I'm pretty sure this is a post with a demographic of literally only me, but I've been thinking a bit tonight about two of my favorite series and their respective philosophies on death. I think the silly way of saying it is that VnC says "everyone will die :(," and Tai Sui says "everyone will die :)."

Vnc's whole thing is the concept of Vanitas. Death is inescapable and pleasure is made meaningless in its face. Vnc is set up to end in tragedy, with Vanitas as a character designed for us to love then mourn. Death here is the villain, the horrific fate that nobody can escape.

I don't think Vnc wants us to think of death as evil exactly, but Noé after killing Vanitas does seem to be in the throes of grief. Dying here is the painful inevitability that must be coped with. No amount of romanticization or willingness to die can erase the inherent horror of the classic protestant "death comes for us all."

But if Vnc is all about showing how death can make pleasure meaningless, then Tai Sui is about showing the opposite. The lack of death also makes pleasure meaningless, says Tai Sui.

Tai Sui is a horror story about the concept of immortality. It's a deconstruction of its own source of eternal life. And one of its big themes is that becoming immortal robs one of genuine humanity. A person that does not need to eat or sleep and is not subject to the whims of their flesh is hardly a person at all. Living forever warps your sense of time and makes you cold and foolish by the measure of a mortal.

Zhi Xiu tells Xi Ping that if he had died of illness at age thirty, two-hundred years before the start of the story, he would have lived through just as much joy. Death may come for all regardless of pleasures, but there is no pleasure for the deathless.

So in Tai Sui, returning death to the world is a good thing. Death is inescapable again and comes for us all, and that is nothing but a blessing. The creep of death is a welcome thing, even as Xi Ping mourns the loss of his friends. He knows that it's better than the alternative.

VnC and Tai Sui are wildly different series, but it's kind of fascinating to me how their ideas of death can play off of each other like this. Death and its absence can both be terrifying.
