sanity
"Stop looking at me like that! I have nothing to apologize for." She thought about how insane she would seem to an outsider right now. "It wasn't my fault and you know it."
She sighed. "But it wasn't yours either, so I'm sorry for snapping."
"Meow," her companion replied.

sunsets
They sat upon a rock as the shifting rays of dusk settled around them. The sun took its time sinking towards the horizon, and then seemingly fell away all at once.
“Isn’t it nice that a perfect sunset can make everything else that’s imperfect feel okay, even just for a little while?” she mused, more to herself than her companion.
He had never thought of a daily astronomical event as being able to cure anything, but the fact that she did made him decide that it could.
He smiled.
“Yeah.”

crumble
A breath. A word. A pause. In those few seconds, his whole world came crashing down around him, without a sliver of hope for repair.

persevere
“I can’t do this anymore,” she despaired. As she stepped away, there was a whisper, a call. “You must. You know why.” A flash of courage and strength sped through her and she caught it by the skin of her teeth. She will prevail.

release
Her eyes flitted upwards from the piece of paper in her hands. Inside her was a mess of emotions she couldn’t even begin to fathom sorting through. But in her heart, she knew. She was finally free.

a bad decision
He really should have seen this coming. I mean, you decide to try to walk your worries away in the middle of the night, in the woods, wearing a dark shirt, you have no one to blame but yourself. He thought his chances of encountering a bad human were zero. And he was right. Now he was here. Face to face with a large wild animal. He sighed. He really should have seen this coming.

flight
As she stood on the edge of her city, she looked back one last time. She shook the thoughts from her head. There was nothing left for her here. Onward. She clutches her bag tighter. Onward. She turns her back to the place that betrayed her time and time again. Onward. She takes a step forward. Onward.

haven
She’s walking through the woods in a dream-like state. The sun is shining above the trees, and a breeze shifts the leaves, making the shadows dance. The farther in she gets, the more the branches are reaching for each other until hardly any light is able to peek through. Here, finally, she feels safe. Here, she is safe enough to release the tidal wave that is in her heart. She takes a deep breath, and screams.
