the "oh. oh." moment in fan fic but instead of a character realizing they're in love it's them discovering they have a specific kink at the worst possible moment

my favorite thing about writing valeskacest is how violent i can make all their descriptions of how love feels like because they automatically correlate pain with passion, they're all about the visceral vulnerability of being fucking known

Fandom is great. It's fun to get deeply into a piece of art! You meet cool people! You encounter new ideas!
But when fandom (or other people's artistic works more generally) is your sole source of joy, or entertainment, or community, you run into big problems.
Some actual examples:
Wasting time on a series that you no longer enjoy, because for a long time it and its fandom was the only thing keeping you going.
Staying in a fandom that's turned unpleasant or even toxic, because it's the only space you have to interact with people outside of work/school.
Harassing an artist, actor, or writer because they're ruining the only good thing in your life.
Getting into ship wars and harassing other fans for having a different interpretation.
Taking it extremely personally and getting defensive, even hostile, when people dislike your fandom or favorite media.
Going into an anxious/depressive spiral when AO3 is down and spreading racist conspiracy theories.
Derailing discussions of real world issues to talk about the treatment of fictional characters.
Turning every single conversation to fan talk.
Interpreting all situations, including important scientific and political ones, solely through the lens of fandom.
Fandom is valuable, interesting, and, when done correctly, extremely joyous, and it's easy, especially if the rest of your life isn't going well, to give it your all. But folks, you need hobbies and communities and sources of joy that have nothing to do with fandom.
