Does anyone have recs for historical romance books with a fantasy element? I’m really enjoying the historical society with magic genre at the minute (not really sure if this has a name or not!) and loved the Meddle and Mend series by Sarah Wallace and am currently reading A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske

*hitting you with a stick* no benoit blanc movies should not interact. they should not lead up to something. you need to detox from the marvel/sherlock bbc poisoning. they should be completely independent movies (maybe w some cameos/little references for fun) and go on for as long as there are stories rian johnson wants to tell in this universe. i do not want an overarching plot i do not want a team up i dont want a benoit-focused prequel i want some good old fashioned episodic murder mysteries that have nothing to do with each other!!!!!!!!!!! also rian johnson has literally said he's not gonna do a prequel and he wants the movies to all stand on their own

addendum 1: by "marvel/sherlock bbc poisoning" i dont mean that those caused this over-serialization, but i think they are partially responsible for why audiences are expecting it. learn to engage w murder mysteries on the genre's own terms

addendum 2: idc what headcanons you have. i actively encourage you to write fanfic about marta and helen solving crime if you wanna. that is literally what fanfiction is for my guy! if you want to know how phillip and benoit met THAT IS WHY FANFIC EXISTS

"crochet can't be made by machines" went from being a cool fun fact to being a call to action of "so if you see mass manufactured crochet in Target, that was made by a person and they were underpaid and you should boycott it" which is true, it was made by a person, but EVERY item of clothing you own (that you did not purchase from a company using ethical labor) was made by a person being underpaid (at *best*.)

Sewing machines are operated by *people*. Knitting machines are operated by *people*. Yes lots of the process is automated but you cannot tell a machine "make me a t-shirt" or "make me a knit cardigan".

Higher awareness of fast fashion, and the true human labor and abuse behind it, is GREAT, but let's not pretend that the crochet hat in target is THE problem. Every article of clothing in target is the problem. "All clothes are made by people" is the jumping off point here into understanding this issue it's not just crochet it's the whole thing ahhhhHHHHHHHHHH

I cannot stress to you enough, internet stranger, that I don’t know anything about anything, BUT there are definitely videos about the internet’s pirate shirt. I think it was a hit among bored people around the start of the pandemic; it was a hit among me when I more recently decided that signing up for sewing classes is for chumps and the best way to learn to do stuff is to read the sewing machine manual and watch videos over and over.

Anyway, here are a couple of relevant videos:

Bernadette Banner’s video where she makes a shirt the hard way. This is also part of the genre of YouTube video I enjoy where Someone On The Internet Is Doing Something They Enjoy And It's Nice.

I think she puts up a diagram of needed rectangles during the video and some hero in the comments made a neatened up version so you can fill in your own comments and numbers for personal use, but I don’t have that at hand.

This other video by Ora Lin actually is actually billed as a tutorial so there is a little more focus on how you, too, can produce this garment (Banner’s video above I suppose functions reasonably well as a tutorial for some because it’s not an overly complex project, but the video wasn’t made as one)

I like that it is flexible. Use so much fabric for poof and keeping your shirt where you want it (such as tucked into your pants or your skirt that you also make with the help of YouTube videos because signing up for sewing classes is for chumps but just screwing around with an old sewing machine is not I guess). Just do whatever you want! You are free! Destroy some old sheets!

Pros of wearing your pirate shirt you made with the help of youtube tutorials to work:

comfy

you might as well get some use out of it

you look a little like you belong on the cover of a romance novel

you can be smug about your ethically sourced shirt

Cons:

you did kind of a bad job of making it lol

it doesn’t really work with the rest of your wardrobe (but whatever live your life)

you would rather be a heroine on a romance novel cover and you do not have anything near the skill to approach one of those looks
