11 Popular Flooring Trends for 2022: Hardwood, Vinyl, and More!
When it comes to home renovations like bathroom remodels and kitchen updates, updating your flooring is a great way to change the look of a room. But choosing timeless-but-on-trend flooring can be challenging to get just right.
Thankfully, we know the new and now flooring trends before they even hit the market. Whether you’re remodeling your living room, dining room, or the entire house, we put together the latest flooring trends for 2022 and beyond.
Read on to learn the newest flooring ideas for home remodels and how to incorporate them into your interior design project—from hardwood to carpet tiles and contemporary options like marble.
1. Light Oak
Light oak is a trend we can get behind when it comes to hardwood. It offers a timeless look, commonly used in modern and minimalist designs. Light oak creates an airy look that makes any room feel larger and less cluttered.
Light oak hardwood flooring is a top trend for 2022 and beyond and will leave your home feeling modern, open, and blissfully bright. Beyond its superior visual appearance, light wood is also an excellent choice for homes with kids and pets, since light oak doesn’t show scuffs as easily as darker colors.

  2. Wood Parquet
Another hardwood trend, parquet flooring, is a geometric and angular mosaic of wood pieces used for decorative effect. While originally popular in the 60s, parquet flooring has since come back in style and creates a bold, high-end aesthetic to any room. Parquet flooring patterns come in squares, triangles, and other repeating shapes. This hardwood flooring trend is a creative way to add depth to any room with these simple but stunning accent designs.
Popular parquet hardwood flooring designs include chevron, checkerboard, echelle, and herringbone, to name just a few. Whichever pattern you choose, parquet hardwood will turn a simple room layout into a breathtaking geometric look that will be in style for years to come.
3. Rigid-Core Vinyl
When it comes to vinyl flooring, there are good, better, and best options. Vinyl flooring has developed significantly in recent years and now comes in a resilient, waterproof material that’s considered luxury vinyl. While vinyl may be known solely as an inexpensive flooring style, it doesn’t mean that it can’t look great in its own right and stand the test of time.
Vinyl now has superb design qualities that are difficult to distinguish from stone, wood, and tile. The luxury category of vinyl is more resilient than ever before, but it’s also more visually similar to the real deal. Specifically, rigid-core vinyl is engineered with a core construction to give it added stability. Because of this, high-end vinyl is climbing in popularity with its desirable characteristics and surprising affordability.
4. Carpet Tiles
Say goodbye to plush carpets and hello to carpet runners and tiles—otherwise known as modular rugs. Carpet trends have been changing in recent years. Today, many homeowners are choosing hardwood over traditional carpets in their living rooms and communal spaces. But carpet tiles offer a customizable flooring accent.
You can add carpet tiles to your living room to create a colorful rug or to your bedrooms for an easy-to-clean flooring accent. Carpet runners can be placed in your hallways to add depth and your stairs for added safety. The best part of this new carpet trend is that you can customize your look and swap styles whenever inspiration strikes.
5. Polished Concrete
Concrete flooring isn’t your average unfinished basement concrete. You may be surprised to find out that indoor concrete comes in various colors and styles. For a mid-century modern design look that’s minimal and earthy, choose polished concrete for your home’s flooring.
Not only does concrete look amazing, but it also offers several benefits. For starters, concrete flooring is often more cost-effective than hardwood. Not only that, but concrete is highly durable and overall extremely low-maintenance.
6. Marble Tiles
Marble flooring casts a sophisticated design aesthetic, perfect for your living room, kitchen, and entryways. While marble flooring may be a style from the past, it’s making a huge comeback and will be a popular trend for the foreseeable future.
Marble tiles create a modern space that feels open and oh-so-elegant. When installed in your bathrooms, you can create a resort experience for you and your guests to enjoy. Or, add it to your entryways to set the scene from the moment your guests enter your home.
“On a basic level, I just love the look of marble. But, more specifically, I appreciate the visual contrast it brings into a space, the uniqueness of each marble piece, and the level of craftsmanship that goes into creating a piece of marble decor.” — Karina L, Senior Visual Stylist at Modsy.

7. Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT)
Vinyl isn’t just competing with wood flooring, but it’s also entered into the competition with other flooring types like stone and tile. Vinyl tile, also called luxury vinyl tile (LVT), offers the visual qualities of wood and stone at a much more affordable price. Because of its resilience and visual attributes, vinyl tile is a top flooring trend in 2022.
But what’s the difference between rigid-core vinyl and LVT? Rigid core includes a polymer-based core layer that gives the flooring a more rigid characteristic. This means LVT allows for a more realistic look while rigid core offers superior stability and dent resistance. Both are great options for a more affordable flooring option than natural wood or stone. Choose between different patterns, textures, and qualities to find the look you want at a price that fits your flooring budget.
8. Woven Bamboo
Bamboo flooring has evolved into one of the most significant segments of the wood flooring industry. Like wood, bamboo floors can be solid or engineered and come in different styles and plank sizes. Additionally, bamboo flooring is more affordable and durable than most other wood flooring options.
Bamboo floor styles include horizontal, vertical, and woven or stranded types. Unlike wood flooring, bamboo is technically a grass, making it more eco-friendly. Bamboo is fast-growing and offers a more renewable hardwood source than trees. Woven bamboo is a great flooring option for those who prefer tropical, natural decor.

9. Reclaimed Wood
If you’re looking for something even more eco-friendly than bamboo, choose reclaimed wood for your wood flooring. Reclaimed wood is a great flooring choice—from the beauty to the history and charm. Of the many reasons reclaimed wood is a popular choice, the most significant is that it features a time-weathered patina, making every board unique.
While a reclaimed wood floor comes with its weathered history, you can stain it in various colors, from light to dark. Additionally, you can finish it with a transparent stain to protect its natural look. However you use it, reclaimed wood gives you the look, uniqueness, sustainability, and affordability many people want in 2022.
  10. Luxury Laminate
Laminate flooring is made to imitate solid hardwood. It’s one of the best wood alternative options on the market as it’s easy to maintain, is durable for long-term use, and looks fantastic. Luxury laminate is also waterproof, making it safe to use in bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms.
When it comes to laminate vs. vinyl flooring, laminate has a thicker composition that includes wood content, making it feel warmer and softer. Choose from various laminate design patterns, including wide plank and light wood, that more closely resemble natural wood or stone.
11. Renewable Cork
Cork originates from the bark of the cork oak tree. Cork flooring is sustainable, given that the bark grows back repeatedly. It also features many flooring benefits, like being naturally resistant to mold, durable for years of use, and fire-resistant.
Cork flooring is available in various finishes to match the style you want. In addition, you can use it as an underlayment for hardwood, laminate, and ceramic tiles to reduce noise and create a more comfortable flooring.
Flooring Trend FAQs for 2022 and Beyond
In addition to the top 11 flooring trends for 2022, we’ve answered some of the most frequently asked questions about flooring trends.
From new home fads to flooring colors, find the answers to these top flooring trend questions to help you on your next flooring project.
What Is the Most Popular Flooring for New Homes?
Hardwood is the most popular flooring for new homes and renovations. While there are some fantastic contemporary flooring concepts like concrete and marble to choose from, hardwood continues to outperform all other flooring trends. Specifically, light hardwood tones like blonde, white, and maple are the top color choices currently. We expect to see this continue throughout 2022 and into 2023.
What Are the Top Floor Color Trends?
Blonde, cool-toned floor colors are the most popular currently, with warm tones coming in a close second. These colors match previous years’ trends, with 38% of people wanting cool tones in 2021. Muted flooring such as light oak hardwood offers an airy style that makes any room feel larger and less cluttered. That said, many are choosing to go back to the deeper brown colors in recent months for a more cozy design aesthetic.
What Are the Top Dining Room Flooring Trends?
Luxury vinyl tiles and natural hardwood are trending for dining room remodels. This flooring trend is particularly prevalent in modern, casual, and rustic-inspired dining areas. Additionally, many prefer a worn look to create a more welcoming environment in their dining area, which you can achieve with both vinyl and hardwood.

Things to Consider before Purchasing a Rug for Your Home
When decorating a room, you need to choose the right pieces of furniture. One thing people often neglect to get or don’t put too much thought into is their rug.
Tumblr media
However, a rug should not be an afterthought when decorating. It should be seen as a centerpiece as it holds the entire room’s look together. If you are shopping for a rug, there are a few things that you need to consider.
Budget
One of the first things you need to decide when shopping for a rug is how much you can afford to spend. Sure, you can turn the entire room into a sea of color and splendor, but keep in mind that having a rug that costs a fortune may not be practical.
Luckily, rugs come in all price ranges. Some may be more affordable than others. So it is best to plan out a budget that you are willing to spend. We suggest that you do some research to know the average price for rugs, so you can tell whether you are over budgeting or under budgeting.
Size
Of course, you need to be aware of the size of the room. One thing you should avoid is buying a rug that is too big for the room. It is better to have a rug that is a little small than too big, as it may not look as balanced.
If you are not sure how to measure the room to know the size, it is best to include your furniture in the measurements. Try to include the armchairs and table in the measurements as well. If the rug is a lot bigger than the furniture or room, it may make the room look overcrowded, so you don’t want that.
Design
Perhaps the most important thing you should consider is which design you are going to choose. Design is a huge factor when it comes to rugs. You want to get a rug that fits the theme of the room. It doesn’t matter if you are getting a Persian rug or a Western rug; you still want the design to fit the theme of the room.
If the room is Asian or Middle Eastern-themed, you should consider getting a rug with a traditional Persian design or a Chinese design. If the room is a Western-themed room, you can get a more modern rug. It is best to find a rug that matches your room’s theme.
Durability
You will also need to consider the durability of the rug. The rug is something you are going to be spending a lot of time with. You want to get a rug that can handle your daily use.
Try to find something that is more durable. It is best to buy something that can withstand wear and tear.
Maintenance
When it comes to rugs, there are things you need to know about cleaning. Some rugs can be hand-washed, while others are easier to clean when you have to wash them by machine.
You need to know what the rug needs for cleaning before you get one. Perhaps you have a lot of pets. If that is the case, you need to get something that is easier to maintain, so you don’t have to do a lot of work cleaning your rug.
Conclusion
When it comes to choosing the right rug, you need to consider the budget, the size, the design, the durability, and maintenance. If you can address all of these areas, you will be able to find the perfect rug. Something that will match the theme of your room, fit the room perfectly and be something that can handle your daily use.

Bringing Pride Home: An Interview With Three of Our Favorite LGBTQ+-Run Brands
At Modsy, we believe that better-designed spaces lead to happier lives, and the happiest homes celebrate the individuals who live in them. So this Pride Month, we’re partnering with some of our favorite LGBTQ+-owned businesses and giving YOU the chance to celebrate your uniqueness and bring Pride home in a giveaway running on our Instagram from June 3–5, 2022!
In addition to hosting the giveaway on our IG feed, we wanted to highlight each brand involved in the giveaway by learning more about their founders. We chatted about their stories and discussed what Pride means to them and their businesses. Keep reading to get the scoop on each, and learn why we love them and what they do!
Laura Moffet, Co-Founder of Kirrin Finch
Laura (right) and Kelly (left), her partner in life and business
Tell us a bit about your company.
Kirrin Finch is a conscientious clothing company that creates menswear-inspired apparel designed to fit a wide range of women and non-binary folks. The brand began when my partner Kelly and I decided we were no longer willing to settle for ill-fitting menswear and overly frilly womenswear.
We wanted to break down gender boundaries in fashion by making great-fitting clothing that gives people confidence and helps them feel comfortable in their own skin. We started with a vision of the perfect-fitting menswear-inspired button-up shirt. We then expanded our offerings to a full range of clothing and accessories, including our best-selling line of suiting.
What do you most enjoy about being an LGBTQ+-owned business?
LGBTQ+ businesses were considered to be niche for the longest time. But when we started our business, it was essential to serve our community by providing a product that addressed their specific needs and solved any pain points for them.
Our business has grown as the world has become more accepting and open to LGBTQ+ folks. So now, we really enjoy connecting with more customers and providing them with something they haven’t been able to find before.
Clothes by Kirrin Finch
What would you say your brand and Modsy have in common?
Our customer is someone who’s struggled to find clothing that makes them feel
confident and comfortable. Our goal is to remove the obstacles they might face shopping from traditional retailers by providing clothing that helps them feel more authentic.
Modsy helps people live happier lives by eliminating the hassle of the interior design process with 3D visualization so their customers can have a foolproof design experience. As a result, both our brands offer people easier ways to live fuller lives.
What does Pride mean to you and your business?
We understand that Pride has become a bigger deal as more and more companies release Pride collections, putting more eyeballs on the LGBTQ+ community. But we must put the majority of focus on LGBTQ+ people and businesses so they can get the recognition and support they deserve. It’s also essential that we remember there is still a long way to go on the road to equality. After all, Pride is a time for activism and raising awareness.

David Krause, Co-Founder of Alder New York
Nina and David, co-founders of Alder New York
Tell us a bit about your company.
Alder New York was founded by myself and my co-founder, Nina Zilka. We’re a queer and woman-owned independent skincare brand based in (where else?) New York. We make clean, vegan products designed to work for all skin types, no matter your age, gender, or ethnicity. We believe that skincare shouldn’t be complicated, and you shouldn’t need an esthetician’s license to have great skin.
What do you most enjoy about being an LGBTQ+-owned business?
I enjoy not just serving fellow members of the LGBTQ+ community but also allies and other marginalized communities. We love when our clean, vegan, genderless skincare makes someone feel and look amazing. They don’t feel judged, uncomfortable, or stereotyped—they just feel good in their own skin.
Alder New York’s Nourishing Cream
What would you say your brand and Modsy have in common?
We are all about making personal care beautiful and functional without adding any stress to your routine. We think Modsy has that same view for their customers when it comes to their home’s interior design.
What does Pride mean to you and your business?
Pride is about being visible and proud of our queer identities. As a queer business owner, Pride is about celebrating both our trials and triumphs with our community, which feels relevant today more than ever.

Jocelyn Drew, Co-Founder of Bijou Candles
Jocelyn (right), and Alaina (Left), married couple and co-founders of Bijou Candles
Tell us a bit about your company.
My wife Alaina and I started Bijou Candles shortly after tying the knot. We had a vision of marrying our dual love of pop culture and incredible scents. Bijou’s inspiration comes from our obsession with all things pop culture, all things witchy, and all things women’s empowerment. So our candles are inspired by women in pop culture history, and they carry the moniker of their iconic namesakes.
What do you most enjoy about being an LGBTQ+-owned business?
We believe one of the most important things is visibility for our community. We hope that by putting ourselves out there as an LGBTQ+-run small business, we can help inspire people like us to pursue their passions.
Bijou Candles’ 90s Icons candle set
What would you say your brand and Modsy have in common?
Modsy and Bijou Candles both understand that people want their personal style reflected in their homes. We both offer products and services that help make interior design and self-expression more accessible.
What does Pride mean to you and your business?
As a married, queer couple that runs a business together, Pride means so much to us. We are proud that small businesses in America can take on many different forms. And the people who run those businesses don’t have to fit into traditional boxes to be successful. We definitely take a lot of inspiration from LGBTQ+ culture and are so proud to be able to spread our inspiration around and help others feel seen and understood.

Choose Neutral Tones
Modern dining rooms tend to feature neutral tones, especially when it comes to foundational furniture like your dining room table and chairs. While neutral tones build the base of a modern room, you can add pops of color and asymmetrical decor pieces to add depth. You can do this by adding an accent wall featuring a dark color, asymmetrical light fixtures, or a rug that steals the show.
Add an Extendable Table
Modern dining rooms are all about utilizing the latest and greatest furniture staples. This includes choosing a sleek, modern extendable table as your centerpiece. An extendable table allows you to expand your table space for entertaining when the moment strikes, keeping you prepared for any dining room event. Plus, it’s easy to retract for a more compact everyday table.

Incorporate Organic Accents
Organic accents can add life and color to your dining room space, depending on the contemporary style you prefer. These accents will keep your area minimal while breaking up neutral tones with pops of color or unique shapes. Organic accents can include potted plants, faux plants in decorative vases, or even organic wall art.
Elevate Your Space With Mirrors
Add mirrors to elevate your space for a more modern dining room with unique fixtures. Mirrors add a dramatic yet classic look to your dining room, reflecting contemporary decor’s bold but clean appeal. Whether you choose horizontal or asymmetrical, mirrors can help elevate your dining room space.

Add Earthy Details
Adding earthy details will create a welcoming environment for casual dining, from leafy foliage to unique print art and organic green accents. These fixtures keep your design open and airy, plus add color that draws in the eye and pairs well with neutral decor. Incorporate multiple earthy details to set the scene for a relaxing dining experience.
Showcase Woodwork
https://www.modsy.com/design-ideas/dining-room/rustic/welcoming-woodwork
To create a simple space for dining, add a welcoming organic feel with soft woodwork. While simple in style, unique woodwork looks captivating against greenery and neutral tones while enforcing a simple dining layout. With woodwork, the options are endless—from your dining room table to accents like table centerpieces and print frames.
Incorporate Games
Casual dining means having some fun with your space. For a non-traditional yet casual dining area, add game room decor like chess and checkers for decor and entertaining purposes. These pieces can act as your colorful accents while showcasing the relaxed room setting. Plus, transitioning from dining to entertaining will be a breeze.
Choose a Bench
Shop This Look
The key to a casual dining room is to add seating that invites guests to get comfortable. You can incorporate informal dining seating with a dining room bench or even a settee to encourage casual conversation. Even when placed separately from the dining table, these elements function as a casual sitting area when hosting guests.
Formal Dining Room Ideas
Shop This Look
When modern and casual aren’t what you’re looking for, a traditional dining room may best suit you. A formal dining room incorporates classic staples that emit sophistication through neutral palettes with white and cream.
From symmetrical layouts to architectural details, the traditional dining rooms echo the formality of dining with class. See our top formal dining room ideas below to create a timeless style.

Achieve Harmony
Formal dining rooms give a welcoming yet predictable feeling. They feature all the classic dining fixtures you would expect, like a traditional dining table and classic lighting, with patterns like stripes and florals. However, choosing rich tones and keeping the color palette bright will help balance the formality and make it more harmonious.
To achieve a traditional style, you’ll need to develop this harmony through all of your pieces by carefully paring colors and accents.  Stick to traditional light fixtures, like chandeliers and wall sconces, and room accents, like table centerpieces and large rugs, to ensure the same cohesion from one side of the room to the other.
Keep it Symmetrical
Shop This Look
Symmetry creates a sense of visual balance which is essential in creating a formal dining room that showcases balance and order. Visual symmetry will ensure your dining room conveys elegance at all times. To create symmetry, design your dining room table proportional to your chairs, balance consoles with large-scale art, and, if you choose wall sconces, ensure they create balance around architectural details and motifs.
Echo Your Architecture
Shop This Look
Many formal dining rooms feature millwork like crown molding, wainscotting, ornamental wall molding, or even built-ins—giving your space an added sense of sophistication. When designing a formal dining room, use those architectural details as a jumping-off point with your decor. Echo the formality of your architecture by choosing refined statement pieces that do all the talking, from your art to your tabletop decor and light fixtures. That means repeating motifs to echo your shapes and patterns throughout your dining area.
Incorporate Classic White
The classic white dining room may be traditional, but it’s still oh-so-stunning. The color white is crisp and bright, echoing the sophisticated style of a formal dining room. If you want to add some pops of color, nothing is more classic than a blue and white color palette. From cream-colored dining chairs to a light-finished table, this neutral color palette will help achieve the traditional dining room you’ve always wanted, fit for entertaining guests and hosting dinner parties.

With an interior design service like Modsy, an expert can help give you recommendations and guide you to ensure everything is just right. Plus, implementing your dining room renovation design has never been easier with the ability to purchase all your fixtures, furniture, and decor in one place.
What can I change my dining room to?
If you don’t use your dining room and are looking to create something new with your space, there are many layout concepts to consider to construct an entirely new space from an empty dining room. Options like a reading nook, game space, home office, and lounge area are just a few ideas to consider.
Since dining rooms are often located between the kitchen and the living room, your old space can be transformed into a transitional dining room—connecting all of your critical communal areas for entertaining.
How much does it cost to build a dining room?
The cost of building or renovating a dining room truly depends on the fixtures and layout you choose. Of course, starting from scratch will be more costly than renovating your current space. The cost of building a dining room also depends on if you decide to outsource the work or do it yourself. DIYing your dining room can save you money, but it’s helpful to consult with an expert first. Check out our design packages to see how Modsy can bring your vision to life.

Flower Power: The Botanical Wallpaper Trend Taking the Design World by Storm
Spring has sprung outside—and it’s also blossoming inside with a fun and bold botanical trend. Floral and botanical wallpaper is having a MOMENT in the interior design world. Biophilic design hit the top trends list in 2021 and continues to go strong, so it makes sense that botanical wallpaper is trending, as it’s a great way to incorporate biophilic elements into your home design and bring the outside in.
Floral and plant prints can help exemplify a variety of design styles—from classic formal and traditional to retro-inspired and contemporary looks. It all depends on the scale, colors, and style of the florals you choose.
While there are endless options out there for floral and botanical wallpaper prints, our designers have picked out their top 10 favorite botanical wallpaper designs. Keep scrolling to see these prints in action!
1. A Bold Vintage Aesthetic
Shop This Look
If you’re looking for a classic and timeless botanical wallpaper design, this is it. The dense design of this wallpaper, with the bird and botanical motif, is filled with details and colors that captivate the eye, infusing the room with energy and delight. Vintage-inspired and artistic, we love how this design acts almost like a piece of large-scale art in this room.
The Wallpaper: Strawberry Thief by Morris & Co.
This wallpaper pattern is perfect for…
Modern traditional spaces where you want to make a big visual statement. The design is definitely vintage-inspired, but the somewhat eclectic nature of the pattern gives it a more modern vibe.
2. A Walk in the Garden
Shop This Look
This botanical wallpaper design brings to mind a calming stroll through an English garden, among flowering trees and chirping birds. A delicate pattern, it works well when paired with solid colors. In this space, we pulled the greens from the wallpaper for the paint on the lower half of the walls and trim. The result is a refreshing, welcoming bedroom design.
The Wallpaper: Eugen Oat by Sandberg
This wallpaper pattern is perfect for…
Bedrooms, dining rooms, and home offices, where you want to add a traditional-but-unique design element.

3. When Life Gives You Lemons
Shop This Look
Want to add a delightfully fresh and spring-like feel to your space? Give this cheerful lemon-print wallpaper a try! This is a great example of a botanical wallpaper that’s not a floral print. After all, botanicals can reference any type of plant, not just flowers! We love that this lemon print has a watercolor quality to it and that it incorporates leaves and branches as well as lemons for a more dynamic pattern.
The Wallpaper: Lemon Tree by Morris & Co.
This wallpaper pattern is perfect for…
Breakfast nooks, kitchens, or really any sun-filled space where you want to add a dose of cheer! This light-hearted pattern is perfect for classic and eclectic design styles.
4. Vintage, But Make it Moody
Shop This Look
This wallpaper is a great way to combine two trends: botanical wallpaper and moody spring colors. This ornate vintage-inspired pattern features a high-contrast navy and white palette that has a bold appeal. We love the way it makes this bedroom feel moody and cozy, adding the perfect dose of character and charm to the space.
The Wallpaper: Pure Strawberry Thief by Morris & Co.
This wallpaper pattern is perfect for…
Classic and traditional spaces, particularly bedrooms and powder rooms. The flowers and birds in the print create a very classical feel—but when paired with modern forms and natural materials it can also create a delightfully eclectic look!
5. Butterfly in the Sky
Shop This Look
Butterflies are a common addition to botanical motifs. The colorful butterflies take center stage in this pattern, while the delicate flower and leaf patterns, illustrated in gold, take a back seat. The result is a soft and whimsical design. We love that it’s a simple pattern—but with bright pops of color.
The Wallpaper: Papillon by York Wallcoverings via Anthropologie
This wallpaper pattern is perfect for…
Adding a classic and youthful touch to any space. It’s obviously beautiful in this Regency-inspired bedroom—but it would also be a great addition to a kids bedroom or bathroom.
6. Modern Chinoiserie
Shop This Look
This whimsical wallpaper has classical chinoiserie vibes, with the fruit and flowering trees in the design creating a spring and summer feel! We love that this design has a delicate, hand-painted feel to it that makes it feel very custom and high-end.
The Wallpaper: Blossom Chinoiserie Grasscloth Mural by Anthropologie
This wallpaper pattern is perfect for…
Large walls. This is a colorful pattern, but it has a lot of negative space, making it great for larger applications, particularly in a classic formal space.
7. Best Fronds
Shop This Look
Made by Swedish wallpaper designers, this nature-inspired wallpaper features a classic Scandinavian motif with a variety of ferns. This pattern offers another take on botanical wallpaper that we love: leafy greens with ferns galore! The simple color palette keeps it visually clean and approachable, and it’s a perfect way to compliment sage green millwork, like in the bedroom above.
The Wallpaper: Herbal Moss by Borstapeter via Anthropologie
This wallpaper pattern is perfect for…
Classic and traditional-style spaces that have a grounded, earthy aesthetic. It’s a great pattern for a full-room application (vs. just an accent wall) because of the way the pattern is a bit more spaced out, with more white space in the background.
8. Mid-Century Whimsy
Shop This Look
Design a space with retro flair with this whimsical, oversized botanical wallpaper. The combination of the playful botanicals and muted pastels gives this design a very 60s vibe, which is a fun way to give any room an extra dose of personality.
The Wallpaper: Humming Marsh by Anthropologie
This wallpaper pattern is perfect for…
Accent walls in eclectic and boho spaces where you want to add a bold, playful element to the overall design.
9. Traditional Neutrals
Shop This Look
We love the neutral-on-neutral design of this botanical wallpaper. The low-contrast pattern offers a sense of calm, despite the busy pattern. And how cute are those acorns sprinkled in among the oak leaves? This wallpaper pattern has a true nature-inspired vibe that feels warm and welcoming.
The Wallpaper: Pure Acorn by Morris & Co.
This wallpaper pattern is perfect for…
Traditional-inspired spaces where you want some added visual interest without it being too “loud.” This neutral-toned pattern strikes the perfect balance, adding visual appeal while keeping things neutral. It’s a great choice for dining rooms and home offices.
10. Underwater Adventures
Shop This Look
Not all botanical designs are made up of land plants, as this underwater-inspired botanical wallpaper proves. With its deep blue and orange color palette, this bold, high-contrast pattern adds a ton of visual depth to any space it’s in (especially with the blue-on-blue tonality). The goldfish add a fun, quirky touch to this wallpaper design!
The Wallpaper: Ocean Reverie by Anthropologie
This wallpaper pattern is perfect for…
Eclectic and boho spaces. Because of the goldfish motif in this wallpaper design, we love the idea of using it in a bathroom—but it’s also great for a boho bedroom, as you can see in the design above!

5. Incorporate a Garden
Gardens are one of the many beautiful focal points of a backyard. Whether you plant flowers, vegetables, or even trees, a little greenery can help create a backyard aesthetic that feels welcoming.
The fun part about backyard gardens is that they can be anything you want them to be. Want a garden bed that’s a little less traditional? Go for a winding bed that helps separate the many areas of your yard.
6. Include a Pond
Elevate your garden area even further by adding a pond or fountain that can help draw eyes to the greenery. Not only does a pond look stunning, but it also attracts wildlife like birds and frogs to add a little extra life to your yard.
If a garden isn’t for you, your pond or fountain can act as the foliage of your backyard. Water can help your yard feel like an outdoor oasis, especially in urban areas.
7. Add Family-Fun Games
Shop This Look
Seating and greenery aren’t the only important things to create a backyard fit for entertainment. Family-fun games can encourage play for kids and adults alike, livening up your yard.
There are a variety of outdoor games you can choose from. Popular options include giant Jenga and Chess, cornhole, badminton, or even a soccer or basketball area if your yard permits. Be sure to choose games that everyone can play so you’re prepared for gatherings of all kinds—like a kid’s birthday party or a dinner party.
8. Build a Tree Swing
Most of us have fond memories of playing on a tree swing growing up. A tree swing is an amusing pastime that doesn’t just have to live in the past. Incorporate a tree swing in your backyard for guests to enjoy.
The best part of a tree swing is that it doesn’t have to be fancy. In fact, all you need is some rope and a wooden swing for endless fun.
9. Install a Projector
There are many other activities that adults and kids can enjoy besides actual games. After all, who doesn’t enjoy movies? A projector is the perfect evening activity to wind down and relax a little. Seat yourself on an outdoor rug or watch from your patio for a family-fun outdoor activity that everyone will enjoy.
10. Set Up a Hammock
If you’re looking for something a little more inclusive for adults and kids but similarly enjoyable, a hammock can be a great alternative or pairing to a tree swing. The great part is you can assemble a hammock with or without trees depending on the product you choose.
Imagine relaxing on your hammock, reading a book, or looking up at the night sky. Sounds tranquil, doesn’t it? Not only are they comfortable, but they’re also aesthetically pleasing and can pair well with your backyard design.
11. Hang String Lights
Shop This Look
When designing a backyard for entertainment purposes, you’ll need to keep both daytime and nighttime activities in mind. String lights are an essential backyard design element for hosting guests in the evening.
String lights can be strung up above your patio to illuminate the party and cast a relaxing glow to set the evening scene. Check out our festive outdoor living design gallery to inspire your lighting.
12. Create a Conversation Nook
Connecting with family and friends is one of the most important aspects of designing a backyard meant for entertaining. A conversation nook can create a space for you and your guests to connect over conversation and drinks.
It’s important to note that the way you arrange your space can play a key role in creating a conversation nook. Be sure to provide ample seating that faces each other for the best setup.
13. Include a Hot Tub
Ahh, the relaxing bubbling of a hot tub. If you’ve ever dreamed of lounging in a hot tub after a long day, now’s your time to make it a reality! A hot tub can be a great design staple that offers endless calming evenings with family and friends—or even solo.
14. Install Speakers
When looking to host people in your backyard, music is an essential component. Installing weatherproof speakers will ensure that you’re always prepared to play some tunes when the moment is right.
With a little planning, you can even connect your speakers up to your projector for better movie sound quality in seconds.
15. Construct a Greenhouse
A greenhouse can be a beautiful design component for your dream backyard. Whether you use it for gardening or an enclosed dining area is up to you, but either will make a wonderful addition to a backyard design for entertaining guests.
Greenhouses are great because they visually keep your yard open while keeping you or your plants safe from insects and weather.
16. Build a Snack Bar
You can’t entertain guests without snacks on hand. Incorporating a snack bar or bar cart into your yard can be both visually appealing and useful. Whether you’re hosting a party or relaxing with close family, a snack bar is perfect for a mid-day treat. And if your cart is on wheels, you can simply move it into the garage when not in use to protect it from the elements.
17. Hang Privacy Curtains
Many people appreciate their privacy, which makes fencing or privacy curtains a must. Hang privacy curtains around your dining area or conversation nook to create a more intimate setting where you and your guests feel comfortable.
Outdoor curtains are usually thin and breezy so as not to block out too much light. Along with keeping your yard more private, they also offer an opportunity to enhance your design aesthetic and match your decor.
FAQs About Backyard Entertainment Ideas
Now that you have some backyard inspiration, you may be ready to get started on the design of your dreams. When considering how to build an outdoor entertainment area, read these frequently asked questions about designing a backyard fit for fun.
What should every backyard have?
While every backyard design will be unique to fit your personality and needs, there are some essentials every backyard should have. Fun things to put in your backyard include:
Seating: Any entertainment area should have some form of seating. When it comes to outdoor furniture, a patio set or conversation nook is a great start.
Firepit: There’s something so communal about gathering around a fire pit. From roasting marshmallows to playing guitar, a firepit is a great element for entertaining.
Lighting: The lighting of an area can affect the mood of the occasion, which makes it so important for a backyard designed for fun. Choose between string lights, tiki torches, or whatever lighting best matches the style you’re looking for.
How do you make a small backyard fun?
It can be challenging to create the backyard of your dreams with only a small patio area to work with—but it’s not impossible with the help of design experts! When the space is used efficiently, even a small backyard can become a great entertainment area.
A rule of thumb is to get strategic with measuring. Divide your yard into your most important sections, such as the eating, activity, and conversation areas. Laying out the size of your furniture in relation to your section sizes can ensure you put every part of your small backyard to use.
How can I make my backyard more entertaining?
Creating a backyard designed for entertaining is a fun project with infinite possibilities. Your backyard should match the activities you enjoy most. For example, if you’re looking to eat outside more, a patio set is a must.
Likewise, if you create an activity area be sure to fill it with the games you enjoy playing most. This way you’ll be more likely to use your backyard for entertaining as much as possible. And, of course, you can use the above 17 backyard ideas to create a space you love.
Design the Backyard of Your Dreams

Important Things to Consider When Purchasing an Antique Rug
Important Things to Consider When Purchasing an Antique Rug
Antique rugs may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you are trying to look for things to improve the aesthetics of your indoor spaces, but make no mistake about it, they are as stylish as any other form of rugs.
Of course, implementing them with the correct theme and placement is still the key to achieving a great look; however, most of the effects may be decided during the selection phase, meaning that you may have to consider a couple of things before buying an antique rug.
To ensure that you would buy only the best, below are some helpful tips to keep in mind.
Tumblr media
Its Material
This is probably the first thing that you have to consider when buying an antique rug. The material being used gives it its unique look, so knowing the fabric will help you decide if it is one you should buy.
To do this, it would be important that you do some research on your own or have a reputable seller tell you what fabric is the right one for your theme.
Its Size
An antique rug may have been used before, and this would mean that it is not actually the perfect size any more. This is another factor you should include in your considerations because a rug that is too small or too large for your room may not be ideal.
This is especially true if your space is really small because a large rug may make it look even smaller. Bringing a tape measure wouldn’t hurt, nor would a measured diagram of your floor space.
Its Condition
This is also another important consideration to take before buying an antique rug. While its condition is not an absolute deal-breaker, you should be aware that old rugs may have suffered a lot of wear and tear, and you should be prepared with the necessary materials to restore them.
You should also be prepared with a budget if the rug has to be restored or if you have to purchase another rug if restoration is impossible.
The Level of Difficulty to Clean It
It is also important to think about how you would clean the rug after a spill or an accident. If it is really difficult to clean, it would be wise to look for another rug instead. You may also want to consider having it cleaned by a professional to be sure that it would be preserved in your home.
Its Color
The color of your rug will also have a big impact on your own space, so make sure that it would not totally look out of place. It should still be able to complement the theme, and it should still be toned down when compared to the spectrum in the room.
You also have to think about its color intensity and if it would not be too muted or too bright.
Conclusion
After weighing all the factors above, an antique rug would definitely be a great selection for anyone who is looking to improve their indoor space. Of course, there is no need to change or renovate the spot; you may just use the rug to add some character to it or even create a specific theme altogether.
However, one thing that you should keep in mind is to keep the rug clean and maintain it properly so that it will last you a lifetime.

13 Bathroom Remodel Ideas on a Budget
If you’ve ever thought, “We really need to do something with this bathroom,” you’re not alone! Many homeowners become overwhelmed at the thought of remodeling their bathrooms. Where do you even begin? Since the cost of a bathroom renovation can slowly sneak up on you, it’s essential to put a plan and design together before you get started.
We put together 13 ideas for how to remodel your bathroom on a budget. From installing affordable alternatives like vinyl and wainscot to DIY-ing accents like your mirror and vanity, these tips will ensure your home renovation design stays within budget.
When looking for the most cost-effective ways to renovate your bathroom, follow these 13 bathroom remodel ideas, plus additional design tips, to help keep your renovation affordable and oh-so-stunning.
1. Install Inexpensive Flooring
Bathroom flooring is a good first step to consider when renovating. But with so many choices, it can be hard to know which type of flooring is both cost-effective and durable enough to stand the test of time. While many renovations include tile or stone, vinyl and laminate offer a more affordable flooring option. These cheaper options can give you the look you want at a more affordable price—though it’s important to consider that they might not last quite as long.
2. Paint Your Walls
There’s nothing like a fresh coat of paint to brighten up your bathroom space. Painting your walls is a cost-effective way to completely change the look of your space. When it comes to bathrooms, light neutral tones help give more depth to your space. This is especially true for bathrooms that don’t have natural light. Have an eclectic taste and prefer something less minimal? Paint an accent wall, apply wallpaper, or add a backsplash for a pop of color.

3. Refinish the Tub
Bathroom tubs can diminish with years of constant use—it’s only natural. But before you spend the money to reinstall a brand new tub, consider if you can refinish your current one instead. It’s a good idea to seek expert help, but if it’s not in the budget and you have a bit of experience, you can refinish your bathtub yourself.
Refinishing a bathtub and shower requires sanding, priming, and using epoxy resin to recoat the tub. It’s a long and challenging project, but if done correctly, refinishing your bathtub versus replacing it can save you a lot of money on your bathroom remodel.
4. Utilize Laminate Countertops
While granite and marble countertops look amazing, they can sometimes lean toward the more expensive side. Thankfully, there are more inexpensive options, like using laminate or faux marble contact paper. Though laminate may not last quite as long as natural stone countertops, there are many benefits such as simple installation, easy maintenance, and many design options to choose from.
Though, as with any more affordable option, It’s also important to weigh the negatives. Keep in mind that laminate countertops can be more susceptible to burns, chipping, and delamination over time. However, all in all, laminate countertops offer an inexpensive bathroom remodel compared to natural stone.
5. Refurbish Your Vanity
The right vanity can take your bathroom from just okay to absolutely stunning. But a new bathroom vanity can consume a large chunk of your remodeling budget. A great way to get the look you want for less is to refurbish your current vanity to match the style you’re looking for.
While putting a new coat of paint can help elevate your current look, you can also use other furniture around the house to match the structural design you want. Turn an old dresser into a rustic bathroom vanity with a little bit of creativity, or transform a TV stand into a modern furnishing—the options are endless.

6. Fix Necessary Plumbing
When it comes to bathroom remodels, it can be challenging to resist the urge to replace just about everything. The key to staying within your budget is to prioritize only the necessary plumbing fixes. This means leaving fixtures with water supply where they are, including your toilet and sink. Instead, focus your budget on broken fixtures, pipes, and fittings to ensure your newly renovated bathroom is working properly.
7. Add a Mirror Frame
Mirrors can be an expensive bathroom component, but there are ways to update your current mirror without going over budget. One great way to do this is to reframe your current mirror instead of purchasing a new one. The frame of your mirror can help tie your design aesthetic together. Additionally, the right frame can make your mirror appear larger than it actually is, giving you the size you want without spending the money.

8. Update Accent Hardware
It’s surprising how updating accent hardware can help modernize your current pieces. Handles, knobs, and locks can become dull or scratched over time, dating your furnishings. Adding new hardware can make sure your staple pieces look new and also give you an opportunity to better tie in your new design. Try brushed gold handles for a modern look or Art Deco-inspired knobs for a more geometric, vintage-inspired style.
9. Replace Faucets
Over time, bathroom faucets can become stained and rusted. Just like your accent hardware, these flaws, while seemingly small, can date your bathroom elements. Replacing your faucets is an inexpensive way to reimagine your accent pieces and create a clean foundation for your renovation. This includes replacing your shower head, shower faucet, and sink faucet to match each other and your new design look.
10. Opt for Open Shelving
Shelving is another fundamental bathroom component that can get expensive if not planned properly. One way to prevent going over budget is to opt for open shelving designs. Open storage pieces tend to cost less as they require fewer materials to build.
Not only are they more affordable, but they also keep your bathroom design unobstructed, maximizing the space you have. Shelving is a great place to store bathroom essentials like towels and toiletries for you and guests to access easily.

11. Install Wainscoting
Wainscoting is wooden paneling on the lower part of the walls of a room. This is used for two reasons: first, to protect your walls from mildew, and secondly, for design purposes. Wainscoting is an affordable wall accent that can cover up previous damages such as knicks and holes, but also looks great. Wainscoting is usually constructed of oak and extends as high as 48 inches. It’s a great option to tie in your design style as well as protect and cover your bathroom walls.
12. Paint Your Wooden Floor
Wooden bathroom floors are a rather outdated choice, as they aren’t great for moist areas like bathrooms, but if you already have them installed there are ways to update them. If your wooden floors are on the older side, consider refurbishing them instead of replacing them.
This can help you save money in the interim, although you may need to replace them with material better suited to moisture, like tile, eventually. While they may appear scuffed from years of use, a coat of protective enamel paint can help brighten up your wooden floors.
13. Add Stylish Accents
A bathroom remodel isn’t complete without the simple, yet necessary accents that make it feel like home. Accents can include vanity pieces like a matching soap dispenser and toothbrush holder or wall decor like paintings and a backsplash.
Your finishing touches don’t need to be overly intricate to look unique. It’s amazing how these little personal pieces can tie in your style and make your bathroom feel more like you. Be sure to add multiple small accents to make your new bathroom feel welcoming for both you and your guests.
Tips to Save Money on Your Bathroom Remodel
Along with the above 13 bathroom remodel ideas, you can take a few other steps to make your design as simple and affordable as possible. From working with professional design consultants to getting creative by reusing existing furniture pieces, here are three tips for saving money on your bathroom remodel or renovation.
1. Use an Affordable Design Service
Working with an interior design service like Modsy can help take your ideas and turn them into reality using life-like 3D designs. With professional renovation design help, you’ll partner with an expert who can guide you every step of the way and provide all the recommendations you’ll need to start your project.
This is especially helpful when considering a renovation that is budget-friendly. Once you land on the design you love, you can purchase your fixtures and ensure you adhere to your budget. And if you choose to utilize a builder, you can be sure they have what they need before they begin construction.
2. Do the Remodel Yourself
Another great tip for saving money is to DIY the renovation. Of course, this will require at least some previous expertise in remodeling projects. Renovating your bathroom yourself can save you a significant amount of money on contractor costs, but there are some risks involved.
Before trying to do the work yourself, be sure to make a plan ahead of time—preferably by consulting with an expert. Having a detailed plan can ensure things go accordingly and you’re prepared for mishaps along the way. (Again, Modsy can help plan your bathroom remodel!)
3. Reuse Existing Pieces
Lastly, when looking to save money on a remodeling project try to reuse existing pieces when possible. You can do this by either using existing bathroom pieces in a new way or upcycling them by painting or refinishing them.
Reusing existing pieces can save you money by avoiding new purchases and helps create the look you want with a little bit of DIY work. You can also use other household items to upcycle like an old dresser or side tables. This is also a more sustainable approach to remodeling!

Laundry Room Decor Ideas that Will Make You Actually Enjoy Doing Your Laundry
Laundry rooms can be dismal places, especially when they’re tucked into a dark, dreary basement. When not thoughtfully designed, these spaces can make you dread doing laundry. But, as a necessary life task, it’s worth the time and money to make your laundry room into a place that you actually enjoy.
But that’s where many people get stuck. What, exactly, goes into a good laundry room design other than a washing machine and dryer? Well, prioritizing functionality is key. You’ll want storage and surfaces that make laundry less of a chore. But you can’t spell functionality without FUN! As a small space in your home, this is a great place to make some daring and bold design decisions that takes this space from boring to oh-so-fun.
Want a breakdown of all the fun and functional design decisions you can make? Read on for laundry room decor ideas, with tips for making this a beautiful and practical space in your home! Whether your laundry room is in your basement, tucked away in a closet, in your mudroom, or in another nook of your house, these laundry room decor ideas will help you make the most of your space, no matter how large or small!
Laundry Room Appliances
Ok, first things first. You can’t have a laundry room without a washer and dryer! Make sure you have a washer and dryer that works for your family’s needs. This is where you’ll have to make some decisions. Do you want side-by-side models or space-saving stacked appliances? High-efficiency (HE) or traditional? Front-load or top-load washer (with or without an agitator)? The options are endless—and what you choose depends entirely upon your needs and wants!
But beyond those decisions, you can also choose appliances that make a stylish statement in your space. Many new washer/dryer sets are quite stylish and come in fun colors beyond the typical white or stainless steel, and they’re design with sleek profiles. This lets you make more of a stylistic choice for appliances that jive with your laundry room decor, if you so desire.
Optional Add-Ons: Utility Sinks and Dog-Washing Stations
Want to take your laundry room to the next level? Add a utility sink. These deep sinks are a great place for pre-treating stains, hand-washing delicates, and even filling up a mop bucket or rinsing off muddy boots.
Do you have a dog? As long as you’re working with plumbing, you could also consider installing a dog-washing station. They’re kind of like mini showers without doors where you can more easily give your dog a quick bath! Just make sure the nearby walls and floors are tiled if you go for this add-on, since we all know that bathing dogs (and the subsequent shaking off that happens) leads to water flying everywhere! Tile is fine if it gets wet and is easy to clean up.
Laundry Room Floors
It’s important to carefully consider your flooring choice for your laundry room. You’ll want to go with a practical material that’s waterproof (in case of any water leaks), easy to clean, and tolerant of high moisture and heat levels from your water and dryer. Our top recommendations are tile or vinyl flooring, as they’re both waterproof (if properly installed) and easy to clean. Concrete or waterproof laminate flooring are good secondary options.
Make a Style Statement
However, when choosing your laundry room flooring, you can go beyond the practical! Flooring, specifically if you opt for tile, is a great way to make a major style statement. Since laundry rooms tend to be smaller spaces, you have an opportunity to take bigger decor risks and add bold, stylish flooring. We love the look of intricate tile layouts, tiles with patterns, or a design of high-contrast black and white tiles. This is a simple, easy way to up your laundry room decor game!

Laundry Room Walls and Storage
Image credit: Mariana Rascão on Unsplash
Another great way to blend style and practicality in your laundry room decor is with your laundry room walls and storage.
First, it’s important to get practical and consider your storage needs. Hampers and baskets for clothes (dirty and clean) are an absolute must. You’ll also want a clothing rod place to hang clothes to dry, steam, or iron. It can also be nice to have a foldable clothes-drying rack. You’ll also want to have some storage spaces for your laundry soap and supplies, as well as irons, steamers, and other cleaning supplies. (A laundry room is a great place to store all of your household cleaning supplies!) For this storage, you can either have open, floating shelves or install a couple cabinets if you prefer closed storage.
Then, have some fun with your walls. Like any room, you can keep your walls simple with a neutral paint color that keeps your space light and bright. But, like your flooring, you can also use this surface to make a big statement. Adding patterned wallpaper or millwork can give your laundry room the extra pop of personality it needs to make it a stylish space where you enjoy spending time.
Designer Tip: When it comes to your flooring and wall treatments, choose one or the other to make a big design statement. If you go for patterned wallpaper and bold tilework, you may end up with a small space that feels visually overwhelming.

To take your laundry room design to the next level, add thoughtful decorative accents throughout the space like you would in any other room of the house. On a practical level, if you have open shelving, the storage baskets or canisters you use can help make a stylish statement. You could also layer plants and simple decorative accessories on open shelves.
When it comes to laundry room decor, don’t neglect artwork! While laundry rooms may not be a space for showing off your favorite work of art, it’s nice to hang some playful or cheerful pieces of wall art to add some additional color and personality to your laundry room decor. This is also a great space for some themed signage! Laundry room artwork can hang on the wall or you could layer pieces into a small gallery on a floating shelf.
The lighting in this space is another way to add to the laundry room decor and design. Good overhead lighting will make the task of doing laundry easier, and you could also add sconces for directional lighting. With both of these lights, you can choose stylish fixtures that help add to the overall aesthetic of your laundry room decor.
One last piece of laundry room decor that’s often neglected is a padded (patterned!) rug in front of your washer and dryer for comfort and practicality. A padded rug will be easier on your feet and back when doing those endless loads of laundry. And if you have tiled floors, a rug will keep your feet warmer, especially in the winter! Pick a rug in a style and colorway that goes with the rest of your laundry room decor in either a 3×5 or a runner, depending on how much space you need to cover, then layer a thick rug pad underneath!

DIY Outdoor Kitchen Ideas for Al Fresco Aficionados
When the weather is warm, there’s nothing quite so pleasant as eating dinners on the patio. But it can be a hassle to transfer food, plates, and utensils from your kitchen out to your outdoor dining space.
That’s why the real al fresco aficionados have an outdoor kitchen setup! For those who have a large outdoor space, they may have a full outdoor kitchen, while others will simply have a small serving area where they can stash their outdoor eating utensils. Either way, having an outdoor kitchen area to complement your dining space will really level-up your life.
And here’s the great news: it’s possible to design an outdoor kitchen on a budget—and even to install an outdoor kitchen on your own. Today, we’re sharing some tips on designing a low-budget DIY outdoor kitchen, plus sharing some DIY outdoor kitchen ideas for every skill level.
Essential Elements for Designing a Low-Budget DIY Outdoor Kitchen
Designing and installing a DIY outdoor kitchen on a budget? Here are some essential elements for any outdoor kitchen, with ideas on how to make it work on a budget.
Counters
For any countertops you’re installing in your DIY outdoor kitchen, opt for materials that are weatherproof, durable, and easy to clean for when you’re tackling food prep. Natural stone and concrete countertops are common choices for outdoor kitchens, and you could save even more money by opting for salvaged stone. To save on your budget even more, stick with a smaller countertop space.
Appliances
Exactly what appliances you’ll need will depend on what kind of outdoor kitchen you’re designing and how big it is. But here are the key elements we’d suggest:
A grill, griddle, smoker, or pizza oven for cooking meals outdoors
A beverage cooler or mini-fridge for keeping cold drinks close at hand
A sink for washing hands during food prep and washing up dishes after meals
Designer Note: Installing a sink will certainly add to your budget, so this is an easy one to skip if you’re going super low-budget on your DIY outdoor kitchen!
Storage
Storage for outdoor cooking and dining supplies is an absolute must. Ideally, you’ll have some cabinets and drawers for housing cooking equipment and dinnerware, serveware, and glassware, so they’re tucked away from the elements. (Uness your outdoor kitchen is partially enclosed—then you could get away with some open shelving!) It’s also nice to have hooks for utensils near your cooking station to keep things close-at-hand.
Custom built-in cabinets will be a higher-lift DIY and have a higher price point, while freestanding storage is a better option for low-budget DIY outdoor kitchens.

DIY Outdoor Kitchen Ideas
Whether you’re a skilled DIY-er or a novice, there are DIY outdoor kitchen ideas for all skill levels! Here are our top three suggestions for a DIY outdoor kitchen, depending on what skills you have and how much space you have to work with.
Patio Kitchen
If you’re someone who loves to cook and eat outside on a daily basis, if you love to entertain, and if you live in a moderate climate, you may want to consider a full patio kitchen! This can include not just a grill, but a grill that’s “built-in” to surrounding cabinets and countertops, along with a sink, fridge, and plenty of storage space. You could even incorporate some bar seating.
Of course, for a full outdoor kitchen you’ll need utility hookups, as well as proper coverage so that the kitchen isn’t fully exposed to the elements. And if a lot of building is involved, be aware that you may need to pull permits! This is definitely the biggest, most involved DIY lift, so, only attempt if you have pro-level skills! Otherise, leave it to the professionals.
Regardless of if you want to DIY or hire it out, you can have a renovation design expert create 3D designs of a patio kitchen so that you or your contractor have everything you need to execute the design and get started!
DIY Difficulty Level: Pro
Tips for Designing a Patio Kitchen
Include elements you’ll use the most, like a grill, a beverage fridge, and a sink. Just remember that outdoor kitchens are meant to be convenient, but they are smaller than a normal kitchen. So, you won’t have everything your normal kitchen has!
Incorporate closed storage for outdoor dinnerware, serveware, and flatware so that you don’t have to bring your normal indoor stuff outside.
Go easy on decor. With exposure to the elements, delicate decor and materials can get ruined! So, don’t decorate with anything too precious.
Outdoor Pizza Kitchen
Want something a bit simpler? Try a DIY outdoor pizza kitchen. All you need is a freestanding pizza oven and ideally some prep space and a drink fridge. (However, if you want to keep it really simple, you can prep pizzas inside, bring them out to cook, and serve drinks out of a cooler!)
This is obviously a great choice for those who love pizza—but it’s also great for entertaining. What friends don’t want to come over for woodfired pizzas and drinks?? And if you live in a climate where year-round outdoor dining isn’t possible, this is a great option that’s more than just a grill but can still easily be packed away for winter. And, of course, it’s not as expensive or involved as a full DIY outdoor kitchen.
DIY Difficulty Level: Intermediate
Tips for Designing an Outdoor Pizza Kitchen
Make sure you have the necessary surface space around the pizza oven for your cooking utensils and pizza stones. You may also want to consider adding a stone countertop as a place to prep your pizzas and set down and serve hot pizzas!
Install your pizza oven in a place with good circulation and low fire risk. Because of the heat and smoke pizza ovens generate, you don’t want the oven too close to where people sit or stand, or to be too near anything flammable.
Outdoor Serving Cart
Looking for a low-budget DIY outdoor kitchen that’s also easy to execute? Keep it simple with an outdoor serving cart. This is an inexpensive and easy outdoor kitchen set-up that can be the perfect complement to a grill or smoker. It can serve as a prep space to accompany a grill, then transform into a serving station as the food is being cooked.
And, if you opt for a serving cart on wheels (vs a stationary outdoor kitchen island) you can easily move it around or even move it to the garage when not in use to protect it from the elements. This is a great DIY outdoor kitchen option for rentals! And, because it doesn’t actually involve any building, it’s a DIY anyone can tackle! All you need is to stock your serving cart with your outdoor serving dishes and utensils, then load it up with food when you’re ready to entertain!
DIY Difficulty Level: Beginner
Tips for Designing an Outdoor Pizza Kitchen
Use a bar cart, outdoor rolling utility cart, or DIY a kitchen cart for your storage and serving needs
Include practical items, like shatter-proof glasses, durable melamine plates, napkins, and enamelware trays. By having an outdoor-specific kitchen and dining goods,  you don’t have to bring all of your indoor gear outside every time you want to eat outside. Plus, opting for more durable materials is simply better for outdoor dining!
Stock the cart with sturdy and durable storage pieces to house these kitchen items. Adding baskets and bins is a great way to maximize storage space on a lower shelf!

Guest Post: Allsteel, Well-Being Considerations for Working from Home
At Modsy, we believe that better-designed environments lead to happier lives, and we’re always on the lookout to partner with brands that share our vision. Office furniture design company Allsteel are experts at creating well-being in the workspace. We’re incredibly excited to speak with them for our upcoming Instagram live on how to create well-being in your WFH set-up. As part of our excitement, we’re featuring not one but two (!) guest posts written by their experts here on our blog.
Read on to learn more about well-being considerations for working from home. Click here to read all about well-being in the evolving workplace. And don’t forget to join Allsteel and us on our Instagram Monday, May 23rd, from 3-5 PM PST for an illuminating discussion on how to get the most from your WFH set-up.
Staying healthy is on everyone’s mind today. Our focus at the moment has (rightfully) been on disease prevention, however, it is important that we do not lose sight of promoting holistic well-being. We cannot overlook our physical health and mental well-being, especially in a climate where anxieties and stress levels may be higher than normal.
Many workers have suddenly found themselves being asked to work from home. Here are some tips for you to take care of yourself during your time working from home, ensuring that you are able to continue to be happy, healthy, and productive.
1. Office Set Up
Workstation
Ideally, all workstations would include a fully adjustable table, chair, and work tools. Adjust these tools to support healthy work postures. Check out our video on proper ergonomic adjustments. Check out our video on proper ergonomic adjustments.
If you are working from home temporarily, availability of adjustable furniture may be limited. It is still possible to work in ergonomic postures using your own furniture. For example, if you must work at a dining room table and chair, consider adding extra cushions to the seat to elevate you to an appropriate height for healthy arm and wrist postures. It will also be necessary to support your feet, so they are not dangling. Try using those extra Amazon Prime boxes you have laying around as a footrest! Check out healthy sitting/standing postures.
Alternate your working postures throughout the day. If you do not have an adjustable worksurface in your office, try standing at your kitchen counter periodically.
Proper positioning of your keyboard and monitor is important to protect your wrists, shoulders, neck and back from pain and fatigue. Whenever possible, separate the monitor and keyboard to position each properly. That is, if using a laptop, also use an external keyboard and/or monitor and position both to allow for ergonomic and comfort.
Listen to your body – if you are starting to feel fatigue or discomfort, reassess and reorganize your workspace.
Sit Near a Window
If possible, set up your office near a window to gain view of natural light and the outdoors. Avoid working in basements or windowless rooms for extend periods. Views of the outdoors and nature can improve mood and mental well-being. Natural light can even aid with circadian rhythm and improve sleep quality.
Beware of glare. If necessary, adjust the position of your monitor and/or use blinds to control glare, which may contribute to eye strain.
Temperature
You finally have the personal control you always wanted! Take advantage!
Sound Distraction
Think noise was a problem in the office? Now that you’re at home you may be juggling kids, pets, partners, etc. If possible, find a way to reduce noise during work periods that require concentration or creativity.
Organization
Set up your work area to meet the needs of your day and the tools you need to complete your job effectively. Do you need reference materials? Video conferences? This may impact the size and location of your desk.
Keep tools that are often used (e.g. notebooks, pens) close by. Other things that are rarely used (e.g. staplers, hole punches) can be located elsewhere to reduce clutter.
2. Physical Health
Move Your Body
About every hour, change your posture and get a little physical activity.
Try walking up and down the stairs, doing some high knees, or walking around the outside of the house (if you can do so safely).
Pacing during phone calls can also provide full-body, dynamic movement without disengaging with your work.
Exercise regularly, including cardiovascular activities, strength training, and flexibility training.
Drink Water
Staying hydrated helps the body to maintain health. It is generally recommended that we drink between 50 and 100 oz a day.
Mindful Eating
Remove yourself from your work area and try to eat with a friend or family member, if you can do so safely. When we engage with our food and avoid eating alone, we tend to eat healthier and enjoy the eating experience more. The connection with another individual can also support mental well-being. If you are isolated while working from home, try video conferencing with a friend.
Choose healthy foods (fruits, veggies, limit sugar and processed foods).
Make sure that you are taking a meaningful break from work (30 minutes). When you return to work, you will be ready to be fully engaged in your work again.
Sleep
We should be getting 7 or more hours of sleep. Too little sleep can lead to adverse health effects.
3. Mental Well-Being
Stay Connected with Family & Friends
Right now, the safest way to do this may be through a phone call or video chat.
Manage Stress
Maintain realistic expectations given your constraints and work environment.
Communicate with work team and manager to discuss goals and challenges.
Assess your ability to complete tasks. Do you have everything you need to complete your work appropriately?
Ensure that your internet and phone are in working order and reliable, if possible.
In addition to a significant lunch break, make sure that you are taking small breaks throughout the day. These breaks will not only help your mental state but may also allow you to stay productive throughout the day.
Home workers often log more hours than those working in the office. It may be easy to work non-stop from waking up to late at night but remember to stay connected with non-work activities and rest as well.
Continue to consult medical and psychological professionals.
Discuss strategies to manage stress or anxiety, deal with uncertainties
Manage changes to life/relationship changes
Continue medication
4. Other Considerations
Help Your Community (if possible)
Donate to food banks, reach out to elderly neighbors, call a friend’s child to have them read a book to you.
Cleaning & Disinfect Regularly
Emergency Preparedness
Have an escape plan, a fire extinguisher, and medical contacts in an easy to locate place.

Guest Post: Allsteel, Well-being in the Evolving Workplace
At Modsy, we believe that better-designed environments lead to happier lives, and we’re always on the lookout to partner with brands that share our vision. Office furniture design company Allsteel are experts at creating well-being in the workspace. We’re incredibly excited to speak with them for our upcoming Instagram live on how to create well-being in your WFH set-up. As part of our excitement, we’re featuring not one but two (!) guest posts written by their experts here on our blog.

And don’t forget to join Allsteel and us on our Instagram Monday, May 23rd, from 3-5 PM PST for an illuminating discussion on how to get the most from your WFH set-up.
For many, the COVID-19 pandemic initiated a simultaneous need to work in disparate locations, manage increased stress levels, navigate changing family dynamics, and reckon with societal disparities. Despite the hardship and physical separation, and perhaps because of it, many have been united in our understanding of the importance of employee health, humanity, life satisfaction, and in making positive contributions. We recognize more acutely than ever that well-being is not only a consideration of physical health, but also accounts for and fosters mental wellness, and is inclusive of lifestyles and locations.
This refocus on humans, health, and humanity has prompted shifts in workplace strategy. As we look ahead to the future of the workplace, user experience and comfort is now being prioritized, where it may have once been considered only a side-effect of decisions made to boost efficiency or space utilization.
The benefits of well-being considerations can be significant to employees as well as employers. When integrated holistically and thoughtfully, well-being can be a key driver to reduce turn-over, ease burnout, and increase engagement. Additionally, robust well-being strategies can inform real estate decisions, inform hybrid work policies, and provide insight when we consider equitable workplaces and meeting options.
Contributors to Well-Being
Historically, wellness programs were considered and fulfilled exclusively by the individual employee. Programs for smoking cessation and sugar-intake reduction, for example, may have been presented as opportunities for individuals to improve their health through their own actions, but would not usually include changes to the built environment or work policy.
What we have learned is that well-being initiatives are more successful and meaningful when the built environment and the work culture support and foster the health and comfort of all employees.
Built Environment as a Contributor to Well-Being
We spend more than 90% of our time indoors and these environments can impact our physical health and mental well-being.
Examples of well-being considerations related to the built environment include opportunities for movement throughout the space and at workstations, access to natural light (and the ability to control it through shading), air quality controls, biophilic elements, and the inclusion of sufficient eating spaces to prepare, clean, and practice mindful eating.
Culture as a Contributor to Well-Being
Without expressed and perceived support, employees may feel conflicted about participation in well-being initiatives. For instance, if an employee who chooses to take a walk over the lunch hour is perceived as ‘not busy enough,’ it is highly unlikely that any employee will participate in this healthy activity.
Examples of well-being considerations related to the work culture include permission (documented policy and unwritten rules/ norms) to take breaks, promoting volunteering opportunities, offering and actively supporting participation in employee resource groups, and two-way communication.
Tumblr media
Where we are beginning the conversation
There is not a single correct way to incorporate well-being into spaces, culture, and policy. As the work environment changes, we are committed to continually learning, researching, and practicing well-being. To start this conversation, we are introducing the concepts of human centered design, ergonomics, and acoustics, though this is far from an exhaustive list of important considerations.

Human Centered Design
Human-centered design is designing with the intent to solve problems, meet needs, and align with preferences—and doing so in a way that is meaningful, intuitive, and comfortable for the people who use the products and spaces.
We are also expanding our purview to consider the broad variety of employees and what we can do to foster and support them. We need to be very cognizant of these considerations while designing spaces. This will take planning in advance, sensitivity, understanding, and vulnerability to improve and reassess workspaces and policies.
Research, development, and application of holistic considerations begin with product development, and extends to space-planning, considerations of workplace culture, and beyond. Our goal is to create comfortable, healthy, and productive work environments.
Ergonomics
Ergonomics is the study of the interaction between humans and their work environment, and ultimately using this information to reduce risk of injury, increase comfort, and foster productivity.
We understand that the products need to support the application at hand and be comfortable for the individuals using them. The design of products should also intuitively reduce anxiety about whether the seat is too low or too deep to use easily and effectively. We also understand that coordinating products is paramount—allowing appropriate and comfortable clearances between products and coordinating them with the type of work being done—whether that’s a casual conversation or a more traditional meeting.
Tumblr media
  Acoustical Performance
Poor acoustics are a source of frustration, distraction, and dissatisfaction in the work environment.  Additionally, research has linked the impact of sound to well-being—when not accounted for, noise can have a negative impact on stress, memory, and workplace satisfaction.
We are striving to understand acoustical considerations through the lens of well-being, provide clarity around acoustical testing metrics, and be thoughtful about acoustical design through the lens of application, space type, and the human experience.
Through thoughtful design and application of our research, we can help to create spaces that meet workspace acoustic needs while also improving workplace satisfaction, space utilization, and well-being.
In conclusion
Work environments that are inclusive, psychologically safe, and where employees feel healthy and engaged are generally places where people want to be. In these environments, we become better at problem solving, more innovative, and more creative.
With holistic consideration of well-being, we can create environments where people are contributing as their best selves.

How a Moroccan Rug Can Improve the Aesthetic of a Room
Although a room can look great with just new furniture, adding decor can really put the finishing touches on a room. In fact, vases and pictures look nice on tables and walls, but there is one area that should not be overlooked: the floor. Rugs are a classic yet elegant way to tie the room together.
Tumblr media
Moroccan Rugs: Are They Good Investments?
A great choice for floors given any situation is the elegant classiness of Moroccan rugs! Sure, the generic living room style looks wonderful in showrooms and decorating magazines. However, there is that glaring descriptor that no homeowner would want: “generic.” Homes need a rather unique quality to them that’s more than just a cookie-cutter design.
One-of-a-kind Moroccan rugs are a great way to break free from the mold of keeping up with whoever is ‘en vogue’ at the moment.
When choosing Moroccan rugs, you need to start by thinking about what sort of rug you want to see on the floor. For example, with different types of carpets available, you need to decide whether you will put a traditional Berber carpet in your living room or a kilim rug in your bedroom.
How a Moroccan Rug Can Elevate Your Interior Decor
Moroccan rugs can easily add versatility to a room’s design and layout while also complementing (or stealing the show from) the current color scheme. It’s an interesting accent piece that draws attention while not making the space look busy.
Contrasting layers is a great design trick to employ at this point. A highly textured rug under a plain background, or the other way around, will do wonders. It’s easy enough for you to choose a rug’s shape to match the furniture in a room. Rectangular, circular, and square rugs are the most common.
You shouldn’t just use rugs to keep your feet warm or display the beauty of your floor. Historically, people have used rugs to create barriers between spaces or as dividers during the day. They do this by tying the rug to some type of structure, whether it be wooden poles, ropes along the ceiling, or even a wall.
The way rugs can be rolled up and transported makes them useful for creating flexible spaces. Back in classical times, there were usually multi-functional rooms in large merchant houses that had varying purposes. A set of rugs, floor pillows, and furniture good for any function would be ready somewhere in the house. They would then get placed in the function room as needed.
Other uses for rugs include being rolled in a dark room for a nap or laid out on grass or similar surfaces for a nice picnic. They could also serve as decor during business meetings or give an office a more comfortable atmosphere.
Moroccan rugs are an integral part of life, so much so that they are held to a high standard and made to endure for a long time, with their beauty more often than not a key factor.
Conclusion
When it comes to improving aesthetics in a home, few things do it better than a Moroccan rug. It’s a great way to break free from generic designs and add a unique twist to any room. When choosing one, consider shape and purpose.

5 Affordable and Timeless Trends You’ll Love
Creating a beautiful and functional space is hard. Making one that will stand the test of time is even trickier, and trying to do it all on a budget can feel next to impossible. But everyone deserves a home they love at a price they can afford. That’s why we asked our designers to select some timeless design trends that you can do yourself without breaking the bank.
Read on to learn how to create a timeless, chic, and AFFORDABLE look in your home!
Invest in Plants
Photo Credit: Jess Isaac on All Sorts Of
We’re kicking things off with perhaps the most evergreen timeless trend: plants! Think about it, plant life is the ultimate in timeless interior design and will never go out of style. After all, plants (whether living or faux) are affordable, textural, and shapely, adding drama and bringing life to your space. They’re also versatile and can transition from one interior design style to the next, making them an asset if you decide to change your decor to a new style but don’t want to start decorating from scratch.
Timeless tips for plants
Adding potted plants to surfaces such as bookshelves, mantles, or end tables is a great way to add a cozy and colorful accent to your space. You can also add larger plants to the corners of your room to soften the space, filling in any unwanted negative space in the room. To ensure that your plants blend seamlessly into the rest of your design, use plant holders that echo the rest of your decor. For example, woven baskets will look good in a boho-style room and neutral-colored concrete planters will work great in a minimalist space.
Need some plant care tips? Read our comprehensive guide!
Update Your Hardware
Photo credit: Bailey Alexander on Unsplash
Updating the hardware on your cabinetry is one of the easiest ways to bring new life, and a significant style impact, to your space. You can watch your room transform from trendy to classic in the time it takes to swap out some handles and nobs in your kitchen, making this timeless trend extremely easy and affordable.
Timeless tips for hardware
To ensure your land on a classic look that will stand the test of time, we suggest avoiding hardware too specific to a particular style. Instead, opt for hardware made from traditional materials. Brass, bronze, copper, or even glass are all great options to choose from. And selecting hardware with clean lines and simple design will ensure a classic, timeless interior design vibe in your space.

Embrace Calming Spaces
Photo credit: Maksim Goncharenok on Pexels
One timeless trend we love is calming spaces. We love it so much that we’ve written about everything from the ancient design practice of Feng Sui to the calming effects of blue rooms. We know that having a relaxing and soothing space to retreat to is a necessity everyone deserves and so will never go out of style. Calming spaces tend to lean more minimal and curated, which can be more affordable because you’ll need to buy less to create a calming look.
Timeless tips for calming spaces
To create a calming and classic look in your space, stick to a neutral color palette and use patterns sparingly. We suggest a well-organized layout for a more minimal yet cozy look. Use storage to arrange your keepsakes and leave the space feeling more open and calming.
Play with Traditional Textures and Patterns
Traditional textures and patterns like Turkish rugs, linen pillows, or jute baskets have the appearance of curated heirlooms. Incorporating them into even the most modern space can add a timeless, eye-catching quality, making the room more inviting.
Timeless tips for textures and patterns
Adding timeless textures and patterns may be more accessible (and affordable) than you think and can be achieved in a few easy steps:
Decide which traditional patterns complement your style best, like pinstripes, plaid, or subtle floral in neutral colors.
Select pillows, throws, and room accessories made of traditional materials in the patterns you like.
Swap them with any trendier items you own.
Voila, you’ve just added a timeless and classic appeal to your space!
Invest in Vintage and Antique Home Goods
Photo credit: Charlotte May on Pexels
Like traditional materials, adding a few thoughtfully chosen vintage or antique items to your space can make it feel curated and classic. Plus, vintage furniture and decor can often be found cheaper in secondhand shops, thrift stores, antique malls, and flea markets, making it a more affordable option for furnishing your home. Finally, used items are an excellent choice for more sustainable interior design.
Timeless tips for vintage and antique Home Goods
We often work with customers who want to incorporate a vintage item into their design. We could go into detail about designing with antiques. But creating a totally timeless look using vintage and antique pieces in your home isn’t as hard as you may think. One option is to mix more ornate items, like a Victorian side chair, with more clean-lined modern foundational furniture. You can also try matching the materials of your antiques with any new decor to ensure a cohesive feeling between design styles.

Tips for Creating a Sleek, Chic Modern Patio Design
If your home interior has a modern design style, you’ll probably enjoy a modern patio design to match. But you might be curious about how to start creating your modern patio space. Well, we have some good news for you! With the right furniture shapes and materials, along with a couple of decorative elements and features, you’ll have a modern urban outdoor patio design in no time!
Below, we’ve outlined everything you need to create a stunning, sleek modern patio design. Plus, you’ll find plenty of modern patio design ideas along the way!
Modern Patio Furniture
Shop This Look
When it comes to patio furniture for a modern outdoor space, look for pieces with clean lines and sleek modular designs that prioritize functionality. So skip the ornate details and instead opt for clean, minimalist designs.
We’ll touch more on materials later, but here’s a high-level look: modern patio furniture like outdoor sofas, patio chairs, and dining tables tend to have either metal or wood bases (and if it’s wood, it’s probably teak or mahogany). Comfort will be added with boxy upholstered cushions. Accent furniture is often crafted from concrete or stone in modern patio designs.
In addition to furniture, you may also want to consider an indoor-outdoor rug to zone a seating or dining area and make the space a bit more welcoming. Simple natural-fiber rugs complement the clean lines of modern patio furniture and have an understated appeal. But, if you’d like something a bit bolder, you could also go with a graphic black and white print in a synthetic material!

Modern Patio Color Palettes
Shop This Look
Color palettes for modern patio designs tend to be either high-contrast or monochromatic. But either way, you’re going to see a lot of neutrals. Think: black, white, gray, beige, and navy, with occasional pops of earth tones.
A high-contrast neutral look is great for furniture, which you can see in the designs and products we’ve selected above. Pieces with dark bases and light upholstery create an eye-catching modern look. If this color palette feels too cold, you can warm things up with natural wood tones in your furniture bases or decorative accents.

Modern Patio Materials
When designing a modern patio, choosing furniture and decor in materials that will drive home that modern vibe is important. Look for sleek materials like concrete, stone, and metal. But don’t be afraid to warm things up a bit with wood or natural materials.
Metal and wood are great choices for the bases of your furniture—whether that’s an outdoor sofa, accent chairs, or a dining table. (If you choose metal, just make sure you have cushions for comfort!) Then, incorporate concrete, cement, and stone in your tabletops, outdoor planters, side tables, and tabletop accessories.
Lean into the metal and concrete if you want your modern patio design to have a more industrial look. And if you prefer an organic-modern style, lean into wood elements to warm up your space and try on some organic shapes to break up all the hard lines. You can also incorporate furniture made of natural materials if you want to lean a little into boho style for a modern boho patio.

Extra Features for Modern Patio Designs
Shop This Look
The right furniture will make your patio functional. But it’s the extra features and decor that will take it to the next level!
For a modern patio, consider adding either a water or fire feature. Look for rectangular stone fire pits with a gas range. Gas outdoor fire pits are more modern than a rustic, wood-burning fire pit and have a simple on-off feature too! Alternatively, you could opt for a water feature—whether that’s a zen and tranquil fountain or a sleek, relaxing hot tub.
Next, add some lighting for evening hangouts. Tabletop lanterns with candles are a great choice, and you can never go wrong with a string of cafe lights. But depending on your space, you could also add ground lighting, tiki lanterns, or spotlights for extra lighting or ambiance with a modern flair.
And, of course, an essential feature for any patio is greenery! Plants add life and natural color to your patio design, making your space feel more inviting. So incorporate a variety of well-maintained foliage—from small potted plants to potted trees. And make sure they’re potted in sleek, modern planters!

Modern Patio Layouts
Shop This Look
Opt for a more open layout for a modern patio design that invites people in. If your space is large enough to have multiple zones, keep each area open and flowing into the next. Consider a casual vibe with seating that faces each other (with a coffee table or fire pit in the middle). Or try a seating arrangement that creates a U-shape and is open to your backyard or a nice view. Whatever approach you choose, keep the design of your modern patio space minimalistic and uncluttered. A simple layout is best for a modern patio design!

How to Create a Delightfully Eclectic Boho Patio Design
It’s just as important to think about your design style when designing an outdoor patio, porch, or deck as it is when designing an indoor space. After all, as an extension of your home, you want it to reflect your personal style.
But outdoor spaces also allow you to be a bit more adventurous in your design choices than in other parts of your home, since these tend to be totally separate spaces. One particular design style that’s quite popular for outdoor spaces is boho design.
What is Boho design?
Boho design is an eclectic, global-inspired style that consists of colorful patterns and layered materials. You’ll find an artful, eclectic mix of textiles and furniture styles, with an emphasis on natural materials. Overall, this is a casual style that prioritizes comfort and personal expression. This casual approachability lends itself well to outdoor spaces—which is why we love this style for boho patio designs.
If you want to design a boho patio, read on! We’ve rounded up some of our designers’ favorite boho patio furniture and decor, along with tips on what to look for when designing a boho patio space.
The Essentials: Boho Patio Furniture
Shop This Look
When designing a boho patio, you’ll want to consider how you want to use the space. Are you looking for a conversation area? An outdoor dining space? Or perhaps a mix of the two? The purpose of the space will help guide your furniture choices.
In general, for a conversation area, you’ll want an outdoor sofa, chairs or benches, a coffee table for the center of your space, as well as some side tables for people to set their drinks. For a dining area, you’ll want a dining table large enough for the groups you’d like to host, along with comfortable chairs.
But what styles and materials are best for boho patio furniture? Since boho design leans into natural materials and textures, that’s a big focus on boho patio furniture. Rattan and natural wood are the most popular choices for materials, along with other woven natural materials. But we also love the addition of concrete pieces for a modern industrial spin on boho design.

jQuery(document).ready(function () { if (analytics) { analytics.trackLink(jQuery('.inline-cta-content a'),'inline_banner_CTA_clicked',{cta_name:'start_your_project_inline_cta'}); } }); .inline-cta-container { background-size: cover !important; padding: 50px 20px; min-height: 379px; margin-top: 24px; margin-bottom: 24px; } .inline-cta-content { padding: 60px; margin: 0 auto; text-align: center; } .inline-cta-content-container { height: 100%; width: 100%; max-width: 780px; background-color: #414349; margin: 0 auto; } @media only screen and (max-width: 425px) { .inline-cta-content { padding: 30px; } } .inline-cta-content h1 { color: white !important; padding: 0 20px; } .inline-cta-content h3 { font-weight: normal; color: white; font-size: 17px !important; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0 20px; line-height: 24px; font-family: "ProximaNova Web", Arial, sans-serif; } .inline-cta-content a { display: block; width: 234px; height: 58px; text-align: center; background-color: white; line-height: 58px; color: #222222; margin: 0 auto; border-radius: 4px; } .inline-cta-content a:hover { text-decoration: none; }
Rattan Furniture
Rattan is about as boho as you can get when it comes to furniture. This natural material is a great choice for boho patio furniture like seating (both sofas and chairs), as well as accent furniture like side tables. However, it’s worth considering how exposed to the elements your furniture will be, since this material can fade in the sunlight and isn’t highly moisture-resistant.
If you love the look of rattan, specifically wicker rattan, but want something more durable, opt for wicker furniture made out of a synthetic resin, which will be more weather-friendly.
Noir, Gigi Chair
Crate & Barrel, Abaco Resin Wicker Outdoor Sofa

Natural Wood Furniture
Wood is a great addition to boho patio furniture. It has a natural feel that beautifully compliments rattan and other natural materials. Opt for wood furniture that has a global-inspired or eclectic vibe.

The Nice-to-Haves: Boho Patio Textures and Textiles

Since a key tenet of boho design is layers of textures, patterns, and colors, then plenty of textiles is an absolute must. This will also make your boho patio design feel much more cozy, comfortable, and inviting.
Pillows and Throws
Throw pillows, oversized floor pillows, and blankets are excellent ways to add pops of color and textural layering to your boho patio. Look for textiles with global-inspired patterns and decorative accents like tassels and pom-poms, which have a very boho vibe.
Wayfair, Mcalmont Argyle Floor Pillow

Coronado Indigo Pillow
Outdoor Rugs
Want to make your boho patio a bit more comfortable and welcoming? Layer an indoor-outdoor rug under your outdoor seating or dining area. Natural-fiber rugs made of jute, seagrass, and sisal rugs are great options for a boho vibe. But you could also opt for something with more color and pattern, like a Moroccan-inspired design or something with fringed edges!
Tanjore, Jaylee II Rug
Kerala Design, Iris Rug
Ceana Designs, Aster Indoor/Outdoor Rug
Poufs
Poufs are a great small furniture piece that’s great for extra seating or use as a footrest! They’re easy to move around and also very kid and pet friendly. Opt for materials like jute, seagrass, cotton, or leather for a chis boho patio style. Simple styles with textural weaves are a great choice, but we also love global-inspired designs like shibori.

Once you have your furniture and textiles in place, you can add some finishing touches with extra decor! By adding plants and flowers, baskets, trays, and screens, you can add additional texture, color, and organization to your outdoor space!
Baskets and Trays
For any room, indoor or outdoor, baskets and trays are a great way to add stylish organization to your space. And for a boho patio in particular, this is a great way to drive home the boho style of your outdoor space. Incorporating baskets, bowls, and trays made of natural materials give you a place to corral blankets, magazines, drinks, and more!

Plants and Flowers
Is any patio complete without some greenery? For a boho patio, incorporate large, leafy tropical plants and flowers, as well as some tabletop accent plants. Succulents are a great choice for a boho patio. Worried about your plants getting too much sunlight—or not enough? You can always opt for faux plants for all the look without any maintenance!
Crate & Barrel, Faux Bird of Paradise Tree

Artistic Woven Textiles

Incorporating some woven textiles into your boho patio’s decor is a great way to add a bit more texture and boho style to your porch. We like to do this with macrame hangings and plant holders, outdoor curtains (which offer privacy and a romantic vibe), and even woven pendants if you have a set-up for an overhead light.
Tanjore, Aiden Tapestry
Cyan Design, Ambiante Pendant
Folding Screens
The use of folding screens on your boho patio or porch is a great way to add texture and an element of privacy to your space. Opt for screens made of carved wood, rattan, or caning to help drive home a boho vibe.
West Elm, Ida Screen
Precita Home, Hand-Carved Room Divider
Ludlow Living, Nosia Room Divider
Lighting
You can’t have a good patio space without some lighting to help set the mood after the sun goes down! A mix of lanterns, string lights, and candles is the perfect way to add some cozy boho ambiance to your outdoor space.

How much does a kitchen renovation cost?
Your budget and the final cost can vary greatly depending on the design decisions you make. But, in general, you’ll want to plan on a minimum of $20,000 for a full kitchen makeover. From there, the types of cabinets you choose (custom vs. ready-to-assemble), your countertop materials, and the appliances you choose will all greatly impact your overall budget.
Here’s a general breakdown:
A $20,000 budget will, on average, get you: new flooring, upper and base cabinets, a backsplash, countertops, 1-2 lights, a sink, sink faucet, and labor
A $30,000–$50,000 budget will, on average, get you new flooring, upper and base cabinets, a backsplash, countertops,, 2-5 lights, a sink, sink faucet, appliances, a pot filler, and labor
A $60,000–$100,000 budget will, on average, get you: new flooring, upper and base cabinets (including crown molding, glass cabinets, and under-cabinet lights), a backsplash, countertops, 5-10 lights, a sink, sink faucet, appliances, a pot filler, ceiling design, and labor
You’ll also want to consider your home’s value when landing on a budget. Experts recommend setting your budget for a kitchen renovation at about 6-10% of your home’s value for the best return on investment when the time comes to sell. (This essentially ensures that the money you put into your renovation will create a kitchen that matches the quality of the rest of your home.)
Below, we’re breaking down all the major design decisions that go into a kitchen remodel. Plus, we’re considering kitchen renovation costs, highlighting the best choices for budget-friendly, mid-level, and investment kitchen renovation ideas so you can design the kitchen of your dreams, no matter your budget!
Kitchen Cabinetry and Storage

One of the first and biggest design decisions you need to make when planning a kitchen renovation is what kind of kitchen cabinetry you’d like. Not only do you need to decide on ready-to-assemble vs custom cabinets, but you also need to consider what color or finish you’d like, if you want your upper cabinets to be open or closed, and if there are any special features you’d like your cabinets to have. Not only this, but you’ll need to create design plans to ensure everything fits in the footprint of your space.
This is also one of the design elements that can take the longest amount of time to realize. With industry-wide production and shipping delays, the lead-time for cabinets has increased exponentially in the past few years. So, it’s important to make this decision early in the renovation process to ensure you aren’t left waiting for weeks or months on your cabinets before completing your kitchen renovation.
Below, we’re outlining the best choices to make, depending on your budget.
Budget-Friendly
If you’re on a tighter budget, you’ll definitely want to go with ready-to-assemble cabinets in a budget-friendly material.
And, as far as materials, cabinets made of particleboard, engineered wood (like MDF), or other synthetic materials will be much less expensive than solid wood, glass-front, or lacquered cabinets.
Another way to stretch your budget? Skip the wall-to-wall cabinetry and instead incorporate some free-standing storage. Floating shelves, rolling island carts, and even baskets are all easy, budget-friendly options to give your kitchen the storage space you need without breaking the bank.
Mid-Tier
To take your kitchen design to the next level, consider a semi-custom route. This will typically give you higher-quality options than ready-to-assemble, and give you a bit more of a custom look but without the fully customized price tag.
At this price level, you can opt for a wider variety of materials or customize your cabinet design further with painted cabinets. You can also use some extra budget dollars to customize your cabinet hardware and upgrade from base model choices.
Investment
If you have a large, robust renovation budget, it’s worth working with professionals to customize every last detail of your cabinetry to create a kitchen to your exact specifications. Custom cabinets allow you to opt for any color and material you’d like—like solid wood, lacquer, or glass-front cabinets.
With a higher budget, it’s also worth adding in a built-in pantry to give yourself plenty of food storage space. This is a luxury that many kitchens don’t offer but it’s definitely a feature worth including.
Kitchen Counters

After landing on kitchen cabinetry finishes and colors, the next major decision to make is kitchen countertop materials. The material you choose greatly impacts the overall look of your space—and your budget.
Budget-Friendly
The best choice for countertops when you’re on a budget is laminate. They come in a variety of styles and colors, which can help you find a look that suits your preferences. Plus, this material is durable and laminate countertops are easy to install.
Mid-Tier
For a mid-level renovation budget, consider concrete or butcher block countertops. They’re a more stylistic option than laminate countertops, but they’re still durable and versatile. You could also add in some solid stone on a kitchen island countertop for visual contrast and a pop of something more luxurious.
Investment
If you’re open to investing a bit more and want a higher-end look, opt for solid stone like granite, marble, or quartz. (Quartz is a great way to get the high-end look of solid stone at a slightly cheaper price point.) While solid stone requires more maintenance and upkeep, these natural materials are durable and absolutely beautiful, elevating the look of any kitchen.
Kitchen Appliances

Kitchen appliances can eat up a major chunk of your kitchen renovation budget. But they’re items that get used on a daily basis, so it’s worth choosing options that truly meet your daily needs. Most people opt for matching ovens, stoves, refrigerators, microwaves, and dishwashers, in matching finishes. And when it comes to range hoods, some people go for a matching option, while others go for more of a statement finish or something that adds contrast. (For editorial purposes, we’re grouping sinks in with appliances as well!)
Budget-Friendly
If you’re looking to save some money on your kitchen renovation, opt for super simple base model appliances. Skip the bells and whistles and stick with just the necessary features. Choosing a black or white finish will also be at a lower price point than stainless steel since these finishes aren’t as on-trend at the moment.
Designer Note: White appliances can be super high-end or an affordable option—it all depends on which brand you choose. (AKA a white SMEG appliance will be in the investment budget tier, while a basic white model will be much more budget-friendly.)
For your sink, opt for a drop-in style that works well with laminate countertops and is also more affordable and easy to install. Stainless steel sinks are the most affordable options; and they’re durable, too, resisting stains and heat.
Mid-Tier
Stainless steel has been a very popular choice for appliance finishes for more than a decade. While it’s a bit more expensive, this material offers a higher-end look that gives your space a more modern vibe. However, stainless steel does tend to show fingerprints and smudges more than black or white appliances, so it requires more maintenance to keep clean.
For a slightly more custom and upscale look, opt for a farmhouse sink in enameled cast iron or stainless steel. Also known as an apron-front sink, this style features an exposed front and deeper basin, which may require countertop or cabinet modifications.
Investment
Colorful appliances are a great way to add a splash of personality to your kitchen—but these trendy appliances tend to be from luxury brands. Translation? A much higher price tag. But if you want something that looks and feels very custom, this is a great choice. Smart appliances are also a great option for those with higher budgets. Who doesn’t want the ability to preheat your oven from your phone on your way home from the grocery store??
An undermount sink not only maximizes your counter space but the minimal design gives your kitchen a sleek look. This style works particularly well with countertop materials like marble or granite because of how they need to be installed. However, you may prefer a farmhouse sink in statement-making brass, copper, or marble depending on your style.
Other Considerations
Beyond colors and finishes, the design and specifications of appliances have a large bearing on the price and your overall kitchen renovation costs. For cooktops, you can opt for gas, electric, or induction. For ovens, you can opt for a traditional bake/broil/roast style or a convection oven. When it comes to refrigerators, not only do you have to choose the configuration but you also have to consider the depth and if you want a single or dual-compressor unit. And then there’s the question of if you want your fridge covered with paneling to blend in with your cabinetry.
And these are only some of the choices you have to make that will impact both the functionality of your kitchen and your overall budget. If you’re overwhelmed by choices or are worried about finding the right fit for your kitchen, we recommend working with a designer to help plan your space and shop for the right appliances.
Kitchen Floors
The next design decision to consider in your kitchen renovation ideas? Flooring. This is a good choice to make after you’ve finalized your cabinet and countertop decisions since you’ll want to make sure your flooring choice coordinates with these other design elements. When choosing kitchen flooring, you’ll want to consider the style and visual impact but also the price point, the durability of the materials, and how easy they are to clean.
Budget-friendly
For budget-friendly flooring, opt for vinyl or laminate flooring. These material options are affordable and since they’re easy to install, it’s a great way for a high-impact but affordable facelift for your kitchen. There are a ton of style options available for vinyl and laminate flooring, so you can find a style, color, and pattern that suits the style of your kitchen. These are also great material choices for homes with kids and pets!
Mid-Tier
Many people love tile floors in their kitchens since it’s durable and so easy to clean. Plus, if you opt for a tile with more pattern, it’s better at hiding messes! However, installing tile flooring requires more time and effort.
Investment
Hardwood floors are visually warm, versatile in style, and are an incredibly long-lasting design choice—but the solid wood is definitely more of an investment. It also requires more maintenance and upkeep, since you want to avoid getting hardwood wet.
Kitchen Lighting

When planning the design elements of your kitchen, don’t skip lighting! When dealing with food prep, you want plenty of good, bright lighting. But it’s also nice to have lighting that allows you to highlight specific design elements and layer your lighting depending on the time of day. When it comes to different budget levels for kitchen lighting, it’s less about choosing one type of lighting over another and more about adding and layering additional lighting options on top of the basic overhead light the higher your budget.
Budget-friendly
Flush-mount lights are the best budget-friendly lighting choices for a kitchen. Flush-mount lights are your standard overhead kitchen lighting option and will have the best price point. But for just a little bit more you can pick a pendant light, which will give you the lighting you need—plus add major visual impact.
Pendant lights are great for larger kitchens, especially those that have a kitchen island. Hanging one or two pendants above your island gives you ample light over your food prep space, plus it helps drive home the overall style and vibe of your kitchen. For additional or alternate directional lighting, opt for easy-to-adjust track lighting.
Mid-Tier
If you have a bit more budget to work with, start with your overhead lighting, then add in additional recessed lighting. Simple and sleek, recessed lighting is universally appealing for all design styles and is the perfect additional light source for kitchens of all sizes. With some styles of recessed lighting, you can even shift the directionality of lighting.
Investment
Want to take your kitchen design ideas to the next level? Install under-cabinet lighting. This will give your kitchen a high-end feel—plus it offers better lighting for food prep stations. This is a great design choice for kitchens with low natural light, or for use as passive lighting in the evenings or overnight.
