It was 20 years ago today :: Billy Boyd joins the Young Dubliners onstage at the House of Blues on 17 March 2004, St. Patrick's Day, in West Hollywood. In appropriately hooting festive attendance and shades of green were Dominic Monaghan and Sala Baker, plus friend Lauren Ambrose.

It was 20 years ago today :: The One Party :: The lights of my life embrace and are embraced by an extremely happy horde of fans. We were treated to an unlikely serenade from Dominic Monaghan going Supersonic, a rather more likely serenade from a rollicking Billy Boyd thrilled that we'd let us get lucky with him, some sweet and gently spicy Q&A from Dominic and Elijah, and massive, rousing ovations for Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and the rest of the LOTR creatives who'd come to party with us reprobates as well in the end. I've written thousands of words about this night elsewhere, so I'll keep it (relatively) short here and say that it was a crowning event for so many and so much; the love in the room was surrounding, electric, and so very special. By no means was it the End of All Things, because neither any of those who'd worked to make these films what they were nor any of those who'd loved every moment of them would've wanted that, or could let it happen. There is something to be said for being eternally bound in friendship and (Spontaneous, Violent™) love.

It was 20 years ago today :: The lights of my life embark on one hell of a night of their lives at the Academy Awards on 29 February, 2004. More posts to come today on the awards themselves, the parties, and the Party, but Concerning Hobbits on The Return of the King's Oscars red carpet were of course Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Billy Boyd, and Dominic Monaghan, resplendent in Valentino suits, smiles, smirks, sometimes sunglasses, and the odd feather boa.

It was 20 years ago today :: A pack of merry pranksters hits the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards on 22 February, 2004. Representing The Return of the King from the cast were Billy Boyd, Sean Astin, Liv Tyler, Andy Serkis, Bernard Hill, John Rhys Davies, and John Noble. ROTK won Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture (joining the cast onstage were producer Barrie Osborne and Robert Shaye from New Line Cinema), but the real winner here was clearly the kilt seen round the world, eye-catching enough even for Liv Tyler's helpful attention in the press room. Liv also presented the film's reel at the show. Following the awards, the cast tumbled into the post-show swag section for some happy exhausted hijinks. A lot of photos here, yes, but only to honour what was truly one of the silliest, most special evenings of ROTK's awards circuit.

Today is a big day on the Spanish internet. Valentine's day in Spanish is "día de San Valentín", which sounds almost the same as "Sam va lentín", which is how, in some parts of Spain , you would say "Sam goes slowly".
Hence, since a few years ago, every February 14th, the Spanish internet is full of "wait for me mr. Frodo" style memes. One of our holiest days of the year.

I turn 30 next month so here’s what I learned in my 20s:
—don’t work for startups, they’re always one ‘innovative idea’ away adding ‘sell your kidneys on the black market’ to your job description.
—keeping a collection of basic OTC medicine on you will save your life one day. I recommend Advil, Imodium, and TUMS.
—those little single-use glasses cleaning wipes are 1000% worth the money
—overly self-depreciating jokes just make people uncomfortable, wean yourself off of them
—you can buy dehydrated mini marshmallows in bulk online and they’re a godsend for hot cocoa
—people don’t care if you have fidget toys on your desk they just want to play with them
—try to go to bed BEFORE the existential ennui kicks in
