Some of my favorite words and phrases to describe a character in pain

coiling (up in a ball, in on themselves, against something, etc)

panting (there’s a slew of adjectives you can put after this, my favorites are shakily, weakly, etc)

keeling over (synonyms are words like collapsing, which is equally as good but overused in media)

trembling/shivering (additional adjectives could be violently, uncontrollably, etc)

sobbing (weeping is a synonym but i’ve never liked that word. also love using sob by itself, as a noun, like “he let out a quiet sob”)

whimpering (love hitting the wips with this word when a character is weak, especially when the pain is subsiding. also love using it for nightmares/attacks and things like that)

clinging (to someone or something, maybe even to themselves or their own clothes)

writhing/thrashing (maybe someone’s holding them down, or maybe they’re in bed alone)

crying (not actual tears. cry as in a shrill, sudden shout)

dazed (usually after the pain has subsided, or when adrenaline is still flowing)

wincing (probably overused but i love this word. synonym could be grimacing)

doubling-over (kinda close to keeling over but they don’t actually hit the ground, just kinda fold in on themselves)

heaving (i like to use it for describing the way someone’s breathing, ex. “heaving breaths” but can also be used for the nasty stuff like dry heaving or vomiting)

gasping/sucking/drawing in a breath (or any other words and phrases that mean a sharp intake of breath, that shite is gold)

murmuring/muttering/whispering (or other quiet forms of speaking after enduring intense pain)

hiccuping/spluttering/sniffling (words that generally imply crying without saying crying. the word crying is used so much it kinda loses its appeal, that’s why i like to mix other words like these in)

stuttering (or other general terms that show an impaired ability to speak — when someone’s in intense pain, it gets hard to talk)

staggering/stumbling (there is a difference between pain that makes you not want to stand, and pain that makes it impossible to stand. explore that!)

recoiling/shrinking away (from either the threat or someone trying to help)

pleading/begging (again, to the threat, someone trying to help, or just begging the pain to stop)

Broke: The 'I knew all along about your magic, it's stupid that you're afraid' trope

Woke: the 'I just found out about your magic and I made the unconscious but split second decision to love you anyways' trope

Bespoke: the 'I just found out about your magic, and it's going to be an adjustment. I love you but my feelings regarding Sorcery and Magic are biased and complicated as it has caused me much personal pain and fear. However, I must face the reality that I am either wrong about two things: You are a good and honourable person whose loyalty knows no bounds, or Magic is unequivocally evil. Obviously, as you are Merlin, I know which one I am right about. Arthur is granted a wish.

After years of obliviousness, Arthur has grown an awareness for how blind he is, so he wishes to be able to see people for who they really are.

That's how he begins to see people dressed differently than before. He sees servants dressed like people of the court, he sees closeted people finally representing as themselves, he sees his wife with an eternal crown over her head.

And then he sees a man walking into his rooms. His face held high, his eyes golden. His face and hands are scarred all over and Arthur knows it's emotional scars. But the man glows, his clothes that worthy of a king, no. A god.

Only when the man opens his mouth and pulls away the curtains, does it dawn on Arthur whose in front of him.

Favorite thing that came out of the Merthur fandom is the idea that Arthur just accepts Merlin's incompetence to such an extend that he has to reshape the entire servitude around it.

Arthur at the beginning reveives complaints about Merlin daily. So Merlin ends up in the stocks.

After that it's just:

Arthur: is this a complaint about Merlin again?

New servant: again? So he's done it before? Then you understand. Sire, he is always late, he disappears whenever we need him, he's way too friendly with the nobles and sometimes even rude and -

Arthur: yes, yes. I'm sorry for the inconvenience. I'll get you a new servant to balance out his wrongdoings

Servant: i beg your pardon? Sire, he's insolent and a loudmouth and -

Arthur: and I like him that way. He's got my permission to be like that. God knows where this kingdom would be, if Merlin didn't make me question my life choices. Don't tell him I said that!!!

Servant: are you serious? Are you... Are you worried about his opinion?

Arthur: you should, too. He basically makes the law at this point. ... Don't tell him that either.

Servant: *gobsmacked* you're the king!

Arthur: I just do as I'm told. . . Don't tell the knights.

Servant: your highness, he is just a servant!

Arthur: oh no. YOU are just a servant, no offense. He's MERLIN.

Servant: ...

Arthur: ...

Servant: god, i should have listened to cook.

Arthur: Do you believe in destiny?

Merlin: I believe in you, don't I?

Arthur: oh, wow. *stutters* I didn't think that would work

Merlin: what would work? You're literally my destiny. A dragon told me. That doesn't mean I like it.

Arthur: oh... Yes, of course. I understand. ....

What do you mean a DRAGON told you?

Speed dating, with Merthur:

Arthur: i'm sorry, you're not really my type, you can go.

Person A: ... Yeah. Let's not talk about this ever again.

Arthur: what? Why? I thought it was going well, otherwise? Did I do something to offend you?

Person A: well, first of all, there is this guy *points behind Arthur*

Merlin: wait, is this my fault? I can leave.

Arthur: what? No. You can stay. It's fine.

Person A: actually, I think he should sit down on my seat.

Arthur: what? Are you nuts? It's Merlin!!!

Merlin: yeah! What the hell!

Person A: well, I mean, we had 30 minutes to get to know one another and you spent 25 of them talking with Merlin. The other 5 you spent telling me about him.

Arthur: ...

Merlin: ...

Person A: I interrupted you several times, but you wouldn't stop.

Arthur: ...

Person A: 4 people warned me about you, I was just too stubborn to listen. Maybe, you two should go and ... *Waves* talk about this thing between you.

Arthur: there is no thing between us!!!

Person A: *getting up* maybe it's about time then. *Winks at Merlin*. *Leaves*

Merlin: *caughs* now... That was strange

Arthur: yeah, why does everyone keep saying that?

I want Dragonlords to have their hearts on the right side, like dragons do.

Arthur: OH MY GOD! Merlin! You got stabbed in the heart!

Merlin: Haha, no.

Arthur: ???

Merlin: Unlike you I have my heart on the RIGHT side.

Arthur:

Arthur: You are still bleeding profoundly.

Merlin: Yes, please get Gaius.

For as unreasonable Uther is at most times, he has a lot of patience for Merlin. He'll constantly say things about how he is just a servant to Arthur. But he knows, and shows many times, that to Arthur he is so much more than that.

He knows who Merlin is first of all, specifically asks him on more than one occasion about Arthur, sees him generally as some sort of authority on Arthur and his well-being. And not in a way he'd just expect of a manservant.

Uther gets mad at people for simply existing in his presence quite frequently. But when Merlin speaks out of turn, he usually just sighs. Like he knows he can't really do anything to Merlin. Arthur would never let him. And he's not stupid, he knows that Arthur can beat him in a fight. He wouldn't risk it. So Merlin gets away with so much. And not just from Arthur, but with Uther too.

If Merlin was honest, he didn’t planned to be arrested by the Met the day Arthur finally returned, but here he was…

Arthur: so, it's my birthday today. And for that I wish to be kissed by all of my friends.

Gwen: is this an elaborate plan to get Merlin to kiss you?

Gwaine: isn't Merlin your only friend?

Morgana: male friends only, I hope. Gwen is mine.

Leon: Sire, I must refuse.

Lancelot: my lord, I feel honored *kisses Arthur's hand*

Elyan: you seem very desperate, my lord.

Merlin: should I make a list, Sire? Of all the royals that are close enough to be considered friends? I should write Mithian. Maybe she can still make it.

Everyone: *looking at Merlin*

Merlin: what? Arthur doesn't see me as a friend.

Arthur: .... I wish to be kissed by idiots and idiots only.

Merlin: *used to be called the biggest idiot of all*

Merlin: i shall make sure to snog you senseless, Sire.

Pre:

Holding onto a random surface to keep from swaying

Faltering steps (!!!)

Sweating

Ears ringing

Black spots in field of vision -> blinking rapidly to keep lucidity

Waves of nausea

Worried stares from their friends/caretaker/love interest

"I think I need to sit down" from Whumpee

"You should sit down" from Caretaker

"Are you okay? You look... pale"

"I... I don't feel so good"

During:

Slumping on someone/something

Knees buckling (!)

Eyes rolling back (!!!)

Hitting something on their way down

"Whumpee...? Are you- Whumpee!"

Post:

Caretaking!!!

Waking up in a different place, confused and aching

Taking care of whatever injury they got while falling

Lightheadedness

Headaches

Shaky hands

Waking up to Caretaker's hands stroking their hair

Whumpee trying (and failing) to stand up right away -> Caretaker forcing them back down

Caretaker checking for a fever or an hidden injury, knowing the whumpee would never ask for help until it's too late

"How long was I out?"

"Hey there... Took you long enough to wake up"

"shh, stop apologising. You just fainted, it's not your fault" (I swear I'm not obsessed with soft caretakers)

"When was the last time you ate a full meal?"

"Drink some water" "...I don't think I can hold the glass" "It's okay, I'll help you"
