the most disorienting thing thats ever happened to me was when a linguistics major stopped in the middle of our conversation, looked me in the eye, and said, "you have a very interesting vernacular. were you on tumblr in 2014?" and i had to just stand there and process that one for a good ten seconds

People who were popular in high school will join fandom spaces like: “Why is there a disproportionate number of queer people around here!? Why are you guys cosplaying in public? Why are you guys not ashamed of the cringey things you do!?”

Like, everyone is welcome in fandom, but y’all gotta acknowledge the “weird kids” that you never understood in highschool were here first. Usually since we were kids. Queer ppl aren’t taking over fandoms, fandoms are just a place of community where queer people find each other and can be understood.

Sometimes I still think about a conversation I had with my first childhood best friend on a bus during the ride over to a field trip. We were probably around 10 or 11 which made the contents of our conversation surprisingly mature in retrospect.

We were two kids, discussing our crisis of faith. Apparently both of us had been questioning the Catholic upbringing we had at that point. I was so scared to bring it up to anyone because back then faith was so important to my family. But in my best friend I found someone not only willing to discuss those doubts but seemingly had the same kind of spirituality as me.

We both talked about feeling a draw to nature-based faith bordering on Animism. And how Catholicism felt like it had some things right, but enough wrong that we didn’t identify with it. We both saw the bible as more metaphorical, as apposed to the strict fact we were told to interpret it through.

Sometimes I still think of this friend. I wonder if our sense of faith and spirituality are still just as aligned. Maybe she’s out there somewhere also identifying as an omnist pagan. Or maybe her beliefs have changed. Maybe she’s made peace with Catholicism, or identifies as some other spirituality. Maybe she’s just an atheist with an affinity for nature. Wherever she ended up I hope she’s doing well.

#lgbt stuff #there’s such a strong sense of protectiveness in the queer community and I’d say it’s most likely also tied to this #the older generation isn’t all here to advocate for our little queer kids so young adults fill the role #I mean obviously it’s also because our communities kids are having their rights and safety taken away #but I sometimes think about what would be different if the older generation didn’t go through that
