An outstretched moment of silence fills the room as Tony tries to process Stephen’s admission. A pretty huge problem, one that caused many of their fights in the past, was the mechanic’s inability to see the bigger picture, or to think outside of his initial assumptions. He wouldn’t listen, wouldn’t catch onto the details, nor actual facts that hit him in the face. And Tony was beginning to realize that he was making the same mistake once more. While he was quick to accept Stephen’s rejection ( the pessimistic part of him had expected it going in, even if the hope kept it somewhat quiet ), he wasn’t entirely rushing to see that perhaps the feelings haven’t been entirely erased from the actor’s heart.

“ Stephen, I have to know. You have to tell me, right here and now, because I don’t know what to make of this, ” he begins, words measured and slow, a furrow to his brow and gaze set on a small speck of dust on the floor. It’s a work in progress, Tony growing and understanding the mistakes that he’s making. And lack of communication was one of the mistakes he’s trying to rectify at the very moment. “ Is there a chance for us to be something again? Are we beyond repair; am I wasting my breath and your time here? ” Saying it out loud stings a little, a small stab in his heart. But it’s best to rip it off like a bad-aid. First the pain and then the salve of hope. “ Or do you think that we can fix this? Fix us and just… try again. ”

𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐏𝐇𝐄𝐍’𝐒 𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐃 𝐖𝐀𝐒 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐂𝐄𝐒𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐑𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐋𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒 𝐁𝐄𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐃 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐈𝐑 𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒; it was exhausting but somehow relieving all at once. Hanging his head, he took a few calming breaths as he did his best not to just pass out from everything that happened that day. It was only when Tony spoke again that he felt himself snap awake. Listening carefully, feeling his heart pick up it’s pace as the words he didn’t know he’d been waiting to hear came from his lips. Do you think we can fix this? If Tony had asked that earlier, his answer would have been a resounding no --- but now ? They were talking, communicating properly in ways they never had before. Understanding each other. Was that just because they had been pushed to such an extreme ? Could they really learn to do that just normally ?

“ If I’m being honest, I don’t know for sure, ” he admitted carefully, willing himself to meet Tony’s gaze once more and face him in truth. Sliding over closer to him on the floor, “ But, we could. With some work, I think maybe we could, if he tried. ” Placing a hand on his knee carefully, he took a deep breath. “ I’d like to try. ”

Stepping along with wherever he was led without a shroud of hesitation, Tony keeps his eyes on Stephen only. Call him a complete sap, but he could never get enough of his husband’s beauty, or the aura that rolled off him in waves. It downright made Tony’s skin tingle. “ Something new, perhaps? ” He throws out a guess with a wag of his eyebrows, and a salacious smile.

Concentration keeps on the careful removal of glass; the smaller pieces were mostly removed now, getting to work on the larger ones that were more embedded into the skin. They were certainly going to take more time to remove, and this particular one seemed to be one of the deepest; it’ll hopefully be the only one that needs more than just simple bandages to help heal. “-I don’t really care if it was or wasn’t; but this is the second time I’ve had to do this; really should be careful near windows.” A minor hint that his tales don’t quite serve to be as believe able to her as they may be to others.

If it hadn’t been for the fact he was focusing heavily on ignoring the discomfort of the glass, he may have even grinned. “ It’s been one of those weeks unfortunately. Still, this should be the last window problem I have for a bit. So that should be good news for the both of us. ”

𝐇𝐄 𝐅𝐄𝐄𝐋𝐒 𝐄𝐗𝐏𝐎𝐒𝐄𝐃, vulnerable even --- and it’s not a feeling he’s particular fond of or went out of his way to gain experience in. however, when it came to gaea... when it he thought about all they had been through in the last couple years, it was easier than he imagined it would be. almost freeing in it’s own right. they had been through war, loss, pain --- so much pain. many times it felt like he would have given in to the darkness that encompassed them all if he hadn’t had her. if someone asked him when this happened; when he began to love and trust her the way he did --- stephen wouldn’t have been able to answer. all of it bled together as if it was the only thing he’d ever known and it had just taken him time to recognize it for what it was.

stephen’s eyes did not waver from hers as he took a few steps towards her. a gloved hand outstretched towards her and taking her hands in his. “ shhhh. ” he attempted to soothe softly, “ you--- well, you don’t need to explain fears like that to me. i know them all too well. ” he admitted, a little bit of force behind his words in order to make the confession leave his lips, despite his anxieties best attempts to hold them back. “ i am ready for whatever you are willing to give me. whatever i am a fortunate enough man to be allowed, because ...i love you. ” @inaceae
