“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said that. I didn’t mean it to come out the way it did.” I said, for the first time in three years apologising for something.

“I took out my frustrations on you, I was feeling nervous and overwhelmed. What I’d said was meant for other people. I’d never want you to stay away from me, not even if it’s only for a day.” I explained myself further.

It was also for the first time in my life I felt safe enough to explain how I felt. I knew I wouldn’t be gaslighted. Not by him. Never by him. Because our relationship wasn’t built on love solely, but also on mutual respect.

I’d thought I’ve found the one before. I was convinced I saw my future in their eyes. Needless to say all those great love stories ended with a soul crushing heartbreak. I didn’t realise it at the time, but looking back now, I can see how much I’ve grown. Figured out what I want in a man and what I don’t. What I can tolerate and what I can’t. I learned how to set boundaries and to raise my voice, when they are overstepped. I learned to respect myself enough to make myself a priority. And only after all those lessons were learned, I’ve met him. My number one supporter, my best friend. Hopefully the love of my life. Yes, I see myself growing old with him. I love him differently than all the boys I’ve loved before. So I pray he is not yet another lesson to be learned, but only time will tell.

Every once in a while it hits me that I love you even more than I have ever loved you before. Then I lie awake at night, trying to wrap my head around it, but the only explanation I come up with is that love truly is limitless and you’re the one supposed to teach me that.

I wish phones didn’t automatically end the call after two hours. We fall asleep on speaker, and I hear you breathing or snoring lightly on the other side and it’s become my favourite lullaby. Then I wake up in the middle of the night and you’re gone. I wish we were still on the line, I toss and turn, this bed is so big and lonely. I miss you. I fall back asleep, hugging my pillow, but nothing makes me sleep better than you do.
