How To Write Women
So we've all seen the jokes about male writers writing women, a reputation I personally think is both earned but at the same time massively overblown. That being said, it is a genuine skill to be able to write characters who are not similar or the same as you. Be that in sex, sexuality, religion, culture, etc. We'll focus on the sex thing for right now, but I think the mindset I'm about to lay out can be applied across the board.
So when I do see advice regarding writing female characters, it's often in the form of "just write them like a male character." Or, more accurate, "write them like a person." In essence, the idea is to not make the character's sex a part of their identity. And I don't disagree with this advice for less experienced writers, it's a good starting point, and helps them to understand characters cannot be defined by a collection of traits you give them.
That being said, I think that's an incomplete mindset, because being a man or a woman is a pretty central trait to what kind of person someone is. Now it doesn't define them but men and women think differently, we experience different things and will be affected by the environment around us in different ways. So what I suggest is build the character divorced from these outer traits, and then apply them to that core you've built and ask yourself how that would change things.
Natasha (my character) started out as me considering her being a woman irrelevant to her story and character, but I realized as I developed her and the plot that I couldn't keep that as it was. It's a story that tackles themes of oppression and dystopia, women experience these things differently from men. And I would realize that a dystopia society like the one I was describing would have a vested interest in clamping down on any expressions of self that they could not regulate or control. Femininity projects the power of childbirth, motherhood, and nurturing, these things have power because they can shape entire generations long after the woman who did them has passed. To a totalitarian state like the Commonwealth, this is a threat, they must be allowed to shape the children and futures of the people and not individual mothers. Thusly expressions of feminity are frowned upon, they are made to wear and act in the same roles as men, expectations of labour gives women no time to seek out partners or create families unless specifically allowed by the state.
This is the world Natasha is born into, and she realizes that her opportunities to be anything other than the role she ends up having has been stripped from her. It's not that she inherently desires motherhood because she is a woman, but because she is a woman in the opportunity to choose has been stripped from her. This is one of the many tragedies of her story. And one that is deeply linked to her being a female character.
Another example is Katniss Everdeen from the Hunger Games, a lot of people think of her as the penultimate strong female character. However, they often point out things like the fact that she hunts, kills, fights in a war to be the reason why she's a strong female character. However, these are either not feminine traits or out-and-out male things that Katniss is forced to do to survive. While she certainly gets some enjoyment out of hunting and providing, this is more of an expression of her nurturing motherly instincts. I think what makes her a strong female character is that despite living in a world that insists she become apathetic and accepting of the death of children. That she see them as the Capitol (and District 13) sees them; as expendable commodities, Katniss never stops caring and never stops loving. And as a final statement of her defiance and healing from all that happened to her, she brings new children into the world, despite her own fear. This is her saying that they don't scare her anymore, that she believes the world will be safe for her children, and even though both her and Peeta will never forget all that trauma and pain. Their children will never know it. And that makes Katniss more a victor than any amount of bloody games would.
So with this go forward and think about your female characters, or your religious characters, or a character of a different time, culture, race, ethnicity, nationality from you and ask yourself not how these things would define them but how they would affect and change them.

the funniest thing in the entire pirates of the caribbean series is definitely that one scene in At World’s End where they have parlay but davy jones is part of it, and rather than have him stand in the shallows or something they get a big bucket of water and have in stand on it on shore
who thought of that idea? who thought “put davy jones in a bucket of water” and had the guts to suggest it aloud? and then who went “hey that sounds like a great idea!”
at some point someone told davy jones their idea was for him to stand in a bucket of water and he agreed to it

Happy New Year and Merry Christmas (until the Epiphany at least) everybody! I know I’ve been silent, but that’s because I’ve been busy as heck with my project. I’ve also been fighting myself trying to get to it, so progress is slow. :( Nonetheless, I plan on making more videos and content. So stay tuned! Love you guys, see you next year (which is in a few minutes). 🥳

There's something very poetic about a bunch of greedy, bloodthirsty criminals who still crave the little things like the warmth of sunlight, the sea spray dotting their cheeks, and most tragic to lose, the embrace of a fellow human being. That despite immortality and the chance to plow for riches forever, it's pointless if you can't feel anything.

Gosh I love folktales. They're like the original cartoons.
Lithuanian folktale: i took myself by the hair and threw myself over the mountain but i forgot my horse so i threw myself back over, climbed him, and threw both of us over to save travel time omw to here
Albanian folktale: thats no biggie, I put birds up my sleeves and seeds in my mouth so they would fly me around the earth to sightsee. Though my shirt's buttons ripped open and i fell into a lake :/
Ukrainian folktale: sucks bro. Anyway yesterday i made soup from a head of an axe. I put in a little bit of flour i scraped from the barrel, and a little bit of sausage overleft on the hook, and it was super yummy and i even had the axe head left over. Will make this soup again tomorrow, infinite food glitch
Hungarian folktale: Nice! Ill have to come try some. Now me I was swimming in a pond and wondered how cool itd be to have thisbin my own yard, soni took it by the four corners and put it in my pocket, thrn at home i dug a hole and laid it out, but the hole was too small, so the excess pond turned into blue croque flowers. Cant say I complain.
Georgian folktale: I once grew croque flowers, but they spread over the entire meadow, so the king ordered soldiers to come and reap them down because he didnt like the blue color. I called upon a hundred thousand spiders and they ate the soldiers and the king :)
