Epilogue
You're seated on Billy's lap on the armchair, softly swinging your legs. He's explaining about this new research he'll be participating in his internship. Billy is currently studying whales, and you've never seen him so excited about anything before. He even got you a necklace with a whale's tail pendant.
“And that means I get to bring you when we go whale watching.” He says, pecking your lips. “The Marine Biologist and the veterinarian. We're a perfect match.”
“No shit! Really?” You smile, wrapping your arms around his neck. “That will be amazing.” Kissing him again, you only pull away when the bell rings.
“I'm showering!” Max yells from her bedroom.
“Maxine, aren't you the official door opener?” Billy shouts back.
“Well, since I'm at the top this time, I'll get the door.” You say, pushing yourself up and winking at Billy. Before you even open the door, you know who's on the other side because of the many voices. So you yell at the same time you pull the door open, at the top of your lungs. “YOU'RE ONE DAY EARLY!” You burst out, making them scream like scared, little babies.
“Damn it!” Billy mutters from the inside, and you know you scared him too.
Looking at the kids, you smile. They'll spend two weeks here with Maxine, but you guess they decided to make a surprise and show up earlier. “Come on in.” Stepping aside, you watch as the small army moves inside. Mike is carrying a box, which gets your attention. “What's that about?”
“It's your first-anniversary gift.” Eleven answers as Mike puts it on the couch. “But you can't open until Wednesday.”
“But now I'm curious!” You complain, walking over to the box.
But Lucas and Dustin stand in your way. “Nah, nah. Wednesday only.”
Showing off your tongue, you go back to Billy, sitting on his lap again. “Let's wake up real early and take a peak.” You whisper in his ear.
“Definitely.” He answers, placing a soft kiss on your neck.
You've been married for almost a year now. You and Billy had a simple party, for family and friends only. It was beautiful, and it happened on the beach. And Billy has been a responsible man now, a loving, gentle husband. There were times when he told you that he was scared to be like his father, but you told him then, and you'll keep telling him for as long as he needs, that he isn't.
Some people say that you got married too early, still trying to find flaws in your life. But the truth is that every day with Billy is the best day ever. You do have some arguments, but you never go to sleep before settling things down. Love is the priority, and neither of you will let anything get in the way of that.
But what really matters to you, is how happy Billy is. He tells you that almost every day when you wake up, still in bed. He thanks you for the life you've given him, for your love and patience. He says that he doesn't think he deserves this. But he does.
When Maxine is done showering and comes to the living room, you smile to see how happy she is with the surprise. Life is good now, and it'll only get better.
°°°
Billy's heart is filled with good things. Only good things. He left the past where it belongs. All the anger, the bitterness, the agony... She chased it all away. (Y/N), the light of his life.
“So, Wednesday,” Maxine says, a finger pointing at (Y/N) and her brother. “You two will have an amazing romantic day at that super romantic hotel, and then come back here for your party.”
“And open this huge box!” (Y/N) says, jumping on his lap a little.
“And to open your gift.” Max rolls her eyes. “But until then-”
“Beach. Pretty please.” Dustin asks in a fake begging tone. “I've been daydreaming about his for weeks. Can we just go?”
“Go put on your swimsuits, kids.” (Y/N) is still speaking when they move. Billy caresses her side to get her attention and smiles at her when she looks down at him.
“Why don't we go change as well? There will be a nice sunset today.”
“Mmm.” She raises an eyebrow, a half smile on her lips. “The kids will crowd the house for a few days. And we'll have plenty of time to join them at the beach. Why don't we stay here and enjoy some alone time?”
At this awesome idea, Billy smirks. “It sounds way better than going to the beach with some kids.”
 “It sure does, love.”
“I love it when you call me that.” He whispers, his thumb caressing her lower lip. And he does. It melts his heart every damn time. Hearing her use that word referring to him in that soft, honey voice... Drives him crazy.
°°°
“That's precisely why I call you that, love.” Smiling, you stand up. “And you should enjoy some action while you still can. I'm late this month so any day now.” You say, stopping before the box. You were super embarrassed in the beginning when it came to these things, but Billy always made you feel comfortable. “What the hell can this be?”
“You're late.” He says, and you glance at him before looking down at the box again.
 “Yeah, that's what I said.”
“You're... Really late.” He repeats and, deciding to leave the box be, for now, you turn towards him.
“... Are you keeping track of my period, Billy Hargrove?” Crossing your arms, you raise an eyebrow.
“Yeah. I drive past the drugstore every day, I'm the one who buys you tampons most of the time, (Y/N) Hargrove.” That makes you blush, and you stick your tongue out at him before walking to the kitchen. “And...” He starts, following you and leaning against the sink as you take a bottle of water. “It's always a party when your period is over. For both of us.” With that stupid smirk on, Billy comes closer, pinning you against the sink.
“Would you keep it down? We have a bunch of kids to be aware of.” You whisper.
 “How late are you, babe?”
“I don't know. I don't really keep track of it. I only know it's coming because I have cramps.” Shrugging your shoulders, you look at the fridge, at the calendar. “Mmm... Been a while actually.”
“So.” He mutters, his big hand laying on your stomach. “There's a possibility it won't be coming any time soon.”
“What?” You nervously chuckle, pushing him away when you hear the kids coming. “I don't think so, Billy.”
“Well, we're not always being careful, are we?”
“And whose fault is that?” You ask, hands on your hips.
“Fifty percent mine.” He answers with a smile.
“Billy, forget it. I'm just...” Your voice fades as you take a closer look at the calendar. “...Around two weeks late.”
“Kids!” He yells, startling you. “You gotta walk. I'm taking car one to the drugstore and car two won't fit all of you.”
“What the hell, Billy,” Maxine complains, coming to the kitchen with her army behind her. “What do you need from there? We have the meds box, and it's full.”
“I'm not buying any meds.” He says, as you just watch the scene, arms crossed. “I just need a pregnancy test.” And with that, he's off, leaving you with all of those wide-eyed kids.
 “Oh. My. God.” Dustin mutters.
“Holy shit, I can't believe it!” Maxine shouts, and you slide a hand under your shirt, touching your belly.
It's still too early to be sure, but you were never been this late before... And you remember feeling sick a couple of days ago. So maybe, just maybe, there's a tiny, fresh life growing inside you.
“Maybe...” You whisper, a smile taking over your lips at the thought of having a baby with Billy. “Maybe.”

The Journey Ahead
You look like three kids, caught red-handed doing something wrong. But you're not kids, and this man isn't going to lecture you. He's just mad at Billy, for no reason. And probably mad at you too.
Billy is quick to pull you, hiding you behind his shoulder.
“Do I need to repeat myself?” Neil barks, stepping forward. “I told you I don't want your sluts under my roof!”
“She's not a slut.” Billy yells back, and you hold his arm.
“B, don't.” You whisper in his ear.
Neil suddenly laughs, a dirty, disturbing noise. “I know you, little girl.” He says, a finger pointing at you. “You came here disguised as a teacher to Maxine.” He giggles. “What were you teaching Billy, huh? How to properly screw a girl? Because I need no lessons about that.”
Billy doesn't say anything, he just moves.
The next thing you know is that he's onto Neil, throwing a punch on his jaw that makes him fall back. But the asshole stands back up, and that's when the fight begins.
Your eyes can barely follow the commotion. All you know is that Billy gets hit as much as he hits his father back. “Billy, please, stop!” Susan yells, and you give her a hard look.
You have nothing against her, but right now, seeing as she seems to worry more about Neil, the cheater, who beats up his son, snaps a button on you. So you walk over to her, slapping her hard in the face. Her head jerks to the side, hair flipping violently. “You're an imbecile for marrying this man!” You shout, tears staining your cheeks.
Turning your attention back to the two men, you know you have to intervene. But you'll probably just get hurt, and distract Billy, making him get hurt as well. You just want to leave this place, you just want to go home. Take Billy home, away from this constant nightmare he lives in. “Billy, please.” You beg, wiping some tears away. “Let's go.”
“You're damn right!” Neil grunts, giving Billy a hard push, and making him step away. “I want you out of this damn house.” He barks, making his way inside. Billy follows him, and so do you, trying to reach him. But he's too fast, but you understand what Neil means when you get to Billy's bedroom. That devil is pulling all of Billy's stuff off his wardrobe and drawers, making a huge mess. “I want you out! I'm done with you and your filthy cunts!” As Neil screams, you look at Billy.
He's frozen, eyes on the clothes scattered around. It doesn't even look like he's breathing. Then, you know exactly what to do. There's no doubt, no second thoughts. Billy is getting out of this house right now.
Without saying anything, you go for his bed, pulling the two pieces of baggage he has underneath, and putting them on the bed. He's already looking at you when you glance at him, utterly confused. “Pack your things.” You tell him, your voice barely being heard above all the insults Neil is vomiting.
But Billy understands, and, hesitantly at first, he joins you, taking all of his stuff and shoving them inside the baggage.
Then, whatever Neil says doesn't matter. He's still yelling, but it doesn't matter. Nothing else matters but the fact that you're both going home.
After he rushes to the bathroom to get his things, you're both off, quickly leaving the house under Neil's insults.
“Wait!” Someone calls, and you both look over your shoulders. Max comes walking fast with pieces of baggage of herself, her mother right behind her. “Please, I can't stay here anymore.”
Billy looks at you, and you simply nod. “C'mon.”
She doesn't take half a second to move. “Maxine, please.” Susan cries as you put everything in the trunk. “We can fix it. We can-”
“No, we can't. I don't wanna live in this hell anymore.” Max mutters as she gets into the back seat. Then, both you and Billy get inside the car, and he drives away.
°°°
You were still in Hawkins, but it felt like Billy was in California already. The moment you got home, as you helped him settle down, giving him some space among your things, you felt he was much lighter. You could see it in his eyes, on his posture, that a burden has been lifted.
And even more, as the days pass by.
The news got out fast, and people started talking. But you don't care.
The only important thing now is that Billy is happy. And so is Max, because she's been living with you, ever since that day. Susan comes to visit her, and you have nothing against it. Neil is the one you'd have kicked out if he ever dared to come here. But Susan is ok, you don't enjoy her presence very much, but you manage to be kind. She wants Maxine to go back home, but the girl refuses.
As Summer draws near, you start making more solid plans. The transferring papers are settled, and next semester will be at the University of California. Billy's final exams are coming, and you've been helping him get the best grades possible. But he's not as restless now about going to California, but he still can't stop talking about it. And you're excited too. It'll be something new, something adventurous. And you want to do this, maybe as bad as he wants it.
°°°
Billy has the map on the kitchen table, the road he'll use to get from Hawkins to California highlighted with a red marker. He could do it in one go, but he doesn't want to make her anxious. So he'll drive around eight hours every day and stop for the night.
“There are several hotels on the way there, so we won't have problems with finding places to crash.” He says as (Y/N) bends over the map, eyes following the red line.
“It's a long way.” She says, a finger above California. “I never did anything like that. It'll be fun.” She looks up at him and smiles, the smile that always melts his heart, every single time.
“It sure will.” Billy walks over to her, wrapping an arm around her waist and pulling her into his chest. “But if you think it's too much to spend all that time on the road you can go by plane and we'll meet there.” Billy wants to make sure she's comfortable, he knows how anxious she can get.
“No, baby. I wanna go with you. I'll be fine.” (Y/N) holds the collar of his shirt, those kind eyes locked on his. “I feel safe with you behind the wheel and we'll take turns so we won't get too tired.”
Knowing she trusts him with a car, despite his reputation of driving like crazy, makes him smile. When she's with him, Billy keeps it safe, always under the speed limit. “Alright. But if you feel anxious or restless tell me and we'll make a pause.”
“Alright.” She says, mirroring his tone before tiptoeing to kiss him.
“Hey, lovebirds. I need to talk to you.” Maxine says, making Billy a little annoyed. But despite the sassy nickname, her tone is weird, and that makes him look at her a little worried. It's funny how (Y/N) changed him even regarding his step-sister. Billy doesn't treat her like shit anymore and even calls her sister now because that's how he feels. (Y/N) made him see things better, and she healed him. And he loves her for that.
She makes him feel loved. And everything he wants is to feel her feel the same way.
 °°°
“What's going on?” Billy asks, folding the map as you sit down, across from Max. His tone is still a little harsh, but you know now that it's just because he's worried and wants to know what's wrong already.
“School is almost over. And you're both going to California.” She starts, and you nod. “So. I wanna go.”
“What?” Billy exclaims, sitting down next to you.
“Wait. Let's take it slow.” You speak, touching his shoulder. “If you wanna spend the Summer with us, that's fine.”
“No.” She shakes her head, looking down at her folded hands before raising her eyes at you. “I wanna go back. For good.”
“Why?” Billy cuts in again. “What happened to make you want to go?”
“I don't wanna stay here with those two, ok?” She raises her voice.
“The two of you will calm the hell down, alright?” You raise your voice as well, gesturing at them. “Billy, shut up for a moment. Maxine–” You stand up, walk around the table, and sit next to her. “–Going back to California isn't that simple. You'll have to leave your friends behind. And on top of that, we can't just take you, that would be kidnapping and I'm sure Neil would go to the police the moment we cross the town's limits.”
“I know.” She sighs. “I don't wanna leave the guys. I don't wanna leave Lucas, but I thought about it, all the pros and cons... Of course, I'll come to visit them and they'll visit me too.” Max sounds like she has everything figured out. But still, you can't just take her. That's not how the world works.
“That's great, but still we can't just–”
“You can if you have a document. One that makes you guys my... Legal Guardian.” She burst out, smiling. “Crazy shit, I know. But I did some research and it's possible.” She stands up, running somewhere, and you're left alone with a wide-eyed Billy.
“I never, ever, not in a million years–”
“Thought you'd be on the verge of being a dad without even having to wait nine months?” You tell him, running a hand through your hair. “That's huge.”
“Look, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to drag Maxine into this. The plans we made were about the two of us but I can't just tell her to–”
“That's not the problem.” You say taking his hand. “I love Maxine, she feels like family. I just can't do things the wrong way because–”
“Here. I wrote it all down.” She comes back, placing a notebook before you on the table. “Hopper can make the process move a lot faster, of course. Billy and I aren't blood-related, but he can count as a guardian, we just need Susan to agree with it. That's the hard part.” She speaks fast, showing and pointing out everything she wrote down. Laws and all the papers needed. “I know it's crazy. But I wanna go home too. And staying here with Mom and Neil it's just... I can't.”
Sighing, you nod. Looking at Billy, he looks sad and nods as well. “You deserve better than living with someone like Neil. And Susan, well...”
“Susan is an idiot. She takes all that shit I have no idea why.” Max says, putting her hair behind her ears. “Look, you don't even have to look after me that much. I'll go to school, do the homework, and get good grades. I just need a place, guys.”
“You really think that's the problem? Maxine, I love having you here. And we would look after you not because we feel like we have to, but because we're family. I'm just worried that you'll leave your mother. That's huge, you have to be sure about it.”
“I am. I haven't spoken to Susan yet, but I will. I'll promise to visit and all that. But staying here... I can't.” She walks over to her brother, taking a deep breath. “I always wanted to go back as bad as you, Billy. So please, don't leave me here. Not now that you're not acting like a jerk most of the time, not now that you have a nice girlfriend, and that I got to live in a real home. You can't do this to me.”
You can see that Billy breaks a little, not sure of what to do. You wait for some comment or something like that. But instead, he takes her hand, a little messily at first, shaking it. “If Susan doesn't make a drama about it, and if (Y/N) agrees with forcibly having a kid out of the blue... I'm fine with it.”
She immediately looks at you, and with a smile, you stand up, walk over to her, and pull the girl into a hug. “I'd love to have you with us.”
“Thanks.” She mumbles, pulling away to look up at you. “Now I just need help to talk to Susan.”
“Nope. That's something you have to do on your own.” Billy says, and you nod. “Say what you have to say, that she will be free to visit you, that you'll visit her. Things like that.”
 “What if she says no?”
“Just tell her she won't ever stop being your mom. That you'll just be living away and the papers are just a formality so nobody will get arrested.” You say, hands on her shoulders. “She's coming later tonight. Billy and I will grab some pizza so you'll have some time alone.”
“Ok. Thanks again.” She turns at Billy. “You too, shitface. (Y/N) made a boyfriend out of you. And a brother.”
“I'm not even gonna answer you.” He rolls his eyes and you can't help but smile.
Later that night, it goes as planned. You took twice the normal time to get the pizzas, just to make sure you won't interrupt anything. And when you get there, you find a crying Susan, being held by Maxine. Excusing yourselves, you both go to the kitchen and wait. It takes half an hour for them to join you.
Then, Susan let you know that she's not happy about it. That she doesn't want to be away from her daughter. But, if Maxine's happiness means signing papers and letting her go, as long as she's being looked after and as long as she's free to visit, it's alright. And, Maxine has to spend at least some Holidays with her, and the girl agrees.
It's a tense dinner, but after Susan leaves, Maxine can't stop smiling.
After that, time starts passing by slowly. But eventually, the days start getting warmer, and the marks on the calendar take over. Until the day finally comes.
The kids, as well as your friends, spent the whole weekend at your place, on a never-ending sleepover. Max made plans with the party, and, as tough as it may be, you'll make it happen. Distance won't ruin their friendship, you'll make sure of that.
And, on Monday morning, there's a small crowd at the town's limit, right under the sign of “Leaving Hawkins.” There are lots of hugs and tears, but also a different feeling. You're about to make something huge, something you never thought you'd ever do. And it feels amazing. A bit scary, but amazing.
After the goodbyes, the three of you hit the road, with Billy behind the wheel. The shine in his eyes is indescribable. He's free, he finally did it. He left Neil behind, and this small town he hates so much. He's going home.
And so are you. Because you know that your home is wherever he is.

Against All Odds
You're happily chatting with your parents when the doorbell rings. You already introduced them to Tanya and Liam, but the big deal comes now. They both know you're with someone and have been asking about him ever since they got here yesterday night. But you told them to wait, to meet him in person. And now, it's time.
“Is it the lucky guy?” Your mother asks, giving you a funny look.
“Yup.” Holding back a smile, you rush to open the door.
And the moment you pull it open, Billy grabs your arm and pulls you out, closing the door behind your back and crashing his lips to yours. You laugh through the kiss, wrapping your arms around his neck and parting your lips to let him deepen the kiss.
“Happy Birthday.” He whispers when you pull back, a hand caressing your chin.
“That was an amazing surprise.” You say, a bright smile on your lips.
“Didn't want  your parents to see me attacking you like that, so...”
“Good call.” You ask, raising an eyebrow at him.
“Thanks, Princess,” Billy says as he takes something from his pocket. “I thought long and hard about it and-”
“You have a new ring.” You notice, just before he shows you a small, square box. Furrowing your eyebrows, you get a little suspicious, but you push that thought away. It couldn't be a- “Holy shit!” You exclaim the moment he opens the box.
“My new ring matches yours. Since we're getting married eventually, I thought you'd need this.” Your eyes raise from the ring to his face, tears starting to pool in your eyes. “Don't cry, Princess.” Billy takes your hand, sliding the ring on your finger. “Here. To make it official.”
“Alright.” You whisper, pecking his lips. “Now let's get inside before they come looking for us or I burst into tears.” Taking his hand you guide him inside.
When you get to the living room, both your parents immediately look at him. “So this is Billy.” Your father says, getting up and walking over, shaking Billy's hand. “You and I gotta talk, boy.”
“Give him a break, Philip, he just got there. Don't scare him away.” Your mother stands up as well, smiling at him. “Nice to meet you, Billy.”
“Mom, Dad... Billy and I need to tell you something.” Like ripping off a bandaid, you think. It's better to just tell them already. Tanya and Liam already know, and they gave you a hard time about it. But that was because they don't wanna lose you, and you don't wanna leave them. But this is life, and living far away doesn't mean you won't see them again. You'll visit, and they'll visit you too. “Guys, can you set the table for lunch?” You ask, and they nod, heading to the kitchen.
“Something happened?” Your father inquires, eyeing Billy suspiciously.
“No, no. It's just that...” Biting your lip, you wonder how you should say it. You don't know how they'll react. “I–”
“I'll be moving to California and I asked (Y/N) to come with me,” Billy says, and you freeze, eyes on your parents to see how they'll respond to this.
“Wait. What?” Your father asks. “You're going to move to the other side of the country?”
“...Well, it'll be closer to Arizona.” You say with a smile because you know they'll like it. “It'll be so much easier for us to see each other.”
They exchange a glance, and you see a shine in your mother's eyes. She was heartbroken when you left, and you know they'd both love to have you close. “Are you dropping out of college?” Philipp asks.
“No, Dad. I'll just transfer there.”
“Good. Because I won't allow you to give up on your dream. Not because of a guy, or anything.”
That makes you smile, holding Billy's hand. “I won't. We... We'll do it together.”
“You'll need a place to live, dear.” Your mother says, and you feel relieved. This isn't so bad. You know your parents will support you in every way, but you are nervous. Probably because you never thought anything like that would happen.
“We'll rent an apartment,” Billy speaks up.
“We can help with that. With some conditions, of course.”
“What conditions, Dad?” You furrow your eyebrows, and your mom looks as confused as yourself.
“I'll pay the rent until you graduate, (Y/N). To help you settle up and take some worry off your shoulders.”
“You don't have to, dad. We can make it.” You assure him, nodding. “We want to make it by ourselves.”
“Take it as a wedding gift,” Laura says, looking at her husband. Her words make you freeze, eyes wide. “Oh, honey, you think I didn't notice your rings?” She gestures at both your hands. Your father choked on air, also looking quite shocked. “If you're actually getting married, we could do better for a wedding gift.”
“My daughter is getting married?” Philipp mutters, looking at the floor. He's probably freaking out on the inside.
“We can give you a house there. Nothing huge, by the beach on one of those fancy neighborhoods, but a nice apartment for you to start your life together.” She smiles, and you don't even believe your ears. She should draw it, maybe it'd help you process the information.
“No. No, no, no...” You say, waving your hands dismissively. “We're not getting married now. Just... Someday. Not immediately.”
“Even so, rent is on me until you graduate. I won't be taking no for an answer.”
Taking a deep breath, you nod. “Okay... Can we eat? I'm hungry.” Gesturing at the kitchen table, you're relieved when they start moving there.
You put Liam and Tanya to cook today, and, much to your dismay, everything is great. You really wanted a reason to tease them, but this time, they got lucky. After the meal, you have lemon pie for dessert.
“So, Billy,” Philipp says after finishing his slice. “What do you do for a living and what are your plans.”
Oh no. Not this talking. “Dad, please...” You mutter, running a hand through your hair. The words come out fast because you don't want to go there. It's bad enough that you're 24 now, six years older than Billy until he turns nineteen.
“I just want to know what his plans for the future are.”
Swallowing hard, you sigh. Billy holds your hand under the table, and you look at his soft and reassuring eyes. “I'm still in High School, sir. We'll be moving to California in the Summer after I graduate and I'll work until she finishes college. Then I'll study too. I want to be a Marine Biologist.”
Your parents look at each other, seeming a little confused. “Mom, Dad, listen... Billy is eighteen, I get that it's super strange that we-”
“That's not it, that's not it.” You're cut off by Laura, shaking her head with a smirk on her lips. “It's just that we thought you were into older guys.”
“Yeah, but... Billy showed up and...” You're blushing, looking down with a small smile on your lips. You put up many walls to keep Billy away, but in the battle between heart and mind, the heart won. And you love him, you want him. And yes, age is just a number. You're both adults, and you're both in love. “I fell for him.” That's why you're doing this, that's why you decided to let him in. Into your life, into your heart.
“We still gotta talk, boy, you and I, but I can see you have strong feelings for each other. And as long as my daughter is happy, I'll support you.”
“Thanks.” You say with a smile.
“If we knew this would get so... Family stuff, we'd only come for the party,” Liam speaks up, and Tanya takes the deepest breath right before slapping him three times. “OUCH!! What the hell?!”
“The party was a surprise!” She yells, making you laugh.
“Don't bother. Liam let it out two weeks ago, I already knew.” Laughing, you stand up. “Never trust Liam with secrets, thought you already knew that.”
“I'm still learning.” She elbows him, and he groans.
The rest of the day goes by well, and the party happens when you get home after going out with Tanya so she can buy your gift. It wasn't a surprise, but the amazing decoration they made in only a couple of hours did surprise you. And this was the first time you and Billy were seen together. You did feel weird at first, with some looks and questions, but you also realized you didn't care. Billy is the one you love, and this happened. Against all odds, it happened. And you don't want to hide it anymore. So you kiss him, hug him, dance with him.
On the next morning, before sunrise, you said goodbye to your parents. They'll drive to Indianapolis and then to the airport. It's always a little emotional, but since they know you'll be a lot closer in a while, they feel better.
Then, time passes, and things remain the same. But Summer is getting closer.
When you see you won't have enough points to get that trip to Miami, you resign from the Tutoring program, helping only Billy, Max, and her party when they need it. You also got busy with the transfer files, and one of your teachers knows someone from the University of California, who works on the same campus you'll be going to, and she will get you a paid internship at one of the clinics she owns.
Things are going well, and every day is one less day on Billy's calendar. He's happy, you can see it on his face. And that makes you happy as well.
Today, you're with him and Max in his living room, watching this movie Max was talking about nonstop. It's Saturday afternoon, and Neil and Susan will be out until late at night. Billy didn't want to be here, but since your video player is broken, you decided to come. So, laying your head on his shoulder, completely focused on this mystery movie.
“You know she's gonna die, right?” Billy says, quite annoyed, as he always pretends to be. Because you know the difference. You learned to find the smile hidden behind it.
 “Shhh.” Max complains.
 “She's being stupid, she'll die.”
“Billy, shut the hell up.” Max raises her voice a little, above the movie.
“Guys, isn't it a little too loud? I can barely hear you.” Looking for the remote control, you only find it when Max sweeps it off your reach.
“Leave it. It's like we're at the movie theater.”
Rolling your eyes, you decide to let her have it, snuggling close to Billy again. “Kiss me if she dies.” He says in your ear.
“Rule number one of movie watching. No kissing allowed.” You remind him, raising your head to look into his eyes, making your lips teasingly brush on his before pulling away with a smile.
“But you gotta admit this chick is being stupid.” He gestures at the TV, and you have to nod. “When she dies-”
“What the hell is going on here?” The loud voice, full of anger doesn't come from the TV. It comes from the front door, from a very furious Neil, who looks like he could murder all three of you. Maxine is the first to move, standing up to her feet. Billy tenses up behind you, and you both move at the same time. Part of you wants to run, but there's no way to go. And no excuses this time. You were on his couch, almost kissing Billy. And you're wearing his shirt. You're definitely not playing teacher to Max. “What is this slut doing in my house?”

Love Confessions
The sun makes you use your hand to protect your eyes as you step out of Liam's car. Tanya is especially happy today, excited to get a tan. She never thought Hawkins would have weather like this, and honestly, neither did you.
“I hope this heat wave never leaves,” Liam says, smiling as the three of you enter the pool. “You know what? We should visit the lakes this weekend.”
 “Count me in.” You agree.
“Double date. Me and Tany, you and Billy. What do you think?”
Blushing, you roll your eyes. “Maybe. Guess you'll only know when we get there.”
“Over there,” Tanya says and you follow her to an empty table.
“We should've come sooner,” Liam complains and both you and Tanya roll your eyes. “What? Next time I'll come alone and you'll have to come by yourselves, ladies.”
“Oh my God, Liam. What would we do without you to drive us around.” Her sarcastic tone makes you laugh.
“You're so funny, Tany.” Liam snaps before looking around. “Is there someone famous visiting Hawkins? Because half the women here are looking over there.” He gestures at the other side of the pool.
“Show time, ladies.” You hear a woman saying in a low voice somewhere to your right.
Chuckling, you pinch your eyebrows together. But the confusion soon vanishes when you see exactly what they're talking about. Or better saying, who.
Billy comes out of the locker looking like a movie star. All eyes are on him, and so are yours. It feels like he's walking in slow motion, or maybe it's just your brain that's halfway through a mental breakdown. You've seen him shirtless before, but this is different, you're not sure how.
“(Y/N)? Are you in there?” Tanya snaps her fingers right on your face, and you look away from Billy, clearing your throat.
“I'm here.” Taking a look around, at all the girls drooling over Billy, you feel your stomach burning with anger. Chewing on the inside of your cheek, do your best not to think about what they're thinking. “I'm not sure coming to this stupid pool was a good idea.” It comes out suddenly, in a bitter tone. “The lakes are way better.”
“Uhh. Someone's jealous.” Liam chants and you turn at him, arms crossed. “If you're going to kill me, do it before next month's exam, please.”
“Shut up, Liam.” You tell him, looking for anything in your bag that can distract you from the whole thing.
“Hey, Princess.” Both the voice and the pet name make you raise your head, finding the center of all attention standing right before you. “You shouldn't have come,” Billy says as he walks around the table, coming closer to you. “How am I supposed to look over the pool with you here? You'll distract me.”
“If it makes you feel better, you're distracting almost everyone here.” Tilting your head at the pool, you cross your arms. “Even the married women are thirsting over you.”
“Jealous much?” He says, bending over to whisper in your ear.
Biting your lip, you push him away, a hand on his chest. “Not in public.”
“As you wish.” He smirks, nodding at your friends. “Need help applying sunscreen?”
“I applied it at home.” With a smirk, you shrug your shoulders. “Now, go lifeguard. Go watch the pool.” You push him away, but Billy holds your arm, giggling.
 “Won't you let me go?”
 “Never.”
You suddenly feel your friends' eyes on you, and when you give them a look, they're both staring. Clearing your throat, you turn to face Billy again. “Really, you should go. I don't want you to lose your job.”
“Fine. But when the pool closes, don't go. Wait for me, alright?”
 “What for?”
“Just don't go.” Pulling you closer, he places a kiss on your cheek.
Blushing like a tomato, you bite your lip and nod, watching as he walks away to his post.
“Look, I don't know about you ladies, but I'm going to swim a little.” Liam kisses Tanya and gives you a significant look before gesturing at Billy.
Rolling your eyes, you sigh. “Let's join the girls playing volleyball, Tany.”
 “Let's go.”
Before following her, you take the dress off, revealing the two-piece swimsuit, purple, pink, and black. As you walk along the pool, you shoot Billy a glance. He was already staring, so you give him a smirk and a wink.
The rest of the day goes by slowly, with you and your friends enjoying an entire afternoon of not talking about college. But soon enough the sun is setting, and people start to leave. Tanya and Liam hang around until there's barely anyone here, and when they leave, you move your stuff to the table next to Billy's chair. Taking off his sunglasses, the man looks down at you.
“You look absolutely beautiful, you know that right?” He says before jumping to the ground. “Been dying to tell you that.”
“You're breathtaking yourself. When you came out of the locker all the women here were staring.”
“You were jealous.” Billy pulls you closer, a hand around your waist.
“Mind the public.” You tell him with a whisper.
“The last person already left. And I told my fellow colleagues to leave earlier.”
“Mmm.” Mumbling, you let him pull you to him until you're pressed against his chest. “So, will you tell me what this is about?”
“We have the pool all to ourselves.” He starts walking, forcing you to move backward. “And no public to get in the way.”
“Are you even allowed to do that?”
“Who cares? I won't be here in Summer so they're welcome to fire me if they want.” That said, Billy moves suddenly, picking you up. “Better hold your breath, Princess.”
And you only have time to do as he says before he jumps in the pool, pulling you down with him before you both move back to the surface. You're laughing when you're above the water, wrapping your arms around his neck. “You know what? I call this a special occasion.”
Billy's lips break into a beautiful smile before he kisses you. It's wet at first, because of the water, but soon enough his taste overcomes everything. You want to kiss Billy all the damn time, and you have no idea why you don't.
Oh, it's because you don't see the point of making out with someone you have nothing with.
The thought makes you pull away, catching your breath.
“Hey. What's wrong?” He caresses your cheek, making you look up at him again.
“What are we?” You can't help but ask, wondering if this is a mistake. “You know what, never mind. I don't want to ruin the moment.”
“What do you want us to be?” He says in a low voice, strong arms holding you close. “Because I made it clear what I want.”
“I don't want to be just another fling.” Speaking low, you hope he can't see your blushing cheeks. “I want something real. Solid. Something that lasts.”
“We have to talk then,” Billy states and you both start moving to the edge.
Pinching your eyebrows together, you let Billy help you climb off. “If you look at my ass, Billy Hargrove, I swear to God-” And you push yourself up, looking down at him. “-I'll punch you in the face.”
“Then you can't look either, baby.” He mutters as he comes out as well, a smirk on his face. “Come, let's sit.” Billy takes you to the table near his lifeguard chair, passing you a towel before taking one to himself.
“What is it you want to talk about?”
Billy sighs, and you sit side by side, bodies turned toward each other. “I'm going to California when school is over.”
Nodding, you look down at your hands, keeping the towel from falling off your shoulders. “I know.” Your heart sinks, and you start mentally counting the days you'll still have him around. “Then what-”
“I want you to come with me.”
Raising your eyes at him, you freeze. “What?” You ask, but no sound comes out. “What do you mean by that, Billy?”
“I mean I want you to come with me. Live with me.” He takes your hand, placing a kiss on your knuckles. “I can't picture myself going and leaving you behind but I can't picture myself staying...”
“I don't want you to stay, not even because of me. This place isn't for you and you need to stay away from, well, your father. I just-”
“You won't live with someone you're not in a relationship with, I know.” He smiles, bringing one hand to caress your chin. “Be my girlfriend, (Y/N).”
Gasping, you bite your lip. This isn't about saying yes to being his girlfriend. It's about saying yes to moving to the other sound of the country. That's a lot. “We need a plan. And you need to be sure because if I move there with you and you dump me, I won't be mad, I'll be furious.”
Billy laughs, shaking his head lightly. “I would never propose such a thing if I wasn't sure I wanted you with me.”
“I'd have to transfer to a University there. And I'll have to start the process now so when I go it'll all be ready and we'll need a place to live and–”
“Slow down, Princess.” He cuts you off with a smile, furrowing his eyebrows. “Actually, go on. Because all that means your answer is yes.”
He got you there. You're making plans already, thinking about everything you'll need to do to go. Even before saying the word. “I guess...” You mutter, looking down at your hands again. “But there's a lot we have to go through before doing that.”
“A friend of mine has a job for me. They pay enough to rent a small apartment. I have some savings as well and I plan on getting into college. But if you're coming I could wait until you graduate and-”
“If we're doing this we have to plan it together.” You say, mind racing as you stand up, pacing around and leaving the towel behind. The sun is almost down, and the shadows are mixed with an orange, golden light. “California is a big city so that means a lot of job opportunities and I can pull up a part-time job. Actually, I can have some recommendation letters that would get me a nice job during college.”
Billy comes after you, and you turn to look at him. “I don't wanna mess up your studying.”
“I can do both. And we'd have a house to keep, we both will need jobs.”
“God, it sounds like we're getting married,” Billy says, chuckling.
“Oh, I...” Clearing your throat, you look away. That's not how you wanted to come out. “I'm just trying to think about how to make things work for both of us. You know overthinking is my thing and-”
“We should just get married then.” He cuts in, and his words make you stop. Make your heart stop. And you think the entire planet stopped spinning as well.
“Excuse me, what?” You nervously giggle, hands on your hips. “Are you serious? Because I don't like this kind of joke.”
Billy smiles, taking your arms and pulling you close to him. “It's simple math.”
 “You suck at Math, Billy.”
“First of all, ouch.” You giggle, surrendering to his embrace, wrapping your arms around his neck. “Second, I want this. I wanna go to Cali with you, live with you, and that, Princess, it's a freaking marriage. So I don't see why we shouldn't just do it.”
“You're not supposed to get married just because it makes sense. It's supposed to be a commitment between two people who are in love.”
“Well, Princess. I fell for you some time ago... So now I just need to know if you feel the same way.”
Biting your lip, you sigh. “I love you.” It comes out suddenly because you need him to know. Billy makes you feel safe and comfortable and loved. And God, you want to make him feel loved. Show him the amazing man he is, that he's nothing like his father. You want to stand by him, always. “I tried to fight it. Tried to give you all the reasons why this couldn't happen, but here we are.” Pecking his lips, you give a little jump, wrapping your legs around his waist. Billy is quick to hold you up, both hands grabbing your thighs. “And I was dying to kiss you again.”
“Well, now you can kiss me all the time.”
“Wait up, wait up.” You put a finger over his lips when he tries to kiss you. “If this whole thing happens, we'll need to tell my parents.”
“And how do we do that?” He bounces you up to have a better grip.
 “They're coming next weekend.”
“They're coming all the way here? Why?”
“Mmm... Because it's my birthday next Saturday.”
“Why didn't you tell me?!” He asks, making his way to the pool again. “I'll need time to get you the perfect gift.”
“Billy, I'll be turning-” You're cut short when Billy jumps into the pool.
You're both laughing when you go back up. “You're turning 24, I know, Princess.”
 “Mhmm.”
“Now, we can either talk about this dammed age gap or I can kiss you...”
“I rather you kiss me...” That makes him smile, and Billy bites your lower lip softly before capturing your lips in a passionate kiss.

A Vision from Hell
You couldn't drive for a while. When you got behind the wheel the next day, you couldn't do it. So, Billy, Tanya, and Liam took turns driving you through town until you got better. It took a few days, but they were patient with you.
But the days passed by and you got yourself back together. But today, since you slept at Tanya's, she dropped you at the Hawkins Elementary School, where you tutored a kid. But now, after a small, routine meeting with the principal and some teachers, it's time to go. You're crossing the small parking lot when you see Max chatting with her friends.
“I gotta go, I'm late.” She tells them, putting her skateboard on the ground and stepping on it. “Billy will be mad.”
“No, he won't.” You speak up when you're close enough, making the whole party look at you. “I'm going there anyway. Wouldn't mind the company.”
“Sure.” She shrugs, picking up the skate. “Guys, this is (Y/N). She's... Something of Billy's. Not quite sure yet.”
“Hi, I'm Dustin.” One of them says, the one with curly hair, shaking your hand. “These other jerks are Lucas, Will. Mike and Eleven.”
 “Eleven? Like the number?”
“El for short.” The girl nods with a small smile.
“Alright, let's go.” Max tilts her head and after waving at the kids, you start following her.
The day is warm, a little hot even, and you take off the light sweater you were wearing, tying it around your waist. You enjoy walking. Well, you enjoy walking here. The small town's slow pace is getting to you, and you like the simple streets and the many trees. Hawkins is a beautiful place, even though sometimes you feel like there isn't much to do.
“So. You and Billy, huh?” Max asks after a while. “You two are together or what?”
Blushing, you wonder if she knows Billy has been spending the nights with you. Almost every night, the only exception being when Neil is especially mad because you don't want him to explode at Billy. “We're... Seeing how things play out. Getting to know each other. Hanging out. Stuff like that.”
“Stuff like that. AKA dating.” She teases, looking at you with a smile. “Whatever it is, it's good for him. He's less of an asshole ever since you came into the picture.”
That's good to know. “Can I ask you something?” You continue when she nods. “You know I'm a little older than him, right?” Coming back to the same thought is tiring, you know it. But it's still something that hovers above your head. Not as much as before, but it's still there.
 “You're what? Nineteen?”
 “Twenty-three.”
“You come out as being around his age. And even if you didn't I don't think that's a big deal.”
“I just don't want it to be weird.” Max is part of Billy's life, and you want to be accepted by her. If she's ok with it, part of you feels relieved.
“Look, stupid people will find it weird. Stupid people like Neil. But they don't get a say in it.” You reach the High School parking lot, walking around the few people still going home. “Those who really matter, friends and family, those are the ones who will support you, as long as you're happy.”
“You're very mature for your age.” You tell her with a smile. “Thanks, Maxine.”
“Call me Max.” She lightly elbows you, throwing the board on the ground and skating the short distance to Billy's Camaro. “Hey, shitface.”
“You're late. Again.” You hear him saying as you walk around the hood, still out of his sight.
“I had to walk instead of skating.”
“Why? This thing is brand new, it can't be broken.”
“I made her walk.” You say, smiling when Billy turns around to look at you.
“Then it's you I should be mad at.”
“I'm not scared of you.” You whisper, heat spreading through your cheeks.
“Would the two lovebirds give it a break and drive me home before doing whatever you're doing?” Max complains as she gets inside the car.
Billy's eye roll makes you giggle as you make your way to the passenger seat.
Keeping the windows open, you feel the wind messing with your hair.
“Jerkface, why are you driving so slow?” Max asks after a while, on the edge of her seat, leaning forward and holding on to both your and Billy's seat. “Did you wreck your car again?”
“I'm under the speed limit.” He explains.
“So you obey the laws now?”
“I was in an accident I was a kid.” Turning your face to look at her, you gesture at the scar above your lip. “Got this after surgery to fix my wrecked lip. I lost my grandma and little brother that day.”
“Oh, sorry.” She says, a sad expression on her face. “Drive safely,” Max tells her brother, slapping his arm.
You wait for him to lash out at her, and by the look on her face, you know she's waiting for it too. But it doesn't come. Billy just rolls his eyes, hanging his arm out the window.
“God, it's so hot.” The redhead complains as Billy enters their street. “Won't this heat wave go away?”
“Not so soon. They're planning on opening the pool.” Billy adds.
 “Pool?”
“Hawkins Community Pool. I worked there last summer as a lifeguard so they gave me a call.” Billy answers as he stops the car and steps out. You do the same but stand by the open passenger door. “They usually open in the Summer they're considering it because of this heatwave.” He gestures at the house. “Come. Neil isn't home, I'll show you the place.”
“Alright.” Pushing the door close after taking your bag, you follow them through the sidewalk.
“(Y/N), you're a tutor, right?” Max asks and you nod. “Could you help me? They'll only assign me to someone if I fail.”
“Sure, I can help you off the records. What do you need help with?”
“English. I suck and my teacher is definitely evil.” You enter the house as she speaks, looking around.
“It's not the subject I'm tutoring but I can give you a hand. Just tell me when you're free so we can find a gap in my schedule.” Your eyes fall on the bench press in the middle of the living room, and it screams Billy Hargrove.
“I'm free right now.” She exclaims.
“Maxine, don't even think about it,” Billy warns.
“Look, you're dating a decent, nice girl who is smart. Let me enjoy the benefits.” The girl snaps back, gesturing at the hall. “I'll get my stuff.”
“Sure.” Smiling, you put your bag on the couch, but it falls and opens, spreading some papers around. “Shit.” You mumble as you kneel to catch them.
Billy does the same, handing you a small pile of papers at the top of a notebook. “House of the Next Century?” He asks, and you look at the blue sheet of paper on the top of the pile.
“It's an exposition from the Architecture School.” Putting everything back inside the bag, you stand up. “Liam's sister takes that course so she's involved and invited us.”
 “Sounds interesting.”
“We can go if you want. But you know what else is interesting? Having a freaking bench press in the middle of the living room.”
 “Oh, you noticed.”
“How could I miss it?” Walking over it, you check the weights. “Can you really lift those things? They're huge.” Holding the bar, you give a little push, but nothing moves.
“I can make a show if you want.” Billy moves closer, but his eyes are on you.
“You're so cocky, Billy.” Blushing, you look away, biting your lip.
“When are you going to let me kiss you again?” He suddenly asks, taking you by surprise.
You and Billy haven't kissed since that night, you're not sure why. “I don't know... On some special occasion, maybe.”
“Special occasion, huh?” He says, a smirk taking over his lips. “I can work on that.”
“You two can make out later, I need help,” Max speaks, making her way to the kitchen.
“Duty calls.” Winking at Billy, you turn around and follow Maxine.
The two of you get the kitchen table, and you have to read a couple of things to pick up what she needs help with. It's not that complicated, and you still remember some things from school, so it doesn't take much until you're explaining to her. Billy comes to the kitchen every once in a while, but as the night falls and after he makes the three of you a sandwich, he sticks around, listening.
It gets to you that they're doing better. You don't think Billy hates his step-sister, they just annoy each other as all siblings do. And it even makes you laugh sometimes.
“You could help me with History too,” Max says as she looks for chapter 7 of her book. “And Geography.”
 “I sure can.”
“Maxine, stop stealing my girl's time.” Billy snaps, and you giggle.
“I'm not your girl.” With both elbows on the take, a smirk comes to your lips.
“Ouch!” The girl exclaims. “That must've hurt.”
“Yet.” You decide to add soon after.
“On your face, shitbird,” Billy answers, and you can't help but laugh.
“The two of you are crazy.” You mumble in between laughs. “I really–” You're cut off not by the front door opening, and by the way Billy stands up abruptly, and Max's eyes go wide, you know who it is.
“I told Anne we'd be joining them on Saturday.” A woman's voice speaks, and you wonder what you should do. Both Billy and Max seem nervous.
“Alright then. She better make something good or else it'll be a waste of my damn time.” A man says, not sounding very excited about the woman's plans.
“We have to-” Billy starts, but he stops talking the moment a man comes into the kitchen.
Neil's eyes find you immediately, lingering for quite a while, flying then to Billy and Max. “Who is this girl in my house?” He inquires in a rude tone.
“This is (Y/N). She's one of the tutors from the new campus and she's helping me study for the tests.” Max answers, and the woman, Susan, comes to the kitchen as well.
Unlike Neil, she kindly smiles and walks over to you. “Hello, (Y/N). I'm Susan, Maxine's mother. Thanks for helping her.”
“No need to thank me. I'm just doing my job.” You shyly say, shaking Susan's hand.
“Come on, Neil. Let's leave them to do their thing.” Susan turns to face Neil.
“What about you? What are you doing here?” He asks Billy.
You can feel anger irradiating from him, and you just want to grab his hand and take him away. The atmosphere is heavy, almost tangible. You can tell Neil is trying not to let it show, but it's obvious. You can feel it. “Got hungry and made myself a sandwich.”
“Then be a gentleman once in your life and make some for your sister and her teacher.”
“He already did.” You speak up, way too abruptly, trying not to let your anger show. Under the table, you clench your fists.
Neil nods exchanging a glance with his son. “Get back to your room then.”
You shouldn't say anything. You should let it go and talk to Billy after. But you can't. “He's helping us.”
 “He is?”
“Yes.” Max bursts out, looking at Neil. “He was making questions.”
Neil doesn't believe it, but after glancing at Susan, he nods. “Alright then.”
“She was leaving anyway,” Billy says.
“(Y/N) could stay for dinner, right, honey?” Susan asks Niel with a smile. “To thank her for helping Max.”
“That would be lovely, but I have somewhere to be.” With a forced smile, you stand up.
“Me too. I can give her a ride home.”
“Sure. Thanks, Billy.” Nodding, you walk around the table. “Max, let me know when you're free so we can continue, alright?”
 “Alright, (Y/N). Thank you.”
“Good night, Mr. and Mrs. Hargrove.” You mutter, heading for the front door and stopping only to take your bag.
Billy takes a minute to reach you on the sidewalk, and you wonder what Neil just told him. In silence, you both get into the car and you only relax when he drives away.
“I'm sorry about that.” Billy apologies, eyes on the road. “I thought they'd be out until later.”
“It wasn't your fault.” Reaching out your arm, you touch his shoulder. “I had a nice time with you and Maxine.”
 “Me too, (Y/N)...”
There's pain in his voice, and it breaks your heart. “What's wrong?”
“I don't want you near Neil. I don't want him looking at you as if-” He stops speaking, running a hand through his hair. “Neil has a taste for young girls. He cheats on Susan on a regular basis and I can't have him thinking about you that way.”
You feel weird, remembering how he stared at you. “I'm sorry. But it doesn't matter now. Let's go home and order a pizza.” You only understand what you said when the words already left your mouth. And when you look at Billy, you see a smile he's trying to hide. So you can't take it back. You'll just let it be if it makes him happy. “I want pepperoni.”
 “Pepperoni it'll be then.”
“Oh, and I have a request, Hawkins Community Pool lifeguard. Who do I have to pay to have that pool open? I wanna enjoy a free sample of Summer.”
“I'll see what I can do for you, Princess.” He looks at you with a smile, the one that belongs to you alone.

Anchor
Your skin freezes, and you're there again. The speed, the tree, the crash. The metal bending as if it were paper.
Your grandmother's dead body on the back sits next to you, covered in blood, and your little brother's shallow breath, as he holds onto his life, hopelessly, just to die at the hospital hours later.
It flashes, burns through your head, suffocating you, blinding you. When the car stops, it's your instinct alone that has your body moving. And you're rushing out of the car, with your entire body hurting so bad you can't even tell where.
But you don't go too far. You stumble, falling and staying down, eyes open, staring at the grass and soil under your hands, blurred by the many tears. Your brain is slow to come back to reality. Slow to understand there's no ambulance coming, no need to go to the hospital with James. There's a yell caught in your throat, the same yell that you shouted that day when you saw your baby brother half dead.
“(Y/N).” A voice breaks through your desperation. It's familiar, deep, but comforting. And the same comfort suddenly embraces you, and you're surrounded by warmth. “It's alright. It's alright.” You're pulled up, and you hold on to him as if he was your anchor. Your entire life. The only thing keeping you sane, and grounded.
You can't speak, so you just cry, hiding your face on his chest. Billy says something, and you hear other voices answering. Sorrowful voices, apologetic voices, in clear contrast with Billy's anger. But whatever they're saying, you don't care. It's not important now.
You're not sure for how long you stand there, kneeling on the ground, hugging Billy. But after a while, he managed to bring you to the curb, where you sit now, with his arm around you as you rested on his shoulder, forehead on his neck.
“We should go.” You mumble after a while, barely listening to your own voice. You wish you could stay here, forever maybe. But you know Billy can stay seated on a curb with an emotional girl all night long.
 “Are you sure?”
Taking a deep breath and wiping some tears off, you nod. “W-what happened?”
“Some kid learning how to drive came up the street too fast.” He speaks slowly, a hand softly rubbing your back.
“Is your car alright?” Raising your head, you look for his Camaro, finding it on the other side of the street.
“Just a nasty cracker bumper. But the kid's father will pay, he was in the car with him.”
“Ok...” Gathering some strength, you push yourself up, quickly followed by Billy. “I-I'm sorry. I know it wasn't a big crash or anything but I just–”
“Hey, don't apologize.” He pulls you closer again, and you collapse against his chest. “I can walk you home if you want.”
“No.” You mumble, shaking your head. “I'm alright. Let's go.”
Billy walks you to the car, and you take a deep breath as you sit down. He gives you a long stare before starting the car, driving slowly. “Wanna hold my hand?” He offers after a while.
“But you'll need the hand to change the gear.”
“I'll drive on second gear all the way to your place.” He says, giving you his hand, which you take.
 “That's terribly slow.”
 “There's no problem with that.”
Nodding, you intertwine your fingers with his.
It takes a little too long, but you're relieved when he stops by your place. Your legs are still a bit weak, so you're thankful for Billy walking you to the front door.
There, you stop, a shaking hand on the handle. “Thank you, Billy... For everything. And I'm sorry for freaking out.”
“Don't apologize. I'm sorry too. I didn't want our date to end like that.”
“It was great. I... I want us to have another.” You shyly speak, not wanting to go inside just yet.
“So I can ask you out on a second date?” He smiles, warming up your heart. You nod, heat spreading through your cheeks. “Great.”
 “Yeah...”
“...Will you be alright?” He asks, a hand caressing your chin. “You still look frightened.”
You want to say yes, but the words get caught in your throat. “I'll have nightmares but... I think I'll be fine.” It comes out barely a whisper.
“Do you want me to stay?”
This makes you raise your head, looking into his eyes despite the darkness. It makes your heart beat faster, and before you know it, you're nodding.
 “Alright, let's get inside then.”
Doing as he says, you two get inside. And you head to the bathroom to take a shower to help calm you down. Billy goes after, but only after you assure him you'll be fine alone for some minutes.
And you do. The only thing you do is take the box from your wardrobe, open it, and spread the pictures on the bed. You're crying again, looking at James's pictures.
“Can I meet your brother?” Billy asks, coming from the bathroom to sit next to you on the bed.
Choosing one of the pictures, you hand it over to Billy. “Billy Hargrove, meet James.” The kid has a bright smile on his face, seated on the porch of your house in Arizona, holding a huge colorful truck, showing it off to the camera.
“He has freckles,” Billy says, checking the picture. “And eyes like yours.”
“Yeah.” Leaning on Billy, you smile when you feel his arm around you. He's shirtless again, you don't know why. But you don't mind. Maybe you shouldn't be this... Intimate. But right now you need it. If you were alone... You'd be crashing down. “He was my baby.”
“I'm sorry, Princess,” Billy whispers, placing a kiss on your forehead. “If you have a son, I think you should name him James.”
Raising your head to look at him, you smile a little. “That's a good idea.” And that's when you move, not sure if out of impulse, or if it happens involuntarily. But you kiss him, full on the lips. You pull away shortly after, remaining close as the ghost of his lips can still be felt on yours. “I'm sorry... I just...”
“Come here.” Grabbing your arm, Billy gently pulls you closer, and you don't resist. As he rests his back on the headrest of your bed, you climb on top of him, both your legs over his, allowing him to cradle you. Billy lifts your head with his index finger, and you close your eyes when he kisses you. It's slow, soft, and warm. His lips move with yours, not asking for too much, just following your pace. Right now, you don't think about anything else, just this. Just him. This kiss, his arms holding you.
Parting your lips further apart, you deepen the kiss, a hand caressing his cheek. Everything he did for you today meant a lot. Nobody ever did anything like this for you. No guy was ever so patient, so understanding and caring. And for all that, and the growing feelings inside you, you kiss him. Long, hot, and desperate. You've been wanting to kiss him for quite a while now, and this is how a date is supposed to end.
But when you need to breathe, you're forced to pull away. You're a blushing mess, catching your breath. “I knew you'd be a good kisser,” Billy says and you giggle.
“You're a jerk sometimes.” You whisper, looking up at him.
“As long as I make you laugh.” He places a kiss above your lip, right on the scar. “But you should get some sleep now, so...” Picking you up, Billy puts you in a lying position. “I'll grab the pics for you.”
“Thanks.” Smiling, you watch as he takes the photos, puts them in the box, and places them on your dresser. Then he turns off the light and comes to bed, lying down next to you. You immediately move to lay your head on his chest, eyes closing. “I like when the nights end up like this.” You tell him, index finger drawing shapes on his chest.
 “Me too.”
“I...” The words get stuck in your throat because you're not sure if they should be said. But if it backfires, you can always say it was the sleep talking. “I wish every night could be like this.”
“Me too.” He repeats, sighing, his chest moving up and down. “We could make it work.”
 “But–”
“Neil doesn't care as long as Max is ok.” He cuts you off, and you raise your head to look at him.
“But we shouldn't. This is way too... Intimate. And I don't want to force you into it just because I feel... Just because I like it.”
“Princess, you're not forcing me into anything. I want to be here with you and... Here, with you, I feel happy. Like I haven't felt before.”
“Sleep here with me then.” You mumble, eyes closed as you breathe in, getting more comfortable.
 “Alright, Princess. Goodnight.”
Sleep comes easily, and the fear you felt before doesn't come in nightmares, as it once did. And when you wake up, with Billy hugging you from behind, you feel only good things. Comfort, happiness, bliss. Things you can't even find the right words to describe. But they're good. They're so damn good.

Every Damn Time
The bell rings when you're checking yourself in the mirror. You made some waves in your hair to add some volume and decided to wear a dress. Taking a deep breath, you apply some lipgloss before heading out. There's a heat wave over Hawkins, so when you open the door, you're greeted by Billy and a fresh blow of wind.
“Whoa, Princess.” He says, looking you up and down before smirking. “You look absolutely gorgeous.”
Biting your lip, you blush as you pull the door close behind you. Quickly checking Billy out, you raise an eyebrow. “Your shirt is buttoned all the way up.” You tell him, making your way to his car.
“I want to make this right.” Billy moves ahead, opening the passenger door, which surprises you. “But I can undo some of them if you want.”
“You're unbelievable.” Rolling your eyes, you get inside the car.
When Billy starts driving, you buckle up. “Where are we going?”
“Drive-in cinema.” He says, looking at you.
 “Sounds fun.”
 “Hope you'll like the movie.”
°°°
The place is full, but you manage to get a good spot. But the movie isn't that good. It's a slasher movie, but it's very boring. It doesn't feel like it's going anywhere, and all the characters are shallow and stupid, and you can't help but laugh at some fake dialogues and stupid choices. Billy seems restless after a while, you're not sure why. Turning your body towards him and deciding to ignore the movie, you get his attention. “What's up?”
 “What do you mean?”
“You're clearly not happy.” Maybe he's reconsidering, and not interested in hanging out with you anymore. So you look down, thankful for the darkness. “You can take me home if you want, I don't want you to-”
“What? No.” He cuts you off, and you raise your eyes at him again. “That's not it. I just thought this movie would be a good one but it sucks.” Billy looks around, sighing. “And there's no way we can get out of here until this shit is over.”
You don't want to smile. Or feel relieved. But both things happen anyway. Your eyes wander from his face to something behind him, and beyond the line of cars, you spot a space. “Don't worry about it. Come.” Tilting your head to the side, you leave the car, soon followed by a very confused Billy.
 “Where?”
“Just come.” Grabbing his jacket, you pull him through the cars, trying to move fast enough so people won't complain.
The empty spot you saw was an old restaurant's outside area, and the only reason why there aren't any cars here is that there's no sight of the screen from here. It's pretty dark, lit up only by the low lights from the drive-in. The concrete floor gives space to some bushes, high enough to hide you from any curious eyes. You can still hear the movie, but it's not so loud over here.
You find some concrete planks left near a tree, so you move there, sitting down as Billy does the same. “Better than watching that movie. And we can talk better.”
“We sure can,” Billy mutters, and you put a strand of hair behind your ear.
Earlier today you were praying to Heavens not to be completely alone with Billy. It makes you feel funny and sends ideas racing through your head. And public places tend to restrain certain actions. But here you are, in a dark parking lot where nobody can see the two of you. And you put yourself in this position. You don't know what happens, but when you're with Billy, it's like you forget all the rules. It all falls apart. The heart wins every damn time.
“Tell me about your family.” Billy suddenly says, and you furrow your eyebrows.
“You wanna know about my family?” Chuckling, you turn your body towards him, crossing your legs.
“It got me by surprise too, Princess. But yes, I do wanna know.”
Taking a deep breath, you decide to go with it. If he was the one to ask, maybe he does want to know. “My parents are nice, I can't complain. Mom is quite a hothead and my father is the one to slow her down. From my grandparents, I only have my father's father. He lives on the same street my parents do back in Arizona. My uncle doesn't speak to us and we don't speak to him ever since the accident. He lost a leg and has been living with his new wife in Texas.” Shrugging your shoulders, you don't know what else to say. “I guess that's it. It sounds very boring.”
“Do you blame him? For the accident?”
The question gets you by surprise, and you clear your throat. “I did. I... I don't know. I'm not sure if I forgave him but the truth is, I don't think he'll ever forgive himself.” You speak low, eyes on the floor. “All the contact we have with him is when father sends him a Christmas card. I'm not sure why he keeps doing that since Uncle Davis never sends anything back. I guess he can't face us anymore.” Swallowing hard, you feel the familiar lump in your throat. “I try not to think about it. The accident, my uncle... It's a constant fight between not thinking about it and carrying their memories with me.”
“My mother abandoned me.” He says after some seconds of silence. “But that you already knew.” Billy chuckles, but it's a dry, unhappy sound. You don't want him to speak about her if that means he'll hurt. But you can't stop him. “She was the only person who truly loved me, I guess. We used to spend a lot of time at the beach, away from Neil. Some days we stood there for hours.” His voice is barely a whisper, and you move closer to him. “I used to surf and she was quite proud, I think.” He looks away, and you wonder if he's holding his tears back. Seeing Billy in pain makes you hurt too. And you wish you could do something to help. “Then one day she couldn't take Neil anymore. I don't blame her for leaving, because I saw what he did to her, but I can't understand why she left me with that devil.” Billy raises his voice a bit, getting angry. “After she left, Neil got even worse.”
You're crying now, a few tears rolling down your cheeks. “I can't say I know how you feel, but I can imagine.” Taking a deep breath, you touch his shoulder. “Maybe... Maybe she's still out there and if it would make you feel better you could try to find her. Talk to her and ask her why.”
“Have you ever asked your uncle why? Why he was driving so fast with a kid in the front seat? Or why he didn't keep his eyes on the road?” He speaks fast, staring into your eyes.
Shaking your head, you wipe a tear away. You know what he means. “No, I haven't. It wouldn't change anything.”
“Exactly.” He mutters. “I don't wanna find her, I just wanna go back.”
“I understand.” Whispering, you move even closer, until your leg is touching his. There's something else you want to ask, but you're not sure how to put it. You don't want to put salt in the wound, but you're just trying to see the person behind the mask he puts on for the rest of the world. “Billy, do you really mean it? That you don't feel loved by anyone?” Keeping your voice as low as a whisper, you suddenly take his hand. It happens out of nowhere, but you just need him to know you're here. That he's not alone. “You don't have to answer if you don't want to.”
Billy smiles a sad, broken smile. He probably didn't want you to get this deep. “No.” He simply says, sighing. “To Neil, I'm just a pain in the ass. To Max, I'm just Neil's trash son. To Susan, I'm nothing but an inconvenience.”
“But you're always in some kind of relationship. I'm sure the girls-”
“The longest relationship I had lasted two weeks and trust me, you don't need love for that.”
°°°
Billy had many plans for today. He wanted to make it a real date, one where he'd get to know her and allow her to get to know him. Have a good time, maybe some romantic talking or stuff like that. But he wasn't counting on this.
He has a rock for a heart, as many girls have told him. But ever since (Y/N) came into his life, his heart is turning into flesh. And it beats, it aches, it hurts. And he was never the one to deal with pain. Billy is the kind of person who ignores it or breaks things to make it go away. But here he is, heart wide open, feelings flowing out.
But that's all thanks to her. It's all because of her. No other girl ever made him feel like that. No other girl made him feel comfortable enough to let these things out.
This girl is messing with him. With his mind, heart, body, everything.
“Wanna know why I've never really got into any relationships?” She looks at him with kind eyes, glistening a little from the tears, and he nods. “Because no guy ever made me feel... Loved. I mean, romantically loved. They all had some kind of game. Not calling you, or just calling after three days. Or pretend they don't like you... Shit like that. But other than that, I do feel loved... And, please, don't take it the wrong way, I'm not bragging about it or-”
“Hey, you don't have to worry about me.” He assures her, tightening the grip on her hand. “Believe me, I'd never want you to feel the way I do. And I'm happy you have a family that loves you. You deserve it, you deserve so much more.” (Y/N) smiles, a small, shy smile before she looks at their holding hands. “But I get what you mean. Go on.”
“It's a little stupid, but blame it on my hopeless romantic ass. I just never felt like the guys I hung out with really wanted to be with me. I'm not even sure what exactly I was looking for, but... I don't know. It never clicked, I guess.”
God, he hopes it finally clicked now. “Well, a girl like you shouldn't settle for anything. Guys like me... They only want one thing. The thing I used to get way too easily if I knew who to ask.”
“Yeah....” She stands up, pacing around and bracing herself. The soft fabric of her dress is easily carried with the wind every time it blows, but Billy doesn't stare as much as he would if she were anyone else. He looks long enough to respectfully admire her beauty. And yes, that's another thing that took him by surprise. “Is that what you want now?” (Y/N) inquires, and it takes a second for him to understand what she means. “Be honest, Billy. Because I don't want to waste my time and neither should you.”
“When I want sex, I only have to ask once.” He says as he gets up, voice dead serious. For the first time, he's not playing games. “If they say no, or if they play hard to get, I just go find someone else.” He walks over to her, stopping before her smaller figure. “If that was everything I wanted, I'd have made it clear.”
“Then tell me with all the words. What do you want with me?” She runs a hand through her hair, and when he notices that she shivers a bit, Billy takes off his jacket. “Hey, don't.” (Y/N) complains, but he's already putting it around her shoulders. “I already have one of your jackets.”
“Now you'll have two.” He simply says, rubbing her arms. “For the first time in my life, I want something real. I never thought it would happen, and I was hoping it wouldn't because I hate feeling this...” His voice fades.
“Vulnerable?” She finishes the sentence, and that's exactly the right word. The word he hates, the feeling he hates.
Billy is a heartbreaker because his heart is broken. He never wanted the risk of another disappointment.
“Vulnerable.” He repeats, looking down for a few seconds before raising his eyes to her again. “I want this. I want you, not only for one night, or one week.” The words come out fast, and he can't pretend he enjoys saying this. But he needs to let her know.
“You... You know I'm 23, right?” (Y/N) mutters, and he notices as she steps closer.
 “Soon to be 24.”
“Soon to be 24.” She repeats.
“I don't care,” Billy assures her, a hand caressing her cheek. The next words flow out of his mouth almost involuntarily. He knows she's causing this, she's pulling him, like a magnet. And his poor heart has no choice. So the dangerous sentence flows out his tongue. “I think I'm falling in love with you.”
°°°
At his words, you freeze. Well, your body freezes, because your heart is beating as fast as ever. Did he really say it? Did you hear it right? “D-do you mean it? Because I've been losing my mind and-”
“I mean every word.” He sounds, brutally, extremely honest. And you believe him.
“Ok, I-” You're cut off by a sudden commotion, and some lights being turned on. “Movie is over.”
“Great.” He says, taking your hand. “Let's go have some dinner.”
°°°
To your surprise, Billy took you to a restaurant. You thought he'd take you to have some pizza or something like that, and you'd be completely fine with it, but the restaurant did surprise you.
Well, everything about today is surprising, in a good way.
It's almost midnight now, as he drives you home. After having dinner you stopped at this ice cream parlor and chatted for a while longer. It didn't feel like either of you wanted the night to end. But it's inevitable.
“Did you have a good time?” Billy asks when he stops at the red light.
“I did.” Nodding and smiling, you hope he can't see your blushing cheeks. “This was the best date I had.” Quickly, you mentally count the few dates you went to, all of them a failure.
 “On that, we can agree.”
Then, the last thing that usually happens on a date crosses your mind. It's not a rule, but it's a custom. The good-night kiss. You can find it in any cheesy romantic movie there is, and you can't help but think if this has crossed his mind. But, since you're feeling just a little bit brave, you decide to ask. “So... Are you planning on-”
A loud, screeching noise cuts you off, coming from the street on your right. And the moment you turn to see, you don't have time to process what's happening because something hits the car hard enough to send it spinning around through the street.

Intimacy
The first thing you notice when you wake up is the familiar scent on the sheets. Billy's cologne, which you grew to like. But he's not here, and when you're just about to call his name, you hear the shower being turned off.
Sitting up, you run a hand through your hair, sighing. Maybe letting him stay wasn't a good idea. Weren't you supposed to end this? Or don't let it go anywhere? So why are you doing the exact opposite? Letting him stay, sleeping in his arms? Loving the brand new experience of sleeping next to someone?
What went wrong from one point to the other? You lost track of it.
You're still immersed in thoughts when the bathroom door opens, and a shirtless Billy comes out. He seems surprised to see you up, and you raise an eyebrow at him.
You're seriously trying not to look.
“I hope you don't mind me using your shower.”
“Well, you did sleep on my bed. Guess it's ok to use the shower.” Standing up, you take a deep breath, eyes on the bathroom door to avoid staring at him. “My turn now.”
“Hey.” He calls, and you turn around. “You look so cute when you're asleep.”
His smirk makes you blush, so you roll your eyes and head to the bathroom, closing the door shut.
You do take more time than necessary because you need to think. The thought of shutting Billy out crosses your mind, but something tells you that, if you even try, it's a battle your heart will win. So make up your mind for now. If Billy wants to go, because he'll have to go eventually, he'll do it himself.
All that so you won't admit to yourself you want him to stay.
When you're off the bathroom, Billy is nowhere to be found. It's a confusion of feelings between relief and loneliness, but before you can even start to work on that, you hear a noise downstairs. He's still here.
Dressing up before going downstairs, you find Billy in the kitchen... Messing up with your stuff... Still shirtless.
“...What are you doing? And please, don't set my grandmother's house on fire.”
As you walk over to the countertop, Billy gives you an annoyed look. “I happen to be quite good at making waffles and you happen to have a waffle iron.” He gestures at the thing, already on.
If Billy were anyone else, you'd be... Annoyed. You don't like people who you're not intimate with going through your stuff... But for some reason, you don't mind it. You're impressed. “Then I'll sit here and wait as you make me breakfast.” Moving to the kitchen island, you ignore his smirk. “Won't your father be mad at you not only for sleeping out but also for not going home at the break of dawn?” You can't help but ask when the thought crosses your head.
“No, don't worry. He doesn't care. Actually, I think he can't wait until I find a job and get out.” Billy sighs, his muscular back moving smoothly. “And neither can I.”
When you hear the pain in his voice, you curse yourself for bringing that up. So you decide to change the topic and lighten up the mood. “So... How many girls were lucky enough to have you make them waffles?”
Billy giggles, putting the blatter in the waffle iron. “Believe it or not, you're the first.”
 “Really?”
“The second, actually.” Furrowing his eyebrows, he leans on the countertop, looking at you.
“Oh...” Clearing your throat, you look away, not wanting to think about who else might have had the pleasure.
“The other one was Max. I had some made for me and Max had one.” He says and you look back at him, biting your lip. “What?”
 “Nothing, Billy.”
“Alright.” He smiles, and soon enough he's done with the waffles and you decide to sit in the living room and eat while watching some TV.
But the TV is quickly forgotten, as you chat about small things. Talking to Billy is... Easy. And with all those things away from your head, you feel able to enjoy his company.
“What do you think about my grandmother's house?” You ask after drinking what's left of your orange juice.
“I like it. Way better than my place.”
 “And how's your place?”
 “Trash.”
Giggling, you roll your eyes. “Well, this thing is that when you have your own place you can decorate it the way you like. When I lived with my parents I had to endure those awful paintings they have in the living room.”
“Let me guess. Some abstract shit.”
Nodding, you laugh. “There's a huge painting, right above the fireplace. The background is white and there are only two vertical blue lines.” You laugh again remembering it, folding both legs under you and turning your body towards him. “My father says it's... Transcendent.”
 “God.” Billy mumbles, laughing too.
“He says it makes him think about the duality of life and death and I'm like... How the hell did you get that from two vertical blue lines?” Furrowing your eyebrows, you shrug. “It just sucks, believe me.”
“Oh, I do.” He giggles. “What are your plans for today by the way?”
“Mmm... Lunch with Tanya and Liam. And since they have a date later tonight I'll head back home and I don't know, watch something nice maybe.” His staring makes you blush, glancing at the TV. “You? Do you have some girl to hang out with today?”
“I will if you go out with me.”
 Whoa, he's not kidding. “What?”
 “Let me take you out.”
 “Billy...”
“C'mon,” He takes your hand, and you look at him again. “Give me a chance. One date, that's all I'm asking. And if you hate it, or feel uncomfortable with the whole age thing-” He rolls his eyes. “-you just have to tell me and I won't bother you anymore.” He sounds so serious... As if he's pleading. Can a guy like Billy even do that?
Your brain wants to say no right away. But your heart... “Alright.” You whisper, looking at your joined hands. “Tonight then. One date.” Standing up, you look down at him. “But I want a real date. Not whatever you do with the girls.”
“Trust me, princess.” He gets up as well, standing tall before you. “I'll make it work.”
•••
“You're going to do what?” Liam asks, coming back from the kitchen.
As if he didn't hear the whole conversation. Rolling your eyes, you take the soda can from his hand, cracking it open. “I'm going on a date with Billy.”
 “A real date?”
“A real date.” You repeat, taking a sip.
“You know I'll stand by you no matter what, but you gotta be careful. You've never been through heartbreak and trust me, it's not nice.” Tanya warns you, putting her can on the coffee table. Liam, from the armchair, nods. You knew them only for a couple of years, but the connection was immediate. And the three of you have shared everything. So they both know you very well, and you always pay attention to their advice.
 “I've been through that before.”
“Yeah, but you had crushes. And I don't think this one is just a crush.”
“Tanya is right,” Liam adds. “The age gap, as minimum as it is, is a big deal to you. And if you managed to see past that... This is definitely more than just a crush.”
Looking down at your hands, you sigh. It's not that you don't want to tell them, you just... You don't want to create false hopes. Or make it more real than it already is. “I like Billy, I... I like being around him. It feels good.”
“It feels good being around the two of you.” Liam gestures at you and Tanya. “Because she's my girlfriend and you're my best friend. So just enjoying being around someone doesn't necessarily mean it'll take a romantic turn.”
Yeah... you're aware of that. “We, Mmm... We slept together last night.”
Tanya's eyes go wide, and Liam gives her a look. “What!!?”
Wait. Wrong choice of words. “Whoa, that's not what I mean. Billy climbed through my window after a fight and... He was quite upset so I invited him to stay and that was it.”
 “That was it?” Liam asks.
“And how did that feel?” Tanya asks, ignoring Liam's question.
Blushing, you run a hand through your hair. “Just... Look, I know this is complicated. Billy has a bad reputation, and I'm... I'm five years older, but it's just a date. He asked for a chance and I wanted to give it to him. After last night, I just... If it doesn't work it's over anyway.”
“You're good at judging character so I believe you'll be fine. But be careful.”
“And have fun,” Liam says, winking at you.
Rolling your eyes, you blush. “I will.”
“Okay, what you gonna wear?” Liam asks in a sarcastic tone, in his best performance of Tanya's voice, making you both laugh.
You're still on the fence about this, but you'd be lying if you said you're not excited. But it would be wise not to have your hopes so high because this date could be the end. And maybe it would be for the best.

A Stolen Heart
The warm water helps you relax. The next project is almost over, which means you'll have some free time on the horizon. Your friends left half an hour ago, so your plans are to shower and go to sleep.
Once out of the water spray, you dry yourself and brush your hair before putting the pj's on, lycra shorts, and an old oversized shirt. You're tired as you climb onto the bed, fixing the blankets and getting comfortable, and sleep comes easy.
But a noise startles you awake, dragging you back into consciousness in half a second. You ignore it though, the bed is too warm and comfortable. But the noise gets louder, and a little too close for your taste. So you snap fully awake, immediately taking in the weird thud and sitting up, looking at the window.
All air leaves your lungs when you see a figure crawling through your window. In a fast move, you stand up, taking the lamp you have on the nightstand and raising it above your head. “Get the hell out of my house or I'll call the police!” You yell, walking backward until you hit the wall.
“Calm down.” An oddly familiar voice says, and you furrow your eyebrows, trying to think despite the heavy haze of sleep over your mind. “Where's the light switch?”
“Who are you?” You ask, the moment you recognize the silhouette, only lit up by the dim lights coming from outside. “Billy?”
“Yeah. Put that down.”
“What the hell-” Walking back to the nightstand, you put the lamp back in its place. “-are you doing here?”
“Just needed to see you.”
“Are you insane?” Walking to the door, you turn the lights on. “What do you think you're doing sneaking into my bedroom like that?” Billy definitely crossed a line now, and you can't just let it go.
“You're right I shouldn't have come.” Billy bursts out, suddenly angry, like you never saw before. You're about to ask why he's talking like that when you see it. When Billy turns around, heading to the window, you see a purple bruise on the apple of his cheek.
And it clicks, the pieces falling into place. You know about his father, about how difficult he is. How Billy hates him, and now you know why. Neil did that.
“Wait!” You shout, running to the window and standing in his way. “Wait. What's that on your cheek?”
“Do you even care?” He furrows his eyebrows, moving closer. “Get out of the way, I'm leaving.”
“No!” When he moves to push you away, you hold both his arms, forcing him to stop and look at you. “Billy, please.”
“I don't-”
“Please.” You see it in his eyes, the pain. And it breaks your heart. “Please, B, stay.”
His face changes, it... Drops. The fury is replaced by something far softer. “I'm sorry. I shouldn't have come here like this, shouldn't scare you like this, I just...”
“It's alright.” You mutter, taking a better look at the bruise. “Let me get some ice, ok? Then we can talk.”
“Ok.”
“But please, don't leave.” You beg, a hand caressing his chin.
“I won't,” Billy promises and you nod, quickly moving.
Your mind is racing, and your heart is beating fast as you rush downstairs. As fast as you can, you search for a bowl, putting all the ice you have in it and grabbing a dishcloth before going back to your room. You're relieved to find Billy seated on the edge of your bed. Breathing out, you sit next to him, putting some cubes in the dishcloth and making an improvised ice bag.
“Can I?” You ask in a low voice and he nods. Gently, you put the ice on his bruise, trying not to hurt him. Billy's eyes don't leave you, but you try to focus on your task. “Did you get into a fight at the party?” You know the answer, but still, you have to ask.
“No.”
“It was Neil, wasn't it?” There's anger in your voice, and you don't want to dissimulate anymore. Billy nods, looking away from you. “I'm so sorry, B. I really wish I could do something for you, I-”
“You're doing enough.” He says, placing his hand on top of yours. His touch is warm, and part of you wants to shield him from all that. To protect him.
“How?” You whisper, now completely drowning in the blue of his eyes. Billy was never this close, and now you can feel the power he has over you.
“By just being here.” He whispers back, moving even closer.
Sighing, you take the ice off his face, throwing it in the bowl. “I didn't mean to send you away like that, I just... Got scared and thought you came here with other ideas in your head.”
“I just needed to see you. I was going to that stupid party but I found myself driving here instead.” His voice is barely a whisper, but you can hear it clearly because of the silence surrounding you.
“You can go if you want, and then come back here.” You decide to say, but you don't want him to go.
You don't want Billy to go. You want to hold him, close to your chest, until all the sadness leaves his heart.
“I don't wanna be anywhere else,” Billy says, and you close your eyes before wrapping your arms around his neck.
It's a strange sensation, and it takes a while until you even understand what you're doing. But it feels right, even better when he embraces you too, strong arms pulling you closer to his body. “I'm so sorry, B.”
Billy sighs, and you feel his breath on your neck when he does, tickling you a little. But holding him feels good. And being held by him is even better. You never thought you'd feel this way, not with him. But there's nothing else right now. No age, no bad boy reputation. Just Billy, in your arms, and you in his.
Silently, you pull away, taking the bowl and placing it on the nightstand before going to the door. “What are you doing?” He asks in a low voice.
“Turning the lights off so we can sleep.” You simply say before cutting the lights and going back to bed.
“Should I go?” Billy sounds... Vulnerable. And it's obvious that he doesn't show this side of him very often. So you feel honored to see this part of him.
“No.” Lying down, you move to the side. It's a double bed, so you're used to sleeping in the middle. “Won't Neil be angry if you don't go back home?”
“He doesn't care.”
“Then stay.” It doesn't take much time until he moves. Billy takes his shoes and leather jacket off before settling down on the right side of the bed.
Then, you fall silent. You're facing away from him, eyes open. And for some reason you know he's awake too.
“Could you come here?” He suddenly asks, his deep voice filling the room.
“What for?”
“Just come.”
Don't overthink it, you tell yourself. So you take a deep breath before moving, turning to face him and moving closer. And it happens naturally as if you've done it many times before. Billy pulls you until your head is on his chest, his arm around your waist. You're blushing, butterflies flying all around.
But this is peaceful. Calming. His breathing and heartbeat feel like a beautiful lullaby.
“Why did he hit you?” With a hand flat on his chest, you smile to feel the warmth irradiating from his skin.
“Max went out with the kids. I was supposed to go for her but she went back home earlier by herself.” His voice is low, a hand caressing your hair.
“You know this isn't her fault, right?”
“I know.” He sighs.
“Just a little while now. Soon enough High School will be over and you'll be free from Neil. And this town. And whatever else you want to be free from.” Taking a deep breath, you involuntary snuggle closer to him. Billy is warm. And you never had anyone to keep you warm during the night. To hold you.
“I know.” He breaths out. “Thank you, (Y/N).”
“For what?”
“For this.”
Biting your lip, you feel heat spreading through your cheeks. “I'm... I'm glad you came.”
“Really?”
“Mhmm.” Mumbling, you hold back a yawl. “It's a cold tonight and now I don't need so many blankets.”
“Oh, I see.” Billy pulls you closer, pressing you against his body. “A very good reason.”
Giggling, you caress his chest. “Let's get some sleep, Billy Hargrove.”
And you drift off to sleep, surrounded by a sensation you never felt before. Maybe this is a mistake. Maybe having Billy this close will end up in heartbreak. But right now, knowing he's alright after what we went through, is enough. You're happy for him. Even though it may hurt you later.
•••
When Billy wakes up, he can't believe what he feels. It's good, so damn good he wonders if he died on the road yesterday, crashed his car, and somehow went to Heaven.
He's so used to being surrounded by hate, anger, and all of those dark feelings from the moment he opens his eyes that this feels surreal.
During the night they moved a bit, and now they're face to face, sleeping way too tangled up for two friends just sharing a bed. The soft morning light makes her even more beautiful, if that's even possible. Billy looks at her as if she's an illusion, a dream, that will vanish if he moves too much. So, holding his breath, he only caresses her cheek, her warm skin. It startles him a little when a quick, small smile crosses her face. He wonders what she's dreaming of. Whatever it is, it's probably good.
Billy didn't want to fall in love. Ever. He didn't even want to like some girl. Or have someone in his mind that he couldn't shake away. He likes his freedom, he likes having someone new every week. A different face to hang out with, to sleep with. He's a man who has everything figured out. His feelings and wishes, his plans for the future. And not falling in love, ever, was a very important part of his plan.
What he doesn't want to admit is that one of the reasons for that, maybe the strongest reason, is because he fears he'll become like his father. His mother loved Neil, and he broke her heart. So Billy always thought it would be better to keep girls at a distance, only having one-night stands with those who are looking for the same quick relationship.
Billy Hargrove doesn't want to be another Neil.
But, right now, looking at her sleepy face, hair covering half of it before he pushes it away, Billy has an epiphany. It happens slowly at first, then all of a sudden.
He wants a girl after all. Even worse, he wants (Y/N), for more than just one night. Or one day. Or one week. He wants to get to know her, all of her.
And he also figures out he could never be like Neil. Not to (Y/N). For her, Billy wants to be more than a crazy teenager going to parties, staying up late for stupid reasons, and not giving a damn about school. For her, Billy wants to be a man.
It's not (Y/N)'s age that stands between them. It's Billy's maturity. Or the lack of it. It's not that he doesn't have plans for the future. Billy wants to go back home, become a Marine Biologist and find a good job, one he loves, in the place he loves. But he also knows some of his attitudes aren't... Appealing to her, as they are to other girls. They like the bad boy act he puts on, and he's quite good at it since all it takes is to express the rage he has trapped inside him.
But now, he wants her. And being the bad boy isn't enough.
He never thought he'd ever change for a girl. But Billy knows this isn't just about changing who he is, because if (Y/N) didn't like him, she wouldn't be here, in his arms. This is about growing up. And Billy would have to do that sooner or later. He was waiting until he finished High School, or until he finished college, if he ever gets there. But until then, he would party hard, live like there was no tomorrow, no consequences.
But now, there's her. And for her, and her only, he wants to make things different.
Billy Hargrove is falling in love. Fast, and hard. For a guy with his reputation, it couldn't be any different.
He, who stole many hearts, had his stolen. And there's nothing he could do now. It was in her possession, and so it would remain.

The Heart and the Mind
Billy's mind is a chaotic place. But this time is for a whole different reason. It's been a while since he got together with a girl, and he doesn't even miss it. He did think about it more than a few times, but every time he considers it... All he can think about is her.
“Billy!” Max suddenly yells, snapping him out of his thoughts. With an angry face, he glances at her.
“What the hell, shitface?”
“What's wrong with you? Why are you acting so weird?” Max asks, and he rolls his eyes, focusing on the road.
“I'm normal.” Shrugging his shoulders, Billy checks his face through the review mirror. There's nothing wrong with him.
“No, you're not. You're more stupid than usual. And less angry.” She goes on, and Billy runs a hand through his head before hanging an arm on the open window. “It looks like you have something in your head.”
“Max, shut the hell up.” He mutters, taking a deep breath. “Care about your own business and leave me alone.”
“Fine, whatever.” She mumbles.
He was just about to lash out at her again when he remembers what (Y/N) said. Billy was never too fond of Max, and he doesn't want her to be one more thing he has to care about. But they were both forced into each other's lives, and she also has to deal with Neil. Of course, she doesn't see the worst side of him, since she's Susan's daughter. But part of Billy, a tiny little part is happy she's not the one being beaten up. Thinking about it now, imagining Neil hitting Max, makes him angry. Furious.
“What about that shitty boyfriend you have?” He asks, eyes on the road.
“What about him?”
“Damn it, Maxine. Is he treating you ok? Because if he ever does anything I'll have to end his miserable life.” He's finally at the Elementary School, stopping the car. “We're family now, it doesn't matter how we feel about it, so if anyone screws up with you, it's my business too.”
“You're going crazy.” She mumbles before opening the door.
“Maybe I am.” He whispers to himself, ignoring how she pushes the door close.
Driving fast, he makes his way to Hawking High School for more endless hours of bullshit. Billy can't take this anymore, not here at least. He was never into school, but back in Cali, at least he was home, in a place he loved. But here, he has nothing.
Nothing but a girl stuck in his head. A girl whose smile is burned in his memory, that he plays back all the time. Billy acts like he doesn't have a heart, but (Y/N) certainly makes him feel as if it's beating again. Maybe for the first time in his life.
—————
You've been quite off the whole morning, not paying attention to anything. Lucky for you, today's class is just about the presentations of last month's projects, and since your group was the first one, you had the privilege of sitting in the back and letting your mind float away from this place.
The thing you don't want to think about is the only thing you think about. Or better said, the person.
Billy has been going through your mind on a daily basis, ever since you last met him when you went to the quarry. You did cross paths with him at school, and he was nice, asking how your day was. With kind eyes and a beautiful smile.
And now, the man has been constantly in your head. Night and day, even though you've been struggling not to. And you like thinking about him. You even miss him, looking down at you with those blue eyes.
“(Y/N),” Tanya calls, and you snap out of your thoughts, noticing that the class is over. “Where are you? You didn't even pay attention to the project's presentation.”
“Yeah, I...” Gathering your stuff, you follow Tanya outside. “I was just thinking.”
“About what?”
“Nevermind, Tany. It's stupid.”
“Well–”
“How is my beautiful girlfriend doing?” The voice is quickly followed by a sudden hug. Liam has one arm around Tanya and the other around your shoulders. He kisses her before placing a kiss on your cheek. “And my beautiful bestie?” You wrinkle your noise at his word and the high pitched voice he usually uses.
“Your bestie has a boy in her head.” Tanya singsongs, and you roll your eyes. “I have to go to the restroom. Be right back.” Kissing Liam again, she waves at you and walks away.
“So you finally met someone you're interested in?” Liam asks as you move to one of the wooden benches set near the walls.
“Let's sit there.”
The wind is stronger than earlier today, making the tree's branches bend over. The campus is beautiful, and as you sit down, pulling your legs up, you watch as people come and go. The exposed skin of your shoulders makes you feel cold, but you ignore it. You like it here, it's far better than the one in Indianapolis. There's more nature, and the campus is full of trees and bushes, and even a garden on the East side. Things move slower here in Hawkings, but you like it.
“So? Who's this guy?”
“Liam, I need a guy's opinion on something.” Crossing your legs, you turn towards him.
“Bring it on.”
“How would you feel if Tanya was older than you?”
Liam furrows his eyebrows, getting a thoughtful expression for a while. He seems quite surprised by your question. “Well, if was still Tanya, I'd fall for her anyway.” He says, nodding to himself. “I mean, the dynamic would be different. Let's say that by her age she could have children or even an ex-husband. And the years of experience would probably make a gap in between us and if we're from different generations we'd like different things but–”
“Children and ex-husband?” You cut him off, not able to follow up with whatever he's saying.
“Yeah. The probabilities are that she'd at least have one past long-term relationship.”
Closing your eyes for a few seconds to gather your thoughts, you take a deep breath. “Liam, let me rephrase that. What if Tanya was, let's say... Five years older than you?” That's way too specific. “Would you still like her? Or even consider dating her?”
Liam gives you a look, raising one eyebrow. “Here I am, analyzing every aspect and challenge of a relationship with an age gap and you were speaking about five years?” You silently nod. “That's not even a gap. That's just a couple of years, no big deal.”
“It's just that... When the guy is older everyone finds it hot.” You start, looking down at your hands. You shouldn't even be talking about this, since Billy Hargrove isn't even a possibility. But this is just something you need to know, something you need someone else's opinion on. And Liam, being a guy, gives you a better perspective. “But when it's the other way around... People find it weird.”
“(Y/N), age is just a number.” He's still speaking when Tanya comes back, sitting next to him. “Correction. After eighteen, age is just a number. You're both adults and it doesn't matter what people say, only what you feel. And you don't even look your age, people wouldn't even spot the age difference.”
“What makes you think I'm talking about me?” You're quick to defend yourself, stuttering a little.
“Because you were way too specific for this to be a hypothetical situation or about someone else.” Liam exchanges a look with Tanya, who smiles.
“You know you don't have to hide things from us.” She says, reaching out a hand, which you hold. “We're here to help and support you. And if something happens between you and Billy we'll be happy for–”
“Nothing will happen.” Cutting her off, you sigh. “I just needed Liam's opinion on it. I was curious, that's all.”
“Look, the only problem I see with you getting into a relationship with Billy is his reputation.” Tanya starts, and Liam nods. They don't have much contact with Billy, but, like everyone who lives in Hawkins, they heard about him. “He's a bad boy, gets all the girls he wants, and throws them away when he's done. You're not into that kind of thing.”
“You're a hopeless romantic,” Liam adds.
“Exactly. So be careful.”
“I will.” You whisper, running a hand through your hair.
After another class, Tanya drives you to Hawkins High School where you attend this girl, Clarissa. A quick rain came and passed during the time you were with her in the classroom. But by the time you're done, the sun is trying to win over the thick, grey clouds taking over.
You're walking through the halls next to Clarissa, chatting. She's kind, and despite not being that good at Biology, you can see she's trying her best. “I'm way too nervous for this test. I need at least a C.”
“You'll do fine. I can make you a quiz if you want, to help you go over the topics again.” You offer as you move outside, the cold wind making you shiver.
“That would be amazing, thanks!” She cheers, giving you a quick hug before waving and heading to her car.
You go to the public phones since you need Tanya to pick you up. But after calling twice, you're almost giving up.
“Hey.” The sound makes you turn around, putting the phone back in place. Billy smiles, and you can't help but do the same.
“Hi.” You shyly say. “How have you been?” Talking to Billy is different now. You have ideas in your head, ideas you know you shouldn't have. “What are you doing here so late?”
“Basketball game.”
“Did your team win?”
“Of course.”
“That's great.” Taking the phone again, you try calling one more time. But she doesn't answer. “Shit.”
“Something wrong?”
“No, it's just–” Putting the phone back, you start walking, bracing yourself. “–Tanya was supposed to come for me but her telephone must be broken again.”
“Here,” Billy says, and when you look at him, you find the guy taking off his jacket.
“No, you don't have to–” He's already handing it over to you. “I'm alright, really.”
He doesn't say anything, and when it takes too long for you to move, Billy puts the jacket around your shoulders. You're immediately surrounded by warmth, and also his scent. It's familiar now, even though you don't spend too much time around him. But it makes you feel... Odd. In a good way.
“Thanks.” You whisper, stepping back and clearing your throat. “I gotta go now. Before the rain catches me.” With a little wave, you start walking again.
But Billy is quick to grab your arm, gently. “Do you really think I'll let you walk home with a storm coming?” As if to make his point clear, a distant thunder echoes.
“Billy...” You don't want to go with him. Being around Billy is dangerous, it brings out feelings you don't understand. Feelings you don't want to think about.
“(Y/N), C'mon. It's just a ride home.” The grip on your arm slips until he's holding your hand. It sends some kind of wave through your arm, like electricity.
You're moving before you notice, following him.
“Hey, Billy boy!” Someone shouts, and you give the guy a quick look before going for the passenger door. “Saturday at my place! It's gonna be wild, don't forget.”
“I won't.” He answers as you get inside, putting the seatbelt on. Billy is quick to settle down, turning the ignition. “Party on Saturday. Wanna come?”
“I can't. My group will come to my place to work on some papers.”
“Is it true or you just don't wanna go out with me?” Billy hits the street, and you struggle to deal with the anxiety. But it doesn't take much until you notice the... Normal speed. A lot different from last time.
“It's true.” You simply say, feeling yourself relaxing.
“So... Does that means you'd go out with me some other time?” Billy glances at you, and you feel your cheeks blushing.
You're supposed to say no immediately, make it clear this is just a ride home. That you're just... Friends. But why didn't the words come out? It would be so much easier... “Billy, you know we-”
“Mhmm, the age thing.” He cuts you off, a smirk in his voice. “Why don't you do the most simple thing?”
“Which is?”
“Ask if I care about it.” He's already staring when you look at him.
“Eyes on the road.” You warn him, and he smiles before complying. It's getting hard to deal with all this. Billy doesn't get out of your head, and you were hoping whatever this is, it would fade away. That time would help. But here you are again, with him, and all the walls separating between you are crumbling down... And you like it. You want to take them all down. But you are a thinker, and you're scared. None of the guys you were interested in before made you feel this way. But why now? Why Billy?
You just want to get home and stay the hell away from him and all the feelings he causes.
“Alright, Princess.” He sighs.
“Don't call me that.”
“Why not?”
“Well, do you?” You burst out, almost involuntary. Your heart and mind are at war, and both want to win.
Billy smiles, slowing down for the red light until he stops completely. Then, he looks at you, those blue eyes almost hypnotizing you. They're powerful... Or are you the one who's too weak?
“You're the only girl I ever met that I really want to know.” He says, voice low and deep, sending shivers down your spine. “So no. I don't give a damn about your age, Princess.”
You're frozen, still looking at him when someone blasts the horn, and you snap out, seeing that the light is green. “Some other time then... Maybe.” You whisper, clearing your throat and running a hand through your hair.
Your heart is beating fast, cheerful to know how he feels about it. But your mind... It tells you otherwise.

Walls Falling Down
You stand on the sidewalk, the sunlight chasing away the cold brought by the freezing morning wind. Part of you wanted to find an excuse, but the other part knows it's better this way. Once Billy sees you're not... Compatible... He'll let it go and all this nonsense will be over.
You hear his car before you see it, speeding through the street. He stops right next to you, and you take a deep breath before getting into the passenger seat. “Hey.” You mutter, looking at the backseat and smiling at the three kids. “Hello. I'm (Y/N).”
“I'm Maxine, Billy's stepsister.” The redhead girl says, gesturing at the smiley kid on her left. “This is Dustin, and this one is Lucas, my boyfriend.” At that, Billy scoffs.
“Nice to meet you, guys.”
“Why are you going with us?” Dustin asks as Billy starts driving. Fixing yourself on the seat, you buckle up.
“Billy invited me. And since I'm new in town I thought it'd be nice to see the quarry. Heard people talking about it.” As you speak, you notice how fast Billy drives.
“Ok but... With Billy?”
“Dustin, shut up!” Lucas whisper-yells, and you hear what could only be someone slapping someone.
“I was...” When Billy hits the road, he goes even faster. But you can't just tell him to slow down, so you close your eyes, running a hand through your hair and trying to resume your train of thought. “I was helping him at school and he invited me.”
“Oh, are you one of the tutors?” Lucas asks and you nod. “Cool. What do you teach?”
You barely hear the question, looking at the road ahead. Feeling a little dizzy and breathing deeply, closing your hands into fists. “Biology, I'm... I'm coursing Veterinarian Medicine at the Indianapolis University.” Your heart is drumming in your ears as you try to push back the panic, and the memories. “I just transferred to the new campus here in Hawkins.”
“That's so cool. I could be a vet too.” Dustin says, and you hear the smile in his voice.
“You alright?” Billy suddenly asks, and you quickly nod, not looking at him. “Ok.” He mutters, and you feel the car slowing down. Your heart slows down, and you release a breath you didn't know you were holding.
The rest of the way is filled with the kid's questions. They're into science, this much you know, and they liked that you're in that area too, mostly because you want to specialize in the laboratory field, with the research. It doesn't take much until you reach the quarry. There's another car there, with the rest of the kids, and Max, Dustin, and Lucas run to join them.
Max introduces you to the others, and also to Jonathan, the second driver, Will's brother. They all get along with their stuff, taking whatever they brought into the woods. Billy doesn't seem like he'll follow them, so you two stay alone near the cars, and you rest against the Camaro's hood next to Billy.
“You got nervous on the road.” He says, getting your attention. “You were in a car accident, weren't you?”
How did he get there so fast? “What gave it away?”
“You got pale, clenched your fists, and started bouncing your leg.” He says, and when you look at him, you find him already staring. “Was it how you got that scar above your lip?”
Billy was paying attention. “Yes.” Touching your lip, you caress the skin. The scar is small, a tone lighter than your skin. “I was twelve. My uncle was driving, and to impress my little brother he was going very, very fast. My grandma was there too, asking him to slow down but he didn't listen.” Taking a deep breath, you lightly shake your head. “There was something wrong with the breaks so he hit a tree. It was... Bad, very bad, and... I got this and a nasty cut above my right knee but... My grandma died on the impact and my little brother didn't resist the wounds.” Your voice is lower now, barely a whisper. Wiping off a stubborn tear that rolled down, you look up at him again.
“I'm so sorry, (Y/N).” Billy sounds honest, with no trace of that bad boy act he puts on most of the time. He seems... Sad even. “I didn't mean to bring sad memories.”
“It's alright... It's just part of who I am, I guess.” Moving away from the car, you cross your arms, taking in the woods and the quarry, the water reflecting the light blue shade of the clear sky. “It took me some time to even start driving. Didn't get my license until I was eighteen and I'm super careful with everything.”
“My mother left.” He suddenly says, and you both start moving, getting closer to the water.
“Why?” Billy doesn't say anything for a while, and you know you shouldn't have asked. “You don't have to answer.”
“Neil is a freaking nightmare. So she couldn't stand it anymore and left.” There's pain in his voice, and you curse yourself for asking. “Guess that's part of who I am too.”
Touching his arm, you give him a small, sad smile when he looks at you. “I see you have a complicated past too. Sorry.”
Billy's eyes are calming, like the quarry. And blue as the sky. You have to raise your head a little to look at him. “We both have a troubled path. One less thing barrier between us.”
Giggling, you roll your eyes, setting in motion again, walking near the water. Despite not wanting to go back to that subject, you're glad to leave the sad memories behind. “Well, there's one barrier you can't take down.”
“The age.” He sighs, giving you a glance. “What's your problem with the age? You're older but I'm taller.” To prove his point, he moves to stand before you, forcing you to stop. “Just in case you haven't noticed.”
Of course, you noticed. But this time he stands closer, his chest almost touching yours. So you step back, biting your lip and looking down. “Yeah, you're tall. I got that.”
“So what's the deal with the age? Are you into older guys or something like that?” He starts walking backward, just a few steps until he's walking beside you again.
“No, that's not it.”
“Then what?”
Too many questions you don't want to answer. “It's a small town, Billy. People talk and I don't want them talking about me.”
“Oh, yeah. You overthink.” He chuckles, lightly elbowing your arm. “To hell with what people may or may not say. This isn't about them, it's about us.”
“There isn't-” You're cut short when your foot slips, making you lose your balance for a moment, and if it wasn't for Billy's strong arms, you'd have fallen. “Whoa.” You gasp, holding on to his biceps.
“Careful, Princess.” He says with a smile, and, blushing, you clear your throat and step back, straightening your clothes.
“Thanks.” Catching your breath, you start walking again, back to where the cars are parked.
“See that over there?” Billy gestures at the other side of the quarry, and you spot a cliff. “If gives an amazing sight of everything. Wanna go there?”
Giving him a glance, you think about it. The places on your skin he just touched you are burning, and you wonder if that's just your mind playing tricks on you. This can't happen. This... Just isn't possible. Not for you. Billy is eighteen. Too young for you. If you were a bit younger, or him a bit older, maybe you could give it a try. But life is what it is, and there are things you can't change.
“Just so you can see it.” He speaks, and you notice you didn't answer him. “You don't have to make a big deal out of it. We'll be just two regular people hanging out.”
Sighing, you nod, following him to his Camaro. There's no need to turn this into something big. No need to see what doesn't exist. You know guys like Billy. They get tired soon after they see they can't get what they want. And since you won't give that to him, you know he'll get bored eventually, so there's no harm in going with him to a cliff.
Don't make a big deal out of small things, you tell yourself.
And Billy was right. The view is amazing. From up here, the quarry seems to be the most perfect shade of blue, and the woods are a perfect frame for it. You can see the kids down there, and you wave at them. Getting as close to the cliff as you can, you look down. It would be a hell of a fall.
“Damn, that's high.” You say, bending over a little.
“Yeah, don't do that.” Billy pulls you by the arm, making you give a few steps back. “What do you think?”
“It's beautiful.” Smiling, you look around, breathing in. “I've lived in Portland my whole life, so this is an amazing change.”
“Big city girl, huh?”
“Definitely. But I'm adapting well.”
“Why the hell did you come to this dipshit place?” Billy asks, and by the tone of his voice, you can tell he has no love for the town.
“My grandmother lived here.” The moment you say it, his face changes.
“You don't have to tell me.” He assures you, an apologetic look on his face.
“It's alright.” Walking back to his car, you lean against the door. “She always told me she'd bring me here one day, to know the town she grew up in. But that never happened so I wanted to come. When I found out that Indianapolis University was building a campus here, I decided to do this. So the moment my course started on the new campus I transferred.”
“You plan to live here? After college?”
“I don't know. The plan so far is to live here while studying. After... Not sure yet.” You find a big, flat rock on your left, walking there and sitting on it. From here, you can see the cliff, and part of the water down there. “You?”
“The moment I finish High School I'll drive back to California.”
“Oh, you're from Cali.” Crossing your legs, you look at him with a smile. Billy stands next to you since the rock isn't big enough for both of you. “Did you live near the beach? I always wanted to live near the beach. I think I'd go every day, it doesn't matter the weather. Just to look at the ocean.”
“Yes, I did.” There's a smile on his lips, the type of smile that tells you a story by itself. California is his home, and he can't wait to return. “It's beautiful. We wake up and go to sleep with the smell of salty water. The summers are very hot, so the beaches are full of people until late at night.”
Hearing him say these things makes you feel like you're there. “It sounds amazing. But why did you come here? California and Hawkins are completely different.”
“Neil's new wife.” He sighs, and you can feel the anger irradiating from him.
Grabbing his forearm, you offer him a small smile when he looks down at you. For some reason, you don't like to see him sad. Well, you don't like to see anyone sad, but this time is different. There's another feeling on top of that, which will remain unnamed since you don't know what it is. “What matters is that you'll go back.”
“I guess you're right.”
“My brother would like to live near the ocean. He wanted to work with whales and dolphins so I think he'd love to live in California.”
“What was his name?”
“James.” You say with a smile. “He was a nice kid. The moment he was born, he was my baby.” Chuckling to remember him, you look down at your hands. “I wasn't a very responsible child, but with him, I was almost an adult.”
“Why do I have the feeling you want to have kids one day?”
Biting your lip, you nod, getting up and gesturing at the bottom of the quarry. “And speaking about that, we should get back to them.”
“As you wish.” Billy starts moving to the car, and you're quick to follow.
You can't help but notice he drives much slower than before. Maybe it's just a kindness after you two shared part of your lives.
The rest of the morning goes by slowly. You and Billy chat more, watching the kids. It's almost midday when they're done, and Billy drives you home after dropping Dustin and Lucas off.
You leave the car after waving at him and Max, but when you're halfway to the front door, you notice him following you.
“What?” You ask, resuming your walking and stopping by the door.
“Nothing.” He shrugs his shoulders. “Just wanted to say that I had a nice time. At daylight. Even though the kids were involved.”
“We just spoke about sad things.” Playing with your keys, you mutter.
“Yeah. I never spoke about my mother with anyone. Ever.” Billy gets serious, so you look up at him. He really meant what he said.
“It took me years to speak about the accident. About grandma or Jimmy.” Sighing, you put a strand of hair behind your ear. “I couldn't even think about it. Couldn't get inside a car, couldn't see anything that reminded me of them, and, well, everything reminded me of them. Mostly Jimmy because he lived with me, so... I don't even know why I'm telling you all this. It just feels like–”
“Like we can share our pain with each other because we both know exactly how it feels to lose someone?”
Weakly, you nod. You never thought Billy Hargrove could be this... Deep. He comes out as an angry guy, who hates everything and everyone, getting all the girls he can just to show he can. But there's another side of him, more... Human. “Yeah. I....” You gesture at the door. “I gotta go. I have paperwork to finish today and I'll go out with some friends tonight, so...”
“Have fun. But don't do anything too crazy.”
“I won't be with you, so nothing crazy will happen, Hargrove.” Giggling, you take a look at the Camaro, finding a very curious Max looking at you. “We're being watched.”
“That little piece of shit.”
“Hey!” You immediately snap. “Don't say that about your sister.”
“She's not my sister.” He justifies, looking back at you.
“It doesn't matter. She's your sister now and it's your job to take care of her.”
“My job?”
“Yup.” Nodding, you unlock and push the door open. “See you around, Billy.” With a smile and a wave, you close the door.
Being finally out of his sight, where these blue eyes can't find you is good. But weird. You also had a good time, and you weren't expecting that.
The truth is you were expecting him to act like a teenager, rude and superficial, and you were waiting for the right time to talk him out of... This. But the time never came. Actually, you completely forgot that was your plan in the first place.
“Dear God, what's going on with me?” Breathing out, you go for your phone, dialing Tanya's number.
“Hello?”
“Hey, Tany. It's (Y/N).” You say, leaning against the wall. “Think you can come over a little earlier? I need to talk.”

The Stupid Game
“He failed on purpose!” You burst out the moment you reach Tanya's table, dropping your bag on the empty chair next to you and sitting down across from her. The couple on a nearby table turns a little to look at you. “Can you believe it?”
Tanya puts her cup down, raising both hands at you. “It's barely ten in the morning. Slow down and explain to me what happened.”
“Billy Hargrove.” Showing off the papers, you speak his name slowly as if it explained everything. “We had five meetings scheduled, then a quiz, and if he went well, he wouldn't need me anymore. But he failed. On purpose.” You're perplexed, furious even. After all the time you spent helping him, the guy does this? Is he stupid or something?
“How do you know it was on purpose? And why do you have his test in the first place?”
No, you couldn't have his test, but who cares? “That's not the point! Look.” Tanya gives you a weird glance before taking the test and starting to read it. “So he marked option B on all the questions?” She shrugs. “Maybe he just thought it was the right answer.”
“Look beneath the last question.”
She passes the pages, and you know when she sees it because she raises her eyebrows. “A winky face.”
“A freaking winky face!” Throwing your hands in the air, you lean back on the chair. “What the hell is he doing? Trying to get my attention or something?”
“Why would you think that?” She hands you back the test.
“Because I think he flirted with me.” Crossing your arms, you look down for a while.
“Wait, wait, wait.” She giggles, pinching her eyebrows together. “You think? Why do you think that?”
“...Because after our last meeting, he said a lot of stupid things. And when I asked, he said he was hitting on me.” Speaking slowly, you focus on her face, waiting for a reaction. But it doesn't come. Tanya seems... Normal. Not completely shocked as you expected. “So?”
“So you think he flirted with you?”
“Look, that's not the point. Billy is the perfect bad boy, so he probably won't be into me for too long. And even so, there's a massive age difference... Anyway...” Sighing, you run a hand through your hair. “He can't do this. He can't fail on purpose and I'll rip his eye off for it.”
“Age difference?”
“Tanya, focus.”
“You said half a million things, I'm only analyzing it piece by piece.” She explains herself, quickly fixing her light brown hair in a ponytail. “What age difference?”
You love Tanya. The two of you paired up on the first day of college, and her advice is good. But that's not what you need to think about. Or not what you want to think about. But since she won't let it go until you talk about it, you decide to just be done with it. “I'm five years older than him, in case you never made the math.”
Tanya shrugs in a dismissive manner, taking another sip from her coffee. “So he's eighteen. It's completely legal.”
“Oh, my God, Tanya!” Your cheeks heat up and for some unknown reason, your heart starts beating a little faster. The last thing you wanna think about is... This. “Eighteen isn't a magical number. Just because he's eighteen it doesn't mean–”
”At eighteen we are legally considered adults. And five years isn't that much.”
“Tanya, for goodness sake, that's not the point.” With both hands on your head, you sigh.
“Look, the guy is trying to get your attention, that's obvious. He did that to get spend more time with you.” She plays with a finger, pointing at your face with a smirk on her lips. “So you gotta go and tell him how stupid this game is.” “Oh, honey, I will.”
“And tell him that he'll have to do something way better to get your attention, sister.” Tanya winks at you, and you roll your eyes. “I know you're not into quick relationships but I don't see the problem with just hanging out with a handsome guy and having fun.”
'As if I'd ever consider hanging out with a kid.” Taking your bag, you stand up. “I'll stop by the campus to retrieve a book and after that, I'll speak to Billy the idiot Hargrove.” Blowing her a kiss, you walk away.
“First of all...” She says, and you stop, turning around to look at her. “Being eighteen means he's an adult, that's a fact that you can easily check. And second, Billy definitely doesn't look like a kid. You can't deny it.”
“Yeah, I noticed. He's hot. But it doesn't change anything.” Waving at her, you decide not to think about Billy anymore. At least not until you meet him again.
•••
This time, you wait for him standing by your car. You know he has to take his sister home before coming back, so there's no reason to stay inside. And you don't want anyone else to hear what you have to say.
When you see his Camaro, you take a deep breath. He parks closer this time, taking one of the free parking spots reserved for teachers and staff. He's a rule breaker, that much you know.
“Hi, there,” Billy says with a smile, but you don't even move from your position, resting against the hood of your car.
“You failed on purpose.” You go straight to the point, handing the test over to him. “And don't even try to fool me, I'm not stupid.”
Billy takes the test from your hands, not even looking at it. “So you noticed.”
“Of course I noticed. After all the time I invested in you, I can't believe you did that. On purpose. And drew a winky face.” You raise your voice a little, hands on your hips.
“Why are you so mad? It's just a test and I know I can do better.” He shrugs his shoulders, a smirk on his face. “I just needed more time with you.”
“You failed a test so you'd spend more time with me?” Kinda sucks to know that Tanya was right. “That's the stupidest thing I've ever seen!” You're almost yelling, so you take a look around before lowering your voice and stepping closer to him. “I know guys like you don't give a shit about school, but if you keep doing that to get the attention of every girl you wanna go out with, you'll be held back and end up doing senior year all over again.”
“I only did that because I know I can recover, I'm not that stupid.” He seems a little insulted, and that's good. You need to speak some sense into his head. “And you made it clear wouldn't go out with me if I asked so I had to guarantee we'd have a bit more time.”
What the hell? Did you hear it right? Blinking a few times as your brain struggles to process what he just said, you gasp, running a hand through your hair. “Why do you even want to go out with me?” You were caught off guard again. You're not the type of girl to fall for someone's charm, not even Billy's. He is very handsome, but a guy needs more than that. And even so, there are just too many things standing in the way of any kind of... A deeper relationship with him. Out of the question. “As I said, I'm way older than you. And we're very different. I'm not into a one-time thing and I have heavy baggage...” Taking a deep breath, you throw a hand in the air. “You should put your efforts into someone your age.”
“God, you speak like you're twenty years older than me.” He scoffs, blue eyes fixed on you. Billy raises his hand, wiggling his fingers a little. “Five years, (Y/N). Stop being so dramatic over five damn years.”
“So now I'm being dramatic?” Chuckling out of nervousness, you step aside, putting some distance between the two of you. “I'm just using my head, Billy. Something you're not used to.”
“Ouch.”
“Didn't mean it like that. Ugh!” Covering your face with your hands, you put your thoughts together. “I tend to overthink, ok? Told you, huge baggage.”
“Look, you're the most beautiful girl I've ever seen. I almost had a mental breakdown the first time I saw you.”
“I know you say that to every girl, Billy.” Moving closer to your car, you wonder if you should just go. But then you remember he just got three more tutoring meetings with you because of that stupid test. So you're stuck with him anyway, for an hour.
“Would you listen first?” He snaps, and you raise an eyebrow, turning to face him again.
“Fine.” You breathe out, tired of this argument already.
“As I told you before, I don't have to compliment the girls I go out with. I just have to talk to them, set a time and place and-”
“Spare me the details, alright?” Cutting him off, you make a disgusting face, looking away from him.
“The point is, I don't have to tell them they're pretty, or hot or anything. It's just not necessary. But you... I want you to know.” Billy smiles, and you find yourself looking. Staring. Admiring... This smile is different and is genuine. And his lips are beautiful. Raising your eyes to meet his blue ones again, you blush, because you're sure he noticed where you were looking at. “And there's this... thing I feel about you. I have no idea what it is, but it's definitely something. And I wanna know what it is. As simple as that.”
You have no idea what to say. What are you supposed to answer? Where is Tanya to solve mysteries like this when you need her? “Well, I'm not going out with you.” You spit out because a date with Billy is... Out of the question. “We could hang out as friends, but not alone. And no fake <'friendly hang out'> when it's actually a double date. Nothing like that.”
Billy narrows his eyes a little and paces around. “Damn it.” He mutters under his breath.
“Sorry, but that's everything I can do. Going out as friends and... Talking, chatting, like two normal people.” You're using the word <friends> way too much.
But the question that doesn't leave your mind is: How much of what Billy said is true? And is it the same for you? Around him, you do feel a... Thing. A pull. His eyes have this electricity, but you're sure it's just because he's handsome. You're still a girl, and girls get nervous around handsome guys. That's only normal.
“That's not it.” He finally says after a while. “I heard my dipshit stepsister talking with her friends about going to the quarry on Saturday for some science stuff. The party is a small army so they won't fit all in one car, so she said something about needing another adult to drive them.”
“And?”
“I'm willing to... Offer to take her there you come with me. With us. Because we wouldn't be alone.”
“And why are you talking like this is such a great sacrifice?” Crossing your arms, you wonder if you should accept the invitation. He did come up with something really quick so that probably means he wants to go out with you. Can you assume that? Can you assume that about someone with his reputation?
“Because I don't enjoy spending my Saturday surrounded by nerds.” He sighs, jerking his head at you. “So? What do you say? Wanna babysit them with me? And whoever will drive the other half of the kids?”
You should say no. You should just end this right here, right now. But if you go, and spend some time with him, and actually talk, he'll realize sooner or later you're not what he's looking for.< If >he's even looking for something. “Fine.” You say, nodding. “Fine, Billy. Now let's get inside, we need to go through your test.”
“Actually, do you have a pen?”
Opening your bag, you quickly find one, handing it over to him. Billy uses the hood of your car as a table, quickly reading the questions and writing over them. After a couple of minutes, he gives you the paper, and, much to your surprise, he got almost everything right. “You only got four questions wrong.” “Well, I did fail on purpose. But since I got three more meetings, you better teach me something.” He gestures at the school and, biting back a smile, you start walking.
---
“Maxine,” Billy calls as soon as he gets home. He can't even believe what he did, but it's too late to take it back now. He never thought he'd do something like that, agree to stay around the stupid kids just because of a girl. When the idea popped up in his head, he was genuinely perplexed. But it was the easiest way, and he wouldn't have to make something up with someone else just to convince her to come.
“What?” She yells from her bedroom, making Billy roll his eyes.
He makes his way there, pushing the door open. “I'll drive you to the quarry on Saturday. Just leave the passenger seat free because I'm taking someone with me.”
Maxine looks at him with a stupid face on. “You're gonna do what?”
“Last time I checked you weren't deaf.” “I don't want you there. You'll ruin the mood.” She looks down at her book again, taking notes in an old notebook.
“Look, I'm not asking. I told this girl I'd drive you and your gang there, and she said she'd come. So that's what it's gonna happen, so at least pretend to be thankful.” And he leaves, straight to his room, pushing the door close with a loud thud.
Billy can't remember the last time he did something he didn't like because of a girl. Wait. He never did anything he didn't want to do because of a girl. They never deserved such an effort, so why now? What is different now?
Billy takes a shower, trying to understand what's going on. It doesn't help, and by the time he had dinner and is locked in his bedroom again, he still doesn't have an answer. The only thing he knows is that (Y/N) is constantly in his mind, ever since he first saw her. He likes her voice, her bright eyes, and her smile has this shine he has never seen before.
This girl has a magnetic field of her own, Billy thinks as he tries to sleep. And its pull is strong. It just now hits that he didn't even ask if she has a boyfriend, but if she did, she'd tell him that right away. And now, he wonders why (Y/N) doesn't have anyone. Heavy baggage, she said. Well, Billy has one of his own, a past he doesn't like to visit or talk about. So he understands.
With all these thoughts in his head, he ends up dreaming about her.

Tumblr media
Pairing: Geralt of Rivia X Reader
Word count: 1.8 K
Summary: You were on your way to Blaviken when you stumble upon a Witcher in the woods.
{The Witcher Masterlist}
Tumblr media
The miles you walked in these woods are long. These cold, terribly silent woods... Until they're not silent anymore.
A voice reaches your ears, low, deep, being carried by the wind. You're not sure exactly what makes you follow it, despite that old man's advice. Go straight to Blaviken, he said, don't stop. A pretty girl like you should avoid talking to strangers.
But you've always been a little naive, something your parents always told you while they were alive. So here you go, following the sound of his voice – because you know it's a man, another red light you ignore –, until the sound is gone. He was talking to someone, but it seems like that someone is gone.
It takes some minutes until you see a horse, and soon after you catch a glimpse of a man. With... White hair. “You're not as silent as you think you are.” He says, startling you a little.
The man has a bowl in his hand, crushing something in it. “I wasn't trying to be silent. Where's your friend?” You ask, looking around for anyone, fixing the strap of your bag over your shoulder.
He looks up at you. “No friend.”
“Then who were you talking to?” Making your way over him, you sit on the trunk, keeping some space in between the two of you.
The man has an eyebrow raised when he turns to set his gaze on you. He seems confused. “Are you some kind of creature?”
Ouch. “Uhm... No, not since the last time I checked. Why?”
“Because you're a small, beautiful young woman and you shouldn't be this easygoing. Might get you in trouble.” And he goes back to crushing herbs.
It's not the first time someone commented on your height. “I'm not sure if that was a compliment but...”
“It's an advice.”
Nodding, you look forward, sighing and fixing the skirts of your dress. The thick fabric has been keeping the cold away when it gets chilly, but you hope to find some new clothes in Blaviken. “I'm (Y/N), by the way. And I have bread and cheese. Some fruits as well to exchange for the warmth of the fire.”
“Hm.” He mutters. “Geralt.”
“You're not... Entirely human, are you?” You say, gesturing at his eyes. “Eye colors, hair... A very nice but curious medallion.”
“You're very perceptive.”
“I am.”
“I'm a Witcher.”
“Oh.” Of course, you know what a Witcher is, you heard awful tales about them. But standing right next to this one, you can tell Geralt isn't like those from the tales. “Interesting.”
“Why aren't you running or throwing something at me?” He sounds genuinely confused.
“Why would I do that? You're like... One out of a thousand men because trust me, I know how stupid it is of a woman to approach a random man in the woods. But... It doesn't look like you'll hurt me so...” Shrugging your shoulders, you put the bag down, searching for it and reaching for a smaller one, in which you keep the food.
“I talk to my horse.” Geralt suddenly says, and it takes a while for you to understand he's answering the question you made a while ago. And you understand why. People don't really like Witchers. “And don't do that anymore.”
“Do what?”
“Go on and start chatting with the next man you find in the woods. Be careful.” At that, you only nod. “I have rabbit. Going to roast it. Would be nice with some fruits.”
Smiling, you show him what you have. Grapes, blackberries, and raspberries, more than enough for both of you.
Geralt goes to fill both your canteens as you take care of the rabbit. Once it's ready, the two of you eat in silence. After, you put a blanket on the ground and lie down, looking at the top of the trees.
“Why are you going about all by yourself?” He asks, seated on the trunk and drinking more water.
“I used to live with my aunt but she suddenly decided I should marry a very cruel, disgusting man. I said no and she said I was welcome to leave if I didn't accept the marriage. And here I am.”
“Was it a smart choice?”
“Yes. The plan is to see if there's anything good for me in Blaviken. Some kind of job, a place to live... Not sure if I'll find it though, but I can manage some more traveling.”
“I hope you find a place for yourself. You're a good girl.”
“More like a woman.” You smile to correct him, and he does the same. “It's getting dark. Can I share camp with you tonight?”
“Well, you already made your bed.” Geralt gets up, takes his stuff, and sets his bed near yours. Emphasis on near. Geralt lies down ten inches away from you. “Nights are usually boring.”
“I guess you're quite used to boredom. Since, well... You did say you talk to your horse.” He chuckles, and you like the sound. “You can talk to me now. Maybe it'll be a good change.”
“It sure is.” When you feel his stare on you, you turn your head to look at him. Geralt's eyes are beautiful, and the unnatural color only adds to it. “What are you looking at?”
"I like your eyes, that's all.” And you look up again.
“Yours are nice too.”
Giggling, you roll your eyes. “Thanks.”
From that moment on, you start talking. About many things, great, small, unimportant. He's very talkative after a while, and he makes you laugh every now and then. You tell him about your life, and about the small family you were traveling with until earlier today, when you took separate ways. He's more reserved about his past but opens up about some of the monsters he killed.
At some point, you both fall asleep, and in the morning, you have to say goodbye. It makes you a little sad, so you make it quick, shaking his hand with a smile as you start walking away.
•••
When you reach Blaviken, you visit some places, at first just checking them out, seeing if there's anything you could work with. After, you go to the market to buy some new clothes.
You're walking around town, already looking for a place to spend the night when you hear a commotion. Angry voices and yelling. You're wondering if you should satiate your curiosity, mostly after you were told something happened on the market a short time after you left. But when a louder voice says something that sounds like we don't want your kind here, you have a quick guess at what kind they're talking about.
Then you're moving, walking fast, and following the voices. You quickly find a mass of people, and you have no choice but to push your way through it.
All air escapes your lungs when you see Geralt, on one knee on the ground and sword in his hand, head lowered, trying to get some protection from the rocks people are throwing at him.
“Stop!” You shout, not thinking twice before stepping inside the circle. It takes less than a second for a rock to hit you, on the left shoulder. “Stop it! What the hell are you doing? Stop!” Turning to face the crowd, you raise your hands in front of your body.
But these people are as rude as they seem, because not even a newcomer, a girl, makes them stop. Two more rocks hit you, on the thigh and your left side.
“Go away! The two of you!” A man yells, and you see a rock aimed at your head.
Before you can even think of moving away, you feel an arm embracing you from behind, lifting you, and spinning you to the other side. You hear a rock hitting the back of Geralt's shoulder.
“Let's get out of here.” He says, his chest pressed against your back.
As you move, people get out of the way, but Geralt keeps you close, protecting you. The angry faces follow as you move, and the crowd comes behind you until the gate.
Once you're out of town, the people making a human gate to keep you from coming back, Geralt's grip loosens, his hand now resting on your stomach, under the ribs.
“Why did you do that?” He asks, deep voice right on your ear. “That was very stupid.” You almost trip on a rock, because walking like that, pressed against him, is very difficult. But Geralt lifts you, quickly, setting you down soon after.
“What did you expect me to do?” You say, and he finally let go of you. But you both stop, now far enough from the town entrance, standing face to face. “I couldn't just watch and do nothing.”
“That's exactly what you should have done. Those stones were meant for me, not for you.”
“Those stones were being thrown by a bunch of assholes who misjudged you. I knew better, so I'd do it again it I have to.” Crossing your arms, you sustain his stare.
He's about to say something else when his expression changes. And you know what that is. Pain. Witchers can feel it as much as the rest of the non-mutated folk. Geralt softens, looking down before his eye meets yours again. “I was just trying to-”
“You don't have to explain it, Geralt. I've only seen a tiny, little part of you, but it's enough to know you're not the man those people think you are.”
A low, heavy sigh comes from him, eyebrows furrowing slightly above the yellow eyes. “Nobody ever did that for me. I'm not saying it wasn't stupid but-”
“No need to thank me.” Smiling, you hook your arm with his, pulling him back to where he had his camp set because you know he left his horse there. “And since I can't stay in Blaviken anymore, I might just follow you for a bit, maybe defend you from another angry mob.”
“I'll pick you up and get the hell away next time.” He says, a hint of a smile in his voice.
“You did that already. But maybe next time make sure to sweep me off my feet?” Chuckling, you look at him, finding those beautiful eyes already set on you.
“I'll make sure of it, princess.”
The name makes you blush, quickly looking away from him and suddenly having to focus a bit more on putting one foot in front of the other. “Oh, I'm not a princess, I assure you.”
“You are in this kingdom.”
“What kingdom?”
“Mine.” He simply says, and you bite your lip, heat spreading through your skin. “I'll keep you safe for as long as you need until you find a place you'd like to live.”
“...What if it takes some time?” You decide to ask because the idea of parting ways with Geralt doesn't feel very appealing.
“For as long as you need.” With that, you reach his small camp. You both get on Roach, and so the journey begins.

The Exact Opposite
The wind is cold against your skin as you move against the sea of students. It has a weird feeling to be in a High School again, even though you left it not so long ago. But still, it feels like a whole different world now.
“This school is tiny,” Tanya says, walking beside you. “Mine had three buildings and the parking lot was twice the size of this one.”
“Mine was big too.” There are a lot of eyes on both of you, but you got used to it. It's a small town, and you're both newcomers, walking inside the school while everyone is walking out. They must be curious.
“Sometimes I wonder if transferring here was a good idea.”
 “Why?”
“I'm from New York, the city that never sleeps. This town is... Way too slow for me.” You break apart to let a couple holding hands pass before going to the side again. “Indianapolis was bad already. Hawkins...” She sighs, shaking her head.
“You can always transfer back. I'll miss you, but don't let that stop you.” Linking arms with her, you smile.
 “You better do.”
Giggling, you push the school officer's door, feeling the cold air-conditioning air. You and Tanya make your way to the receptionist, an old lady who immediately looks up at you. “Good afternoon. We're here for the tutoring.”
“Good afternoon, my dears.” She greets and smiles, searching for something on her table. A couple of seconds later, she finds it. “Who's Tanya and who's (Y/N)?”
“I'm (Y/N).” You say, taking the paper she gives you.
“On these files, you have information about the students you'll be helping. Those set for today must be arriving anytime now, the classes just ended.” She smiles again. “If you need anything, I'm Mrs. Duford and I'll be here to help.”
“Thanks, Mrs. Duford,” Tanya says and you nod at her, moving to sit on the chairs placed by the wall. “You know I'm only doing this for the trip, right? Dealing with teenagers and kids isn't my thing.”
“Oh, you got some from the elementary school too?”
“Yes. But I'm rethinking it. Teenagers are bad enough and-” Someone opens the door and gets your attention. The blonde girl speaks to Mrs. Duford, who gestures at you. “Guess that's my cue?” She asks, glancing at your paper.
 “Yup. I got a boy.”
Sighing, she stands up. “Wish me luck.”
“Good luck.” You mutter and she smiles. She's not really into it, but she's smart, and the kids will benefit from her teaching.
So, left alone, you wait for your student. Ten minutes pass by, and ten more. Maybe he didn't come today or forgot the whole thing. But since you don't have anything to do today, you decide to wait a while longer.
“My dear.” Mrs. Duford calls and you look up at her. “If the student isn't here you're free to go. I will write a report that he didn't show and-” She's cut off by a guy pushing the door open. He goes straight to her desk and you look down, getting a glimpse of his jeans jacket.
“Guess I'm off then.” You tell yourself, taking your bag from the chair beside you and folding the papers in half.
“Are you my tutor?” A strong voice asks, quite rudely, as you get to your feet. Looking up, you find a man staring down at you. Did he just say something about a tutor? Is this man a student here? You were expecting a teenager, not... This.
“Yes?” It sounds like a question, and you quickly unfold the paper, reading the name. “Are you William Hargrove?”
When you look at him again, you see his expression change. It's fast, and it happens suddenly. It shifts from anger and annoyance to what seems like surprise, right before going back to annoyance.
“Just Billy.” He says, awkwardly glancing at Mrs. Duford before turning his attention back to you. “Are you really my tutor?”
“Yes, why?” Furrowing your eyebrows, you shrug your shoulders and look away. You've been staring at his eyes, light blue eyes, for a little too long.
“Nothing.” He steps back, clearing his throat. “What now?”
“They have a classroom set for us.”
Billy nods, gesturing at the door and smiling. “Lead the way, teacher.”
---
Billy had to drive like crazy, leave his dipshit sister home and drive back to school. He failed one single test. It's not like he couldn't recover from an F. He did it before, but now the school has this partnership with Indianapolis University, and he has put in it, with a lot of other students.
The truth is that Billy can't stand school anymore. When he turned 18 last year, he thought he'd take his car and go back to California. Go back home. But adult life needs a freaking High School diploma, so he had to stay.
Pushing the car door close, he walks fast inside, cursing himself, the teachers, and everyone else he can name. He can't wait for this to be over, to leave Neil behind, leave that hell of a house behind. Billy wants a life for himself, away from all these stupid, shitty people. High School is just a tiny thing compared to what he wants. Billy wants more. He wants to <be> more. But for that, he needs to graduate.
“I'm here for some tutor they assigned me.” He spits at the old woman behind the desk, the door banging loudly behind him.
“She's over there, Mr. Hargrove.” The woman says, and he follows her gesture, finding a girl on the set of chairs near the wall.
Rolling his eyes and sighing, he walks over to her. “Are you my tutor?” He spits the words, impatient, watching as she stands up, fixing the strap of the bag on her shoulder. The girl looks up, and Billy is taken aback. Of course, he was expecting some ugly nerd with a messed-up face. But this? This girl is a sight for sore eyes, and Billy Hargrove is sore from everything.
“Yes?” She asks her voice as soft as silk. She also seems a little shocked, opening her papers before raising her eyes to meet his again. “William Hargrove?”
Ugh, not Willian. He should be mad about it, but for some reason, he feels compelled to forgive her for calling him like that. “Just Billy. Are you really my tutor?” He has to be sure, just in case this is some stupid joke on him.
 “Yes. Why?”
“Nothing.” Moving away a little, Billy clears his throat. At least he'll have a pretty face to look at while he endures this. And what a face she has. Prettier than all the girls of Hawkings. “What now?”
“They have a classroom set for us.”
Just for the two of them?
The thought crosses his mind like a lightning bolt, making him hold back a smile. Maybe he could try something with her, why not? Even though she doesn't give him the feeling that she'd be down for that. The least he could do is try. So he gestures at the door, offering her a smile. “Lead the way, teacher.”
---
You enter the classroom first, quickly acknowledging the other three pairs. There's a free table in the back, far enough from the others not to bother them. “Is that table alright?” You ask him, and when he nods, you make your way there, take a seat, waiting for him to do the same.
“What's your name?” He asks just as he takes his place across from you, cupping his hands over the table and leaning forward.
“(Y/N). Nice to meet you, Will... Billy.” Correcting yourself, you smile. “Can we start?”
 “Sure.”
“Do you want to go through the test you failed? Or focus on what's coming next?”
“The past is in the past. Let's move on.”
“Alright.” Checking the papers, you read the class planner. “Immune System.” You say. “What exactly do you know about it?”
“Mmm...” Billy mumbles, and it's clear that he's not very interested in this. But you don't blame him. You weren't very excited about High School yourself, and you didn't care much about the subjects you didn't like. You're sure he'd rather be hanging out with his friends, and honestly, so would you. “Something about protecting the body from infections or sickness.”
“You're right. Do you have any books with you?” You know he doesn't since he didn't bring any bags, but you decide to ask.
“In my locker.” He jerks his head to the door. “Want me to get it for you?”
“That would be good.” Nodding, you watch as he smirks again and stands up.
 “I'll be right back.”
“You better be.” It comes out more in a joking tone and in a warning one. If Billy uses this as an excuse to leave, you don't mind. It's his future, so this is completely up to him.
But he comes back a couple of minutes later.
On the next day though, he shows up late again. And on the next one, you find him on your way out, more than thirty minutes late. Now, you have only two other meetings with him, he'll have a quiz, and if he goes well, you'll be assigned to someone else. But you think he'll do just fine because it seems like he's paying attention...
Until you noticed he wasn't. Billy was just staring, glaring at you... And you were keeping cool, ignoring it as long as he answered the questions, but today, at the last meeting, you decided to ask, mostly out of curiosity, and because you think he'll do well enough on the quiz, even if just to be free from your tutoring.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” You inquire, tapping the table with your pen.
Billy chuckles, pushing his notebook away. “Because I like looking at pretty girls.”
What the hell? You regret asking when you feel your cheeks heating up. You surely weren't expecting that. But now you know his strategy. Billy is the town's bad boy, you've heard a lot about him. And you won't fall for his games. “Is that what you usually say to make girls go out with you?”
He giggles, eyes still fixed on you. “No. I only have to ask. The answer is always yes. No need to sugarcoat it with compliments.” He sounds serious this time, leaning closer. “So when I compliment a girl, I mean it.”
“Mhmm.” You mutter, raising an eyebrow and leaning back on your chair. “I'm not your type of girl, Billy. You like them easy and pretty.”
“And you're the exact opposite.” He bursts out, closing his notebook at the same moment you close the book. Today's class is over.
“Make up your mind, Billy. You can't compliment me and then take it back.” Pushing the book over to him, you shrug your shoulders. “Say what you mean and stick to it.”
“You didn't get me.” Billy laughs, taking both the book and notebook with a hand. That's when you notice how big his hands are... But why are you even noticing that? You've seen handsome guys before... No big deal.
 “Oh, really?”
“Really.” You both stand up, and you start walking to the door as he follows you from up close. “I meant you're not easy to get like those sluts and...” He makes a pause when you cross the door, long enough to make you look at him, waiting for further explanation. Is that also part of his strategy? “And, no, you're not pretty. It didn't take more than a second to get to the conclusion that pretty isn't enough to describe you.”
“Dear God.” You exclaim, laughing. “Are you seriously doing that?” Walking side by side with him, you reach the parking lot. The setting sun casts a beautiful, warm light, that makes you wish you had a Polaroid camera with you.
 “Doing what?”
“Correct me if I'm wrong, but are you hitting on me, Billy Hargrove?” You stop by your car, turning to look at him.
“What if I am?” He gives you that smirk again, the ice-melting one. “Would you have a problem with that?”
“I'm older than you, in case you haven't noticed.” With a bright smile on your face, you state the obvious, because you know it'll send him off. Wipe this stupid idea off his head.
“How old are you? Thirty?” The sarcasm is mixed with an eye-roll, and the way he keeps staring down at you makes you feel a little anxious.
“I may be.” Stepping back you glance at your car. You just want to drive home and forget this embarrassing conversation.
“You look my age, Princess. People here thought you were a new student.” Billy chuckles, and your face starts to burn at the pet name. He probably calls everyone that, so it's plain stupid to let it sink. “But tell me, how old are you?”
“I'll be twenty-four in a couple of months.” Your voice sounds weaker now because you don't feel so triumphant anymore. But you still hope the five years it'll be enough.
“So? I'm eighteen. We're both adults.” He shrugs his shoulders, and you sigh. “If it makes you feel better, I'm closer to nineteen than I am to seventeen so...”
Taking a deep breath, you step back again, wondering what you could possibly say in a situation like this. “Look, Billy, I gotta go. I hope I helped you somehow and that you'll do better from now on.” Walking backwards, you wave at him. “Good luck and remember everything we studied.” Turning around, you get into your car, thanking God for being away from Billy.
Through the review mirror, you watch as he gets inside his car, a dark blue Camaro. You wait for a while, but he doesn't even start the car. Rolling your eyes, you decide not to think about it. Turning the ignition, you leave the parking lot and hit the streets, relieved that this is all over.

Intervention
“A what?” You ask, blinking a few times as your mind tries to process what's going on.
 “We-”
“Let me speak,” Maxine says, interrupting Steve. “I've seen what Billy's death done to you, better than anyone.” She continues. “I'm the one to hold you at night, I'm the one to hear you sobbing, to wake up when you have nightmares and wake up screaming for your brother.” Max stands up and walks over to you, taking both your hands in hers. “You have a lot of anger, and I understand why, having lived with Neil all your life. And I understand it's all coming out the wrong way since Billy was gone, but this... This has to stop, (Y/N). I love you, but this has to stop. You're hurting yourself, and hurting us.”
“And putting yourself in danger,” Hopper adds, from his place standing near the couch. “This time you escaped... I'm not sure for how long I can keep covering for you.”
“There are five stages of grief.” Eddie finally speaks, and your eyes move to him, your heart beating faster for some reason. But you're used to it now, to the sensations Eddie provokes. It only dawns now, when you look at him in the crowd your family makes, that he lights up like a beacon. Like an anchor. And you crave to hear what he has to say. “You're stuck in anger and depression. And you have to feel them, yes, but you also have to move on.”
“How?” It comes out in a whisper, broken voice and tears rolling down. It's the first time you cry in front of them since the Battle of Starcourt.
“Start by letting it out of your chest,” Susan says.
“Yeah. You never speak to us.” Nancy adds. “We don't know what's happening.”
“Can you imagine how hard it is for me to understand?” Robins speaks up, gesturing at herself. “I joined the party too late. So I never know what to do when you freak out, go to the lake, or drive around. God knows where you go. What if you die? We wouldn't even be able to find you, and I get nervous and speak way too much, and these guys are the ones forced to bear me.”
A lot of them nod, and you just don't know what to say. Shrugging, you don't even try to resist the pull that moves you towards Eddie. He immediately stands up, arms opening to welcome you into his embrace. “It's alright. You're safe here, ok? We're your family, and we love you.” That makes you pull away, looking up at him.
And that's when he kisses you.
It's just a peck on the lips, but it makes your world stop for a moment. Your eyes are set on his as your skin burns deliciously, and for a moment there's nobody else there, just you and him... That until someone clears their throat.
“Are you done?” Hopper asks, and you collapse against his chest again.
But this time, you're not hiding. “If you guys wanna know... I'll tell you...”
They all move, giving you and Eddie enough space to sit down on the couch. Here, among them, you're safe, as Eddie said. And for the first time, you will force yourself to open up. It'll hurt, you know it, you feel it already, but you'll do this. For them, and for you.
“Billy was the one to protect me from Neil.” You begin, holding Eddie's hand, fingers laced together. “When we were kids, he took many of the beatings meant to me. Because I was his baby sister, even though I'm just seventeen minutes younger. And as we grew up-” A sob comes, you cover your mouth, closing your eyes tightly to push out some tears. “As we grew up, we started defending each other. I took some beatings meant for him too, even though he didn't like it. He wanted to take it all on himself, but I didn't let him. But many times when I was so scared, he was always there and... And now... Now he's gone and I feel like that monster can show up again at any time and I'll be all alone... And he'll beat me as he did and the only one who protected me and shared this burden is gone.”
You're a crying mess when you're done, shoulders shaking under the many sobs. Eddie holds you again, and you cry against him.
“It's true...” Max says. “But I didn't know it was like that...”
“Hey,” Steve whispers, and when you look, he's crouching in front of you. “I'm sorry Billy is gone. I always knew you guys supported each other, but this... I had no idea. But you have to know that you're not alone. You have me. And Maxine, Mike, Nancy, Robin. Dustin, Hopper, Susan, Lucas, and Erica. Even the rest of us in California.” He looks up at Eddie. “And by the looks of it, you have another protector as well.”
Sniffing, you look up at Eddie, who smiles and nods. “Hell yeah. I'd punch a thousand Jasons for you, Princess.”
That makes you blush, and you hide your face again. “So, we need a plan,” Dustin says, and you hear him messing around with some papers. “Here.” He gets up and hands you a small pile of...
“What the hell?” You speak out, sitting up straight. “How... It's...” Shaking your head, the new tears rolling down making it hard to read what it says on the plane tickets, but you got the most important part. A flight to California, to the nearest airport to Lenora Hills. “You're all going?”
They nod all at the same time. “You kids do whatever you want. I'm going to win Joyce back.” Hopper mutters and you can help but giggle.
“It's only a week, between the end of the school year and the graduation,” Nancy says. “But it'll be good. For you and all of us.”
“Guys, this is expensive... You didn't have to do that for me...”
“We managed.” Steve shrugs. “And you deserve it. All of us do, it'll be fun.”
The smile comes again, and you don't know the last time you felt... Happy. For too long, you have pushed these people away. And you shouldn't have. There are no words to thank them for not leaving, even after you were mean, almost exploding in anger. “I don't deserve it... I don't deserve any of you. And I'm sorry. I just... Didn't know what to do. Where to go, or how to feel.”
“You don't have to know,” Robin says, kneeling down in front of you next to Steve. “We'll find out, together. We fought monsters together, we can deal with a very angry girl.”
That makes you giggle, and you look around. “Thank you. All of you... For not giving up on me.” The tears that follow are from happiness... From feeling found in this sea of darkness.
“Groups hug, everyone!” Dustin calls and gets up as everyone comes closer.
You're still broken and hurt, but you'll probably feel like this forever. Billy has part of you, but now, you have to learn to live without him. And live a life he'd be proud of. Be happy, because that's what he wanted for you.
°°°
The sun is blinding, even under the beach umbrella. Steve and Robin are lying in the sun, trying to get a tan. Nancy is swimming with Maxine and Erica, and the rest of them are trying to find stuff in the sand with a small metal detector.
“You two,” You call. “Reapply sunscreen. I won't wipe moisturizer on your asses if you get all burned.”
“The sun isn't on my ass, so it'll be fine,” Robin says, and Steve chuckles.
“What are you laughing at, Harrington? You're the babysitter, you'll be the one wiping moisturizer in all our asses by the end of the day.”
 “You wish.”
“Nah, I have a boyfriend to do that for me.”
“Ouch,” Robin adds. “She just shoved your single state all over your face.”
“Not for much longer...” He mutters, and you turn your head to look at him. “Nancy and I been talking...”
“Oh.” That has been going on for a while. And one of the first things that happened when you set foot in Lenora Hills, was Jonathan and Nancy breaking up. They're fine now, but the romantic relationship is over, probably for good. “Good. Remember to send me an invitation for the wedding.”
“Speaking of you, people with hopes for the future, where's Eddie with our sodas?” Robin asks, and you sit up, looking over your shoulder.
And there he comes, chatting with Eleven, each holding one side of a styrofoam box. “Finally.” You say when they reach you. “Did you get them from the factory?”
“Yup,” Eddie says, sitting on the towel next to you. “We were squeezing the lemons.” He smirks and you pull him into a kiss.
“So.” Eleven starts, sitting in the shade with you and Eddie. “After graduation, what are your plans?”
That's something you didn't stop to think. And honestly, it's the last thing you want to think about on such a beautiful beach. “Mmm... I'm not sure. I wanna skip college. Find a nice job and just start my own life.” Shrugging, you take a deep breath. “I always wanted to work in a pet shop, ever since I was a kid. Might sound like something stupid, but I'd like it.”
“It's not stupid,” Eddie says, and El nods.
“Thing is, I don't even know where. I... I wanted to go back home, to Santa Monica... But I build a strong connection with Hawkins and, as crazy as it sounds, I learned to love it. And Lenore Hills... Would be a good restart. And I already have you, Joyce, and Jonathan here so... I really don't know.”
“There's a way to know,” Eddie says, and you look at him, eyebrows furrowed. “Might be an odd way to set our future but we could always change our minds after.”
 >>>>>>>>>>The way he says <our> future has the butterflies in your stomach flying all over. “What way?” You ask, your eyes set on him.
Eddie pulls his bag closer to him and starts looking for something inside it. “Found it.” He pulls out a red, 20-sided dice.
“I'm not even surprised,” you say with a giggle.
“We could throw it. And let's say... One to six, we stay in Hawkins.” He starts, and as odd as it sounds, it makes you smile. This is so like him, and it reminds you of everything that made you fall in love with him. “Seven to 12 is Santa Monica, and thirteen to eighteen, we come here to Lenore Hills.”
 “What about nineteen and twenty?”
“You throw again.” He simply says.
Biting your lip, you look down at the dice, taking it from his hand. “Let's get closer to the water.” Getting up, you both walk towards the ocean, holding hands. “Whatever number comes up... You'd go with me?” The questions come out with a touch of fear. What if he doesn't want to leave Hawkins, and your relationship is set on where you want to go?
“Absolutely.” He says, making you breathe out in relief. “It's you and me.” When you stop, Eddie looks down at you, a hand caressing your face softy. “I mean, unless you grow tired of a Freak in your life.”
Chuckling, you shake your head. “Nah. What would I do without your freakiness all over my life, Munson?” He smiles. “So let's do this...” You say, looking at the dice.
“Let's do this... And after our graduation, our life can finally start.”
Nodding, you tiptoe, your foreheads touching. “Alright... I'll let it fall... And our future shall be set.” You put a note of drama on the last part.
“It shall be,” Eddie repeats, and as he kisses you, long, lovingly, and passionately, you let the dice fall.
Nothing matters for that moment. Hawkins, Santa Monica, Lenora Hills... It's just you and Eddie, and the kiss that you want to taste for the rest of your days. When you pull away to breathe, a smile on both your lips, you take a deep breath before looking down at the dice.
Gasping, you can't help but smile. “Well, we won't have to throw again.” He says, and you nod.
 “Our forever starts now.”

The Anti-Hero
You've been in Hopper's office for over an hour. With your head in between your hands, you're crying. Not out of guilt for what you did, but out of loneliness.
The smell of blood is thick in the air, and all the comfort you have are from the voices outside. Max, Dustin, and Steve are talking in low voices. And Eddie... Eddie was the first to get here. He's seated right next to the door, waiting for Hopper to let him in. He would be here if the door wasn't locked.
But you're in big trouble. Even with Hopper making things easier for you, this time you're in big trouble. Jason's nose is broken. His jaw was almost dislocated. It would be much worse, but you didn't have the brass knuckle with you. You're a little beaten too. There's a sting on your side from where he kicked you and a bruise near your right eye. But that's nothing compared to Jason.
When the door opens, you raise your head. Hopper closes it again, locks it, and walks around the desk to sit in front of you. He takes a deep breath. “Jason's parents will report you to the police for aggression.” He says, slow and lowly.
“And what will happen to me?” You ask, wiping the tears off.
Another deep breath. “Many students came. They want to place charges against Jason for aggression as well. Bullying. Outside the school grounds.”
Furrowing your eyebrows, you tilt your head to the side. “What does it have to do with me?”
“Twelve students already came. And I'm not counting your boyfriend and his club friends.”
“He's not my boyfriend.” You interrupt.
“They're all saying you did what you did in self-defense. And also to defend them.”
“What?”
“The students' parents are also coming. This means the charges against Jason are getting bigger than the one he has against you. And that one is sounding more and more like something made for justice's sake.”
Gasping, you run a hand through your hair. That's when you remember you have blood on your hands. “It means I won't go to jail?“
“You won't. But not because of them, because of me." He says, returning to his normal self. “You're welcome. But you can't keep doing this. You'll get in trouble. By either going to jail or being beaten up.”
“I don't–”
“I know you're angry. You have much of your brother in you, but this can't go on. You're hurting yourself, and you're hurting them.” He jerks his head to the door.
Chewing on the inside of your cheek, you give him a short nod. “Then let them in. Or let me go if I'm not arrested.”
“You can go.” You're up the moment he says that, heading to the door. “Remember, you're hurting them way more than you're yourself. yourself.”
You don't say anything, you just unlock and open the door. At the same second, their heads turn to you. Everyone is here. Swallowing hard, you fight to hold back the tears, shrugging. “What?” When your voice breaks, the tears start to escape.
But Eddie moves before anyone does, pulling you into a hug, tight and warm. There are no words to say how grateful you are. He holds you when the sobbing comes, and you hide against his chest.
“Eddie... Let her go.” Steve says in a low voice somewhere behind Eddie. “She doesn't really like...” His voice fades, but Eddie doesn't even move. “...But I might be wrong...”
“Let's get out of here, ok?” Eddie says, pulling away just enough to look down at you, his thumb wiping some tears off. Nodding, you let him pull you, an arm around your shoulders.
The memories of the rest of the day are blurry. You went home and slept with Maxine next to you. Her presence is calming, and you didn't feel so alone.
Back at school three days later, after the suspension, you were surprised to find people adoring you on a whole different level. Notes glued on your locker and slid inside it thanking you, and praising you for putting Jason in its place. People you never spoke to before, nerds and such, types of people you never had anything in common to be friends with, stopped you through the halls to say you did something good, that you had put a stop to the bullying they suffered every day. Some called you a hero, which made you laugh every time, saying that you're not way close to being one. An anti-hero then, said Dustin, with a long explanation about anti-heroes, their way and motivations, and such. Even the rest of Jason's friends are behaving, and if it's up to you, they'll keep singing this song. Or else, you'll give them a piece of what you gave to Jason.
It's a good week, despite the coming and goings to the police station. Over fifty students went already, pressing charges on Jason for things he did outside the school. Those complaining about what happened within the school is ever higher.
You're at peace now, about this issue. Hopper said that, if Mr. and Mrs. Carver decides to proceed against you, he will proceed against Jason. And the scenario for Jason would be very, very complicated, while you would escape with some hours of community service.
So that page is turned, Jason isn't going to school here anymore, and you can forget what happened.
After another night of driving around and swimming in Lover's Lake until the break of dawn, you only notice the number of cars and bikes on by your house when you get out of the car. Furrowing your eyebrows, you wonder if they're throwing a party and why it would be this early in the morning, on a Saturday.
The door is open, so you just push it and get inside. But one step in and you freeze, looking at all the faces crowded in your living room. “O...kay...” You mutter, closing the door behind you. “Did someone die?”
Nobody says anything, but Steve stands up from the couch, crossing his arms. “No, (Y/N)... This is an intervention.”
