as shinya reached up to pinch his cheek, atticus chuckled, pulling away after a single pinch. he wasn't going to sit still for that and risk having harm come to his beautiful face. this beautiful face was part of what kept them afloat!

... well, not necessarily so. his business would still thrive even without him as the face of it. but his vanity demanded he take care.

"ooh, fighting words," he laughed, cupping beneath shinya's jaw and guiding his face upward. "is that truly it? just the sex? didn't you eventually grow endeared to my secretly lovable personality?"

he pressed a kiss to shinya's forehead, smiling.

"my poor shinya, suffering so terribly."

Fine. He'll bite.

"I didn't loathe your beauty. I loathed the personality attached to said beauty."

Shinya drops everything to reciprocate in kind, lovingly pinching a cheek in return.

"Unfortunately, I also thrive on being utterly dramatic and I'm hopelessly attracted to hot, powerful men. Quite the curse of my own."

Whatever he had been trying so hard to focus on had now completely fallen to the wayside, his attention drawn to that flash of teeth that he can never seem to just ignore.

"If you must know how I cope: I don't. The sex helps, as well as not being so far in the closet that I could stumble into Narnia. But other than that, yeah. It's endless torment."

the worst crime one could ever commit--being criminally good-looking. it simply couldn't be helped. besides, who was he to deny the world of his beauty?

reaching out, he squashed shinya's cheeks between both palms, fingers curling in to squeeze and poke them.

"remember when you used to loathe my beauty? how do you manage to cope with it now, surrounded by it all the time?" he teased, flashing a toothy grin.

with an expectant look, atticus evaluated the mercenary he was attempting to hire. emphasis on 'attempting', as he had gone out of his way to find either an individual or group who could take on the arduous task he had required. it was not really a matter of concern regarding funds--he had ample, his pockets always full--but the skill and talent.

the wastelands atticus intended to cross were a deterrent for most all travelers. the beasts that plagued them were creatures never before seen and ungodly, the environment was unforgivable, and the closest town was better found back where one came from. one would have to cross the entirety of the wastelands to reach the fortress of a city that laid beyond it, and not many could survive such a journey.

if this was to be yet another rejection from a traveling sword-for-hire who knew they could not surmount this beast, maybe he would go it alone and test his luck.

all that mattered was that atticus needed to get to where cairo had been stolen away to.

"if it cannot, please let me know now. time is of the essence and i cannot dawdle."

with a scrutinizing eye, atticus king surveyed the man brought to his top floor office who was precisely the opposite of the one his assistant had reached out to. for one, the private investigator in question had been a woman--black hair, brown eyes, under five foot six. he had deliberately sought out someone with an unsuspecting appearance, and this 'kurama' was anything but.

blond, blue-eyed, tall--he'd stick out like a sore thumb, yet his credentials were undeniable, and his work superb.

"but i was informed that my original contract had cancelled last minute, unfortunately, so you'll have to pardon the incorrect details in the file you were given."

one leg crossed over the other, and he tilted his head. this was a delicate circumstance, and one he did not often dabble in--but this particular market competitor was simply annoying, and any avenue he could take to have them thrown off their work for however long... well, it was worth the money.

"before we continue," he began, leaning in and pushing a document forward. "this confidentiality agreement will need to be reviewed and signed. if you are not comfortable with my terms--you're welcome to walk."

such bloody mayhem carved out by such a beautiful individual. well, save for all matters of gore splattered upon their person, resulting in a scrunching of atticus's nose and a look of pointed disgust. somehow, the fact it was all alien remains made it that much more nauseating as he looked upon innards unfamiliar and unpleasant.

beside him, his companion, cairo, tucked up closer to his flank, the lion watching the stranger with guarded eyes. any closer, and the massive beast would knock atticus over, but he seemed used to it as he tangled his fingers into cairo's black mane.

"i mean, they had started it, but i almost feel sorry for the things."

where even had this man manifested from? atticus could discern that even cairo had been caught unawares by this curious stranger as the massive lion struggled with letting his hackles flatten and the electricity coursing along his weighty claws to dissipate into static. cairo's nostrils flared, and he gave a hearty huff, as if to confirm atticus's warning.
