here's the thing. "ace people can still have sex" and "aro people can still be in relationships" are objectively true statements. this is because people can do whatever the fuck they want forever regardless of their label/orientation. however some of you have GOT to get your shit together and stop using those statements to undermine larger conversations about aspec identity. following up "ace people don't owe you sex in a relationship" with "ace people can still have sex in a relationship though!" is not fucking helpful! yes it's true. yes it's a reality for many people. however if we used our fucking brains for a second and thought about how following up "people don't have to conform to societal expectation" with "but people can still conform!! don't worry they can still conform!!!!" is counterproductive and very frustrating for a lot of people then we could get back to the actual point which is not "aspec people can still have sex/be in relationships" but "aspec people can do whatever they want with their relationships and their bodies". which they can, by the way. they can do whatever they want forever. and you should give them 200 dollars every time you see them for dealing with this shit

Everytime I remember my mother lamenting that I used to be so much more colorful when I was a child, when all I did was put up a mask to maker her feel good. No piercing, no dye, not choice of clothes, only what she approved of. Trimming ends and never cutting them. Get good grades, be quiet, be grateful that others bully you at least you exist in their eyes, do the chores, go outside when she couldn't stand to look at me even if it was cold or raining.

What a surprise it was when I turned 26, lived far from her, and realised I could cut my hair super short, have piercings, choose bright clothes, stop doing everything I hated, block people out of my life when they annoy me and still be an employable adult recognised for his skills and values.

I wish I could tell past me to throw tantrums or buy that big red hoodie to wear at school. But she was a fragile being, she needed safety and validation.

I still do, but now I give it to myself.

Please go watch Sex Explained on Netflix. Not only is it a great resource for the basic sex education that is sorely lacking in the U.S., but some of ya’ll need to take a deep breath and remember the difference between fantasy vs reality. This purity culture thing that we’re going through right now is directly harmful to responsible, healthy sexual expression. BTW this woman, Lisa Diamond, is a noted psychologist and has been pushing for greater understanding of womens sexuality as a whole.
