¨I know, I know. I´m sorry, I wasn´t feeling well yesterday. I was dead out pretty much all day.¨ you said as you opened the door, cell phone smushed against your cheek and shoulder. You gave the blonde standing in front of you a quick smile and signed for him to get in. ¨Ok. I´m sending it to you tonight. Ok, bye.¨
¨Trouble?¨ Killer asked when you threw your phone on the couch, plopping down after, a heavy sigh escaping through your pout.
¨Some work things I forgot to deliver yesterday. My boss was trying to give me a hard time.¨
¨He´s a jackass?¨
¨He´s a loser.¨ you both let a short laugh out.
¨Do you need time to finish it? I don´t think Kid would mind today, he´s in a good mood.¨ Killer sounded like he was forecasting the weather for the day.
¨Nah, don´t worry about it. It´s done anyway.¨
¨But you said on the phone that you´d send it tonight.¨
¨I´m giving him a hard time.¨ you smiled. ¨I remembered when I came home last night and got it done. I was about to send him,¨ you pointed at your computer screen, with the archives waiting for one click to be sent ¨until he called, trying to give me shit for it.¨
¨If you ever do this to Kid, don´t let him find out.¨ you shared a laugh. ¨So... are you ready?¨
¨Yeah, sure.¨ you grabbed your phone from the couch and shoved it into your bag ¨But before...¨ you asked, putting yourself on your feet.
¨Uh?¨
¨Why is Kid in a good mood? I didn´t think that was possible.¨
¨Oh, that.¨ the blonde opened a discreet smile ¨His prosthetic came back today.¨
You stared at him for what felt like minutes as you tried to process his words.
¨His what?¨ you asked, head tilting to the side.
¨His prosthetic arm.¨
¨Why would Kid need a prosthetic arm?¨
This time, you were stared at for what felt like minutes by the blonde. ¨For... the arm he doesn´t have?¨
You opened and closed your mouth a few times, letting an airy sound come off from time to time ¨What are you talking about?¨ you asked with a frown.
¨What do you mean, Y/N? Kid doesn´t have his left arm.¨ Killer sounded like something you should know ¨Normally, it´s very noticeable, but he had trouble with the pieces he bought and had to send them back. He was using the old one until now.¨
Instead of continuing the debate over the existence of Kid´s arm, Killer suggested you would get going so you could see for yourself. He avoided the complicated details, but apparently, they got into a fight over territories and businesses a while back, and Kid got out not so much unscathed.
Ever since that happened, Kid has gotten rare materials from suppliers of the Underworld to make what one would consider a weakness into one of his biggest strengths. But unfortunately, he had trouble with the pieces from the last order, and the prosthetic wasn´t working as smoothly as it should, so having to send them back left him in a sour mood.
¨I could swear he had both arms. Like, he threw me over his shoulder once.¨ you got chills in your spine remembering that.
¨I mean,¨ his voice sounded muffled by the helmet ¨the old one is smaller, more... normal size? But still, I thought you had noticed.¨
¨I guess I don´t pay much attention to things outside my computer.¨
¨Yeah...¨ you missed the sliver of concern in his voice when he accelerated on the green light.
Killer explained that he would be taking you to a different place today. Instead of the bar, you would be going to Kid´s shop, where he spent most of the time when he wasn´t out dealing with business. It was further into the district, an area you had never been to before.
When you got the job and had to move out of the countryside, you knew that affording a place in the lively and green district was off the table. So you chose an apartment close to the subway station, which meant living quite far from the core of the Shadow district.
Being away from the guts of the nasty businesses kept you safe and hidden for a long time. You even believed once that it would continue that way until you had the opportunity to leave. Alas, things went down a different path.
It was difficult to imagine how the place looked at night as you drove past the empty streets. The gray and cloudy sky painted the alleyways like an old photograph. Everywhere you looked had tall buildings with neon signs turned off, and, surprisingly, it wasn´t as dirty as you imagined. It was messy but not dirty.
At this early hour, the residents of the area were shutting their windows closed, getting ready to go to bed after a long and loud night. The district looked dead, uninhabited. It looked like a ghost town from the fiction books, a city forgotten after the apocalypse.
¨Here.¨ Killer said, bringing you back from the mess of thoughts in your head.
In front of you, there was a shop with the heavy metal doors rolled down and the lights turned off. The exposed brick and burnt cement structure had posters on the walls, stains on the floor, and, as the cherry on top, a big sign that said ¨Gibson¨.
¨So... Kid owns a... musical instrument store?¨ you asked, confused.
¨No.¨ Killer´s words left his lips with an amused tone ¨But I know where you got that from. It´s an auto shop. Come, there´s an entrance at the back.¨
You followed him all the way inside the shop, and after the screeching sound of the door opening, you had a view of what it looked like inside. You immediately spotted Victoria parked in front of the main door, a small kitchen-like area, and a couch in the middle of boxes and tools. The place was quite charming, with signs, posters, and pieces of decoration arranged all over.
It looked like a place people would share beers and have fun.
Well, not that you would know.
¨Y/N.¨ Killer called you, standing close to a staircase ¨Up there.¨
Your stomach twisted in apprehension about what was to come.
How many people will be there? Will I have to talk? Will they ask me questions? Did I bring the pen drive? What´s up there?
¨Don´t worry,¨ the blonde spoke as if your thoughts were loud enough to hear ¨no one´s getting hurt today.¨ he sounded reassuring.
¨That´s very much appreciated.¨
As you reached the second floor, it almost felt like you entered a different building. It didn´t resonate with the old-school car shop aesthetic at all. Another metal door led the way towards a victorian gothic study room with carved dark teal wooden walls and an immense mahogany pedestal desk placed on the opposite side of a television screen just as big.
Between the desk and the screen, leather couches and a coffee table rested upon an expensive rug that covered the entire floor. On the corner, a bar brightened the room with chandeliers and lights that made the bottles seem ten times worthier.
Heavy curtains closed the windows and judging by the lack of wrinkles on the fabric, you assumed that they stayed closed most of the time. Still, the air was not stuffy and damp. Other than the scent of some alcoholic beverage and perfume, the room smelled like cold leather.
You had a hard time believing that someone like Eustass Kid had such a refined office. Considering the ruckus he made out of your miscellaneous back in your apartment, you pictured his office as a raging mess.
Maybe that´s the reason the shop is right underneath. It doesn´t really matter if it gets messy.
¨Here.¨ Killer´s voice was anechoic, like the walls were soundproofed, making everything extremely silent ¨Can you get the material ready?¨ he stood close to the outer side of the desk, placing a laptop on it. Believe it or not, his hair never looked more gold. ¨The guys will be here soon.¨
During your entire architectural reverie, you barely moved away from the door, unsure if you should get in or not. You never stepped into a place like that, and if you didn´t know the owner, it would almost feel like a sacred space.
¨You´re blocking the fucking way.¨ a voice snarled from behind you.
You swayed to the side, trying not to show your tiny jumpscare. Kid´s hair also seemed bloodier, and he stood taller than ever as he passed by you.
Or maybe...
Your breath hitched at the sight of the massive metal arm that the furry coat failed to hide. Perhaps, it was supposed to be shown. If the talk about his prosthetic seemed unreal before, now, seeing it so close, it felt even more unbelievable.
You walked silently towards the chair Killer placed for you to sit on and get to work. The sound of you shuffling your bag and looking for the pen drive was muffled and loud at the same time.
Their voices in the back weren´t understandable as you turned the laptop on, being watched by the bull skull on the wall, with its horns ready to turn you into meat on a stick. Your palms began to cold sweat, even under the air conditioner.
As you started fiddling with the computer, the tv screen lit up, sharing the screen you had opened. You kept setting everything while people kept coming in. From the corner of your eye, you recognized a few faces from the bar.
¨Morning, Y/N.¨ someone approached, placing a mug close to you.
¨Morning, Heat. Oh, coffee, nice!¨ he gave you a brief smile before walking away with his signature sullen look.
¨Last time I saw you, you were almost dying by your window.¨ a much taller figure entered the room, making a pit stop by where you were. ¨How you doing, Y/N?¨
¨About that... I´m doing a lot better, Wire. How´s the air up there?¨
His shoulders shook with his short laugh as he turned on his heels, leaving you to finish preparing everything. You tried your best to ignore the discomfort of being there, outnumbered. Even if, theoretically, you were all on the same side, there were many unknown and intimidating faces.
As always, you felt out of place, wishing you could crumble into microscopic particles and go home.
¨Ok, everyone here?¨ Kid spoke, stepping back to the desk ¨You ready, too?¨ he glanced at you with his amber eyes looking darker than ever.
¨As much as I can be.¨
¨Then, let´s get started. Everyone! Most of you met Y/N already. She was working on finding out who´s responsible for infesting our place with plagues, and we´re gonna take a look at that now.¨
The people on the sofas immediately stopped talking, turning their heads to look at their boss, sparing you some glances, while you avoided looking back, afraid that your hands would start trembling even more and your heart would short circuit. When Eustass Kid motioned for you to start talking, the feeling in your mouth was of someone who had eaten handfuls of sand.
¨Uhm... I-¨ you cleaned your throat ¨I could get into someone´s device... but...¨
¨Hey, you´re gonna have to talk louder than that.¨ Kid said, eyes glued to the TV screen.
You took a deep breath, pursing your lips, preparing to start over. ¨I could access the device of a man named Zhu Watt. He was on Alex´s contact list, the man who worked undercover in your gang. He, unfortunately... or, fortunately... was killed by his boss as soon as he arrived back.¨
All eyes were on the screen, where you entered images of the conversations you found on his cellphone. A wave of small comments spread all over the room, some telling how he got what he deserved, some trash-talking the boss for killing him. You waited until it was over to continue talking.
¨They exchanged brief emails containing meet ups information every month. Though they alternated the locations, they were always the same ones.¨ a map of the district popped up on the screen with pins on the areas they would meet. ¨ satellite image only shows residential complexes and old warehouses. I don´t know the district much so... I guess it´s up to you guys.
¨Avoiding surveillance cameras, huh? Not so shabby.¨ a short woman with braided pigtails spoke, chugging the beverage in her mug. There was a follow-up of questions between the others.
¨Every month? And no one got sus?¨
¨I mean, they met pretty late at night.¨
¨Ah, you know we don´t work by the conventional commercial hours.¨
¨You guys think someone covered for him?¨
¨That´s a good question.¨
¨Why don´t we have all cellphones checked, boss?¨ Another woman asked nonchalantly. From where you were sitting, you couldn´t see much of her face. Her voluminous curly hair obstructed your view along with the crown-like hat she wore with confidence.
¨Wouldn´t be productive.¨ Kid responded, fingers tapping on the desk.
¨And if there are others, they are probably acting more cautiously already.¨
¨So... everyone´s innocent until proven otherwise?¨
¨For now, yeah. We have other things to focus on.¨
During all the talk, you noticed how they spoke to each other. Though they referred to Kid as boss as a sign of respect, they talked like equals, people with whom a long journey has been shared.
There wasn´t fear in conveying thoughts, voicing out ideas, and asking questions. They all sat comfortably, not minding taking too much space or if their arms touched.
Every single person in that room talked according to their character, dressed without caring about looks, and lived with no fear of judgment. The ones tabloids warned you about, the gangs, the criminals. Why do they look like the most free of all people?
¨Can you find who sent the messages we couldn´t read?¨ Kid turned to you.
¨What do you mean?¨ someone spoke before you had the chance.
¨The messages on Alex´s phone weren´t coded. They were like an auto destructive crap.¨
¨Software.¨ you corrected.
¨Whatever.¨
¨So the other side has a tech guy as well?¨ a lanky man with eyeliner, lipstick, and a spiky helmet asked, eyes meeting yours.
¨Apparently.¨
¨So, can you?¨ he repeated.
¨I mean, it would be easier if we still had his phone, but... I guess, yeah.¨
¨Then... we´re going after this Zhu guy or...¨
¨No, not now.¨ Kid answered ¨We´ll be watching him for a while. Our goal now is to get the tech guy.¨
¨There´s only one?¨
¨Let´s hope so. For now, I guess I don´t have to say this conversation doesn't leave this room.¨
They all agreed to Kid´s words in different ways, creating a mess of voices in the room.
After a while more of talk and explanation, a big man, Gig, if you heard it right, spoke. ¨Wait, I have a question.¨
¨Go on.¨ Kid responded.
¨Why did Alex send normal ass emails to this Zhu guy but received fancy coded messages from the other guy?¨ he asked, bringing all eyes on you.
At first, you were unsure if the one supposed to answer that question was really you, but when no one said anything, you took it as your cue.
¨Uhm... I thought about that too. Maybe, they have a hierarchy system going on...¨
¨What do you mean?¨
¨Well, Alex kept in touch with some people outside your crew. Most were frugal conversations, with the exception of Zhu and the email guy. I guess Alex reported to Zhu because he also doesn´t talk directly to the boss. Look,¨ you searched for some images on the computer ¨he reported about Alex to this other person, and their response was that they´d communicate the boss. A couple of days passed, and he got killed by the boss himself. You get what I´m saying? He didn´t go directly to him.¨
Some seconds of silence took over while everyone pondered what you said. ¨Makes sense.¨ the big guy commented ¨If that´s true, it kinda narrows down our option, right?¨
¨Maybe.¨ Killer talked for the first time in the meeting ¨Y/N, do you have more faces?¨
¨Yeah.¨ you said, feeling your cheeks get hot for God knows what reason ¨These are all the images from and with his contacts.¨ a gallery full of pictures popped up.
¨Get the one on the top right for me.¨
You did as he said, and, again, no one said a thing while they analyzed the photo.
¨Doesn´t this give off Scratchmen vibes?¨ the short woman spoke, her lips turned down in aversion.
¨Hell, yeah. Disgusting son of a bitch.¨
You remained silent as they shouted insults to Scratchmen, a name you didn´t find so strange to the ear.
¨Scratchmen...¨ his name fell off your mouth louder than you intended, making once again, all heads turn to you. Under all the attention, the words died in your tongue ¨... he... uhm, no, no, keep going.¨ you waved your hand, signing for them to ignore you with a weird smile on your face.
Biting your lip with sheer force, you shoved your face as close to the computer as possible, pretending to be looking for something. Your heart bit faster than rolling drums until someone took the microphone back.
¨Scratchmen Apoo, Y/N. Do you know him?¨ Killer asked, all the other people listening to him.
If you opened your eyes a bit wider, they would most likely fall off.
¨Uh... I-I... have heard. By name only. On... the internet.¨ partially true, since you read once about an article involving him and a scandal. At the moment, however, nothing came to mind.
¨Scratchmen Apoo is the dumb fuck who basically runs the red light district of the red district. Ironic, no?¨ the lanky man, now swayed a lollipop between his fingers as he spoke.
¨By red light, you mean...¨
¨Yeah. Drugs, sex, and people. That´s what he sells.¨
¨Oh, right-¨
¨What about tracking him?¨ Kid cut you, bringing the conversation back to Zhu ¨Did you try tracking him?¨
¨Yeah, actually. But, uhm... I couldn´t really turn on the location on his phone. He has a firewall installed, and I thought it could be risky.¨
¨I thought the rat thing didn´t detect.¨
¨Normally, it doesn´t. But with an app like that constantly sweeping the phone, looking for inconsistencies, I thought I could figure out another way.¨
¨Why?¨
¨Well, nothing on his phone has permission to access location, you know. If all of a sudden, it turns on, the firewall will definitely point out something. I didn´t wanna take that risk.¨
¨So?¨
¨I kept track of his IP address all day.¨
¨IP what?¨ the big man asked, confusion contorting his features.
¨Uhm, it´s like-¨
¨Google that later, Gig.¨ Kid interrupted you again ¨Go on.¨
¨Right. Both of his devices remained under the same IP address until six thirty-four in the afternoon when he left his house. I accessed his data provider and triangulated his route until... here.¨ you circled the area on the map with the mouse cursor.
¨Can you be more specific? That´s almost ten kilometers.¨
¨No... not now.¨ you sighed ¨As I said, we can only get a rough location based on the towers.¨
¨Are there more towers in the area?¨
¨Yeah. Here.¨ you pinpointed ¨And here.¨
¨So, the border should be around... here?¨ Kid walked to the TV, using his metal arm to show you.
¨Hmm... not really. The more populated the area, the more towers they have to avoid overworking them. When we get to the center of the three towers, they end up covering the same site.¨
¨How much?¨
¨Roughly... three kilometers.¨
¨So it could be this whole part?¨ he drew a line in the air again to express what he talked about.
¨Yeah. Something in particular there?¨
¨Everything.¨ the lanky man spoke again ¨It´s one of the most sus areas around here.¨
¨Sus.¨ the mohawk guy commented, giggling after it. He had been so quiet the entire meeting you barely noticed him.
¨But adds to the Scratchmen thing. He has many businesses in this area.¨
¨Not good enough.¨ Kid´s brows furrowed.
¨If you have a bit of patience,¨ you started, trying to have as much confidence as possible ¨I can grant you access to his location at all times.¨
It seemed to work since the redhead turned to you, a spark of interest crossing his eyes. ¨What do you have in mind?¨
¨To put it in simpler words, I´ll make his firewall blind to the location, so it won´t be checking that every time the system runs.¨
¨How´s that different from this?¨ he pointed at the TV.
¨Because I won´t be using cell towers to track him. I´ll be tracking him with a satellite.¨
A heavy sigh left his body through his nose as he pondered, all eyes on him. ¨And how much patience do I need?¨
¨Tomorrow morning.¨ his amber gaze gleamed at your words.
¨Then work your magic.¨
You sat in front of the computer while Eustass assigned some tasks to some of the people. Those you met for the first time didn´t leave the room without sparing you a quick goodbye, to which you retributed with a weird wave.
¨Stop sounding so outsourced.¨ Kid grumbled, stomping closer to you.
¨What?¨
¨You´re one of us, now. It´s not your crew. It´s our crew.¨ he sighed, throwing himself on the big office chair on the opposite side of the desk.
¨I guess... you´re right?¨ the answer came out confused ¨Just give me some time to get used to it.¨
¨Whatever. Wire.¨ Kid called, and soon Wire, who sat on the couch going through his phone, made his way close to you. ¨I want you to explain to Y/N how things work around here.¨
¨What?!¨ the both of you asked in unison.
¨Sooner or later, you´re gonna have to learn how the district operates.¨
¨But... why me?¨ Wire asked, visibly not happy with his task.
¨Killer´s got things to do today, and you two get along, right?¨ you exchanged looks, asking yourselves if getting along was the best term. ¨Just basic stuff. Main names, main places, and main things to be careful of. A headstart for someone who lived under a rock for the past years.¨
¨... a headstart for someone who lived under a rock for the past years...¨ he mumbled, tapping his chin ¨got it.¨
-
¨Look, I´ve never done this before, so... if you have questions, just ask, alright?¨
¨Right.¨
The two of you sat uncomfortably on a small round iron table on the first floor of the building, where Kid and some other men got heavy work done. Between the chair that was too small for Wire and the loud clinking of metal echoing through the walls, you were trying to be compliant to get it done as fast as possible and go home.
Wire, too, made sure to be as efficient as possible, although he couldn´t get himself to stop the yawns from coming every once in a while. His explanation was brief but precise, telling you, district by district, all the things you never tried to learn.
The city was divided into five districts. All equally wealthy, but for different reasons. At eight o´clock was the Light District, the district of extravagance, fine pleasure, and splendidness with all of the daintiest restaurants, opulent hotels, and luxurious casinos.
At ten o´clock lived loudly to the ears and the eyes with its blaring music and bright neon signs, the Shadow District, home of pubs, clubs, and eclectic bars. The sanctuary for gangs and teenage rebels with their bright hair colors and flashy clothes. Your, not so humble, abode.
Moving on to twelve o´clock you´d find the Commercial District, a place for fun and joy with splendorous museums, photogenic restaurants, and sports centers, such as martial art dojos and paintball arenas, you name it, they have it. Above the rugs, any legal service would be found there.
The Justice District, at two o´clock, is, as the name says, the Home of Justice, the key to progress. Soft asphalt and buildings that always look new welcome you to the place that houses the best hospital in town, the Hiruluk Institute of Medicine and Scientific Research. Some of the best surgeons in the world are gathered in this technological and medical marvel.
Last but not least, the Noble District, at four o´clock, was a place where not everyone could just barge into. It was mostly residential, with all houses named mansions and people living a life separate from the majority. The place received direct protection from the Justice District, while also having a safe route to the Light District, avoiding the dangers from the green and red lines of the subway.
All of these divisions were connected in the center of the city by the Lucky Lake, a romantic spot where dreamful hearts would throw their coins and make wishes. The districts were connected all together with some other important places by a subway line.
That was the part you somewhat already knew. After all, those were the main advertisement for anyone thinking of moving there. What you did not know, for example, was that Kid had gotten his hand into routes hidden from everyone, even the police. That´s how he managed to maintain a strong and successful relationship with the providers of the Underworld.
Those people wouldn´t put their businesses at risk with small gangs who would most likely get caught by the police, especially after the new commissioner, Sakazuki, took over. So with Kid holding the safe entrances to those illegal materials, it became easier for them to pick a partner.
“So you guys handle everything? From getting the pieces, assembling and distributing?” you asked, taking a sip from the coffee machine Kid had in the shop. Wire hummed and pulled a pack of cigarettes, putting one between his teeth and sliding the box across the table towards you.
“Sorta. It’s less work with the guns since we pick them up at the border of the districts.”
“You get the guns from the Commercial district?” you lit the cigarette after he threw the lighter your way.
“Nope. The other one.” He blew a smoke ring, not looking entertained by it.
You stopped to think for a second. Only two districts make borders with the Shadow District. And if he wasn’t talking about the green one, then...
“What?!”
He hummed again.
“You receive the gun parts from the Light District?”
“Yeah.” he shrugged.
“But don´t they have, like, very strict security?¨ you puffed some smoke out, slowly allowing yourself to relax on the chair.
¨Our guy has a safe path too. Plus, we don´t pick´em up in broad daylight. S´why, by the way, I´m almost fucking sleeping in this chair.¨
¨Huh, you guys weren´t playing with the whole conventional work hours thing.¨ you commented, remembering what the short woman said.
¨Gotta be ready all the time. But we´ll go over this later.¨
¨So, you´re getting some sleep after this?¨ you waved your hands around as if you pointed to the situation ¨I mean, not that I have the best sleep schedule but ... you can´t really rest when you sleep during the day.¨
¨Well, you know what they say,¨ Wire adjusted his posture on the chair, reaching for his mug ¨those who escaped hell don´t complain when the sun is up at midnight.¨

Hi! I'm a reader that loved your fanfictions about Killer and the one you wrote for Kid. I don't know if you read the spoilers of the sbs 104 of one piece but I wanted to tell that you really got a point about these two and their story. Especially how they are "ride or die" for each other and the crew, and how the tried always to survive and move on from bad situations. I always felt, even in the canon story, that the was something bittersweet about their whole being and behind that violent appearence. I just wanted to thank you so much for writing them so good, I felt like your version of them was right and on character. You did an amazing work! Can't wait to read more!
I read your message a few weeks ago and I remembered how it brought me to tears of joy. So thank you for taking some time to write me this, I appreciate it, from the bottom of my heart.
I read briefly the sbs (because even neck down in the dumpster of anxiety and dog shit that is my existence, I am a simple woman. I see kid pirates, I click it). Still, I’m planning on sitting down to catch up properly asap.
I felt very anxious before posting my first fics with the boys because I wanted to feel as comfortable as possible writing for them. And I feel like I got to a good point and it makes me so so so happy when other people feel it too and share it with me!!
It’s been quite a long hiatus, but chapter seven is already in my drafts, and most likely will be posted on Christmas! Hopefully next year I’ll keep a better posting schedule 😩 just wanna say I am not giving up on H.E!!
Thank you again, dear reader ❤️

I particularly like the way you characterize Killer :) a lot of times he can come off as kind of one note in a lot of writing because there’s not a lot to base his personality off of in canon but you manage to keep him very interesting and lovable
Thank you very much, dear anon! 💙 It took me a long time to write for Killer because I wanted it to feel comfortable and natural. Honestly, sometimes I might go on the same chapter hundreds of times because I’m not sure, so it really makes me happy and inspired reading comments like yours! 💙

A Chance Encounter on a Rainy Day
Few people enjoy days like today. The wind is howling and the sky is gray with the promise of rain. These types of days were perfect to stay at home and read or take a nap, it was the perfect weather to drink a hot cup of tea, or coffee and enjoy the calming sound of rain. You however were busy running a few errands for your aunt.
You had moved in with her after your father gambled your house away at the end of your Junior year. She lived in a somewhat small town and owned a ramen shop near the center. Tomorrow was your first day at your new school and your aunt was planning to make a special dinner for good luck.
Starting at a new school in your last year of high-school was kind of nerve wrecking so having her support meant a lot to you, unfortunately she got a bit tangled up at work and was going to arrive later than usual. So she texted you a whole shopping list of ingredients for you to buy so she could get started on dinner as soon as she got home. The convenience store where you typically bought groceries wasn't that far away from your small apartment and you could easily walk there. Plus, there was a drugstore beside it so you could buy some first-aid supplies, you weren't as good as your aunt in the kitchen and some accidents happened in the past so you decided to always have something ready, just in case.
The store wasn't that full, making getting the ingredients and stopping at the drugstore was faster than you expected it would be. However, as you made your way back you noticed how the sky started to darken, you took a small moment to thank yourself for remembering to bring your umbrella and hurriedly opened it before it started to rain.
You were a few minutes away from your apartment complex when you found yourself in a strange situation. Apparently, a fight had broken out near a bus stop close by and someone got hurt. You were now staring at a young man that was sitting on the floor of an alley. An ugly bruise was starting to show under his right eye and he had a few wounds across his nose and cheek. The man was in a rough shape. And against all the odds, you decided to help him.
The young man captivated you. His long blond hair cascaded down his broad shoulders and his eyes were hidden by a messy curtain of bangs, his hairstyle reminded you of a few rock bands from the 70s, it was well kept, that you knew for sure.
You strategically placed the umbrella on your shoulder, freeing both of your hands. With the few supplies you got, you clean his wounds and bandage him up to the best of your abilities, while caring for the man you notice how some of his knuckles are bruised, it seems like he landed a few punches on his opponent. You didn’t really know how to help with those so the best you could do right now is to clean them and awkwardly place some band-aids, it's the intention that counts right?
Satisfied with your work, you stepped back from the stranger, eager to get home, away from the rain. But before you could take your first step and resume your short walk, another series of thoughts entered your mind, this person was injured and it'll probably be a pain in the ass to walk home, he'll be drenched and who knows how far is his house? After that thought, the image of an abandoned puppy popped in your head, and that's when you knew you were doomed. With a tired sigh, you placed your umbrella on top of the injured man and started to hurry back home, trying your best to keep your groceries dry.
"Where were you?! What happened to you?! I thought you brought your umbrella with you!" Your aunt warmly greeted you as soon as you got home. It seems like the trip to the grocery store took longer than expected.
After you explained what happened your aunt said: "Oh dear, please don't be so reckless next time! And go take a shower while I get dinner started. You're gonna get sick!!!" And sent you off.
You left the groceries in the kitchen and hurried to the bathroom to take a comforting warm shower before you happily enjoyed dinner with your aunt and got ready to face the next day.
You woke up early, ate breakfast and got ready for school, your aunt usually woke up later in the morning so you left a note on the fridge door wishing her a good morning and a good day at work. A small habit you two developed after living together for a few weeks.
As you left your apartment complex you looked up at the gray sky and started to walk to school, hurrying to not get caught in the rain.
The school hallways were full, people were talking to their friends and getting ready for class, everyone seemed to know everyone and you felt a bit lonely looking at all the little friend groups talking in the hallway. Reaching your class you made your way to your designated seat, next to the seat beside the window, to be precise, right on the back of the class. As the time passed, the seats in your classroom were occupied, except for the one next to you. The class started soon enough and the teacher awkwardly called you to the front so you could introduce yourself to the class, but before you could do so, the door in the back of the class opened and a tall figure entered the classroom with a few whispered apologies as he rushed to his seat, the one conveniently beside yours.
As strange as it may sound, you swore you recognized him. His uniform was somewhat well kept and his long blond hair was on a low ponytail, his messy bangs and the face mask he was using did a good job hiding his face but you could still see the hint of blue eyes staring back at you.
What were the ods?
"I'm Y/N L/N, it's nice to meet you."
You politely introduce yourself before going back to your seat, feeling the tall student's gaze on you the whole time. You swore you saw him stiffening as you moved to sit next to him.
Lunch break arrived sooner than you expected and a lot of your new classmates came to introduce themselves and talk to you. Everyone was surprisingly kind, making you less nervous to talk and participate in classes, something you weren't used to.
You were chatting with your new classmates when the blonde sitting next to you got up and left, startling a few students and slightly changing the mood around you. The previous happy chatter changed to hushed gossip, and you heard everything.
Killer-kun (is that really his name?) Apparently is part of a young gang of thugs that hangs out behind the school. Their so- called "leader", Eustass Kid ,is a sophomore that will fight anyone who looks at him weird and bla bla bla.
"I'm serious Y/N! They are all bad news. A friend of mine said someone once saw Kid getting into a fight with three other guys and WINNED!" One classmate said, "Is that so?" You answered. Rumors like this are often baseless, but who knows, it's a small town, maybe Kid was a 30 year old yakuza disguised as a 15 year old, god this is getting ridiculous. She kept on with the nonsense until Killer came back and shot her a glare that made her shrink and go back to her seat.
Your relief was, unfortunately, momentary because, for the rest of the day, you could feel the same gaze on you. How fortunate.
As the end of the day approached you started to notice heavy clouds in the sky, and to your dismay, before the class ended, it started to rain.
You were contemplating the weather and weighing your options, waiting for the rain to stop or rushing home regardless. You decided risking slipping in the rain wasn't worth it so you waited near the lockers for the rain to stop. You rested your back against a wall and pulled out your phone to send your aunt a quick message when a huge figure stood in front of you.
Killer's face was unreadable as he stared down at you, you could clearly see now why people portrayed him as the right hand man of the young delinquent  but you weren't scared, because despite his stoic expression, his ears were red. Both of you stood there for a while looking at each other, until Killer broke the silence. "Y/N… right?" His voice was low and you could hear a certain gentleness in it, as if he thought you would run away if he spoke too loud. "Y-Yes." You answered him, curiosity and uncertainty in your voice. You watched as he hesitated a bit before retrieving a small umbrella from his bag.
"Thanks for… lending me this" He carefully handed you your 'borrowed'' umbrella and looked to the side, averting your curious gaze.
"It was no problem." you said with a genuine tone, something that seemed to catch your tall classmate off guard, you could see a surprised look in his eyes for a few seconds before he cleaned his throat and rushed to head out after whispering a shy "See ya".
As you watched him leave you noticed him going through the same options you did earlier, waiting for the rain to stop or… running home.
He raised his backpack above his head and was getting ready for the run, when your sweet voice threw his train of thought off the rails.
"Killer-kun?..." He froze but turned to look at you anyway. "... Is it okay if we walked home together?"
He took a while to answer you, the question was still floating around his head and you started to fear he would reject your offer, but it was exactly in that moment that he answered "Sure."
