Happy birthday to @swiss-army-fangirl ! Now I can finally reveal this piece finished :3 Kiki's delivery service was my favorite movie as a child, something I shared with my younger brother. We'd watch the VHS near daily for years till the tape gave out. A lot of the lessons of that film really shaped me at a young age as a person and a creative. During their thesis crunch I "recommended" [practically demanded lol] Tori watch the film, because I felt like those lessons were ones that could speak to them, and I'm SO happy and glad that they Did. It's been scooped right up as a now Shared comfort film between us Both. Yet another younger sibling I get to hold this movie so tightly and lovingly with. And I love that for BOTH of us ✨️💜💙 for their birthday this year I wanted to commemorate that special bond and growth, so I sat down and charted out my most extensive embroidery project to date! She isn't Perfect, but I'm proud of how she came out. And isn't that what Kiki Teaches us after all? ;]

Happy birthday Lil sis, I cannot WAIT to have you in my home again in a few short weeks! 🌅

Hello! There isn't sadly I'm sorry! My embroidery style is very.... vibes-based because following patterns intimidates me [sounds backwards i know LOL but somehow in my head if a piece never had a set way its "Supposed" to be, then I cant do it "wrong" 😅 it's the same reason I am the kind of chef who pulls away from strict recipes but loves cooking by taste and measuring "with the heart" haha ] I tend to just sketch down a loose outline and then freehand all the details and further choices in the moment etc. that said though! Thank you so much for the compliments! I am so glad you liked my seal and found my post informative ;w; < 3

Special interest infodump time [facilitated by an art challenge I'm taking part in over on my instagram] this episode: The Saimaa Ringed Seal! The Saimaa Ringed seal is a subspecies of ringed seal endemic to Lake Saimaa in Finland. They have evolved separately from other species of glacial ringed seals for nearly 10,000 years after being separated in the forming of Lake Saimaa during post glacial rebound at the end of the last ice age. That prolonged and continued period of isolation has caused them to have broken off into their own, incredibly rare geographically specific and small numbered morphology [other animals to exhibit this include the Devil's Hole Pupfish of death valley]. Due to this nature, while they face endangerment due to the same reasons as many other seals [bycatch mortality, hunting, pollution etc] they also face it purely from a rarity angle, isolated species populations in the sub-1,000s are always going to be incredibly delicate by virture of not having the "padding" of large count numbers on their side.

That said! Conservationists in Finland work closely with the government to do their best to make sure these adorable freshwater seals have the best shot they can at sticking around, and Metsähallitus was very excited to report that this year was a record-high year for Saimaa Ringed Seal pups! Noting that their annual census for 2023 counted 100 pups [the highest count they have ever had! And a HUGE number considering the overall population of the species is estimated around 410 total seals] The organization thinks it's possible the continued increase may be caused by recent net fishing bans in certain parts of the lake allowing more seals to survive to reproductive age, and hope the bans can continue to expand to further parts of the lake as well to increase this encouraging and exciting momentum. Now that this little secret is safely in hands of its new owner [ @swiss-army-fangirl] I can finally post it!!! I am really very happy with how this came together [as my first ever embroidery project to use beads 😅] It's a star map of the sky from the coordinates of Santa Monica Beach the first night the two of us spent together in person. Which is an incredibly special memory for us Both. I think I can speak for us Both when I say that despite being online friends for a good chunk of time [year and half] there were still some nerves and anxieties about how/if our digital synergy and banter would translate to Real Life. Would things be awkward? Would we annoy each other? Would we discover that we weren't that similar after all? But this night was such a showing of how all those worries were so SILLY in hindsight. The day Tori flew in I suggested we go watch sunset on the beach, as any good socal host WOULD. But that was it, that was the Whole Plan, an hour for sunset and then home [she'd had a long day of travel after all]. That is...NOT, however what occurred, with the barrier of having to communicate via typing removed conversation flowed like water in the wake of a broken dam. Sunset turned into stargazing for hours and hours on end and we hardly even noticed. Too lost in our conversation and in laughing with each other and looking for constellations. [We even saw a shooting star!] With the only thing eventually bringing us down to earth being the yawning that started to spread back and forth around midnight. That night marked an evolution in our friendship, locking it in stone, In Person < 3 And beach sunsets and stargazing have become a tradition every time Tori comes to town since The three beaded "shooting stars" hanging off the piece represent the three we have spotted so far in our trips, and I can't wait for all the days in the future where I can eventually say "shoot, now it's out of date, we've seen so many More" Merry Christmas to my little sister and my best friend, You make me a better person for Knowing you, and continue to bring a newfound light to my dingy city, I think of our beach spot Often, and I can't wait to see you in person again in April 🩵💜

Why do you hate FI?

Hello anon! The reason it made my "meet the artist" is more or less just a light hearted jab because I've been so vocal abt it on my main that it's become a "running joke"

But its mainly just the basics, I don't like that it's an environmentally wasteful sport for the ridiculously rich, I don't like that the risk of death and fan reactions to crashes feels heavily gladiatorial and inhumane, I don't like the history of EDs pushed on drivers, I don't like how so many of them are racists or other problematic things etc etc. It's just not the sport for me. I've got lots of friends who watch though so 🤷‍♂️ that's mainly where the "bit" cropped up from, playfully yelling at my friends for talking about it around me or putting it on my dash etc
