Chapter Ten | Confess?

19th April, 2:30am

Never had Jungkook been this anxious about going to meet someone. The entire drive to YNs place, he was questioning if he was making the right choice about telling her that her boyfriend was cheating on her. Of course, she deserved to know the truth. But should it come from him? Would she even believe him? What he knew for sure that it would be better if she found out sooner rather than later. It seemed that he was the only one to know what Misun was doing. The streets of Seoul were eerily quiet, which was not helping with his stress. As he stared at the dark roads, he wondered whether YN had truly forgiven him for his actions all those years ago. He felt he didn’t even deserve it anyway.

The journey there seemed to last for an eternity, but eventually, he arrived at her building. He gazed up at the apartment block, feeling nauseous. Hastily, he texted YN he had arrived and she let him into the building. As he pressed the button to call for the elevator, he looked back to the entrance. He thought that he could be a coward once again. He could just leave and not have to tell her the terrible truth. A loud ding signalled that the lift door had opened. He turned back, sighed, and walked in. He was not going to be a coward this time.

As Jungkook got to her floor, he glanced at an incoming text message from YN on his phone. It read ‘The front door is unlocked so just come in, no need to knock’. Jungkook gently pushed the front door to YNs apartment open. Most of the flat was in darkness except for the kitchen where the light was on; it seemed it wasn’t just Jungkook and YN kept awake tonight. YNs roommate and friend, Hoseok, was sat at the kitchen island, typing something on his laptop. Upon the arrival of Jungkook, he looked up. And he did not seem pleased.

Hoseok beckoned Jungkook over and stated ‘YN told me you were coming over’ He was really glaring at Jungkook ‘I told her that probably wasn’t a good idea. But as usual, she’s being stubborn.’ He pointed past the lounge area towards some double doors that opened out onto a balcony ‘YN is waiting out on the balcony for you’ As he was about to head over to YN, Hoseok pulled him back, gripping his arm, ‘You better not hurt her again, Jungkook’.

YN did not even look up at Jungkook when he opened the double doors and went to stand beside her. She was really absorbed in the view from the balcony, leaning on the rail and looking deep in thought. Admittedly, it was a stunning view of the Seoul Skyline. Jungkook could have stared at it forever. He didn’t know how to start the conversation. How would he even begin a conversation that it involved telling his best friend that she was being lied to and cheated on? While he thought of the right thing to say, he decided it was best they remained in silence and continued staring out into the night.

However, YN finally broke the silence and turned to Jungkook but instantly noticed a purple bruise on his cheek. Ever since she had sent that text message telling him to come over, she had been building up to what she wanted to say. She was angry and wanted to let him know, but that all melted away, swiftly replaced with concern, when she saw that Jungkook had been hurt. She reached up to cup his face ‘Oh my god, Jungkook, what happened to you? Is this to do with the company suspending you?’

Jungkook tried to reassure her, giving her a soft smile, placing his hand over hers ‘Don’t worry about me.’ Their hands remained on each other for what was a bit too long. Quickly, they snatched their hands away and went back to awkwardly facing away from each other, once more staring out over the balcony at the night sky. YN glimpsed Jungkook, his expression was intense. What he had to say then must not be good. It was finally time. He pulled two deck chairs from the corner of the patio, unfolded them and gestured for YN to sit down.

A sinking feeling came over her as Jungkook sat down and looked at her dead in the eyes. ‘Look, YN, there is no good way to say this…’ He kept stumbling over his words, wishing that he didn’t have to do this. ‘Last night, I was at this bar and I saw Misun.’ He looked down at his lap and began fiddling with the zipper on his jacket. ‘ He came in. Y/N, I saw him with another woman. And I saw him kissing her. I’m really sorry to tell you this. But you had to know the truth.’ He really did look remorseful.

Silence fell between them. YN didn’t even utter a single word. All she did was stand up, fold the chair and put it back in the corner. She walked over to the balcony railings and rested her arms upon them and rubbing her face in her hands. Jungkook walked up behind her, trying to see if she was okay. He could not tell what she was feeling from the look on her face. She remained poker-faced. Jungkook wanted to comfort her, so placed a hand on her shoulder.

Without hesitation, she pushed him away, seething ‘How cruel can you be? First, you abandon me for your career all those years ago? And now you’re trying to ruin my relationship? This is a new low, Jungkook.’ She crossed her arms furiously. She really didn’t want to believe that what Jungkook was telling her might actually be the truth.

Jungkook thought this would probably happen, so before she could tell him to get out, he grabbed his phone from his jean pockets, opened up the incriminating message from Misun and showed it to her, ‘You have every right to be angry at me and I understand you don’t have good reason to trust me. But please look at this. I am not lying about this.’

YN took the phone, read it, but the writing was becoming blurry as tears formed. Could Misun have really said all those horrible things to Jungkook? She couldn’t really deny what was in front of her. Now she felt like a totally naïve idiot for believing that he really felt the same towards her. Just when she thought she could finally move on from Jungkook and find someone who loved her, this happened. In a wave of anger, she ran to balcony railings, screamed into the night and threw Jungkook’s phone off the balcony.

Hoseok, who had moved to the couch to get a better view of Jungkook and YN, just in case she needed help, noticed the commotion going on in the balcony and dashed outside to intervene. ‘YN! Do I need to get him out?’ As he was stepping towards Jungkook, about to escort him out of the building, YN held her hands up ‘No don’t worry Hobi, you can go back inside.’ She was beginning to calm down. Reluctantly, Hoseok did so and returned to his room.

YN retreated inside and slumped down on the couch with Jungkook following in haste. She muttered, looking deeply exhausted, ‘I’m sorry, Jungkook. About your phone. And I’m sorry I didn’t believe you. I know it must have been hard for you to tell me’. Jungkook sat down next to her, reassuring her that ‘It’s only a phone.’ YN suddenly sat up, feeling guilty and pointed once more towards the bruise on Jungkook’s face, ‘So that’s why you got into that fight?’. She covered her mouth, starting to sob. ‘You got suspended for me?’ Jungkook hugged her as she curled into a ball, weeping into his chest. ‘He deserved it, YN.’ Suddenly, she sat up and out of nowhere declared,

‘I am so sick of everything. You know, I don’t even know what’s keeping me in this city anymore. Nothing ever good has happened to me here. What’s the point anymore?’

Jungkook didn’t know where this came from. He wanted to confess his feelings to her. He wanted to be the reason she was staying here. But surely it would be wrong and simply inappropriate to confess straight after she had just found out what her boyfriend was up to, right?
