The genius of Merrily, in particular this production of it, is that it fools you because the very worst things to happen to these people happens at the beginning, and so the show is just a series of watching them get better and brighter and more hopeful and then at the end of the show you find yourself sobbing anyway. Because the show has told you the whole time that it's a story about loss-- but it's not until the very end that you find out what it is they had to lose.
