Headcanon:

In the world of Good Omens, "angel" as a term of endearment has appeared in many languages because of Crowley's use of it to talk of Aziraphale across the ages.

Due to the repetition, always and always, and due to their relationship being canonically understood as romantic by anybody they meet, it has slowly made its way into usual human language to speak of their loved one(s).

see. the issue is what maggie n nina pointed out after three days of knowing aziraphale and crowley. they don’t talk. they don’t communicate. they love each other, sure. they banter and have meals and drinks and would die for each other. but they spend so much of their relationship inferring how the other feels. assuming what the other wants. aziraphale assumed crowley wanted to be an angel again. crowley assumed aziraphale would be able to give up being one. they don’t have a middle ground bc they didn’t know one was necessary

The thing is, I don't think Aziraphale thinks of it as changing Crowley at all. To him, Pre-Fall Crowley and Demon Crowley are the same person, kind and fun and sweet and cool and equally beloved. So to him, there should be no difference whether Crowley is here on Earth or up in Heaven with him, he'll still just be Crowley, and at least this way they would be safe and protected.

All the while Crowley sees it as Aziraphale's long-term love and acceptance being conditional (like God's that was already ripped away), that Aziraphale has just been slumming it with him being a demon bc there wasn't anything they could do about it, and that he's jumping at the chance to fundamentally change Crowley the first chance he gets.

"why are beelzebub and gabriel allowed to be happy but aziraphale and crowley aren't" because this story isn't about beelzebub and gabriel. it's not that they got their happy ending and aziracrow got fucked over. gabriel and beelzebub's relationship is meant to show aziraphale and crowley what they can have if they were on the same page. this is what aziraphale and crowley can achieve in the next season. because gabriel and beelzebub's story is done (for now). aziraphale and crowley still have at least one more season.
