slaughter is supposed to be an art form & by god  [sparda,  or with sparda,  if you will]  is trish ever the renaissance painter .  she could give all the old coats rotting beneath florence a lesson in slathering demon guts & it’s a great shame the stains never stay;  blood & bone,  guts & glory,  they flicker in the air as they break apart,  vanishing into the ether .  all that remains is trish & the faint smell of gunpowder .  lady bites the inside of her lip .

one foot in front of the other,  she brings herself forward,  her eyes dance around every corner of the painting except the main subject .  she’s being cheeky & there’s a playful coo from her lips before she answers,  “  you love being fashionable,  i love being late .  ”  we come together well,  we play nice,  she’d like to say .  instead,  she bends her arms upwards,  pulling on her wrist to stretch,  releasing a soft grunt as she settles her gaze on trish & trish alone,

“  nah━  that’s a lie,  just love watchin’ you work .  ”

❝ Didn’t I tell you not to be late? ❞  She teases,  a joke that perhaps comes across too light-hearted amongst all this carnage.  Such is the life they both live, after all.  The atmosphere around them charged by the remnants of electricity and gunpowder in aftermath. Gore paints images of what demons there had been along the walls, while what remained of them lies scattered across the floor.  It‘s no more than child’s play, barely a warm up.  And by now, Trish has grown exceptionally bored of small fry.  

She stands tall next to the final stragglers, demonic leftovers dispersing into nothingness as it continues to disintegrate. Green eyes swim with new found vivacity, as she turns her gaze to fellow hunter, her partner in the art of demon-killing.  Now reunited, the two could finally begin to pick up the pace.  ❝  Or was your entrance meant to be fashionable?  ❞

shouldn't have stuck her on the babysitting job,  there’s nothing about her that screams nanny .  the exact opposite,  actually & in the present moment,  she’s about as far removed from ms. doubtfire as anyone could be,  wrangling some goon’s neck with her garrote .  he’s gurgling,  chocking on his blood as she tightens the wire,  deepening the cut .  he’s shaking,  his hand scratching away is some futile,  desperate attempt to live,  until lady tugs hard & there’s a loud snap .  his body hits the floor face first & she’s left breathless,  stepping back & retracting her weapon into the mechanism around her wrist .  he had more survival instinct than the rest of his crew,  she’ll give him that,  just not enough to counter her bloodlust .  she doesn’t have to look at nero to know how he feels,  he’s all confusion & disgust & she could feel it in his words .

this is a side of her life she doesn’t plan on showing anyone,  ‘specially not the kid .  that fucking call ruined the plan,  what was meant to be one night of learning the ropes from a seasoned devil hunter turned sour fast .  must’ve been her good luck,  or her good charms,  some rival gang moving in on one of her employers’ warehouse & hey,  look who’s in town !  she urged nero to buzz off,  that this job was above him,  that this was shit he didn’t want to see & her vagueness only made him more willing to stick close .  can’t argue with a sparda & she knew he’d change his tune quick when she shot the first guy in the head & his corpse didn’t vanish off the concrete .  he’s gotta see her killing humans .

“  listen,  ”  fingers dance into a fist & she lowers her hand to one side,  managing to look nero in the eye .  she doesn’t know if she’s seeking absolution from him,  or any response at all .  “  life isn’t always sunshine & rainbows & demon killing for all of us,  alright ?  ”  she’s mixing in regret with the rush violence always brings,  she shouldn’t let him in to that sickness she keeps feeding .  “  i━  i gotta get my hands dirty sometimes,  okay ?  do what pays well,  shit’s more complicated than you know .  i━  i told you not to fucking come .  ”

going forward i will probably operate under the assumption that, at least within my main verse, lady & trish are an item. a lot about how they’re presented throughout canon  ( from their first encounter in the anime + the episode ending with lady offering trish a ride & them going on a shopping spree together, plunging dante into further debt. their little combo attack during the finale, combining the kalina ann & trish’s electricity / their intro cutscene in dmc4 with lady being quite intrigued just by the sight of trish fighting + always shown together in the pachinko cutscenes / the fun dance they have in the background of dante’s flashback mission in dmc5, lady excitedly jumping around trish & how playful they are + how oddly suggestive their final scene together is in the beginning, building off that background playfulness as they pout at each other with accusation ), combined with 5 being pretty overt with nico’s attraction to lady & her undressing for nico as a power play, just kind of disallows me from perceiving them in any other way, it just makes too much sense in my awful gay brain. this isn’t to say i will forceship, of course, but i am hurting for a main/active trish to be honest & this is how i choose to cope.

there’s an ironic slant to her smile,  part of it is to mirror his,  gawking at a display of violence that is so very much dante .  the other's just to let him know her next words are a joke,  “  wanna say i don’t love you at all,  ”  maybe love isn’t the word she’s looking for and,  in this context,  it’s usage isn’t serious .  dante’s is her oldest pal;  any notion that the years they’ve spent bickering in his office weren’t special would be a lie,  an awful one at that .  devil may cry was as much her home as it was his,  the one spot on the map she could always come back to,  awaiting her with days old pizza in the fridge & shitty 80′s music playing on the jukebox  [she paid to have it fixed last time & he should be thankful she didn’t add it to the debt] .

behind all that banter,  any frustration at how they choose to do their job,  there’s a connection there whose absence would leave lady all the emptier .  trish & her love to indulge,  the way they feed into each other is intoxicating,  it leaves room for little else between them .  just bloody teeth & ripped clothes,  bruised lips brushing against worn lipstick,  a spark that lights the fuse .  she doesn’t wear her heart on her sleeve for trish,  who doesn’t quite know how to handle her soul .  dante’s always been more apt at emotional honesty,  nothing’s ever spoken,  it’s just that she could read him & he in return .  cause the shit they’ve been through together ?  can’t share that with anyone else .

“  but that’ll break your heart & that’s your weak spot,  right ?  ”  lady nudges his shoulder with her elbow,  in the end it was all a light tease,  simple words that mask their history .  like it’s always been & always will be .

the kalina ann is flush against her side,  feeling the familiar cold of its black steel frame,  just before it gets warm .  “  yeah,  yeah━  ”  lady doesn’t need the incentive,  but this daniel guy & his infuriating french accent insist on directing the action like he is some kinda puppet-master,  probably rolling a pen between his fingers & grinning into his shitty glasses while listening in on comms .  she’d throw her earpiece into the water if it didn’t go against company protocol .

they don’t even have the decency to give her a good paycheck for working on their cleanup crew .  if public scrutiny & proven track record weren’t around,  this’d be just twisting the knife,  salt on the wound left from her father & spencer .  maybe they’re cringing in hell at what the government did with umbrella’s american branch,  flipping it on its head,  making the world a better place;  or laughing at her for the little joke fate played on her,  a mercenary with no qualms for getting her hands dirty,  willing to take money from the corporation that ruined her life .  the thought just makes her angry & it’s the kind of fuel she needs,

“  get your kicks out of this,  frenchie !  ”  her finger pulls the trigger,  all that waiting for the targeting system to engage & in a second,  two dozen small missiles burst out of the kalina ann’s barrel .  they have no issue finding the horde,  these infected are as slow as they are stupid & she anticipates the pattern of explosions,  listening carefully .  her smiles deepens with every undead turned into a pile of gore,  the sound of their pained groans steels her resolve & she doesn’t wait for daniel’s next command .  the real show is about to start .

“  devil hunters & demons,  you know how it is .  ”  there is something sardonic in how she leans to one side,  hands carefully applying bandages along unfamiliar shoulders  [always an important reminder,  demons are humanoid,  not human] .  she can feel them,  pressing her palms against riley’s back,  inhuman traits writhing beneath her skin that betray her appearance .  there is a song & dance to how they landed themselves in this motel room,  on the run,  the sturdier of the two with enough cuts & bruises to worry,  & in the moment,  it seems immaterial .  lady’s mind wanders to trish,  of what she’d think of lady entertaining another demon,  of her spectacular healing & how it was her electric touch that usually cauterised lady’s wounds .  tonight the tables are flipped & riley has kept things interesting .  she has a certain magnetic pull that lady has to fight to resist,  no hard guesses just what kind of demon she is .  “  can’t win me over with a few nice words,  i’m not that easy .  ”  the average joe might fall over his feet,  luckily,  lady has known enough devils that she can anchor her mind,  got possessed by a few of them too .

once the gauze is good & ready,  her hands fall between her legs,  crossed together on the bed as her fingers tap against the leather of her gloves .  her expression is dazed,  trying not to give in to riley’s trance & it’s easy to wonder how bad could it really be ?  she’s been around the block a few times,  had her apprehension towards demons challenged at every turn,  by close friends & complete strangers alike .  this was just another encounter in a long line .  the night’s been long,  she’s tense & tired & just fresh off worrying for someone’s life,  maybe she needs this .  that abrasive nature lady dons as a shield is good for protection & in riley’s eyes,  she sees she has nothing to fear .
