared on her, the end result was a bit catastrophic, and I think she deserves a break from helping the two of us lick our respective wounds." she rose to her feet, taking his hand as she passed and giving it a squeeze; a small gesture to some perhaps, but that she felt safe enough to express even this much affection towards him was telling.

"If the whispers the merchants exchange are true, then there should be Wushou dancing this year on top of the other fanfare."

Honestly, usually he'd suggest they get as far from crowds as possible, but last time they'd gone he'd actually found himself enjoying it...and maybe he just wanted an excuse to have some time with Maggie again. They'd been through hell and back that year, they had come such a long way - yet there were still so many years laid out before them. An eternity in which to make new memories...would she ever grow tired of having him by her side?

"It'll be nice to spend a little time in a different climate too. I may like Sumeru - but the sticky air can get irritating", he frowned slightly, summoning a small breeze to wash over them, the air still warm but at least it was something. Turned out that the summer time inside a rainforest was not fun at all. But it was quiet here - that's what he liked - that and Sumeru now held the majority of the memories that he truly treasured - those with Maggie.

"Alright, lets leave tonight then. Much cooler weather and gives us time to talk with Buer too". It was best they didn't just up and vanish on the small Archon, after all.

"Indeed." her tone was somewhat vague, as though lost in thought as she had already begun to scour over the notes she'd taken, leaving annotations to refer to later; she had to wonder, given what she observed, if the performer's heart was really in this - his smile had a manufactured, mass produced air, his movements were graceful and well practiced, but still...something was decidedly off here.

There was no point in speculating - such a thing would make her no better than a run of the mill tabloid reporter farming for gossip, "I think I've managed to get what I need for now, and gave enough of a public appearance to sate my PR team, so do give your brother and your...charming mother my regards, mm?" she gave the young woman a light nod as she rose from her seat and made her way towards a side door, firing off a quick message for her car to come around for the pick up.

The evening should have ended there, with her returning home to begin compiling what she'd gathered into a proper first draft for the pieces she would create for his collection, her thoughts remaining solely focused on precious stones and metals...so why...why did she become aware of the idol being swarmed as the vehicle rounded the building? ...why, for that matter, did she instruct the driver to pull in close? Why did she open the door, reach through the crowd of screaming fans to take hold of his arm and drag him in to the backseat with her when this was none of her business?

"Go. Now." why...why was she doing this?

He'd still felt a little confused as he parted from Maggie and his sister, wondering to what she might mean - but as soon as he was on the stage, he felt as though he knew what it was. He was used to having the eyes of the world on him, of course, but this time there was extra pressure points from the crown, not just from his mother or manager either. So, she must be watching him rather carefully then? She certainly took her job rather seriously, most of this could no doubt be observed from video alone.

As soon as the music started, he was like a different person, blocking out the world as he concentrated on the act. Fake smiles, singing towards the cameras, acting cute - it was all second nature to him by now, but under the added examination, it somehow felt even more fake than normal, such was the world that he and his family lived within. Still, he was able to finish with no mistakes, Ame cheering rather loud for her brother as he walked off from the stage. "Isn't he wonderful? Oh, do not tell him I said that", she laughed to Maggie, obviously having rather enjoyed the few songs that had just been performed, a glance sent in her mothers direction, but it seemed Ei had already left her seat and gone backstage.

'Okay...lets hurry then - we're going to have to do this while avoiding detection from security, and the cameras so they don't attempt to forcibly remove us; once we find a space to settle in, we should be in the clear once it leaves the station.' she took his hand, leading the way in a way she hoped read as casual to whomever may have been monitoring the feed - there was no guarantee they wouldn't be intercepted, or their efforts thwarted at the next stop.

It was the best chance they had - staying stationary was more or less a death sentence, all but assuring that both of them would be dragged back into that hellscape with no real hope for escape as...they would no doubt take additional precautions to ensure that whatever method to slip through the cracks had been employed couldn't be utilized a second time.

The path to the station felt as though it took hours, despite only taking about fifteen minutes - stress really was a hell of a thing in times like this, pausing only to locate cameras and that night's on duty officers as they canvased the building to navigate them around them safely and into a partially opened freight container, tugging the divine construct along behind her as she guided him with her to a cramped space behind several boxes.

She gave the hand she held a squeeze as she allow her back to press against the cold, unyielding metal wall behind them, waiting for the locomotive to pull out of the station - this was most likely the longest break they would get between now and reaching the shipyard, and from there, they could navigate their way out and into the bowels of the ship, '...rest while you can - this might be awhile.'

Well, she might not have said it, but Hayate’s mind had a tendency on jumping to the worst case possible and he couldn’t help but to frown at the thoughts that were beginning to form. It made sense - the time within the Abyss was different from Teyvats, so it could be the same law as this world, though thinking on such was pretty pointless…he still couldn’t help but to wonder if Buer was out there looking for them, or maybe she was still unaware of anything to have happened. Was the fire under control by now? Had anyone found what had remained of that Dottore? A lot of questions now flooded his mind, making it difficult at first to hear Maggie, Hayate stopping for a second, as though needing to pause to recollect himself.

“Ah”. A hand rest against the side of his head, the constant buzzing really beginning to irritate his senses. If there weren’t a billion cameras on them, he’d have destroyed the source by now - it was still tempting too. A train? Oh, those things…well we used them for transporting between locations in Snezhynaya - it’s rather wise rather difficult to travel in that frozen wasteland otherwise. Still, he didn’t much enjoy those trips - but beggars couldn’t be choosers and for one reason or another he wanted to avoid putting any more stress on Maggie’s shoulders.

Sounds like a plan though if that’s the easiest and quickest way. He gave a slight shrug. He wasn’t looking forward to any of this - especially since it all lead up to riding a ship at the end of it too - but he could only imagine how Maggie was feeling regarding all this too. None of this was much enjoyable, but at least they were in this together, a thought that caused him to scoff slightly as he continued to follow after her. Since when had she made him to soft?

"She may be in the company of the general mahamatra and the acting grand sage, but the later most likely will only act as escorts - if I remember correctly, the general mahamatra saves all of his vacation days to attend Genius Invocation TCG invitational tournaments, and the acting grand sage is a more solitary sort who prefers to preserve his energy."

"The people of Liyue don't know too much about what the Dendro Archon looks like so I'm sure she'll be able to blend in."

While neighboring nations due to Nahida being locked away none have really gotten a glimpse of her. Trade of course is still bustling between the two ports but many only can catch a glimpse when in the city if they were lucky.

"Is she coming alone?" Just the archon herself or perhaps a small group.

He was definitely persistent - she would give him that; either he was overconfident in his fighting prowess, or he just didn't care where his own safety, or freedom, was concerned...such a strange person he was proving himself to be.

"In order - not here, and my father's been dead for decades...so no; all you need to know is if those whom I run from manage to sink their hooks into you...well...let's hope that stubborn streak of yours isn't wholly superficial; it may be the only thing that preserves your sanity."

Slowly the ex-detective made his way towards her, then 𝘣𝘰𝘰𝘱. Gently he taps the center of her forehead with just his knuckles. “Strong silent type huh, well ‘Maggie’ here’s a question that might get me more of a word. “Where’d you come from and why was is it sooo bad that I know who you are? She silently observed the odd energy - it was just skirting on the edge of the young man's footsteps, most likely biding its time; given that he seemed to be veering off path, it was most likely waiting to get him alone so nothing would disrupt it.

There was the option of intervening, but given the very nature of this campus, she wished to see how this young man would react to defend himself; intervention on her part didn't need to be direct, given the nature of her arrangement.

A roar shook the air as the beast finally chose to show itself - a creature that seemed a strange amalgamation of many that could have been born from a child's wild imagination; the only name that seemed to fit being 'chimera'.

'Come now, child...let's see what you're capable of; surely you wont require an old crone's intervention.'

A yawn is given as he heads back to campus, thinking about all the homework and studying he had waiting for him in that room. Maybe he could trick himself - Pretend Trey-kun is waiting for him in there. Not papers upon books of knowledge waiting for him.

Cater looked at his phone though, knowing full well that Trey-kun was busy with some Vice-dormhead shenanigans at the moment.

Bummer.

Oh well. He knew no one would question him too much. And so he turned on his heels and went the opposite way of the hall of mirrors. A little walk wouldn’t hurt.

"You did all you could, I'm sure...some simply aren't content unless they have someone to defer blame on to." she moved to smooth some stray hair behind her ear...only to balk at the line of questioning that followed.

Why were so many so curious as to the nature of their relationship?

"...as well as to be expected - you're not the first to ask that of me." it was faint, but a pink flush had swelled on the apples of her freckled cheeks, "I'm beginning to wonder if the man behind the title has earned himself enough of a reputation that I need be concerned."

The words are soothing, it was honestly what she needed to hear at a time like this, it was very...encouraging. "Thank you, some still see me as the archon and are nice while others still blame me for what happened. It's nice knowing someone else thinks I'm doing ok."

But no more about her moping around.

"How are things with you and the Duke?" It wasn't often really someone caught his eye. Sure the Fortress and the Court remain separated but Furina was always a tad curious about where the criminals went.

It needed to be run by the right person and the Duke seemed to be that man.

//i'm baaaaaaaaaack it's been a minute - a lot has happened in the last month and a half that left me drained and devoid of the energy i usually devote towards more creative things

my grandfather has passed, as as his funeral - it was a beautiful service, and my family got to mourn together my dad wound up getting a quadruple bypass, had an allergic reaction to one of his post op medications, and i've been back with my parents to help out while he recovers, and my own need to be around my family while i both grieve and process everything i had to serve people i once considered friends a notice to vacate - which hurt...a lot...but needed to happen for a multitude of reasons

but...i'm feeling a lot better, and i got a surprise day off, so i'll be cranking out everything i owe both tonight and tomorrow and i am feeling better than i have in a long, long while

i hope everyone is well; i love you all and i'm very happy to be here

The look she gave him alone should be a clear indication of the answer to that particular question - the thought of being in anyone's company made her feel viscerally ill - the mahamatra included; the fact that she was even holding this conversation was making her feel nauseous.

"You're here...aren't you? If you're not including yourself in this line of questioning, then yes...I'm alone."

Having your suspicions confirmed once could be a coincidence. Twice, an educated guess. But this was the kind of answer that turned guesswork into factual truth. Just what the General Mahamatra sought.

"Then it would be in your best interests for this to be the time." He said, cooly. Her inflection was none he'd ever heard before, but her grasp of his language seemed good for the time being. He'd keep it simple for now. "My next question: are you alone?"

to add to the ever growing list, my dad had a cardiac event today and after sending a catheter up his leg to check for blockages, it was discovered by doctors that he had several major blockages…so a multiple bypass surgery is on the docket for Monday

i am not okay but i am trying my best to pretend i am for the sake of my mom and sister

going to be on sporadically over the next few days to distract myself as i am very aware of how little i can actually do in this particular situation…still, i am going to request that people please be gentle with me for a bit as i am hanging on by a literal thread right now
