Walk it Off, Pt 1

Story: Bucky and Clint are both in Brooklyn. They’re bonding over NY and pizza and fighting mobsters and a relationship is forming but Bucky’s guilt and nightmares and ptsd is every present and Bucky’s finding it hard to cope.

Bucky: I’m fine Clint

Clint: you’re not. I can see you’re not. Hell, you’re sitting on the floor Bucky, not even on a pillow, just on the floor.

Bucky: like you’ve never just sat on the floor…

Clint: ok, I can’t argue with that, but you can’t keep isolating yourself. You’re punishing yourself when you shouldn’t be. Look, I know it’s not the same but I have a little experience with being brainwashed and what you did was not your fault.

Bucky: But I did it

Clint: you didn’t have a choice, you are not responsible for what Hydra made you do.

Autistic Bucky Barnes in Wakanda

When he wakes up there are lots of new things to see, new smells and sounds to get used to. It is overwhelming.

Even when the people around his speak English different accents, sayings and body language than he is familiar with means his auditory processing and his ability to follow a conversation is compromised. Some days are worse than others.

People he Interacted with were very understanding, knowing that he was recovering from being brainwashed, so they gave him a lot of leeway when talking with him. He didn’t have to work so hard to keep up the appearance of being neurotypical, no one expected that from him

He gradually got acclimated to the new place and people and languages and really grew to love it in Wakanda

He found the technology exciting and wanted to learn as much as he could as fast as he could

He was allowed time and space to be alone when he was overwhelmed

He found sitting at a fire is a good multiple sensory experience.

People, including Shuri, Ayo, and T’Challa gave him a lot of space when he needed it and help when he needed it.

He really liked the sound of the languages people spoke, he listen to people talking and would repeat sounds, the words felt good to form with his mouth parts

He appreciated when people were patient with him while he was learning to speak some Xhosa, this was a new experience because when he was growing up he was expected to just spit out what he was trying to say or be quiet because ‘children are seen and not heard’ and then as the Winter Soldier he was expected mostly to not speak.

Being out in nature like he never was before, not growing up in the city, not during the war, was very grounding for him, there wasn’t constant anxiety or an assault on his senses

caring for animals and doing farm work had a routine that was satisfying

1940s Bucky Barnes is an Autistic Character

He could listen to the radio all day, hates to miss his favorite program

Likes to daydream

Practiced smiling in a mirror when people kept asking him ‘what was wrong’ because of the expression he always had on his face

Likes the routine of working at the docks

Working at the docks allows him breaks from socializing or keeping up appearance that he might have had to do if he worked in a shop or an office

Tries to hide stimming because he would get in trouble as a kid for it, keeps his hands in his pockets a lot so he won’t be seen fidgeting

Dancing is a stim he can do in public, he loves moving his body to music

Loves the feeling of a live band, especially when he can feel the percussion in his chest and the instruments make his whole body vibrate. It’s a good sensory experience

Special interests: technology, fantasy stories (like the Hobbit), taking care of Steve, dancing, music

Doesn’t care about the social conventions that pressure him to not be friends with Steve (a sickly, stubborn, outsider)

Hanging out with Steve is great because they can go to a baseball game or Coney Island together but they can also just sit together and do different things and just be happy keeping each other company

Has a strong sense of justice. Doesn’t like to see people getting picked on

Goes mute sometimes, particularly when he’s upset, overwhelmed or in burnout. He was quiet for days when he got his draft notice

He isn’t a big fan of authority but his need for routine, attention to detail and ability to focus on one thing for a long time let him excel in Army training and become a sniper

Headcanon: The Falcon and The Winter soldier was one long burnout event for Bucky.

He goes into burn out when:

He’s under a lot of stress

Things change in his life

He doesn’t get enough sleep, nightmares keep him up

He’s emotionally overwhelmed

Too much socializing and trying to act ‘normal’ around people

Sensory overload gets to be too much

Is sarcastic but doesn’t always understand other people’s sarcasm.

Is accused of having the wrong emotional reaction to things, the opposite of how people think he should react.

Care and up keep of his metal arm

Having to think about which hand to use

Concentrating so he doesn’t use too much super strength

Concentrating so doesn’t casually knock the metal arm into things

Phantom pain from lost arm

Nerve pain from metal arm connection to his shoulder

Relearning to take care of himself after being deprogrammed

Social situations/ keeping up with conversations

Making decisions for himself

Trying to recognize social cues

Having to think about and regulate his facial expressions

Not sleeping well/ Having nightmares
