Can we talk about the chess scene with Cullen for a minute?  Because he’s absolutely adorable in it!
The chess scene is the first time that we get to see Cullen relaxing and having fun.  Cullen and Dorian are trading quips about who is going to win the game, and we see a bit of Cullen’s competitive side, which we will see again during that doomed (for him) game of Wicked Grace later. It’s obvious that the two men are friends and enjoy spending time together; if Cullen ever hated mages, it’s clear that he no longer feels that way.
If you weren’t in love with Cullen by now, you will be after this scene because he wears this little sideways smirk on his face the entire time, and he’s got these little wrinkles around the corners of his eyes, and just…oh, Cullen, I want you, you adorable, sexy man!
Oh, and let’s not forget how he is sitting! He’s just about sprawled in that chair, taking up a lot of space with his legs spread wide — he’s confident right now — no trace of awkward shyness here.  And although he is relaxed, his body is in constant motion; he shifts back and forth in his seat and jiggles his legs.  It feels so real — he feels so real.
But the best part is what happens at the end: if you cheat or allow him to win, Cullen wins the game; however if you play fair, you win the game. One interpretation of this that I’ve seen, and with which I agree, is that Cullen lets you win if you play fair. If you think about it, it’s quite clear that Cullen is very good at chess — he is capable of winning even when you cheat, and he is, after all, a master tactician. The only way you can come out on top is if he allows it, and he does so because he values honesty.
What do you guys think?

It's still funny how in the romance Wynne talks to Alistair like "hehe awwww. Somebody has a little crush ❤️ I can tell you like her. It's very cute you should go talk to her :)" and when she's talking to the warden she's like "you stupid motherfucker. What the hell do you think you're doing."

CONFESSION:
I think everyone should play dragon age the way they love without having to explain to anybody why they choose a human character over fantasy races. Is nice sharing experience but sometimes I have the feeling they are justifying to others. Guys, you don't need. All ways to play are valid.

i know it’s been said before, but it bears repeating: a big, big part of maintaining your confidence & self esteem as a creator is fully embracing the concept of “you don’t have to be good like them.  you can be good like you.”
for example, i’m not someone who’s particularly good at coming up with complex, elaborate plots or incredibly unique ideas.  it’s just not how i choose to write.  and it would be easy for me to look at someone with an elaborate, super unique plot & decide that because i don’t write like that, i’m not a good writer.  after all, unique plots are good, and my writing lacks those, so my writing must not be good, right?  well, no, actually.  i just have different strengths, like taking a simple premise & digging super deep into its emotional depths.  that’s what i do well & it isn’t any better or worse than people who do elaborate world building or come up with really creative and unexpected plots.
your writing is never going to be all things to all people.  it just isn’t.  inevitably, you’ll have to make creative choices that favor certain aspects of writing over others.  there is truly no getting around that & it’s honestly a good thing, because it means you’ve developed your own style.  but you’ll always encounter other creators who posses strengths that you don’t.  it doesn’t mean one is better than the other or that your writing isn’t good enough.
comparing yourself like that would be like taking a piece of pizza & a cupcake & going “oh no, that cupcake is so sweet & my pizza isn’t sweet at all.” or “gosh, the garlic crust on that pizza is delicious and my cupcake doesn’t have ANY garlic.”  obviously your pizza isn’t sweet.  obviously your cupcake doesn’t have garlic.  a food can’t have every single delicious flavor at once.  the cupcake is good like a cupcake.  the pizza is good like a pizza.  so you don’t have to be good like them.  you can be good like you.

THIS.
And that's not even to mention the things some companions can say when you literally capture Caer Bronach; Vivienne and Dorian both talk about being basically entitled to the fort because you defeated the bandits. And it’s completely unironic without any apparent narrative concern for the start of what could easily become an imperialistic attitude.
And what about Josie and Marquis Durellion earlier in the game? She seems confident that the marquis does not have any legitimate claim on Haven, as though the man who was maintaining Haven as a peaceful pilgrimage site open to all who wished to make the journey is a less appealing option to Ferelden than the budding military power that is taking great pains to NOT be affiliated with any existing power, AND which is primarily formed of the remnants of the Divine’s notably Orlesian-comprised army. Josie herself even brings this up in In Hushed Whispers, citing it as a reason the Inquisition can’t be the group to directly evict Alexius.
And speaking of In Hushed Whispers, where does the Inquisition get off judging Alexius, a Tevinter magister who effectively took over Redcliffe, a major Fereldan town/trading hub? That should be something a ruling figure in Ferelden does...
The Inquisition making these horrible political missteps isn’t narratively a bad thing necessarily; it’s that the narrative doesn’t make anything of it, and seems to be trying to convince us that it’s not only warranted but very necessary in most cases.
still always thinking about the fact in inquisition u can just execute a local leader from ferelden and this is presented as a normal and good thing. a foreign theocratic entity executing a leader of a sovereign nation for a crime committed a decade before said theocratic entity existed is well…I think it’s something that should ruffle more feathers than it did!

The conclusion of my collection of face studies!  At least for now.  Got all my main Wardens, plus some Orlesian Wardens, and now, the final Warden and Hawke.  This one was a fun challenge with the watercolor brush because it tends to have a weaker and less saturated hue than other opaque brush options, which can throw off the base skin tone.  It was a fun challenge, don’t get me wrong, but oof, sometimes it feels like I’m still learning basic colors... xD
Anyhow, here are the final three characters I had planned: from left to right, Velyn Mahariel, Alessandra Surana, and Jaren Hawke.  Let’s go!
Velyn Mahariel - My canon Mahariel, who excels with the bow, and who is the only member of the Warden recruits who was conscripted against his will.  Upon being saved by Duncan and promised to the Wardens, Velyn resisted to the point at which Duncan used the Right of Conscription, and as a result, Velyn has little respect or kindness for the Wardens or Duncan himself.  Velyn has always been eager to prove himself to his clan and Dalish peers, and harbors a deep rage and disdain for humans because of all the Dalish have lost to them over the centuries.  Velyn was raised to be a hunter for his clan, but unfortunately was not considered a strong candidate to become Master of the Hunt.  His tendency to rush into a fight, or look before he leapt, made the hahrens of the Sabrae clan uncertain as to how much he could be trusted to lead with a level head.  A peerless warrior nevertheless, Velyn has not given up on the possibility of returning to his clan and proving himself once the Blight is over.
Alessandra Surana - My canon Surana, an anti-Circle mage who flees the Circle during the upheaval caused by Uldred and lives as an apostate blood mage.  Alessandra was born in Antiva, and her parents relocated to Ferelden when she was quite young, and she was soon after taken into the Fereldan Circle.  She was trained apart from the majority of her peers once her skill for magic was realized, and eventually she became a Kinloch Hold combat mage.  That is, a mage trained specifically to do battle with enemies of the Circle and Chantry (the Fereldan version of the typically Orlesian Knight-Enchanters).  For a time, Alessandra served the Circle in this capacity, along with two other mages, Frala and Tully, but over time grew to disdain her position.  Very often, combat mages would be dispatched with templars to relocate and apprehend apostate mages; over the course of many such missions, Alessandra became bitter and angry toward the Circle and templars.  The Battle of Ostagar, to which Alessandra was dispatched with her fellow combat mages, was the last straw, and Alessandra used Uldred’s uprising afterward to escape the Circle with the goal of destroying her phylactery.
Jaren Hawke -  My canon Hawke.  While technically born a mage, Jaren doesn’t actually use his magic very often.  When he was young, he trained with his father, both in order to build his skills as a mage and learn to hide his magic, but once Bethany began to join in their training as well, Jaren noticed that Carver seemed to feel left out.  One day, Jaren pretended that his magic “wasn’t working” in order to find a way to include Carver in something, and began learning how to wield a sword alongside him.  He still would train with Bethany, but he used his magic less and less, preferring to see Malcolm focus his attention on helping Bethany.  By the time the Fifth Blight started, Jaren had not used his magic for over a decade and very strongly leaned toward using his sword.  Jaren was present with Carver during the Battle of Ostagar, and helped his brother to escape so they both could reunite with Leandra and Bethany.  Jaren loves fighting, but hates killing, and is drawn very much to the healing elements of magic.  He tends to use sarcasm and humor to cover a deep empathy for others, and the problems in Kirkwall get under his skin as a result.
The final face studies!!  These took forever to get out, but they’re finished, and I’m quite happy with how they turned out!  I enjoy the green background with these characters.  I might jump ahead to Inquisition characters to get some of them involved too, but for now, this is where I’ll leave this art project!

a pervasive and frankly borderline toxic issue in fandom these days is how popular headcanons are elevated to the status of being irrefutable canon and so insanely clung to and that when they are challenged, majority of fandom lose their damn minds and forget they was the ones to make the shit up in the first place
