It was 4:16 on a Monday morning when you woke to the sound of urgent banging on your window. Soobin’s silhouette standing out against the full moon. You opened the window silently, listening to words fall from his lips as he moved to your closet.
You had been quite used to him barging into your house like this, but this time was different. Normally if he was barging in he needed to be bandaged up, he needed somewhere to stay for the rest of the night. As you inspected his tall frame you saw no new bruises, no gashes, just the old bandages, and band-aids from the last time you had wrapped him up.
“Are you even listening to what I’m saying?” Soobin’s voice snapped you from your thoughts. “I need to know if you’ll help.” You’re eyebrows furrowed, what had he been talking about?
“Help with what?”
“Hiding a body.”
That's how you got here, room 146 of some shitty hotel you can’t care to remember the name of. The only thing you care about is the man on the ground. His lifeless eyes staring up at the ceiling and you can’t bear to look at them for too long.
You look away from the body, a nauseous feeling rising in your throat, and instead focus on the others in the room. Beom sits in the corner farthest from the body, his head in his hands as he stares at the ground. He’s in a state of shock.
Soobin stands next to the door, leaning on the wall as he stares at the body, absently tapping his teeth, a habit of his that he does while thinking.
Taehyung sits silently on the bed, letting out a yawn before absently kicking his feet. Bored you guess.
Yeonjun stands next to you, his eyes flickering around the body before flicking to look at Beomgyu. Evaluating.
When Soobin had said they needed help hiding a body you hadn’t taken him seriously. Yet here you were, now an accessory to the murder of this man. There was no way out of it now.
Your sigh grabs the attention of all the boys in the room. “Okay,” you speak up, “if I’m helping I think I deserve an explanation.”
Beomgyu’s head snaps up, as he stands quickly. “You really think there’s time for that?” he sneers. From the corner of your eyes, you can see Taehyun shrug before laying back on the bed, arms and legs splayed out. “Why not, it’s not like the guys going anywhere.”
Beomgyu rolls his eyes at the poor-morale joke before giving in. He places himself in the chair beside the bed and lets out a sigh.
“It was an accident, I swear.”

“Hey, are you good?”
You’re snapped from your thoughts at the sound of a voice. Looking up you see Huening Kai’s concerned face, his backpack draped over his shoulders.
“The bell rang a few minutes ago, you looked pretty spaced out.” He continues
Your back straightens as you notice that he’s correct, all the other students have indeed already left the class, on their way to lunch.
“Oh,” you manage to get out as you stand, rushing to put your things away. “I guess I was just thinking.”
Kai is quick to help you place your books in your bag and holds the door open as you leave the classroom. “Thinking about what?” He questions, head tilting slightly to the right.
You take a long look at Kai as he walks in front of you. Completely carefree, happy even, with a little bounce in his step as you walk. He was the epitome of all good and you could never taint him. A smile makes its way to your lips, “I was thinking about our plans, we’re still all hanging out, right?”
Kai beams at the mention of your traditional Monday meet-up after school, jumping excitedly. “Oh, I almost forgot about that!” The smile slowly slips from his face and dread fills your stomach. “I guess everyone was just so busy this weekend that I wasn’t sure we’d still have it.”
You’re quick to try and cheer the boy up “Of course we’re still having it? Just because we’ve all been a bit sidetracked doesn’t mean we’d skip on hanging out with you!”
Kai smiles again, a fond look on his face as he giggles “You’re right, sorry I don’t know what I was thinking.” You enter the cafeteria and quickly slip into your normal seats, a table in the corner, closest to the windows. Taehyun already sits there. He stares out the window with a blank expression, simply observing the outdoor scenery.
“Taehyun!”
At the sound of Huening Kai’s voice, Taehyun’s head snaps in your direction, a smile forming on his lips. “Hey” he greets.
“Taehyun you never answered my calls this morning” Kai whines, taking a seat by the boy while placing his head on the table, “I wanted to walk together.”
You notice how the corners of Taehyun’s eyes crinkle for a second as his smile gets tighter, forced even. “Ah I’m sorry, I woke up late this morning, I must have been really tired.”
You see through the lie but Huening Kai doesn’t. Maybe you only see through it because you were there too, but you like to think you're smarter than that anyways.
You sit down beside Kai as he lifts his head, seemingly accepting the excuse. He happily pulls his lunch from his bag and begins to trade with Taehyung. Apple slices for oranges.
It doesn’t take long for Soobin to find you all, Yeonjun hot on his tail. Soobin takes the empty seat next to you and Yeunjun opts to sit next to Taehyun on the other side of the table. Heuning Kai greets both of them with much enthusiasm, before questioning the absence of Beomgyu.
Heavy hands clasp onto your shoulders, the grip cold but familiar. “Here I am~”
‘Beomgyu,’ you think.
The boy quickly makes his way to the other side of the table and takes his place next to Yeonjun, small giggles leaving his lips.
Beomgyu, the friend of yours who just hours prior had committed manslaughter. Who’s hands had been wrapped around an adult male’s throat with so much force, so much violence, that the man’s soul slipped from his body. That had been the last thing he had felt. You wonder if that man had been scared.
To you, Beomgyu was harmless, you had known him since your elementary days. Sharing your animal crackers and juice boxes. Placing band-aids on each other's knees after falling. You had been with all of these boys that long.
Looking back now, you don’t know when things changed. Maybe they had always been this way, you weren’t sure.
As Soobin placed his head on the table again you took the chance to look over his features. Your eyebrows furrowed in concern as you spot an unfamiliar bruise sprouting just above his left eyebrow.
Everyone else at the table seems absorbed in a conversation about god knows what. You lift your hand to his face, fingertips brushing his hair out of his face and ghosting over the wound.
Soobin opens his eyes to look at you, allowing you to continue examining his face in silence.
“Does it hurt?” you finally mummer.
Soobin lifts his head, “It’s not bad don’t worry.” He smiles as if trying to reassure you that he’s fine. He does it every time his body blossoms a new wound. A new bruise or scar to add to the collection is always accompanied by a soft smile, one that never quite reaches his eyes.
“You should come over after we’re done with our plans , stay away from home for a little while longer.” You mummer to him, fingertips brushing across his cheekbone.
Soobin chuckles and reaches up momentarily brushing your hair off your forehead
“I think that would only make it worse.”
[CUT]
After lunch, everyone goes their separate ways, with the exception of Yeonjun who sticks to your side as you make your way to the only class you two share, Human Anatomy.
The idea of the class alone is enough to make you falter in your steps and Yeonjun is quick to notice, lightly taking your arm and pulling you to the side of the hallway. “Hey,” his voice is soft and full of concern, “you okay? You’re looking a little pale.”
Yeonjun isn’t dumb and he definitely knows what has caused your sudden change in behavior. His eyes switch back and forth between your own, evaluating his options.
Before he has the chance to speak up again you interrupt him. “I’m fine,” You gently remove his hand from your arm and continue walking to class, Yeonjun quickly falling into step beside you. “At least, for now, I am.” A sigh leaves your lips as the two of you enter the classroom.
A detailed diagram of the human face is already displayed by the projector. You pull Yeonjun to the corner of the room, quickly taking two seats in the back. “It’s just, How am I supposed to pretend this morning didn’t happen? What are we going to do Yeonjun? You and I both know this isn’t over and time is ticking.”
Yeonjun slouches into his seat and drags a hand through his hair, “I know, trust me I know. You don’t think I’ve been paranoid all day? I-”
Yeonjun suddenly sneers, and for a moment you thought it was directed towards you, but as you turned you caught the eye of the real reciever, another student who had obviously been listening in on your conversation. He awkwardly looks back and forth between the two of you before deciding to move to the other side of the room; Yeonjun’s cold stare following him the whole way.”
“We should be more careful” you whisper, Yeonjun nodding while sinking down into his seat.
He sits back up seemingly realizing something “What are we going to tell Huening Kai? We can’t let him get involved in this.”
You nod in agreement and turn to face the front as the bell rings. “Trust me, Huening Kai knowing about all this is the last thing any of us want.”
[CUT]
As the final bell of the day rings you let out a sigh, relief filling you for a few seconds before reality dawn on you again. Your day is far from over and you still don’t know how you’re all going to pull this off.
As of right now, the body of the man Beomgyu killed is in Yeonjun’s garage, more specifically the unused deep freeze in his garage. His parents had gone on a re-‘honeymoon trip recommended by their marriage counselor and are due to arrive home today, approximately in 3 hours.
You bite your lip as you mentally go over the plan in your head. You can see Heuning Kai in the corner of your eye, searching for your friends. You quickly pull your phone from your pocket and shoot a message to Taehyun.
‘Need gloves, masks, hats. Think you can get those?’
“Y/n!” Kai runs up to you, quickly pinning you in a hug and spinning the two of you around. Giggles leave your mouth as you beg him to release you. “What the heck kai let me down!”
He’s quick to oblige, smiling brightly at you, and you can’t help but think to yourself just how much you appreciate that smile. “I’m sorry, I just missed you.”
You roll your eyes, ignoring the fact that you had seen him just 3 hours prior at lunch. A notification alerts you to a message on your phone.
Taehyun: ‘I’ve got it covered, Yeonjun and I are on our way to the store to get them now, Soobin and Beom are heading your way now, tell Kai we’ll meet him at his house in a bit.”
You send a quick confirmation text as you hear Beomgyu’s yelling in the distance. Kai smiles again and waves his hand in his direction. Soobin is a few paces behind Beom, a focused look on his face as he types away on his phone.
With a sigh, you follow Kai’s lead and head toward the boys. Soobin places his phone in his back pocket and goes to take your backpack from you, a habit of his that he picked up back in middle school.
As his hand grasps the strap on your right shoulder he pulls you closer, his warm breath hitting your ear and causing your eyes to widen. “I thought of a place to dump the body.”
As Soobin moves back to look you in the eyes your face contorts, confusion taking over your features. “Where?” you mutter out, eyes quickly fleeting over to make sure no one was listening. Lucky for you Huening Kai and Beomgyu are too absorbed in their own conversation to notice the tense conversation you’re currently in.
Soobin adjusts the strap of your backpack before flinging it over his shoulder. “It’s about an hour drive from here, you remember Coyote Canon?”
“Coyote Canon?” You repeat, racking your brain for the familiar name, ‘wait- you mean the campground? Where we had summer camp?’”
Soobin nods, taking a few steps towards the exit, you quickly fall into step with him, glancing back in search of Beomgyu and Kai. Beomgyu catches your eye and shoots you a look. It’s safe to say Kai is completely distracted by their conversation and won’t notice the two of you leaving.
“So it turns out the place was completely abandoned a few years ago.”
You hum in acknowledgement, hands shoved into your pockets as you think. Soobin leads you out the back of the school and to the left, tucked away in the corner commonly referred to by the students as ‘the hot spot’. You lean on the building and focus on Soobin as he does the same. “So you want to dump it there?”
Soobin sighs and runs his bruised hand through his hair, “I’m not sure, like I said the place is abandoned but a conservationist could still be making rounds out there like they used to.”
You nod in agreement, reminiscing on your childhood at the campground. The lake was strictly for fishing due to its high population of snapping turtles and water moccasins. Dip your feet in there and you weren’t guaranteed you’d have all ten toes when you brought them back out. Conservationists regularly made an appearance to check the population of the lake while you attended the camp.
“Yeonjun thinks our best bet would be to take some fuel with us, get some from Taehyun’s dad’s shop, and burn a cabin with the body in it.”
The idea makes you scowl, “is it not bad enough that we’re doing this? Are we trying to start wildfires now too?” You growl out.
Soobin sighs. “I know, this really fucking sucks but what are we going to do? Just let Beomgyu deal with it by himself? You know we can’t do that Y/n.”
Soobin was right, even if you all wanted to back out now you couldn’t, you were accomplices, you’d seen the body first hand, been on the scene of the murder, helped transport the body, you might as well help get rid of it for good, so you can pretend this never happened in the first place.
It was safe to say you’d go to the end of the world for Beomgyu (As you would any of the boys) and this was no exception. It was crazy and you knew most people wouldn’t understand it but Beomgyu was the glue of your group. He was what kept things normal, despite how un-normal these circumstances were. Losing Beomgyu would be like losing family because that’s what you were to each other.
As a kid in elementary Beomgyu was bullied, purely for his lisp and pronunciation of some words. It didn’t help the background he came from, a single mother and older sister, how was he expected to become a man without a male influence in his life? That’s what the other parents gossiped about.
That’s why you got along with Beomgyu though, you had been deemed an outcast the day you began school. Parents pulling their kids away from you and warning them that you were ‘a no good bastard child’. Part of it was true, you suppose. You had absolutely no clue who your father was, and your mother was quite well known and not for the best of reasons.
Taehyun was deemed an outcast for his odd behavior, which really wasn’t all that odd. He was shy and unnaturally good at lying, and a lot of the time bluntly honest even in the worst situations. Soon he joined Beomgyu and you.
Yeonjun and Soobin joined your small group around the same time, Yeonjun being known for causing trouble and fighting, the housewives gossip that it’s because his parents fight all the time, and Soobin, like you, being deemed as ‘bad luck’ after his parent’s divorce, which by society was and is highly frowned upon.
Honestly, no one really knows how Huening Kai ended up with your group. He just kind of showed up one day with Beomgyu. You all knew he hadn’t been outcasted, he had what none of you did, he was normal. Kai deemed himself an outcast when he began hanging out with the rest of you, and this led the rest of society to do so as well.
They were all you had, you were all each other had really. The idea of losing one of you wasn’t even something you had ever thought about but now that the possibility sat right in front of you it was terrifying. Your group had been fine before, but who’s to say that it would be after all of this?
Your eyes began to sting and you made the mistake of locking eyes with Soobin. You quickly looked away and urged the tears to go away. You hate crying, especially in front of the boys.
At the sight of your distraught, Soobin’s expression dropped, and dread filled his stomach. He dropped both of your bags onto the grass and moved closer to you. His large hands gently cupped your face as he urged you to make eye contact with him again. He gently wiped his thumb over your cheekbone, the same motion you had done to him a countless number of times.
Soobin’s eyes shifted between your own. Sincerity shining brightly through them. “We’ll make it through this,” he muttered, “I promise.” Soobin bent down closer to you, face hovering close to yours as your eyes remained locked. He wished he had never gotten you involved in this.
“Woah!”
Beomgyu’s voice is loud as he rounds the corner, Kai hot on his tail.
Soobin’s hands drop from your face as you step back, clearing his throat awkwardly.
“See Kai, I told you we should have given them some more time.” Beom nudges Kai playfully, causing him to snicker.
You roll your eyes at their antics, it wasn’t unusual for the boys to tease you and Soobin. Your relationship was odd, a kind of gray area if you will, yet all the others were convinced it was more, not that either of you ever tried to tell them different anyway.
Soobin picks your bags off the ground and begins walking, with the rest of you following.
“Hey,” Kai calls out “Where's Yeonjun and Tae?”
“They went to the store to get snacks, they said they’d meet us at your house.”
Huening Kai groans, throwing his head back dramatically, “aw mannnn, that means we’re walking.”
You smile at his antics, “C’mon,” You poke his side and he lets out a yelp, “You could use the exercise.”
“Hey!”

It’s okay to be a beginner at the things you are interested in. There is no reason to feel intimidated by people more advanced than you are, because they too were in your place at one point. Keep learning and growing and expanding in whatever it is that you love and let nothing and no one stop you. You don’t have to be at the same stage as someone else. You can just be at your stage and that one is okay too.
